Kristof: Republicans 'Biggest Threat To America's National Security'

By Mark Finkelstein | July 24, 2011 | 07:02

A  A

Latest dispatch from the Department of Dissent Is No Longer Patriotic: because they won't raise taxes, Republican "maniacs" are more dangerous to US national security than al Qaeda.

That is the view of Nicholas Kristof, as expressed in his New York Times column of today, "Republicans, Zealots and Our Security."

View excerpts after the jump.

From the Kristof column [emphasis added]:

If China or Iran threatened our national credit rating and tried to drive up our interest rates, or if they sought to damage our education system, we would erupt in outrage.

Well, wake up to the national security threat. Only it’s not coming from abroad, but from our own domestic extremists . . . the blunt truth is that the biggest threat to America’s national security this summer doesn’t come from China, Iran or any other foreign power. It comes from budget machinations, and budget maniacs, at home.

So let’s remember not only the national security risks posed by Iran and Al Qaeda. Let’s also focus on the risks, however unintentional, from domestic zealots.

Kristof has obviously opted not to heed President Obama's pious prayers for "civil debate."

Really Kristoff?

Submitted by Bourbeau on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 7:25am.

Perhaps you should take a few minutes and interview Mr. Trumpka, or one of his union zealots hell bent on ripping this country off of their financial resources for their own selfish preservation; or one of Mr. Obama's unconfirmed Czars hell bent on strangling our productive industries; or maybe some of the Democrat zealots that occupy the House and the Senate - Maxine Waters, Representative Clyburn, Senator Boxer - there's more then a few to occupy your mind of calculating dissent. And that's just on the Democrat side.

Liberals don't make coherent arguments anymore. They just run around screaming, with their skirts up over their heads.

Reducing funding for "Reading is Fundamental" is a threat to our national security?

Liberals are cute when they try to act concerned about our national security: they do it by focusing on reading programs and food.

The Politics of Fear

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 11:23am.

I seem to recall Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi accusing the Republicans of practicing the "Politics of Fear," and she promised that Democrats wouldn't play the game. That was back in 2006, and the Democrats captured both houses of Congress that November.

And ever since then, the Democrats and their MSM echos having been scaring the voters.

- Republicans have been labeled as racists, misogynists, and even terrorists. It's even been stated by an opemly gay MSNBC host  that a Republican President will exterminate homosexuals.  Rep. Jackson Lee last week stated that the only rational reason for the GOP bucking Obama on the debt ceiling talks is racism.  Tea Partiers have been labeled terrorists.

- The stimulus and Obamacare were promoted as necessary to avert a second Great Depression and sabve health care.  When the stimulus failed to hold unemployment below 8%, we were told that the economy would've been worse had we not borrowed and spent that money.  Those who want to repeal Obamacare are accused of wanting to kill the elderly and children.

-  Talk radio has been accused of fueling hate against women and minorities.

-  Muslim Americans are regularly reminded that Islamophobia is on the rise in this country, though there don't appear to be any facts to substantiate it.  Not only did Obama's DHS publish an assessment in 2009 warning that right wing white supremecist groups were the primary domestic terrorist threat to the nation, but this month it posted a "See Something. Say Something"  promotional video on its website  in which all the suspicious characters are white and the citizens reporting their behavior are minorities  -- DHS denies any bias in the selection of the actors.

And you know it will only get worse here on out because the Democrats can't run on their pathetic record.

The good thing about a New York-based Lib Media...

Submitted by ChrisNH on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 7:59am.

...is that there are plenty of tall buildings for them to jump from. I keep hoping and waiting for the sanctimonious Paul Krugman to do it, but he's a Limp-wrist.

Lib media hacks are in a state of near self-immolation now, and I love it. Wasn't this supposed to be a period of 'perpetual Democratic majorities?' Some tweed-jacketed Lib elite said that, but whoever it was must also be scoping out tall buildings himself. Maybe it was cueball James Carville.

I love the rage they are in!

So let us see how this works

Submitted by richb313 on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 8:58am.

So let us see how this works Mr. Kristoff. If we were to go along with any of the schemes the Democrats supposedly support the country would borrow more money now with a promise to cut in the future and rasie taxes now. All this move would do is put the country deeper in debt and spiralling ever faster to total insolvency

Now if we were to adopt the plan passed by the house any new borrowing would be offset by cuts of an equal amount, the amount of money that the feds could spend would be capped at a percentage of GDP and we would at least have a Balanced Budjet Amendment on the Table which could either be rejected or approved by 2/3rds of the States.

Some how we are led to belive a scheme which would give political cover to democrats, push our country deeper in debt with no structure to end the cycle and therefore would actually signal to world markets to speed up thier plans to abandon the dollar is not a danger to Natioal Security?

We are definitly through the looking glass folks.

We're spending at almost 100%

Submitted by rbosque on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 9:50am.

We're spending at almost 100% of our GDP and countries like China who are one of our antagonists own a lot of our debt...THAT'S not a threat to national security? The Dems are pushing for wealth confiscation and they expect tax receipts to climb? For how long? By shutting down our economy?

And these people are in charge?

But Who are the Budget Maniacs Mr Kristof?

Submitted by Comrade Jim on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 10:25am.

Who passed and signed the massive stimulus bill that busted the budget?

Who passed and signed the massive entitlement health care bill that busted the budget?

Who busted the budget by hiring all the new czars who in turn hired new government busy bodies to harass citizens and businesses?

Who is driving down business activities and driving down employment (reducing the tax base) with new regulations and threats to "tax the rich"?

Is this too hard for Kristof to figure out? Of course not? Figuring it out is not the point with the left wing. The point is to destroy any small-government movement and grow government into a one-party state that runs the economy and runs peoples lives.

Wow shocker!!!

Submitted by gmaniac1 on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 11:06am.

A left wing politburo NY Times activist is calling a political rival a national security threat!

Hmm so I guess constantly pursuing and giving up government secrets to discredit a president you disagree with is not a national security threat? Also, I guess putting troops and government agents in danger because of said secrets being revealed is not a national security threat? Or even constantly berating and vilifying anyone trying to protect our borders all the while American citizens are being kidnapped, raped, and murdered is not a national security threat? Need I go on? And let's not get into willfully giving a pass to the most reckless president in terms of spending in history, that's not a national security threat?!

This mind numbed zombie may want to smell what crap he's shoveling.

"No-credibility Nick"

Submitted by drsamherman on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 11:30am.

Your own newspaper continually publishes pieces listing names, dates, places and situations where real people are put at risk. Your own newspaper drooled over the Wikileaks incident and Julian Assange. Your own newspaper published the names of CIA operatives in many, many cases. Your own newspaper has threatened national security more times than could be counted by a supercomputer programmed to do nothing but tally the incidents.

I can recommend a good colorectal surgeon to help you put your accusations where they belong in your body.

They get to keep my 57 years of social security taxes and want us to commit involuntary suicide after Obamacare kicks in.

When they attack ordinary patriotic wage earning taxpaying Americans, then you must clearly be able to see the real treacherous enemy.  And they are now getting very bold with their anti American rhetoric. The libs are very scared

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 1:52pm.

Kristof's hyperbole is symptomatic of the mounting anxiety the Left has over this President's poor track record. The community activist has proven to be a weak executive, and his 2008 charm has soured into 2011 obtuseness.

So, Kristof and others write opinions that look like they crawled out of a poorly edited Ivy League campus newspaper, and hope it scares average Americans into ignoring the facts and visiting the well of empty promises and dreams for one more drink of Kool-Aid.

Step (1)

"Blame the last Republican President who never killed anybody. Grant and some of the others were willing to shoot back."
Step (3)
"Organize a great choris of paid pundits to sing the praises of Unions, the Democratic Party, Failed Democratic Presidents and claim all that all popular defensless deceased Republican Presidents were actually practising Progressive policies. "
