Reich To Rich: Redistribute Or Risk Angry Populace Turning On You!

By Mark Finkelstein | March 01, 2011 | 21:42

A  A

Nice house there, rich guy.  Wouldn't wanna see nuthin' happen to it . . .

Robert Reich has actually argued that the rich should welcome redistributing more of their income to prevent an angry American populace from turning on them.

Clinton's former Labor Secretary made his astounding assertion on Cenk Uygur's MSNBC show this evening.   View video after the jump.

CENK UYGUR: Secretary Reich, this isn't just about let's get the money from the rich because that's where it is and they've accumulated all the wealth up at the top. It also makes sense for the rich if we had more equal distribution of income because of the effect it would have on the middle class.  Tell us about that, why do you think that's the case?  . . . Now if you go buying less cars, less homes, less everything, how are corporations and rich people supposed to make money?  I mean, it hurts everybody, doesn't it?

ROBERT REICH: Not only does it hurt everybody, but it also breeds a kind of anger. I mean, so many middle-class people, lower middle-class people, working-class people, are frustrated.  They are anxious, they worry about paying their bills. They see people at the very top getting away with, well, the equivalent of murder: look at what happened on Wall Street.  There's not a single Wall Streeter that's actually been indicted or brought to justice after that huge implosion on Wall Street. And people get cynical and they get angry.

And then they see, uh, Republicans are very good at channeling that anger toward what? Government, immigrants, public employees.  Well, an angry population and an angry populace could just as easily turn their anger toward the very rich. Again, it is in the interest of the people at the top to actually call for a more equitable distribution of the gains of economic growth and a better tax system: a tax system that is fair.

Note: apologies for the mediocre video quality, complete with my lovebird Tukki squawking his rejection of Reich's threats in the background.  Still working out some of the kinks in my system after my recent move to Texas, but expect to be providing consistently better quality soon.

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 03/01/2011 - 9:55pm.

Another liberal example of the new "civility."

Exactly how does Reich expect the populace to "turn on them?"

Is  he actually suggesting that middle- and working-class people might form mobs to attack and rob rich people?

Well, I guess that sort of extremism is what's expected on Cenk Uygur's program nowadays.

After all, Keith Olbermann's show left a pretty big cesspool to fill.

Thanks for putting up with this garbage, Mark.

I'd rather listen to Tukki any day.

Thanks, MB.  This was the most astounding argument I've heard yet for the redistribution of income.  It  amounts  to something of a protection racket.  And yes, Tukki's squawks do add a certain cinema verite verisimilitude to the matter, don't they? ;-)

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 12:04am.

He was talking about the revolution (muslims and socialists).  I would suggest watching today's show on youtube... it was very good.  Beck also had a short clip of a restaurant worker saying that his boss (the owner) should give up ownership so they can all be equal since (drum roll) it is currently a "dictatorship."   I kid you not.

i think you missinterpreted.....

Submitted by jakejohnson12 on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 1:30pm.

i think you miss interpreted the comment about anger. first of all, there is a lot of anger about wall street who crashed the economy and got away with tarp bailout money. this anger, however, does not translate into violence.

the tea party has been discribed by many, including their  leaders, as angry at the current system of politics. this does not mean that they formed violent mobs. this is what they are talking about, people showing their anger with peaceful protests.

the anger can, and some think it already has, been turning to the rich because of the percieved unfairness of the tax code. after all, why is it ok for a rich person to pay a much smaller percent of their taxes than a poor person? shouldnt everyone pay the same?

furthermore, how is it fair that 2/3 corporations pay 0% of their taxes, and often recieve public money in the form of subsidies???

have a great day! i hope to continue this conversation!

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 3:28pm.

jakejohnson12,

Hmmmm..

1) Wall Street didn't crash the economy! This is a liberal meme. Our economy was crashed by our government over spending! That is, spending more than is coming in as revenue!

It was also crashed by government over regulation and many other government actions an inactions.

To blame Wall Street is naive and a lie.

2) Tea Party is not angry with Wall stree, they are angry at the overspending of our government, Republicand and Democrat. They are tired of spend, spend, spend, spend, spend and then spend some more.

3) The demonstrations of the Union, of the Left ARE violent as we have seen in Wisconsin with threads of violence used, with shoving and pushing of Conservatives by Leftist and union members.

You even have a Liberal Congressional member of Wisconsin telling a Conservative that she is fuc...ing dead!

Please tell me where you have seen Tea Party members or Tea Party politicians act this way?

Furthermore, unions and Leftist are angry that their cushy government money, which comes from our taxes, will no longer flow to them if Conservative Republicans around the nation have their way.

Unions and Leftist want freebess, free money, better healthcare benefits, better retirement beneifts than the average American receives!!! All paid by who? TAX PAYERS!

Unions and Leftists are angry that they won't be able to mooch of the system anymore!

Unions and Leftist are angry that Republicans, Conservatives are attempting to bring the government spending under control, why? Because the unions and leftist love to suck off the tit of government from the Tax payers!

Please do not even start to compare the REAL peaceful Tea Party demonstrations to the crazed out, full of anger, full of crazy Leftists who have threatened violence AND used violence out of control rallies of Union cry babies and Leftists cry babies.

Submitted by Ashrak on Tue, 03/01/2011 - 10:09pm.

Understand this, Sir.

There exists this thing called the right to private property and there also exists this thing called the right defend one's hearth and home - so you would do well to rethink your position here. You see, where I come from, people exercise their rights without pretending the Second Amendment isn't one of them.

You, sir, are one step removed from calling for civil war and I submit that you need to apologize for your foolish comments before people get hurt as a result of your irresponsible behavior.

he is not calling for civil war, he is talking about populace anger turning against the rich the same way that tea party anger manifested itself against big government. you can peacefuly show anger.

furthermore, i think the populace has a right to be angry, especially when 2/3 of corporate amaerica pays 0 taxes. if that same 2/3 had not avoided taxes, then there would literally be no budget shortfalls in Wisc or many other states.

You are choosing the wrong boogeyman. Even if your numbers are accurate, you must ask the question: "WHY do 2/3 of coprorations pay 0 takes?"

The answer of cours is: The government allows them to!   You can't blame corporations for making profit. That's their job!

Your contention that corporation "avoided taxes" is at best naive.  They didn't 'avoid' anything they simply followed the law!

Jake,

Submitted by Ashrak on Thu, 03/03/2011 - 12:18am.

Just where do you find the enumerated power to tax property? Outside Communism that is? I don;t know what planet you live on, but government has to seek that power from voters in my neck of the woods. There is that pesky delegation thing.....

TEA party sees a demand for government to operate within Constitutional Boundaries. Pitting one group of people against another, especially based on their financial status, is nto within that arena. Care to demonstrate otherwise?  No? Didn't think so.

As I said down below, please name a corporation that "pays no taxes".

Understand this. Illinois once had no income tax at all. It was said that an income tax solved all the problems of the day. Guess what, Illinois government just raised income taxes on people by 66% and even raised taxes on businesses too.  How can this be? Establishing it didn't solve the problem. Raising every fee possible didn't solve it.  Why? Because spending is the problem.

As with so many others, you ignore the reality that SPENDING is the problem. No matter how much government takes, those operating it still spend more. Please see that.

Oh, and I live in Obamaland, where Democrats have total and complete control. So who is to blame here? Huh?

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Submitted by jdhawk on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 12:08am.

Reich is full of crap. The local, state, and federal government has been gaining in power in every way regardless of whether dimocrats or Republicans are in office in the executive and/or legislative branch. One of the chief ways that they have garnered this power is through taxation and in turn, redistritbution of income. It is plain to anyone that nearly 50% of workers pay no federal income tax and amongst this group 35% are actually getting money back! And, both these percentages are growing every year. Meanwhile, the top 1% of income earners pay 40% of federal income taxes. The top 25% of income earners pay nearly 90% of federal income tax. The fastest growing segment of our federal government is so-called non-discretionary which is made up of social security, medicare, medicaid, SCHIP, and interest on the national debt. This segment makes up over 62% of the entire budget and is growing in percentage terms every year. All of us at NB know the above and the crap that Reich attempts to spew. The tragedy is that young impressionable minds that attend a school like UC Berkerley don't know that he is a hard core socialist determined to garner even more power to an ever more centralized government all in the name of the "people." The shame is that CNBC's Kudlow has Reich on his show constantly and introduces him as the author of "Supercapitalism." This book is all about how to reorder society so that control resides with big government, big business, and big labor. In other words, take us back to the 1950's. At first blush, with a title like "Supercapitalism" you'd think it was in praise of the same. It is exactly the opposite.

Group A [socialists] get together with Group B [politicians] and decides what Group C [basically anyone who pays federal income tax] is going to do for Group D [whatever victim group teams A & B have a crush on.]

The Robert Reich

Submitted by NotFondOfLibs on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 3:02am.

If Robert Reich is so committed to re-distribution of income from the rich, why doesn't he set an example and write out a check to the United States Treasury then announce it long and loud to the rest of the country.  Instead he just blathers on about taking other people's money that they earned and giving it to people who didn't earn it.   This guy was a disgusting excuse for a public servant and he's a disgusting excuse for a citizen who believes non producers/low producers deserve a bigger piece of the pie that someone else made.

STW = Share the Wealth

Submitted by CO2Maker on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 8:29am.

That's what Candidate O'Bama said to Joe the Plumber. Or as Carlos Estevez would say, STFU.

How come the STW-ers are okay with a movie star making $15 million for a picture while the techies make $40k-$50k per year for setting the lights, manhandling the cables, and spreading the brie on the crackers? How come the STW-ers do not object to A-rod making a quarter of a billion dollars for a 10-year contract, while the mid- to low-level Yankee staffers would earn $300K in the same time span? What does Estevez do with his paltry $1.8 million an episode for One and a Half Men (and One Complete Asshole)? Besides investing in Big Pharma and hot babes?

I guess we can little punk dwarf to this list..Theres a lot of violent people out there we should be keeping our eyes on including Democrat Congressman Michael Capuano who wants to bloody anyone that don’t agree with him fits right in with a lot of Obama’s cohorts.  He should get right along with Obama’s Philly Black panthers that want to prevent whites from voting and kill little white cracker babies. They call tea partiers  racists but Obama and his ugly looking friend Andy Stern formerly of SEIU didn't care about Kenneth Gladney almost getting killed by some purple shirted SEIU thugs as they were calling him the N word. The fringe media didn’t report the beating here it is below no one has been prosecuted.

After the Assembly vote to approve Governor Scott Walker’s budget repair bill Democrat State Rep. Gordon Hintz turned to Republican Rep. Michelle Litjens and said: “You are F***king dead!”. Outside a demonstrator was attacking a Fox news reporter Mike Tobin.

Soldiers as you and your wife leave your last trace

Tea partiers I can’t hear you

You won’t have to see that venemous plastic face

she wants patriots like Gladney to disappear without a trace

she wants the purple shirts to call him the “N” word and bury him in place

Yes, this is ridiculous, but

Submitted by Free Thinker on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 9:50am.

Yes, this is ridiculous, but I also find this kind of rhetoric to be very chilling.  Basically you have rich elites calling on the poor to rise up against the very people that create economic activity and opportunities for everyone to improve their lives.  Who is Reich to preach to me that I have to work harder just to have more money taken from me?  I don't think Reich and this dude he is talking to understand economics and the consequences of taking even more from the productive and "redistributing" it.  Yes, the tax system needs to be reformed, but not at the top.  Everyone needs to pay their fair share, the rich already pay far more than their fair share.  The old class warfare tactic is tired and played out but we see there are a few on the left still clinging to it.

Getting old fast

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 10:10am.

This nonsense about "redistribution" is getting seriously old and tiresome to say the least.  Thatcher has it correct in saying socialism works as long as you don't run out of money, but correct me if I'm wrong, in this country, if someone takes something from you without permission, that's called THEFT.  To make it worse, you have these a$$holes out there trying to make it sound like a good thing and if there's one thing I hate in life, it's being involuntarily volunteered to do things which this is an example of.  Or as some people put it, being charitable with other people's money.

Hundreds of years ago, they attempted to live a communist lifestyle in this country during the earlier colonization and it was an unmitigated disaster of the first order.  People need to know this story in order to realize that trying to revert back to communism and socialism would only end in UTTER FAILURE.

This is one of those profound reasons why our education system is such a dismal thing with depressing results and yet these teachers in unions are making unreasonable demands in Wisconsin and other places.  If people knew and understood history of not only this country but others as well, we wouldn't have the problems we have today.

the government has a right to

Submitted by jakejohnson12 on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 1:52pm.

the government has a right to collect taxes. collecting taxes isnt communism. furthermore, the rich very often pay a much lower percent in taxes than poor people, and corporations often pay nothing.

furthermore, what we have now is not capitalism. it is corporate america strangling the economy, preventing competition, and buying our government. while i agree that communism does not work, i assert that this fasciest marriage of corporate america and politics will soon destroy our country too.

also, i do not blame obama for this situation because it has been occuring and growing for the last 60 years.

Ok, what fictional TV show are you watching all this from?  Sounds like a great escape from reality.

And you say this has been happening in the last 60 years, so what about how we have more spending in the last TWO years(which means your dear leader was in it and involved) than ALL the previous administrations combined?

The only real marriage of corporate america and politics as you described it is with GE.

I've got news for you, the poor aren't paying taxes.  If you look here http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Nearly-half-of-US-households-apf-110556732... you'll find

The result is a tax system that exempts almost half the country from paying for programs that benefit everyone, including national defense, public safety, infrastructure and education. It is a system in which the top 10 percent of earners -- households making an average of $366,400 in 2006 -- paid about 73 percent of the income taxes collected by the federal government.

The bottom 40 percent, on average, make a profit from the federal income tax, meaning they get more money in tax credits than they would otherwise owe in taxes. For those people, the government sends them a payment.

"We have 50 percent of people who are getting something for nothing," said Curtis Dubay, senior tax policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation.

Proud member of the 53%!

JakeJohnson12, The poor pay

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 03/02/2011 - 3:41pm.

JakeJohnson12,

The poor pay more taxes than the rich?!  do you honestly believe this?

The poor in America do not pay income tax!!! 50% bottom of working Americans do not pay income taxes!!! This is an easily searchable fact found in the IRS! The top income earners in America pay most taxes, they pick up the slack for the bottom 50% who do not pay a penny in income taxes!

Corporations in America are the highest taxed in the world! They pay an incredibly amount of taxes compared to corporations in other nations.

JakeJohnson12 when you buy a product, a service, gasoline, etc what percentage of the price that you pay is due to government taxes on corporations, government regulations, etc? Start with gasoline and then move on from there.

The rich pay less taxes than the poor?!! WOW!

Jake, it is obvious you are a Liberal that is very poorly informed and who has bought into the Left wing lies.

Jake,

Governments do not have rights. Governments have delegated authorities, duties and responsibilities.

People have rights.

You speak about percentages. You only do so because you cannot even come close to supporting your point in dollars. This is especially true regarding lower income folks with children. These folks not only do not pay taxes, they get them, by the THOUSANDS.

Name me one corporation that pays no taxes. And no the U.S. Government doesn't count. You cannot come with a name, because all corporations pay taxes, it is just a matter of to whome they pay them and how much. Take oil companies for instance, while they might not pay a particular tax to the United States, this is generally because they are paying them to other countries. Thisis not unlike paying taxes in one state, not your own, and then your tax liability in your own state beiung offset by that much.

Dude, your talking points are as trite as they are weak. As for absolving Obama, well, you show some true colors there.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

For something like that, you will get an indicator of how bad teachers have taught (or have not) history.  So naturally, any student out there with this "summer job" is either doing it for the money and willing to take part in it, or they are doing it out of sheer ignorance of our history of what the original Boston Tea Party was all about and how the current TEA party relates.

I think the little man with short mans syndrome should worry more about mobs gathering and attacking Marxists like him and Otraitor. We working people have been getting dumpoed on and insulted for 2 years now by these Marxists and our pockets are picked clean by them. A storm is brewing and it is not against the wealthy. But Reich has always been a moron.
