Matthews: Obama Needs To Offer Alternative To Capitalism

By Mark Finkelstein | August 16, 2011 | 21:18

A  A

He has, Chris; he has . . .

Chris Matthews claims that for purposes of the 2012 campaign, Barack Obama needs to offer an alternative to capitalism. Along the way, Matthews, on his MSNBC show this evening, offered a completely crazed notion of what capitalism is about.   Chris clearly never cracked 'The Wealth of Nations' back at Holy Cross. Does the Invisible Hand ring a bell, Chris? View video after the jump.

Marvel at Matthews entirely misconstruing what capitalism is about--while calling on PBO to come up with an alternative.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: CHRIS MATTHEWS: The Republican candidate will promise that less government is better.  Less taxes, less spending, less regulation, less involvement.  He or she will say that the smart move is to have Washington pull back into a cocoon of small activity and leave the mighty corporate world, which we've been recently assured is just people like us with all the good intentions of mankind, all the compassion and human concern and of course looking out for one's fellow man, alive and thriving in the executive board room.  The live, pending, intriguing unknown is what President Obama will offer.  What Obama program? What Obama push?  What Obama sweep of action will be showcased for our consideration as we enter the polling booth? What alternative to the compelling argument that government should simply get the heck out of the way so that the lion of capitalism can let loose its mighty roar?  What will be the other roar, is my question?

Matthews was presumably riffing off Romney's recent statement that "corporations are people. ... Everything that corporations earn also goes to people."  That is an undeniable fact.  Chris, even in the law, corporations are known as a fiction. Really, they don't belong to country clubs or smoke cigars.  Ultimately, people do.

But where did Matthews get the crazy concept that capitalism is all about compassion and looking out for human concern?  Seriously, has he never heard of enlightened self-interest?  Capitalism drives people to offer better goods and services at lower prices not out of the goodness of their heart but because that's how you get customers and make money.   It's socialism, Chris, that fails because it assumes most people will emulate Mother Teresa.

He already has offered an alternative. Many of us do not like it. It's not working out great even for some of those who were 'hopeful'. I blame them for being lazy, ignorant voters when it was not difficult to discern Obama's agenda prior to 2008. Of course, we are all paying for their naivete.

Matthews Mania

Submitted by stratman on Tue, 08/16/2011 - 9:45pm.

It's hard to believe someone could out dipshit an alien-attacking hopeful like Krugman, and do it in record time, but Matthews has succeeded.

What does Tingles suggest we do?

  • Go deeper into the abyss of Marxism his paramour Ofumbler longs for?
  • Just give in already and whimper at the feet of Islam's all encompassing societal demands?
  • Go the way of Socialist Democrats of the Eropean Union?

On second thought, Tingles probably has scratched the Socialists-Lite option from his wishlist - Merkel and Sarkozy announced the desire to make all EU members have a balanced budget, which is anathema to fellow travelers like Matthews as we have witnessed recently.

At least the delusional Krugman wanted America to succeed with capitalism somewhat intact.  Matthews... who knows what his spittle drenched noggin really wants.

I believe Matthews has realized he jumped the shark a long time ago and is pulling any shenanigan he can think of to stay relevant and noticed.  Then again, maybe he just needs a lithium level and an adjustment in meds.

Not my finest moment on NB.

Submitted by stratman on Tue, 08/16/2011 - 11:18pm.

Not my finest moment on NB. Should have used dipstick, but you got the gist of what I meant.

Speaking of language, and I see from your bio you are a veteran, my 10th grade English teacher recalled a grammatical tour de force his drill instructor gave one day on the firing range in boot camp during the early 1960's. My teacher's rifle jammed and the DI came over to inspect it. No matter what he did, the DI could not get the rifle operational. Finally, in disgust, the DI exclaimed, minus the contractions, "This f'ing f'er is f'ed". Everyone understood clearly what the DI meant. Talk about a versatile word. May even be partially why my teacher became an English teacher.

Thank you for your service, ex buff e-dub.

Matthews and MessNBC are Products of Capitalism!

Submitted by gruyere cheese on Tue, 08/16/2011 - 9:57pm.

I doubt that Matthews lives in a shack, rides a bike to work and redistributes the wealth to his fellow citizens. What part of small government vs. big spending government does he not understand? The government runs on our money, us the taxpayer -- the government is not a private entity or corporation. Heck, look at Obama riding in his private mega bus while campaigning at the taxpayers expense. Now that is a waste of our money while some of us are riding this dreadful economic wave.

I think not. They're more like the refuse of capitalism:
The soot that comes from the engine of capitalism.
The hiss from a tape recording...
The gas from a serving of baked beans...
The belch from a long drink of cold brew...

I wouldn't enjoy spending an evening in their coach of socialism.

Yes Chrissy, the corporate world is peopled with people who are exactly the same morally as government. That is the argument you are trying to make; that people in government are somehow morally superior. The difference is that in a free economy, when people follow their own selfish motives to get ahead, they are generally disposed to produce the best goods and services they can at the lowest cost. Now, when people in government follow their own selfish motives, what exactly do they do?

Submitted by okie-pastor on Tue, 08/16/2011 - 10:15pm.

Liberals believe that rich people should be punished for their success. And send the message that all success should be punished. How? By raising their taxes. And that the unproductive should be rewarded because they are not as fortunate as the successful. Easy solution: just take the rich peoples $ and give it to the poor.

They just keep missing one thing: ITS NOT THEIR MONEY!!
And they despise the fact they haven't the power to get that money. Ironic that they call others "greedy"

Taxing your GPA

Submitted by ThisnThat on Wed, 08/17/2011 - 6:55am.

I like the action by the recent college graduate who interviewed students on a college campus asking if they would give some of their high GPAs to students with lower GPAs. None of the high-GPA students agreed to do that. Their excuses? "It's not fair", and "I earned this". They were offended when asked "Why do you need a 4.0 GPA?". And yet -- many of these same liberals still wanted the rich to give up their money to people who didn't earn as much, because it seemed "fair".

Just who is "us," Chrissy?

"which we've been recently assured is just people like us with all the good intentions of mankind..."

Just who do you include in "us," Chrissy? It sure couldn't be those raciest, homophobic, gun-toting, bible thumping, America hating Tea Party members, could it? It also can't be those rich, manipulative, money-grubbing, politician owning, corporate big wigs (like the one you work for), could it? Nor could it be the great, unwashed, ignorant Middle Class who doesn't even know what is good for them and needs Big Government to tell them just what to eat, what to drive, were to live, and what to live in, as well as how to wash their cloths, power their cars, and light their dark, dismal over-expensive homes, which they own because Bog Government allows them to mortgage, could it?

I guess that "us" only includes people much like yourself who, despite being a member of the rich, money-grubbing class who hangs with those corporate big wigs and their bought politicians and, after informing us all just how smart you really are, lounges around in your large, expensive house, with your multimillion dollar mortgage, while bemoaning the ignorant middle class for being such racists that they only hate Obama because he's black. Matthews and his wife..........

Submitted by Herbster on Tue, 08/16/2011 - 10:57pm.

Between the two of them, they make around a million per year. I guess his understanding of his obvious favorite political system - Communism - comes from "Animal Farm," where all the animals are equal - except some are more equal than others. This man is clearly certifiable. Hasn't the present occupant of the White House and his minions - in and out of the media - done enough damage? Remember obama stating that we need a civilian security force equal to the armed forces, etc? Mr. Matthews clearly considers himself one of the "More equals." He should go back and read what happened to the "More equals" in Hitler's Brown Shirts.

We live in VERY dangerous times. I am tired of hearing people state that, "It can't happen here>" Sorry. It already has.

A five year plan society?

Submitted by stunned on Wed, 08/17/2011 - 12:20am.

I am old enough to remember the old Soviet Union's five year plan for economic stimulus they trotted out every few years. The plans always failed in a totalitarian society yet Obama and yet the left keeps howling for a new plan from DC to solve all our problems. What are these idiots thinking, government can't create jobs or stimulate the economy except by creating a business friendly culture: easing regulations, cutting the corporate tax rate, stop demonizing compainies and entering into trade agreements in order to encourage economic growth. Why these idiots don't get it is wierd?

I'm not sure that even his mentors Fidel Castro or Hugo Chavez could offer him the life that he has made for himself here in the evil, mean USA. The ironic thing about Obama's vision of a socialist/communist/'equally fair' country is that the elites and the ruling class will have all of the wealth, power, and perks that those evil capitalists - who they despise - had!!!

As for the Leghumper..........this useless clown should be ecstatic that he's making the kind of living that he is here in this country........I doubt if he could even find a job somewhere else!!!

Submitted by ironhead4099 on Wed, 08/17/2011 - 1:18am.

Well remember he studied Economics, that's why he's such a believer in the Keynesian Theory, even though it doesn't work. If Obiwan does come up with a plan, (will we ever see it, like the mysterious budget plan a few weeks ago) it will be just another Keynesian give away. That will do several things, first Chris Tingle won't just have a tingle, he'll have an orgasm, and only deepen his mancrush on Obiwan. Secondly everybody else will have to bend over, pull down their pants, look over their shoulder and say thank you, as we take it up the ASS. Hasn't everybody figured out by now that the great and powerfull Obiwan, is all knowing, all seeing, and is the only hope left for this country. WHAT A JOKE FOR A JOURNALIST AND A BIGGER JOKE FOR A PRESIDENT!

Obama doesn't know anything

Submitted by rbosque on Wed, 08/17/2011 - 3:30am.

Obama doesn't know anything about Keynes since I'm quite sure he's never read his general theory of macroeconomics. Matthews has no clue either because he's a slobbering idiot. If Obama ordered Matthews to bark like a dog dressed in a chicken suit he'd do it. Matthews is Obama's sock puppet and Matthews likes where Obama's hand is.

Keynes has nothing to do with his economic philosophy, Marx is his idol because Obama is just a third-rate wanna-be Communist dictator.

Not sure who's advising Obama but this economist would look at GDI and look to see how that can be increased and not focus on spending entirely, especially on borrowed money. Nothing is more destructive and the opposite will happen. Not only will revenues decrease, employment and overall GDP will as well. The focus should be on increaing the tax base and have everyone pay taxes, not just 51%. A flat tax of 19% to 22% will increase revenues and help stop people from using tax loopholes. Obama's destructive regulations and tax burden on producers are a major factor in Obamanomics and why the economic numbers have tanked. Obama is his own worst enemy. But it's almost as if he WANTS to destroy our economy.

Matthews wants to substitute capitalism? Obama is already doing it, and what is the alternative? There is nothing better than a Calitalist free-market, free-trade system.
