Halperin: MSM Would Savage GOP President Calling Opponents' Budget Un-American Like Obama Did
Mark Halperin . . . on a roll!
Yesterday, we noted that the MSNBC analyst was surprisingly respectful to Donald Trump. Today, Halperin offered more refreshingly objective analysis. Commenting on President Obama's budget speech of yesterday, Halperin observed that if a Republican had called a Dem budget un-American, in the same way that PBO pummeled Republican proposals, the MSM "would be up in arms."
Joe Scarborough added that it was simply bad politics for the president to give Paul Ryan a front-row seat, only to insult his proposals as un-American and lacking courage or realism.
View video after the jump.
Watch Halperin tell it like it is about the MSM's double standard.
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Now, the president did get political in his speech, taking a few veiled shots at Paul Ryan's budget plan. Take a listen.
BARACK OBAMA: This vision is less about reducing the deficit than it is about changing the basic social compact in America . . . Ronald Reagan's own budget director said there's nothing serious or courageous about this plan . . . There's nothing serious about a plan that claims to reduce the deficit by spending a trillion dollars on tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. And I don't think there's anything courageous about asking for sacrifice from those who can least afford it and don't have any clout on Capitol Hill . . . That's not a vision of the America I know.
MARK HALPERIN: I think if a Republican president called the Democratic proposals on something like this un-American, I think the press would be up in arms.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: They would savage him.
HALPERIN: They would be up in arms. I think that kind of rhetoric: for the president to say, that what Paul Ryan is doing is not consistent with his vision of America, I think that's rhetoric that only added insult, injury to the insult of inviting him to sit in the front row.
SCARBOROUGH: Republicans have said a lot of really, really tough things about Barack Obama. Really tough things. So, it's not even the words, it's not the rhetoric. I think the president does believe that the Ryan plan is not the America that he grew up in or the America he wants. I'm just saying, for negotiating reasons, why invite him to sit in the front row and say that his budget is not serious and is un-American when Paul Ryan's been fighting his entire life for this?
HALPERIN: I totally agree. It seems like a weird decision to make.

Funny if they become a little bit more critical & then see Obama put the screws to them. Then they will have a revelation. Perhaps anyway... maybe they won't. Not so bright over there. The water temperature is rising pretty fast. Not sure they will notice & jump out to SAVE us ALL! MSM for the most part are traitors of Country! Near zero allegiance to THEIR founding fathers & the documents we ARE TO GO BY!

I thought insults like "un-American" were off the table???
He also claimed that Ryan's budget would pit "children with autism or Down's syndrome" against "every millionaire and billionaire in our society."
Maybe the president should re-read his 2008 campaign speeches where he promised to usher in that "new kind of politics."

Is it me or WAS THERE NO pretext of this Obambi plan in the wind at all, UNTIL Ryan and the Republicans acted like grown ups and put out a plan?
Then all of a sudden, the coward in chief had this great "the only grown up in the room plan"?
I would love Obambi and Ryan to debate right now there respective "plans" and I BET MY HOUSE that Ryan would wipe the floor with him as Obambi has no details and no clue about his plan written by someone else and fed into the binkyprompter.
Ryan on the other hand knows his plan cold.
Manchurian cowardly presentdent.
Plan????? He don't need no stinking plan!!

I found this earlier this AM at townhall. Guy Benson has Obama's "plan" figured out:
the president applied the Underpants Gnomes approach to achieving entitlement-preserving savings:
Step 1: Think about Medicare and Medicaid savings.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Hundreds of Billions in Medicare and Medicaid savings!
Change "think" to "talk" and that's Obama in a nutshell.
As George Will says, Obama seems to think "he can speak things into existence."

Tomorama - Excellent insight! I think you are right about that whole development. The "roll out" was such a transparent political campaign sham. Now he is a budget cutter! Yet he is for more spending. When "he" cut taxes in extending the current tax rates, he took credit for it. That it was a good thing & will help the economy. Now he is for raising taxes. Why is that not a bad thing? What has changed since December? He is truly is a liar, liar, liar! HOW is it BARY BONDS can get a felony for lying and this guy is in our oval office lying to US and CONGRESS right & left! Put the tard under oath and interrogate him. He is a traitor to State so bring on charges & do it! His ideas are full on against our Constitution! What more do we need? HE TOOK AN OATH!

Mortgage deductions and charitable deductions are going to be cut.

People really think you can tax "corporations" and they will just accept the reduction in their bottom line. That manufacturers and farmers, and producers of other goods will not pass their costs on to the consumer.
We had this discussion the other day; a commenter thought we should have everyone share the burden with a flat tax on individuals AND corporations.
To which I replied: Corporations don't pay taxes. Individuals pay taxes.
This is insanity
Submitted by Tomorama on Thu, 04/14/2011 - 12:39pm.
That was my point MB, he is saying that the majority of this will just be the nasty millionaires and billionaires, but a funny thing happened on the way to the forum...........................
Folks who collectively make 250,000 WILL BE EFFECTED and not just the M's and B's...
Mortgage write offs and charity write offs will be cut.
Damn, that effects the uh, uh, uh, uh, uh , uh poor doesn't it?

Since I have yet to give my obligatory plug for Joe Scarborough this week, I'll note that as I was getting ready to take my son to the bus stop and listening to Morning Joe a little after 6:00 a.m., he was absolutely eviscerating Obama for the speech in general and in particular for sharply criticizing the budget proposals of Paul Ryan who was seated in the front row.
Scarborough suggested the President can only be considered--if memory serves--a "left-wing ideologue out of touch with reality", and Mark Halperin also literally blistered Obama for the tone of the speech.
Hope that makes you feel better.

The Obama 2012 Re-Election Campaign was launched ...
Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 04/14/2011 - 9:44am.
. . . yesterday.
The tactic is to get your opposition up close and berate them in public with distorted half-truths and out-and-out lies. It's like hauling a student up in front of the class and chewing them out.
Obama did the same in the 2010 State of the Union address when he essentially scolded the US Supreme Court for a decision on political contributions while the justices sat there up front, bound by tradition to silence.
The tactic is supposed to demonstrate authority, but it actually demonstrates a total lack of leadership. Obama has no leadership qualities, but he does display the traits of a political hack.
I find it somewhat surprising....

So the MSM is finally realizing that they got a thug voted into the Presidency? This is the Chicago Way! How dare We The People to question him? This is tyranny and no less!
Demagogues like Obama trot
Submitted by Smartypants on Thu, 04/14/2011 - 2:27pm.
Demagogues like Obama trot out the tired "millionaires and billionaires" line, and then propose tax increases on anyone making more than $200K ($250K for married people). Nobody in the media points out this disconnect, at least not in the msm. The Democrats have never proposed a tax increase on just "millionaires and billionaires," yet they act as if that is their focus. The entire party is devoid of character and integrity. They will say or do anything to win power. They told us we lost the Iraq War while we had boots on the ground; they destroyed a US president's credibility to the world for no other purpose than to win back their own power. I cringe whenever some fool proclaims that "both sides do it". That is a canard used by idiots who are not really paying attention. Republican leaders are far from perfect, but I do not see this kind of brazen manipulation being pulled off on a regular basis by that party.

update. Here is a preliminary article which deals with the issue. I believe it was eventually put to a vote at some point, and voted down generally along party lines.
Follow-up on ending tax cut for millionaires only...
Submitted by Jer on Thu, 04/14/2011 - 3:06pm.
The question of what would happen then became more relevant after Republicans lost control of Congress in 2006. Democrats, including Barack Obama both as a candidate and as president, vowed to end the cuts for the upper-income households that had benefited most handsomely from them. Republicans were just as determined to make them permanent across the board.
During the 2010 Congressional campaign, Senate Democrats decided to punt on the issue, worried that a vote to end some of the cuts could be used against vulnerable candidates. But the huge gains Republicans made in the elections changed the dynamics of the issue. Certain of greater power in 2011, with the House in their hands, Republicans announced they would block all legislation in the lame-duck session until all the cuts were extended.
The House passed a bill reflecting Mr. Obama's call for the cuts to be extended only on income below $250,000 per household. But Democrats failed to break a Republican filibuster in the Senate on that approach, or an alternative "millionaire's tax.'' [emphasis added]
