Andrea Mitchell Mocks Bush With 'Mission Accomplished'

By Mark Finkelstein | May 02, 2011 | 08:44

Change font size:  A |  A

Commenting on the death of Osama Bin Laden, Rep. Gary Ackerman has gloated: "this is the 'Mission Accomplished' moment President Bush only fantasized about."  Could the Dem from New York have gotten the inspiration for his taunt from Andrea Mitchell?

The question arises because in the run-up to President Obama's announcement last night, Mitchell said something similar, if not quite as pointedly partisan.

Not only did Mitchell throw Mission Accomplished in Pres. Bush's face, she also, for purposes of taking another slap at Pres. Bush, misrepresented the history of Tora Bora.   Mitchell claimed that John Kerry made it a 2004 campaign issue on the basis that OBL could have been killed or captured there "if troops had not been moved to Iraq."  But the Battle of Tora Bora took place in 2001 and the Iraq war didn't start until 2003. Hat tip NB reader Mr. Forward.

View video after the jump.

Watch Mitchell make like a hack Dem partisan.

ANDREA MITCHELL: This became an issue in the campaign of 2004.  John Kerry arguing that [OBL] could have been captured in Tora Bora if troops had not been moved from Afghanistan to Iraq, so that became a big campaign issue.

Another irony: this is the eighth anniversary, May 1st, of "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq, the appearance by President George W. Bush on the Abraham Lincoln, that declaration, which we know was a premature declaration, became a controversy in itself.  But Mission Accomplished became an iconic phrase in US political policy and political parlance and now this could be President Obama coming out, and without literally saying it, having accomplished it, accomplished the mission that two American presidents tried before to capture or kill Osama Bin Laden.

Just lie. Just make it up.

Submitted by Red Jeep on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 8:57am.

The "Mission Accomplished" banner had to do with the ship the President was on completing its mission, but no matter, just lie, spin.

What is this intense hatred of President Bush all about? The 2000 election? Were Libs convinced that if algore was elected everything would become wonderful?

It just boggles the mind, this intense hatred. It is beyond just not liking someone it is absolute hate, a mental sickness.

Just curious IF the media will report the whole story that this all BEGAN in 2005 back with a detainee at .................................................... GITMO that gave them the name of one of the few that UBL trusted, one of his main couriers, and stated HE WAS THE KEY to capture UBL as he KNOWS where he is.

Happy as all hell, the Navy (yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Navy) seals got him with intelligence and other cooperation SUPPOSEDLY from Pakistan.

But this would NOT have happened without the initial info gleaned from a GITMO detainee.

Isn't that a kick in the crotch Booooooosh haters?

Undocumented Journalist: Andrea Mitchell

Submitted by MoYo on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 9:09am.

Mitchell graduated with a B.A. in English literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967. Here is yet another example of a so-called professional journalist having never been educated in the field. (Think Chuck Todd, Anderson Cooper, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, to name just a few.) Her bias is out of ignorance....

Mitchell sleeps with Alan Greenspan

Submitted by ConservaSerb on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 9:17am.

That's all I need to know about her mindset.

http://www3.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Andrea+Mitchell+Alan+Greenspan+2010+W...

I have little doubt that she feeds the old guy dog food and uses his millions for more plastic surgery than Joan Rivers.

Oh, and this is important when you judge her "credibility" and "fairness:"

During an appearance on MSNBC on June 5, 2008, Mitchell came under fire when she referred to the voters of the southwest Virginia region as rednecks. On June 9, Mitchell apologized for her comment stating:

And now, a point of personal privilege. I owe an apology to the good people of Bristol, Virginia, for something stupid that I said last week. I was trying to explain, based on reporting from Democratic strategists, why Barack Obama was campaigning in southwest Virginia, but without attribution or explanation, I used a term strategists often use to demean an entire community. No excuses, I'm really sorry. As they say, when I make a mistake, it's a beaut.

When BarryHO leaves the White House in January 2013, and if the old witch is still around, I'll be the first to sent her a "mission accomplished," and maybe I can find someone to hand deliver it.

Tora Bora

Submitted by Ashrak on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 9:12am.

went down as it did because it was "coalition forces" - as in multi lateral operation.

Will Obama now be accused of unilateral action, warmongering action, where KILLING was the goal, operating in a country where no war was declared in any way shape or form?

So many now have to think so hard about what they have said - as so many others are poised to show examples just like this article.

Listen up lefties - it is a great deal easier to live your life another way, try just telling the TRUTH and you won;t have to play the hedge game you have to play now.

Ayman Al Zawahiri has always been the Al Qaeda action man. Notice how media is avoiding mentioning his name. They do so for one reason - that would open Soetoro up to failing to get him.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Unilateral action

Submitted by ConservaSerb on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 9:20am.

Violating the airspace of a sovereign nation. Killing its citizens and/or guests. And murdering a man who hasn't been convicted of anything, let alone sentenced.

Imagine if a GOP administration had done that. Of course, since Barry is a Muslim, it makes it OK, right?

Could not stomach her commentary last night

Submitted by falcon on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 9:55am.

We flipped it over to NBC to see what was going on (of course, thanks to Twitter, we already knew), and couldn't take more than two minutes of the old hag.

Then flipped over to Fox News. Oops, there's Jerry Rivers (Geraldo Rivera) and his dancing mustache. Ick.

Finally had to flip over to CNN. (And I NEVER watch CNN.) A little easier to stomach, but not much, because the Obama-worship was already being laid on thick and heavy.

President Bush has more class in his little finger than Obama or Andrea Mitchell have in their whole bodies. And neither care about truth even when it slaps them up beside the face. Their whole mantra is how can this help "The WON."

Why on earth would Adrea Mitchell choose this moment in history to embarrass herself? Pretty much everyone but Keith Olbermann knows what that "Mission Accomplished" banner was about by now. Is a dig at Bush so important to her that she doesn't care how petty and ignorant she sounds? -bidn-

This will surely be the theme

Submitted by bkeyser on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 11:01am.

This will surely be the theme over the next several days - Obama did what Bush couldn't. Leaving aside, of course, the simple fact that this demise of OBL is a result of nearly ten years of work -not two as this report seems to suggest- it'll be illuminating to look back on this day and these types of reports a year from now.

We'll still be in Afghanistan. We may have dealt with one or more successful attacks as a result of this, in every sense, heroic and outstanding action by the SeALs and CIA. And more Americans will have died and been injured as we must continue this fight.

But these "Mission Accomplished" calls will be available for us all to review and remind the left as they wander around bewildered, wondering why their hero, the great and powerful O, has yet to end the war on terror. I'll enjoy seeing and hearing their astonished disappointment almost as much as the news about OBL.

Accomplished?

Submitted by Gat New York on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:38pm.

To Gary Ackerman and Andrea Mitchell:

Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, leader of the Palestinian militant Hamas government in Gaza: "We regard this as a continuation of the American policy based on oppression and the shedding of Muslim and Arab blood. We condemn the assassination and the killing of an Arab holy warrior. We ask God to offer him mercy with the true believers and the martyrs."

Does that sound like Mission Accomplished?????

Under Obama's watch the Middle East has gone from bad to the worst. So much for the thrill of the Arab Awakening. I expect there will be either stone silence or more comments such as these from governments like Egypt.

Bin Laden was a powerless leader and nothing more than symbol. He had already accomplished creating a leaderless terror network that still operates and has only gotten bigger and more diverse.

Under Obama, not only to you have a more empowered Iran theocracy, you have the rebirth of the Muslim Brotherhood who will be taking control of Egypt, Libya, and possibly Syria. You have Hamas making peace with Fatah and still not recognizing Israel. Under Obama the Middle East is becoming what Bin laden had envisioned.
