MSNBC's Cenk Uygur and Dem Congressman: Dissent Is Unpatriotic

By Mark Finkelstein | March 24, 2011 | 22:36

A  A

Q. When did liberals rip those 'Dissent Is Patriotic' bumper stickers off their Priuses?

A. January 20, 2009

Latest evidence: on his MSNBC show this evening, Cenk Uygur suggested that opposition to President Obama's Libya policy is "unpatriotic." For good measure, Dem congressman Gary Ackerman stated that opposing the president is "cheering for the wrong team."

View video after the jump.

To his credit, liberal Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne dissented, saying he doesn't like it when people who are opposed to policy are criticized as unpatriotic.

But could Cenk, Ackerman and their ilk possibly be more hypocritical?

GARY ACKERMAN: I believe that he [President Obama] has this exactly right, and the Republicans are having a fit over it because they don't know what to do.  Their entire purpose is to pull the rug from out under the president and sabotage his administration and his success which of course is the success of our country.  That's not what we could be cheering for and be happy about. That should not be our goal.  When I disagreed with President Bush I hoped I was wrong and not him because he was dictating the policy and it was unacceptable for our country to get it wrong.  They're cheering for the wrong team, which is what the problem is.

CENK UYGUR: Because I remember the Bush years, and if you said anything against Bush it was: oh my God, you're endangering the troops!  What's the matter with you?

ACKERMAN: Unpatriotic.

UYGUR: Unpatriotic, exactly right. Now E.J., isn't it a little unpatriotic here for the Republicans to turn so quickly against a president, less than a week into a war?  I mean, that sounds like they're going against the Commander-in-Chief.  Sarah Palin did it outside of the country, like the Dixie Chicks!  How could she?

E.J. DIONNE: You know, I never have ever liked it when somebody criticizes another American who opposes a policy for being unpatriotic.

I saw a car today

Submitted by Tugboat Phil on Thu, 03/24/2011 - 11:58pm.

It looked like most of the hippie Subarus around here. When I pulled close at the stop light I saw two bumper stickers. On the drivers side was "Peace is Patriotic." On the other side was "Obama 08."

I turned at the light and they didn't. If I'd had the time I'd have followed her just to say, "I agree with you. I don't think Obama is very patriotic either."

Submitted by mostlymoderate on Fri, 03/25/2011 - 12:42am.

I will be the first to admit that I wasn't completely satisfied with the way G.W. Bush did things. That being said, at least he never "bad-mouthed" something and then went on to do the exact same thing himself. Obama is the most hypocritical person ever to step foot in the White House. The man has absolutely no integrity.

Everything he campaigned on he has flip-flopped on. Everything he criticized Bush about he has done himself. This man makes me sick. Oh, and I am sorry for being so politically incorrect, but I don't need some jackass named "Cenk Uygur" telling me about patriotism, that''s just how I am minus the political correctness training.

Remember THIS...? (of course you do)

Submitted by Slyrr on Fri, 03/25/2011 - 8:21am.

"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and disagree with this administration that you are somehow un-American! Well I say I we are Americans and we have a right to debate and to disagree WITH ANY ADMINISTRATION!!!!!!!!"

Remember this? Hillary Clinton said it during the Bush years, with her voice rising to a shrill screech. It was easy to envision her flailing her arms wildly above her head like Kermit the Frog while hearing her speak these words.

'Dissent is patriotism.' This was one of the Left's oft-repeated mantras during the Bush years. Yet more evidence (as if any further evidence was needed) that the Left area pack of stinking hypocrites. When Bush was in power, dissent was patriotism and it was their god-given right to say that Bush stunk. Now their 'sort-of-god-standing-above-the-world' Obama is temporarily in charge. And suddenly, dissent is 'un-American' again....

Bravo, looney left. Bravo. How's that foot in your mouth tasting?

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Libya is Obama's War and he

Submitted by dscott on Fri, 03/25/2011 - 10:33am.

Libya is Obama's War and he entered that war without even attempting to build consensus here in the US. I just love the juicy hypocrisy of these guys charging we are out to pull the rug from under Obama, make him fail, and under the unity imperative of War, etc. This is ALL Projection on their part as this is exactly what they did to W.

Contrary to the usual false moral equivalence presented by liberals and Democrats, how Obama conducted himself in his little video game war it was NOTHING like how W went about entering into military action to engage in War in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our criticism is directed BEFORE he has ANY boots on the ground using the internet and Fox News (only because the rest of the MSM wouldn't cover it.) Whereas liberals and Democrats engaged in their criticism using their megaphone of the MSM AFTER boots got on the ground under W. Democrats supported and voted for both Wars before they were against them. Schadenfreud doesn't count as dissent much less patriotism.

The MSM and Democrats actively undermined an ongoing fully involved WAR EFFORT with TROOPS ON THE GROUND under W, whereas we are standing up now in opposition BEFORE any troops have set foot on foreign soil. Liberals simply don't get why Conservatives support a WAR effort, we do so because it is in the national interest with the full understanding that people are going to get killed and regrettably some of those people are non combatants. We also know that the US government has a track record of TRYING to minimize killing the wrong people, as such we conduct a WAR to win and to so decisively knowing that such actions minimize the total number who are killed, both combatants and non combatants. Obama's video game war does neither.
