David Gregory's Long Tall Smooch To Obama

By Mark Finkelstein | May 01, 2011 | 08:59

A  A

President George W. Bush's nickname for David Gregory was "Stretch."  True to his moniker, the elongated Meet The Press host gave a long, tall, three-part smooch to President Obama during his appearance on this morning's Today Show.

Speaking with weekend Today co-host Jenna Wolfe: Gregory reported favorably on: 1. the Tripoli bombing that might have killed members of Khaddafy's family; 2. the president's handling of the devastating tornadoes that hit the South; and 3. how the president and Seth Meyers supposedly got the better of Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner.

View video after the jump.

Watch Gregory soliticously serve as a weekend fill-in for White House press sec Jay Carney.

Gregory began by dutifully transmitting the White House line on the Tripoli bombing that might have killed one of Khaddafy's sons and three of his grandchilden.  Nary a discouraging word was heard from Gregory as he reported the Obama admin view that the bombing was "necessary" and that "the more trauma . . . that could be created right next to him, in his family," the better.  Do you think Gregory would have been so uncritical if it had been Pres. Bush who ordered the strike, or might he have raised humanitarian or international-law concerns?

Turning to the tornadoes, Gregory heaped more praise: "you've seen the President and the First Lady go there, be there, show up, and I think that's the role of the president at a time like this . . . the president is doing what presidents need to do."

Finally, Today rolled a clip of President Obama taking a shot at Donald Trump at last night's White House Correspondents Association Dinner.  Cut to Gregory, laughing appreciatively at the president's lines. When Wolfe suggested that Trump took the many jabs in stride, Gregory suggested that PBO got the better of the exchange: "I understand that he wasn not in necessarily in on the joke as much.  They [Obama and Meyers] skewered him pretty good, both of them."

Murder.

Submitted by Red Jeep on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 9:19am.

It was murder to kill Khaddafy's son and grandchildren. I don't care how awful a man Khaddafy is. This act was murder.

The U.S should not be involved in Libya in any way. But this is OBAMA's WAR so it's A-OK with the MSM.

Must be the Obama kissers in the MSM think Trump is a threat to their boy and must be mocked and ridiculed.

So, I assume you also believe it was murder

when an infant girl--and possible daughter of Khaddafy--was killed during the air attacks ordered by Reagan in 1986.

The deaths of innocents were tragic then and now, but not murder.

Just a bit of difference

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 5:33pm.

There are a few differences between then and now.  Reagan did everything approved by Congress, a DEMOCRAT Congress too.  It was a direct attack on Khaddafi due to a Berlin disco being bombed under orders from Libya.

The Chairman is not doing it with approval from Congress.  Not only that, it was supposed to be a few days and it's been over 40 days.  Also, this so called action was said to be a humanitarian mission, not even close.  This "action" is supposedly helping rebels, which is questionable at best, but at worst, these rebels have terrorist members in them(Al qaida, hamas, hezbollah, muslim brotherhood).  Taking either side doesn't help the US in any way shape or form.

HUGE differences between the 1986 attack and now.  Don't even try to compare the two.

So your argument is that the current intervention in Libya is illegal and immoral and therefore all fatalities caused by American airstrikes constitute murder.

Will you list the names of the Republican congressmen and senators who have expressed that view?

Thanks...

No.

I'm saying no because you didn't make the same request to MidAmerica who pretty much said the same thing I did.

And no, that was not my argument.  Go back and read the whole thing this time, and if you don't get it, read MidAmerica's and put the two together.  Here's a clue:  Congress approved.

it's not like there aren't plenty of Libyans anyway

Submitted by MidAmerica on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 7:54pm.

At this point in time this misadventure in Libya is not illegal but is fast approaching a truly immoral use of our military. There is no justification for the US to be bombing this country and killing innocent civilians who happen to be in the wrong place.  This was supposed to be a HUMANITARIAN protection of Libyans not a war of regime change.  Unless obama can prove that Libya was an imminent threat to the US he has blood on his hands.

Obama ran as a candidate decrying the Cowboy Bush's heavy handed foreign policies whereas he, obama, was going to do things smarter.  Instead he is being very very dumb.

Why I said no

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 7:57pm.

I said no to the request of naming Republican congressmen and senators because there's a mixed bag of responses to the situation on both sides.  Kucinich is one such example.

I still stand by the original response, the difference  between the two incidents is when Reagan ordered the attack, it was approved by Congress in advance with a clear goal.

There was no such approval in this current case, and there's nothing clear about what's happening except there are terrorists mixed in with those rebels and taking either side doesn't make any difference.

This so-called humanitarian effort is anything but.  NATO is wrong, the UN is wrong, The Chairman is DEFINITELY wrong and has broken the law in ordering the attacks with NATO without ANY consultation (despite what the WH says, they are lying, among all the other lies) to Congress.  Out of all the impeachable offenses this bogus potus has done, this is the worst yet and just one more sign he's acting the dictator.  They have less than 20 days to explain themselves, and there's no way that they can, but I'd bet they'll put out some half-assed explanation that's swiss-cheesed full of holes anyway.

There's NO way this is in dispute.

t'ain't the same

Submitted by MidAmerica on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 5:44pm.

Reagan's attack was a direct retaliation to an attack by Khaddafy on US interests.

Obama's current war is just a make it up as you go along military adventure.  We were belatedly told by obama that he and NATO were going to stop a massacre by providing a no fly zone to keep the Colonels air force on the ground.  Now this farce has evolved to where we are involved in a civil war, on the side of we don't know who, and we are now conducting strategic bombing.  What was once a humanitarian mission is now a mission to topple a government no matter who gets killed.

as the death of any innocent as a result of collateral damage in "war" is tragic; and I doubt any reasonable person would think differently.

The issue might be how a liberal democrat in the Oval Office, especially the Messiah, is not put in the cross-hairs of the media for an action that would put a Republican dead center in those same sights.

Somebody help me. What did

Submitted by ricklail on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 9:53am.

Somebody help me. What did the Ice Cream Emperor do that was so great in Bama? He walked around a bit and said it was devastating. He could have done that in DC. He didn't do a thing for the folks here in NC. Those that lived on based at Camp Lejeune got immediate help and were moved to other housing. Those Marines and sailors that lived off base along Piney Green Road are doing the best they can. He ain't done crap as far as I am concerned about the tornadoes that went through the South.

The storms that swept through here were nothing to joke about but I did get a little chuckle out of this.

Disturbing title

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 12:59pm.

That title evokes a very uncomfortable image.

And that thing about the bombings, what's the point of them if your intent is not to kill with bombs?  Structural re-organization?(in other words, blowing up buildings)  BTW, curious that Grahamnesty is calling for drones to be used there.  Wasn't he one of the ones besides Kucinich calling for the Chairman's impeachment?

And the Chairman going to the tornado-stricken areas.....give me a break, he looked so out of place there.  He had the demeanor of "I don't want to be here, I wanted to watch the space shuttle lift off in the space program I'm closing down."

This country is pretty much done for.

Are we sure?

The bombing of family members, and having the unoffical spokes person Gregory touting it is a bit much. Where have the cast of savior's gone that during W's years told me war acts serve as recuritment tools. Hunting and killing families was murder? And heaven forbit not going to the Demorat Congress grounds for impeachment. Before straining our resources on a draining third war.

Budget wise, fix Frannie, Freddie, Post Office, Amtrac, Fed, stop funding PP, NPR, UN, and cut foriegn aid rather than taxing success. How big a dent is that? Go after failures rather than success', novel idea.

What a change in such a short time my so many pricipled people and groups. I long for the days when war was bad, stealings was bad, and GITMO needed to go away.

murdering by executive order

Submitted by MidAmerica on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 2:58pm.

How exactly is obama able to conduct a war on his own authority? Where is the Republican leadership on this?   GWB would have been subject to impeachment for less.

Do we now have a situation where the President has the authority to use our country's military as just another function of the executive branch?

....and why is little Graham Cracker out there leading the charge to assassinate Gaddaffi.?  He's providing cover for obama and this botched military exercise. (remember it was sold to us as just providing a no fly zone and now we are killing children with missiles and when this is all over with we will be stuck with billions of dollars in aid to rebuild Libya)

So many days

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 3:24pm.

The Chairman has about 2.5 weeks to explain his actions, which on the face of it, there's no way to justify any of it, even with that misnomer of "humanitarian mission" that NATO is doing.  They might as well start impeachment proceedings now.  I doubt they will though, the repubs have proved once again at the leadership level they are just chickensh!t.

Yes, a president would have 60 days war fighting privileges, but this isn't the way to go, especially since taking Kadaffi out would be aiding the terrorists we are fighting which is al qaida.  Like I said, there's no way to justify it, especially when the outcome is that it'll still be run by a terrorists, just different ones.

So once again Grahamnesty proves what a total idiot he is calling for Kadaffi's ouster.

The Chairman's really made a mess of things in the ME and in Africa.  And it was intentional too.

Mid America refers to Republican leadership.......

Submitted by Herbster on Sun, 05/01/2011 - 4:15pm.

Unfoirtunately, "Republican leadership" is now an oxymoron. And speaking of morons, McCain's butt boy, Lindsay Gramnesty continues to embarrass. Don't the people of his state have the good sense to get rid of this total clown?

Didn't obambi state that we'd only be involved with Libya for a few days? That we had no aim to kill Gaddaffi? Killing innocent civilians. Can you imagine the screams from the mediapimps if a republican was responsible for this?
Sadly, obambi will be reelected. Any republican who runs against him has to also run against the media. They will use any method, state any lie in order to denigrate anyone daring to challenge our present demander in chief. He demands - the media follows.

Those "Journalists" who booed Donald Trump. I can hear them now stating, "Are you questioning my journalistic ethics?" No, Mr. pimp, No, Mrs. Pimpette. I cannot question that does not exist.

Without an honest media, we are doomed to having communistic politicians in office.
