NBC Apologizes For Editing Out 'Portion' Of Pledge--But Doesn't Mention Omitted Words Were 'Under God'

By Mark Finkelstein | June 19, 2011 | 17:55

A  A

As Noel Sheppard reported earlier, in the show-opening feature of its coverage of the final round of the US Open golf championship today, NBC--twice--edited out the words "under God" from its clip of school children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Clearly many Americans were offended and let NBC know about it.  Because later in the broadcast, host Dan Hicks issued an apology on behalf of the network. But NBC simply compounded one omission with another.  The apology spoke of "a portion of the Pledge" being edited out--but never mentioned that the omitted words were "under God."

View video after the jump.

DAN HICKS: We began our coverage of this final round just about three hours ago. When we did, it was our intent to begin our coverage of this US Open championship wiht a feature that captured the patriotism of our national championship, held in our nation's capital for the third time.  Regrettably, a portion of the Pledge of Allegiance that was in that feature was edited out.  It was not done to upset anyone, and we'd like to apologize to those of you who were offended by it.

if you have the internet, you don't really need the local yokels to regurgitate the radar/weather service information.

The Dallas/Ft Worth NBC affiliate hasn't been the best for weather info since Harold Taft retired. Rebecca Miller was 2nd only to Harold, and the NBC affiliate chose NOT to renew her contract. I haven't watched them since.

I'm reminded of a conversation with my daughter about 'Gay' marriage. I shattered her 'reasoning' by asking if it was cool with her if I 'married' our dog...because we 'love' each other so much. Her reply that is was not 'the same thing' precisely made my point. She still doesn't get it. Much to my chagrin!

"It was not done to upset anyone"

Submitted by ThisnThat on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 6:58pm.

NBC follow-up explanation: Instead, it was done precisely so that the airing of the pledge wouldn't upset our base of progressive bastards, perverted queers, Godless atheists, or assorted leftist pressure groups that we have promised to never, every offend by airing anything that smacks of patriotism, honest reporting, or family values at any time. To these groups, NBC wants to make one thing perfectly clear -- our so-called apology is not -- repeat NOT -- sincere! It is only being done to temporarily mollify a small but vocal group of right-wing extremists that constantly try to harass us every time we try to change America, her values, and historical record for the betterment of our progressive principles. We ask our followers to please ignore this "apology". You must know by now we would never, ever sacrifice our true principles or abandon you -- our true believers -- ever. Please tune into our sister network -- MSNBC -- nightly if you doubt us.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP.......

Submitted by Herbster on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 7:14pm.

Hard to believe that these actions took place today......but, BELIEVE IT! Two goals were achieved by the state run media today. First, God was edited out of the Pledge and second, "Fatherhood" was denigrated by highlighting two homosexuals showing off their newest accessory, a little black girl. Whether we disagree with these actions or not is not the point here. The point is that these acts are now "Out there," part of the agenda of the left and it's enablers in the media. Two of the goals of Communism are the destruction of the Church (Religion) and the destruction of the family. Both are in process now with the blessing of the present occupant of the White House, his minions within his administration, the state run propaganda arm known as the "Media," and the myriad of pressure groups such as GLADD, the ACLU, etc. The goal is to "Mainstream" these practices so as to marginalize believers in God, family and the greatness of this Country. Anyone who disagrees with these actions will be painted with the brush of racism, bigotry and hatred of those who are "Different."

Pray for our Nation.

We're constantly told that Christians, conservatives, white people, and men are intolerant and since the start of the Tea Party movement those groups have routinely been labeled violent as well. Isn't it funny that Hollywood and the media seem to have no fear whatsoever in offending these intolerant and violent people but they wouldn't dare insult a group they labeled tolerant and nonviolent.

Why are you focused on the external things?

Submitted by twiggygirl71 on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 10:41pm.

What many commenters here are focused on are the external things -- those things that are a reflection of the internal condition of a person. Now, instead of being so self-righteously offended by others' sin, why don't you spend time offering positive change? Since only God can bring true goodness and holiness, you should be sharing God's love with these people instead of putting walls up because you're too clean to touch them.

Then again, the Bible says that it's God's kindness that brings people to repentance, and here's where we may have found the problem. If people's sinful deeds are your focus instead of the people themselves, may I suggest that it is because you do not show God's love and kindness to people with whom you disagree that this country seems headed away from God? Or do you think calling people bastards, queers, and more is showing God's love? Is it the drowning man's fault the water is roiling, or is it the fault of the people in the boat who are too holy to reach down and help?

God's kindness does not bring

Submitted by Dan The Man 2 on Mon, 06/20/2011 - 12:14am.

God's kindness does not bring them to repentance ... if that were true all would be repentant. It is the Holy Spirit and their realization that they are sinners in the eyes of God and only one way of salvation is open to them.

We must remember God also called people names such as Brood of Vipers, adulterers and fornicators. He did not shy away from the truth and the sin in man. He destroyed the world once and at least two cities because of sin. So God loves us all but only the willing will be saved.

So all the drowning man has to do is reach out for help ... which most will not do.

Did you respond too quickly?

Submitted by twiggygirl71 on Sun, 06/19/2011 - 11:12pm.

Did I say that you are not showing God's love? Rather, I asked, "Do you think calling people bastards, queers, and more is showing God's love?" That is a yes or no question, not a statement -- and one which you did not answer. And when people are so derisive and derogatory toward others in their speech, it is an easy assumption to make that their actions follow suit.

And I completely agree that this website is here to expose media bias; that's why I enjoy it so much. That's also why when commenters here get off-topic in order to demean others, I speak out. Good day!

As one who has put together many videos that aired on local television I can say without hesitation and with complete confidence that editing out "under God" could not have been done accidentally but was done intentionally. I do not accept the reason of "time constraints" as some initially tried to use and the apologies (and I use that term quite loosely) issued by NBC have been weak, insincere and ineffectual. I hope the overwhelming public outcry might actually break through the thick skulls of those in charge at NBC and their parent company, Comcast.

Submitted by Hoosier Conservative on Mon, 06/20/2011 - 4:53pm.

First of all, Christians are not the only people who believe in one nation under God. Jews, deists, Muslims, and a host of other ideologies embrace it.

Second, if you really think that "unalienable rights endowed by your creator" can be dismissed from our government with no consequence, you haven't a clue about our government. To paraphrase the great Ezra Benson, if there is no higher power to appeal to above the state, then the state can do no wrong. Call it God, call it the law of the universe, call it whatever you like, but belief in God-given rights is the only thing that stands between you and communism.

Third, I'm waiting for evidence of an American Christian cutting out an unbeliever's tongue. Go ahead and look. We'll be here all day.

Fourth, considering how the moonbats who've taken over the DNC are really so delusional to think Christians want to terrorize them, then we are two very different nations stuck in the same space.

Submitted by Agnostic on Mon, 06/20/2011 - 5:02pm.

the word indivisible being left out did bother me but oddly enough I assumed it was because the person who edited the words didn't pull his finger (or whatever) off the button soon enough (time lag or whatever is entailed).  By your wording you seem a little over the top on this issue and seem to lay a lot of anger at the feet of religion.

While the belief in God or gods holds no personal sway to me I believe to truly understanding the foundation of this country it is imperative to at least be empathetic to Christian belief system.  Otherwise the motivations of men like Adams and many others are skewed and become tools to pull apart the nation instead of unite us.
