Did The Reverend Al Sharpton Not Realize Bachmann Was Quoting Scripture?

By Mark Finkelstein | November 08, 2011 | 23:30

A  A

It's one thing for your average, secular liberal not to know the New Testament.  But for the Reverend Al Sharpton not to know better?

On his MSNBC show this evening, Sharpton rolled video of Michelle Bachmann, after making the case for self-reliance, saying "if anyone will not work, neither shall they eat." Even this NewsBuster, who is anything but expert in the area, realized that Bachman was quoting Scripture to the effect that people who are unwilling--not unable--to work don't deserve support.  But Sharpton incredibly claimed Bachmann meant that "if you don't have work, you should starve."  Video after the jump.

2011-11-08MSNBCPNSharpton.JPGWhat's worse: that Sharpton intentionally misinterpreted Bachmann's remark, or that he was ignorant of the Biblical verse she was quoting? Watch Sharpton totally misrepresent Scripture and what Bachman was saying.

AL SHARPTON: 76% want to bridge the economic gap. But Michelle Bachmann isn't the answer either.

Cut to video clip.

MICHELLE BACHMANN: Our nation should stop doing for people what they can and should do for themselves. Self-reliance means, if anyone will not work, neither shall they eat.

SHARPTON: If you don't have work, you should starve.  Is that her vision of America?  76% think this country is out of balance.  Republicans aren't the answer.

Ignorant

Submitted by Fredy on Tue, 11/08/2011 - 11:38pm.

Sharpton believes in the 'marxist' re-interpretation of the bible. This is in fact the version that the Pope slammed as an abomination back in the early 1980's. It is also the version pushed by Jim Wallis who is also of the 'marxist' ways.

We should take advice from a network host that speaks in broken english? Was he drinking ?

I realize that it sounds mean to make fun of him like this but he is in a position of prominence and influence and he can barely form a sentence. Why must lefties be so reliably inadequate....?

I know Rev Al doesn't speak English, so I doubt that he understands it very well either.

President Obama is a Muslim (from his own lips), Kenyan (read it from his publicist) a homosexual (read it on a news magazine cover) and a Socialist (I'm alive and can see it for myself)

The ONLY Bible

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 11/09/2011 - 12:12am.

I'll bet you dollars to sharpton's doughnuts that the only Bible he might know of (emphasis on might) would be the Gideon Bibles in the hotels.

That's it.

Why would anyone expect a self-appointed Reverend . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 11/09/2011 - 12:16am.

. . . to recognize scripture?

Here are other Sharpton misinterpretations:

1. Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. TEACH a man to fish, and you have to join the NEA.

2. Father, forgive their student loans, for they know not what they owe.

Whether he was ignorant of

Submitted by ant on Wed, 11/09/2011 - 12:19am.

Whether he was ignorant of that part of Scripture or chose to lie about it in order to smear Bachmann still brings you to the same conclusion; Reverend indeed! Ha! It is to laugh.
Perhaps Bashir should go on air questioning Al's motivations, like he did with Mr. Claver from Cain's camp.

'Daaaah, me am Sharpton - me am preacher!'

Submitted by Slyrr on Wed, 11/09/2011 - 12:39am.

Al Sharpton is not, never was, and never will be, a man of God. This clueless hack wouldn't know a scripture if Moses himself clouted him over the head with the 10 commandments.

I don't think any further explanation is necessary.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

In order to...

Submitted by GeneralAl on Wed, 11/09/2011 - 8:44am.

In order to understand the Bible, you have to READ the Bible. If you understand the Bible, you either chose to believe it [All of it!] or reject it [It either is taken as a whole or it all falls apart!]. Dull Sharpton doesn't have the mental capacity to undersatnd plain English, let alone the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to discern Scriptures!

Submitted by Keef Olbermann on Wed, 11/09/2011 - 9:41am.

Sharpton is a bright guy and a very talented speaker, but he thinks he knows it all. He has gifts to heal the world but uses them to poison people's hearts and set them against one another.

Christian? Not really. He's the quintessential false prophet.

LOL...

Submitted by c5then on Wed, 11/09/2011 - 10:08am.

Sharpton is as much a Reverened as Al Gore is a Climatologist. Neither one understand the over-all picture and simply pick and choose certain info to fit their ideology.

Even back in the 1930's they didn't expect people to simply get money from the government and do nothing for it. There were all kinds of work programs instituted where the out of work were put to work doing what the government concidered productive tasks and they got paid for that.

The Reverend Al Sharpton

Submitted by telecaster on Wed, 11/09/2011 - 7:48pm.

is a stage name and in no way should imply that he knows anything about scripture in general or the teachings of Jesus Christ specifically. One day Al will have to answer for his fraud and his lies. He'll then realize what little weight the title of Reverend carries with the one who stands in judgement.

Big Al the Schmuck

Submitted by sfcpete on Wed, 11/09/2011 - 11:30pm.

Why would Sharpton who knows nothing of morality know anything of any religion? He like so many other "community organizers" may have a piece of paper entitling them to the salutation reverend but than again if you have a couple of bucks someone will "ordain" you. And it helps ward off attacks by the civil and the sane.
