Obama To Sharpton: 'My Religious Faith' Makes Me Believe Republicans Will Agree To Raise Taxes

By Mark Finkelstein | November 21, 2011 | 22:18

A  A

On his MSNBC show this evening, Al Sharpton played the audio of his radio-show interview of President Obama in which the president, commenting on the failure of the Super Committee, said "my religious faith" makes him believe at some point Republicans will agree to raise taxes.

Even the Reverend Al couldn't take PBO's reference to his religious faith seriously, as he can be heard chuckling in the background. View the video after the jump.

Listen to President Obama's apparently tongue-in-cheek profession of faith.

AL SHARPTON: I talked with President Obama in an exclusive interview for my syndicated radio show just moments ago.  And I asked him about today's news: "how do you respond to their [the Super Committee] announcing that they can't reach a deal, and where do we go from here?

BARACK OBAMA: Look, there's no doubt that I'm disappointed that not just Congress generally, but the Republicans in particular, are not willing to put serious revenue on the table as part of a balanced plan . . . So the position they're taking is short-sighted.  Uh, but, uh, you know, I, uh, it, it, it must be my, uh, religious faith, reverend, cause, uh, hope springs eternal and I continue to believe that at some point common sense will prevail and we'll be able to work something out.

Submitted by pbthinker on Mon, 11/21/2011 - 11:56pm.

There is no doubt in my mind that Obama's religious belief says Republicans will agree to raise taxes, that's about all Reverend Wright pushed in that church. Of course the LSM would know that if they'd have vetted Obama and asked him some really serious questions about his relationship with the Reverend and Mr and Mrs Ayers.

All you have to do is play the clip, made during the debate on ABC with Hillary, where Gibson asked Obama about raising the Capital Gains tax and stated that when it was lowered, more revenue came in and the Community Organizer said, "It's not about money, it's about what's fair." Well, I'd hate to say it, but taxes should be about money, because that's what these guys are spending.

The Belief In Human Sacrifice Is Not Part Of Any Modern Faith

Submitted by Avitar on Tue, 11/22/2011 - 12:15am.

The operative word is 'modern' Barry Obama must have picked up this faith in Indonesia as a child. It explains why he rejected Capital Gains tax cuts when a Liberal reporter pointed out that cutting capital gains taxes would increase Federal Government revenues. He rejected the Tax cut as unfair?

How do the people of the United States find out in the third year of a President's term that his faith is on the order of a Cargo Cult? Why did we not know this before the election? The press Corps has a lot to answer for. A century ago this would have resulted in reporters hanging from trees. If they do not take responsibility to come up with a way to prevent this kind of primitive from being elected the citizens may have to fall back on the old Democratic methods.

Which 'faith' might that be? His Muslim faith? Oops - he meant to say - his 'Christian' faith? Surely Obama ain't clingin' bitterly to his gunz and his Gawd, is he?

Or maybe it WAS his 'muslim' faith - after all, he did say the most wonderful sound in the world is the sound of his Muslim prayer bell...

The black liberation theology

Submitted by east tennessee john on Tue, 11/22/2011 - 3:03pm.

The black liberation theology he was exposed to for plus years embraces democratic socialism as a major tenet for economic well being, whatever democratic socialism is. Also, it argues for class warfare and collective, not individual salvation so where does BO stand on these pillars of his faith, that he came to accept with the mentoring of Rev. Wright?

Partisanship and a catchy headline are strong motivators...

Submitted by Jer on Tue, 11/22/2011 - 9:08pm.

but, still, the irony is inescapable when it involves a website dedicated to exposing bias in the media.

Clearly, Obama was linking his faith to feelings of hope and optimism regarding a potential compromise. So why not word the headline accordingly, or repeat the comment verb batim--instead of rewording it so as to make the President's remark appear suspect in both a religious and political context.

There is ample opportunity to engage in inferential analysis and criticism of the rhetoric employed by Obama in the body of the blog.

A final note:  Even the most articulate speakers generally will utter a few uhs and ahs or various other minor verbal infractions when speaking off the cuff.  Ordinarily they are redacted when transcribed for publication.  A failure to do so suggests animus.

Jer,

Well, not to push the issue...actually to push the issue. (me being me :-) )

If you are so certain that his religion is Christianity, why would Obama then make the "My Muslim Faith..." comment?

As far as Rev. Wright comments, no way minds are made up. What the media and the Left did is ridicule anyone who dare bring up Rev. Wright and label them as racist which was so Orwellian of the media and the Left.

I think I have told you, I work with countless of Lefties (I work in a university) you would be surprised how many of these hardcore Lefties either never heard of Rev. Wright comments or believed was pure Republican lies. People's minds were made up by the media and the Left wing attack machine.

I have always found his "My Muslim Faith..." very telling and interesting. Imagine if a Republican would have made a similar comment after swearing they weren't Christian. The media would have had a field day with such a freudian slip.

In my opinion, it was just a slip due to the conversation with Stephanopoulos having turned its focus upon the 'Obama: Muslim or Christian' controversy [I believe that was the case--don't hold me to it yet].

Now, I'm sure his detractors would contend it was a Freudian slip and betrayed his authentic inner religious beliefs. [Just now noticed you characterized it as a freudian slip. It's not an unreasonable conclusion. But I still believe it is the wrong conclusion.]

As far as the media and Reverend Wright, I think you overstate the ridicule of the Left and the media regarding the Wright critics. Remember, Obama himself eventually forcefully criticized Wright and essentially dumped him. Again, his detractors will claim it was pure political expediency, and it's an assertion difficult to refute.
