Sanders: Rich 'Have Not Contributed One Nickel To Deficit Reduction'

By Mark Finkelstein | April 04, 2011 | 21:32

A  A

Bernie, put down the bong!

On Cenk Uygur's MSNBC show this evening, Bernie Sanders, the socialist senator from Vermont who caucuses with the Dems, claimed that rich Americans "have not contributed one nickel to deficit reduction."

Cenk of course failed to challenge Sander's certifiably silly assertion.

View video after the jump.

Watch Bernie defy reality, and consider that in the last analyzed year, the top 1% paid . . . 38% of all federal income taxes.

CENK UYGUR: How are you going to rally progressives? I'm not putting it all on you.  I know you're a great progressive.  How do you . . . how do we get the president on our side?

BERNIE SANDERS: It's millions of people saying, Mr. President, we voted for you because you told us you were going to defend working Americans. Now is the time to stand up to the big-money interests, ask for shared sacrifice, don't balance the budget on the backs of the elderly, the poor and the sick.  If you do that, you're going to have tremendous popular support.  I would like to see a couple of hundred thousand people come here to Washington, say hello to the president, say hello to the Republicans, say do not balance the budget on the middle class, the working families in this country, when the richest people are getting richer.  They have not contributed one nickel to deficit reduction.

Sanders - Cenk Uygur. Let's set the record straight, OK?

Submitted by Gary Hall on Mon, 04/04/2011 - 11:57pm.

During the Clinton era - not the Bush era - OK?

In 1993, the top 1% earned 13.7% of total income earned.

By 2000, the number soared to 20.81% - as David Kay Johnston so famously wrote in the NYT's a few years later - "the first time since the roaring 20's that the rich took such a large portion of the income."

Way to go Bill Clinton.

If you want to stress that point, then at least blame the man at the helm when it occurred - Bill Clinton.

A shaky grasp on reality.

Submitted by Phryj1 on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 12:06am.

Yup. Redistributionist idiots love to harp about the rich (although they never seem to complain about their OWN wealth, just other people's) supposedly not paying enough taxes, even though as the article states they are the source of about 38% of federal tax revenue. Not to mention, but the more money rich people make, the more taxes they pay. The more taxes they pay, the more the deficit goes down. Simple as that.

Then again, I don't expect anything resembling rational thought from people whose idea of "progress" is socialism, an ideology that caused millions of deaths in the 20th century and gave rise to several brutal, oppressive, authoritarian regimes.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

When?

Submitted by adamsmith on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 7:50am.

When exactly was it that the "Rich" were no longer Americans, or even human beings? The greatness of this country and the appeal to people the globe over who want to come here has always been that, by the sweat of one's brow, anyone could become rich in America, whereas one's station in life was predetermined in all other parts of the world. That's why we have always been exceptional, and exactly why Obama can never view us as that. He hates Capitalism. I hate class warfare arguments as much as all the other Progressive garbage. They can only "win" by dividing Americans instead of uniting. When a Democrat, Progressive, Socialist, Communist is in charge, no one is happy. Does this country feel happy under the current Communist in Chief? If you ask me, this is the Great Depression 2.0.............................

ONLY the evil rich pay taxes, Melvin.  And the "working poor"?  I realize an envy-driven committed Socialist like you won't grasp this, but 99% of this country works.  Even the rich people you believe you have the right to steal from work.  In fact, I would argue they work harder than most others, hence their being rich.

Thanks for showing us that you see taxes as a big "get-even" mechanism and a way for you to legally steal from those you despise.

Submitted by Bourbeau on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 7:00am.

The "rich", whoever the hell you define them to be, pay their taxes. You, as a member of Congress, spend those taxes, not to mention quite recklessly. Hence, deficit reduction, which is necessary now because of your decades of reckless behavior, is a result of cutting spending - THAT'S YOUR JOB STUPID!!!!! You don't need a nickel to cut the deficit, you need courage, thoughtful discussion and hard decision. Of course, none of those are anything we've seen from you lately.

You're right, it's not "one cent." It's more like tens of billions. That interest MUST be paid, or the Government won't find anyone to loan them any money. Since the government DOES get 30 day loans every single month (it's how the government funds month to month operations while running a deficit), well, SOMEONE must be getting paid, don't ya think?

The fed doesn't get every cent from taxes. They print money and borrow as they see fit. There is no way on earth that any tax revenue is going toward interest on our debt, because the money is already spent. You realize we're broke, don't you? The gvmt spends far more than it takes in.

Shared sacrifice, Bernie?

Submitted by Unsilent_Minority on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 10:22am.

Really?! Is that what you really want, shared sacrifice? Because the way I see it, we ALL want 'shared sacrifice', that is, for everyone to pay their fair share, not continue to live as a society where those of us who work hard to take care of our families are paying not only our bills, but the bills of those who consume welfare programs' money at will. You, Mr. Sanders, are a bald-faced liar, as you don't actually want 'shared sacrifice', you want those of us who have worked hard, made a decent living on our own accomplishments and abilities, to carry the burden of the welfare class as well, while rich Socialist bastards such as yourself live like kings and peer down your noses at the peasants. You, my friend, belong in a cell.

If you voted for Obama to prove you're not racist, OK. But this time, vote against him to prove you're not an idiot. "I'm the kind of Conservative Republican your Democrat friends warned you about."
