Morning Joe Regular Accuses US Special Operations In Afghanistan Of 'High-Tech Murder On A Large Scale'

By Mark Finkelstein | May 11, 2011 | 08:41

A  A

Left-wing Columbia Professor Jeffrey Sachs, a frequent Morning Joe guest, has accused US special operations forces of committing "high-tech murder on a large scale" for their targeted campaign of killing or capturing Al Qaeda Taliban forces in Afghanistan.

Sachs made his contemptible accusation on today's Morning Joe in the course of a discussion of the PBS Frontline documentary "Kill/Capture" on the JSOC operations.  Stephen Grey, a producer of the documentary, was a guest.

View video after the jump.

JEFFREY SACHS: I know these countries from the ground, what these villages are like.  People are hungry, they don't have employment, they don't have income. And the idea that you can murder your way to a successful society strikes me as very, very odd.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Well, but Dr. Sachs, the idea that you can develop a society that is still way, way behind in the Third World is naive as well.

SACHS: But I'm saying, the idea that this is going to be in some targeted way, high-tech murder on a large scale, that you're getting the right people.  What are the right people in this sense?  These are kids in villages.

NOTE:  None of the Morning Joe panel members, consisting of Mika Brzezinksi, Mike Barnicle and Mark McKinnon [of 'No Labels'], made a peep of protest in response to Sachs' loathsome allegation.

I was wondering was the panels silence COMPLIANCE with the thoughts or they all KNEW that if they said anything they would have been hypocritical considering they bashed Boooooosh for doing this stuff OR they are so leg tingly over their hero Obambi doing SOMETHING GOOD, they are just ignoring the rest of LIFE and FACTS.....................

Tomorama...

Submitted by Jer on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 9:21am.

What is perceived as a "dead end" policy in Afghanistan has been slammed from both the 'left' and the 'right' for quite some time on Morning Joe. And since he is the current CIC in charge of that policy, there has been no reluctance on the part of most of the panelists to criticize Obama for his role in it.

Osama vs. Hitler

Submitted by adamsmith on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 9:11am.

What exactly is he accusing us of? There is no victory plan here which is what's aggravating to me. As far as Bin Laden's son goes, I have to agree with him that Osama was murdered. There was no "Capture/Kill" order, it was kill no matter what and destroy the evidence in 24 hours. I was thinking this morning what if the Russians had done that with Hitler? Would the US have been cheering Stalin or screaming out WHY? Osama should have been taken to Gitmo, waterboarded, then tried as a War Criminal in a U.S. Martial court, convicted and hanged like Saddam. Why did all this happen the way it did? Why hasn't anyone compared it with Hitler, which was a fairly comparative situation? This thing has smelled to me from the beginning. Rush said yesterday that he "doesn't agree with them", but a lot of U.S. servicemen have been emailing in saying the whole thing is a fraud. Why would Rush bring it up if it had no merit? Of course he denied a conspiracy could have taken place. Maybe he just wanted to get people wondering. I'm not a conspiracy nut, but taking the Hitler analogy, something with all this was never right.

So did we murder Bin Laden? No, of course not. We would never do such a thing.

It was a legal thing, we found him to be in breech of his existence contract, and given our apparent authority in the matter, we terminated said contract. With prejudice. No biggie.

Murder is defined as the unlawful killing of another human being.
The armed forces are doing their jobs. Wars are won by killing the other side until they surrender or die. Wars can end when one or both sides stop fighting. It all depends on what each side's goal is. Don't whine because our armed forces are good at what they do.

The "professor" needs to get

Submitted by bassndude on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 9:53am.

The "professor" needs to get out more. Perhaps he should go back to school. He should know by now that the military's sole purpose is to free souls from their physical restraints. To put it simply so he can understand, they live to kill people like OBL. That is their job. Their reason for living.

to provide the context and depth which is afforded by the full nine-minute segment  [scroll down to "Inside the World of Kill/Capture Campaigns" video] from which the brief excerpt was yanked. The topic was one of much greater dimension and elicited far more nuanced views than Sachs' glib "murder" reference alone might otherwise suggest.

I Say Hoorah

Submitted by Owasco on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 1:34pm.

We are at war with radical Islam. Osama Bin Laden helped start the war. He was fair game to be shot on sight by any red blooded American, no questions asked. Being ex-Navy myself, I am not going to criticize our brave U.S. Navy Seals who took him out. They probably burst into his room, told him to freeze in Arabic, he made a move for a nearby AK-47, and they capped him. What did you expect the Seals to do, feel his pain and read him his Miranda rights?

Capture and try OBL in Gitmo so the radical Muslims can capture American hostages and demand his release. I don't think so.

I get emotional about this issue; I lost a cousin on 9/11/01. He was a NYC firefighter heading up the stairs of tower 1 trying to help people when it collapsed. I'm not going to lose any sleep over the way this Bin Laden operation went down.

Was that Mika I saw......?

Submitted by Herbster on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 2:48pm.

Was that Mika I saw under the "Professor's" desk.....?

This "Professor" is the kind of garbage that is teaching in our "Institutions of higher learning." Unfortunately, he is not a minority. The left has co-opted our educational system from pre-K through grad school. Women's Studies, Queer Studies, Latino Studies, Black Studies, Asian Studies, How evil America is Studies, etc. Guess I missed out when I attended college. We studied History, Literature, (Maya Angelou hadn't been discovered yet) Higher Mathematics, etc. We had a core of knowledge that one needed to graduate, along with DIFFICULT electives. One of my electives was Astronomy...Fascinating and challenging...we didn't have courses such as, "Silent horror films as a reflection of our evil, capatalistic society as seen through the eyes of Josef Stalin.." We read Shakespeare, Conrad, Whitman, Byron, Kant, Schopenhauer, Tolstoy, etc....and had to actually WRITE PAPERS showing that we UNDERSTOOD what we were reading. Yes, you had to know how to WRITE to get into college. How times have changed. Now we produce "Educated fools," like the "Professor." I have to assume that he ascribes to the school of thought that believes, "If I am nice to my enemies, the alligator will eat me last.." I have news for this gentleman.....with a name like "Sachs," the alligator will not eat him, but behead him FIRST! I suppose he believes that the beheading of Daniel Pearl was Mr. Pearl's fault......9/11 was "Our fault," etc. What a scumbag. Worse yet, these are the (Continuing) type of people that are given airtime on this repulsive show. COMCAST....where are you?

Submitted by amyshulk on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 10:25pm.

I do wonder if Joe was on how this convo would have gone, since Joe has been pounding the table on getting out of Afghanistan to the point of annoyance. And Barnicle with his "we send other people's kids off to war so we don't have skin in the game" is particularly offensive,
