MSNBC Union Guest: Republicans 'Literally Deny Clothing To Foster Kids To Give Rich People Tax Cuts'

By Mark Finkelstein | May 21, 2011 | 07:21

A  A

Kind of disappointing--nothing about Republicans head-butting widows or knocking the crutches from the arms of the disabled.  Even so, let's give Damon Silvers credit: the union boss did claim that Republicans "literally deny clothing to foster kids to give rich people tax cuts."

AFL-CIO honcho Damon Silvers made the hysterically hyperbolic claim on Cenk Uygur's MSNBC show this evening.

View video after the jump.

Silvers was describing Big Labor's strategy in funding upcoming campaigns.

DAMON SILVERS: If all the politicians of one party stand up for the American dream and fight for working people, then we'll be with them.  If only some politicians in one party do that, we'll be with those politicians that do that.  And, as it sometimes seems to be the case with Republicans, if none of the politicians in the party are prepared to stand up for the American dream, then we're not going to be with any of them . . . We continue to look for the scale of vision and moral courage that's necessary to fight the truly destructive forces that are work in our country.  Forces that really essentially close schools, and close universities, and deny, deny literally deny clothing to foster kids in order to give rich people tax cuts.

The fact that the unions

Submitted by LAM SON 719 on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 1:08am.

The fact that the unions destroyed the US textile industry escapes buffoon. As an evil republican I would never single foster kids, it would be racist all children should go naked to support a green environment.

Non, je ne regrette rien. "You aren't angry because I might be a racist, you're angry because you know I'm right".

Umm...what?

Submitted by Phryj1 on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 1:40am.

Aside from the fact that tax cuts can stimulate the economy and bring in more revenue, how does this guy make the jump from tax cuts to foster kids? And does he not know how broken and corrupt many foster care/CPS systems are? You have CPS unjustly removing kids from their families just to get funding bonuses, foster parents who take in kids just for the money, nightmare scenarios where children are put in horrible and abusive situations so the agency and the foster parents can get money. It's awful, and it would be the main reason for any foster care funding shortfalls, as well as contributing to budget problems overall.

And the American Dream? Seems to me the Dems are the ones actively trying to destroy the middle class and small business owners, as well as using a fatally flawed poverty fighting strategy, Cloward-Piven, that has only condemned more people to poverty over the years. The Dems are also extraordinarily lax about illegal immigration, further undermining American workers. Then you have onerous EPA regulations, a job killing healthcare law, and union cronyism scaring businesses away. On top of all that, they also have climate legislation in the works that will completely destroy not just the American Dream, but our entire way of life. The Democrat Party has been waging a relentless all-out assault on the American Dream.

But we all know who the unions are really looking out for: themselves and their pals in the Democrat Party.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

I am familiar with this and yes the GOP was going to specify where the foster kids get to spend their 75 bucks a year instead of not tracking the money. It is a paltry sum. But the union thug is lying about the particulars /// surprise!

Sink Yogurt is a Leftist idiot

Submitted by ChrisNH on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 7:02am.

We all know that Sink Yogurt is a Leftist puppet. I enjoy seeing him ridiculed & mocked. I also love seeing Leftist media hacks in a never-ending state of rage; it proves that things aren't going their way. The angrier people like Sink Yogurt, Christine Matthews, Edward Schultz, and Leary O'Donel get...the more pleased I am. I also like the rage coming from NYT's Paul Krugmen.

A Union Thug Is Lying?

Submitted by Bourbeau on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 7:12am.

What a shock; and we wonder why this country has lost it's way. We're all guilty. They're guilty - Republicans, Democrats, and Union thugs. Guilty for taking advantage of the generosity of union members, taxpayers and the average working American. And we're guilty for supporting them with our campaign contributions and union dues. They're all vermine; they all live off the sweat of others, and they take care of themselves first. Has anyone seen a underpaid union boss lately; or an underpaid polititician; or an underpaid politico/lobbyist. I didn't think so.

his homeland of Turkey. Seems they don't like crossdressers over there. When he got on the plane people were literally puking. He was wearing a neon green miniskirt, a black tank top(because black is so slimming) and thigh high pleather boots with six inch heels. The Turkish Authorities were completely fooled by his lipstick, they actually believed they were deporting the ugliest woman alive. It helped that he knows loads of Broadway Show Tunes and has a hell of a falsetto....

I suppose this segment was about the union thug Trumka (who has his own bedroom at the Obama White House) trying to make people believe they were going to switch from the (D) to the (R). Yeah, right. The public sees through these thieves and their numbers are going down. Don't tie your anchor to our boat.

Two questions

Submitted by Dave. on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 8:10am.

  1. Why is government placing children in foster homes where the 'parents' cannot afford to clothe them?
  2. Since when did government have the constitutional authority to point a gun to my head and force me to pay for other people's clothing?

Submitted by motherbelt on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 8:51am.

Doesn't the government give people an allowance to care for the kids they foster?

Is Silvers saying they are going to stop that allowance? Or cut it?

It's outrageous that he is allowed to engage in hypebole like this and not be challenged to provide some specifics.

If one says they are "literally" (actually) denying clothing, shouldn't one have to prove it?

What is the American Dream, Cenk?

Submitted by Blonde on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 8:28am.

Please articulate. Because it seems to me, Cenk's idea of the American Dream is to collect your entire income and means of well being from the federal government.

NOT MY AMERICAN DREAM.

Notice he didn't challenge any of the union goon's nonsense. It's the commies preaching to the choir over at that network.

all unions are corrupt

Submitted by ohio granny on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 9:36am.

I would like to ask that union person exactly why are union members required to "donate" their money to the union to support politicians that most of them do not support. And exactly why is it some people are obligated to work and others are entitled to NOT work, even though many are capable of working.

Some years ago, I worked part-time for a chain similar to Wal-Mart and we had a vote for the union. The union was voted in and the raise we received was just enough to cover our union dues. We, the workers, did not gain any more money, but the union received money from every employee. Now who was benefiting from that, certainly not the employees. Oh, and as for working conditions, nothing changed for the better there either.

Let's see her how many

Submitted by dscott on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 7:32pm.

Let's see her how many billions did GE get in tax credits for feeding at the government trough? You think several million children could be fed and clothed modestly just from cancelling the tax breaks Dem campaign contributors get from the government?

How many billions a year do we give away on Ethanol subsidies? Billions a year of waste fraud and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid as admitted by Barack Obama. How many billions do Dem campaign contributors get for NOT PLANTING CROPS deliberately idling farm land in a market where planting corn for ethanol production crowds out food production for people and by how many billions does this drive up food prices on the poor here and around the world? How many billions do the big agri-corporations get in crop subsidies? How many billions did the no drill ban cost the US consumer by doubling the price of gas over the two years?

Seems to me we are awash in money ripe for the picking that could easily be repurposed to more useful efforts but for those greedy Democrat cronies who insist on getting fat off the taxpayer. But hey, Republicans want little kids to go naked. Yeah, Mr. Silvers you're really credible there. In fact, you're just as credible as that teacher in NJ who whined to Governor Christie claiming her $100,000+ salary was for the kids. Yeah right, it's all about you living large and the public knows it.
