Buchanan: Newt Is 'Out On Left Wing Of Republican Party'

By Mark Finkelstein | May 16, 2011 | 08:13

A  A

Newt Gingrich came in for some serious criticism on today's Morning Joe.

Reacting to footage of Newt on Meet the Press alluding to Paul Ryan's health care proposal as "radical," Joe Scarborough accused Gingrich of being in "the mushy middle." Pat Buchanan came with the unkindest cut of all, saying Gingrich is "out on the left wing of the Republican party."

View video after the jump.

In the MTP clip, Newt was seen saying that while he opposes ObamaCare, he would also be against "a conservative imposing radical change" on the health care system.  He later admitted that his proposal amounts to "a variation" of the individual mandate.

Watch Joe and Pat rip Newt.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Let's first dissect what Newt said. Did he, Mark Halperin, just call Paul Ryan's health care plan "radical"?

MARK HALPERIN: He said the Republican plan went too far, and he's the first major Republican figure to not only not embrace Ryan but to repudiate Ryan.

PAT BUCHANAN: He not only distanced himself from Ryan's plan, which I understand, he repudiated it almost entirely.

SCARBOROUGH: He called it "radical."

BUCHANAN: He called it radical. He is out on, basically, he is out on the left wing of the Republican party on the most crucial economic issue besides the economy itself.

SCARBOROUGH: I've got to say, this confirms my biggest concern about Newt Gingrich over the past 15 years. That rhetorically he's far, far right. But when push comes to shove, he's in the mushy middle.

Just wait for Rush and Levin.

Submitted by Texndoc on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 8:23am.

Newt needs to be "nipped in the bud" today. O-U-T. OUT.
One didn't have to wait long for the : "Paul Ryan, even Newt Gingrich thinks you are EXTREME!"
Rush needs to squash him and Levin needs to bury the corpse.
And Hannity can hang his head in shame for his "Oh, OK" to Newt's lame excuses for his pathetic excuses for adultery to his sitting on the couch fretting about Global Warming with Nancy Pelosi to sucking up to Al Sharpton. No wonder Hannity is Ginrich's "go to" interview.

I agree -- Newt is done practically before he began. Part of this dust-up seems to be "lack of self-discipline" that many have spoken about in regard to Newt...and his healthcare stance is a deal-breaker for most conservatives. Newt needs to get out and not cause anymore confusion/fodder for the MSM to jump on to disempower the rest of the candidates.

This may not be news to anyone on here, but I just heard (on FOX) that Trump is OUT, which is good. I didn't mind how he got in the fray just enough to speak his peace (and stir up some trouble) on some Obama matters, but I am glad he knows when to stop.

From the Sun Sentinel:

The liberal group MoveOn.org plans to protest at Congressman Allen West's town hall meeting in Pompano Beach on Tuesday.

MoveOn's statement: Area MoveOn members will rally inside and outside a town hall meeting Representative West is holding on May17 to protest the Representative's recent vote to cut Medicare funding. The protestors will show up with signs telling Congress to keep their "Hands Off Our Medicare." Last month, Representative West voted, with nearly every other Republican in the House of Representatives, for a budget that would end Medicare as we know it. At the event, MoveOn members will try to hand Representative West a note demanding to know how West can ask seniors to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy through massive cuts in Medicare.

Health care...

Submitted by adamsmith on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 9:02am.

Seems every politician has something to say about one sixth of the US economy. As I wrote over on HotAir.com this morning, Singapore has supposedly the best healthcare system in the world. They have a CASH SYSTEM with NO HEALTH INSURANCE....period...

Ever wonder why health care costs go up 30% a year when nothing else is? That's called government involvement. Why is health insurance tied to employment in any way? An individual should purchase insurance themselves. This is just one huge Ponzi scheme that's not even insurance, it's a health payment plan which enriches insurance companies(parasites), politicians(parasites) and attorneys(parasites) who pull off huge class action suits which they only enrich themselves with(think John Edwards)....

Go to a cash system where the Free Market decides price through supply and demand. Kill Big Government!!!!!!!!

Newt is not the left wing of the GOP. He is the left wing of American politics.

If he's making "shrewd political calculations" to expand his base, he is spending too much time listening to the DC chatter about moving to the center. The left hardly ever moves to the center. And when they do, it's always temporary. When the right moves to the center, the center moves to the left as well.

The center no longer reflects mainstream America.

Newt is merely doing the "Beltway Shuffle"; a bastardization of the two step, which he thinks will set him up to garner some votes from the independent periphery.

The Pelosi couch snuggle, combined with the individual mandate statement(s), means the professorial pundit has now managed to shoot himself in both feet.

He may as well stick that perennial political "finger in the wind" up his own butt.

He a left wing thief like all

Submitted by Semus on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 11:56am.

I just read that a month ago he was pleased Ryan stepped up and produced this plan. It's a different thing to say people should help each other, than saying that a third group should decide when, where, and how much people have to give, this is hard left theft and it's evil.

The two possibilities are Newt feels that above all else he should govern over ... something, and he'd sell his sole to get elected this makes him a political opportunist or he's more to the left than I suspected, either way he's not going to get a brass farthing from me.

Another possibility is he knows his is a lost cause so he'll say what he really feels which really ties in with the latter possibility mentioned above.

Newt: I don't think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering.

Cowboy: What the heck is 'right-wing social engineering'? Minimum government intrusion into our lives and businesses? Free to live our lives by making our own decisions without Big Brother's "help"? Is there even such a thing as 'right-wing social engineering'? I guess the courts might say that "the absence of a plan is a plan".

And to Newt, that's just as bad as left-wing social engineering - Statism. Equal misery for all. Eco-fascism. Government intervention into every minute aspect of our lives.

"when push comes to shove he's (Newt) is in the mushy middle."

Actions while in congress:
Education — Gingrich helped garner support for President Jimmy Carter’s Department of Education in 1979. As Speaker In 1996 Gingrich’s Republican Congress increased education funding by $3.5 billion in 1996, the largest single increase in history.

Big spending
federal spending in all the areas addressed by the 1994 Contract with America rose.

He made a formal appeal to the House of Representatives in 1995 to “increase the power of President Clinton” by repealing the War Powers Act.

Gingrich’s support of abortion and anti-family measures, federal welfare, a presidential line item veto, the National Endowment for the Arts, confiscation of private property, amnesty for illegal immigrants, higher taxes, and a myriad of other unconstitutional legislation.

Futurist
In 1994, Gingrich described himself as “a conservative futurist.” He said that those who were trying to define him should look no further than The Third Wave, a 1980 book written by Alvin Toffler that he endorsed.

The book describes our society as entering a post-industrial phase in which abortion, homosexuality, promiscuity, and divorce are perfectly normal, even virtuous.

The Third Wave chastising the Founding Fathers: “The system of government you fashioned, including the very principles on which you based it, is increasingly obsolete, and hence increasingly, if inadvertently, oppressive and dangerous to our welfare. It must be radically changed and a new system of government invented — a democracy for the 21st century.” He went on to describe our constitutional system as one that “served us so well for so long, and that now must, in its turn, die and be replaced.”

Line Item Veto. It is unconstitutional. Congress passes laws and controls the spending. The President has the option to veto any laws or bills that come to his desk. Winning equates to power and for the political class that is all that is important; getting into power and staying in power. These career politicians all belong to and go to the same clubs, organizations, their kids go to the same private schools, end up marrying each other, meanwhile they think the American public is a bunch of dunces and for the most part they are. There are a hellava lot more people walking among us who can't pick out the VP in a photo line up than those of us who stay informed on what the hell is going on in Washington. All Newt did was give liberal media shills for Obama the opportunity to point fingers at the Republican party and say how they are not unified.  LIBERAL MEDIA WILL USE NEWT'S RIGHT WING COMMENTS (to describe the Ryan plan) to their and the DNC's advantage.  THANKS NEWT!  GREAT MOVE.

Submitted by GG_NB on Wed, 05/18/2011 - 7:09pm.

I will probably get slammed by someone for this, but Newt is having so many continued problems that I am actually starting to feel sorry for him! I know, I know, he's responsible for his own mouth. But this is just getting worse and worse. First the rebuking by key conservatives...then the public scolding by the constituent...then the jewelry flap...then the glitter incident...ugh. I can't watch anymore. It's too painful!

He really should get out of the race -- for his own sake as well as the rest of the candidates. I know he started the ball rolling all on his own, but I do not enjoy seeing him being humiliated, and he just doesn't seem to have a clue on how to handle himself. It's just a terrible train wreck that never seems to end. I've gone from being irritated by his careless comments to really feeling sorry for the guy. Ugh.

"If not us, who? If not now, when?"
