Egypt: Cenk Chides Obama For Not Being Like . . . Reagan!

By Mark Finkelstein | February 02, 2011 | 21:59

A  A

It was 16 degrees warmer in my upstate New York town this morning than it was in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  If any further portent of the apocalypse is necessary, consider that on his MSNBC show this evening, Cenk Uygur compared Barack Obama to Ronald Reagan . . . and clearly came down on the side of Ronaldus Maximus.

The subject was Egypt.  Uygur played the clip of Reagan's immortal "tear down this wall," and contrasted it with Obama's wan words on the need for "orderly transition" in Egypt.

View video after the jump.

Watch the video, be amused by Uygur's unmistakable upbraiding of Obama, and above all recall Reagan and remember what a real leader looked like.

CENK UYGUR: When Pres. Obama accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in November of 2009, he said it was premature, since it was at the beginning of his work as a leader. Well, now is his chance. Mr. President, this crisis in Egypt is your opportunity to earn your Nobel Peace Prize.  Barack Obama already had a sense of history when he was running for office. During his campaign, candidate Obama spoke looking towards the Brandenburg Gate, where JFK told Nikita Khrushchev we are all Berliners, and where Ronald Reagan famously challenged the Soviets.  [Cut to clip.]

RONALD REAGAN: Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.

UYGUR: Will Pres. Obama have his "Mr. Mubarak, tear down this regime" moment?  Last night he said this. [Cut to clip.]

BARACK OBAMA: Now, it is not the role of any other country to determine Egypt's leaders. Only the Egyptian people can do that.  What is clear, and what I indicated tonight to President Mubarak, is my belief that an orderly transition must be meaningful, it must be peaceful, and it must begin now.

UYGUR: Now, he's definitely pressuring Mubarak to leave. But does talk of "orderly transitions" reverberate throughout history? I'm not sure.

Ouch! Pres. Obama, you've been dissed.  One of your normally dependable cheerleaders has compared you with Ronald Reagan, and found you weak and wanting.

What I want to know is: who

Submitted by bkeyser on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 10:32pm.

What I want to know is: who is providing the keywords that generate a weeks worth of news reports about this president? This week its a comparison between Obama and Reagan; two presidents who's ideology couldn't be further apart and two presidents no one would connect for any particular reason.

And yet, someone makes a statement and the left/media run with it. Time does a cover. MSNBC has numerous stories. FoxNews. CNN. The networks. All giving lipservice to this particular odd-couple.

I fear originality on the left is reserved to a "think tank" somewhere. Probably CAP.

[edit] A google search for "reagan and obama" -in quotes- generated 32,900 results for the past week alone. And only about 47,000 for the last month.

But, but, but, 2 weeks ago President Reagan was senile.

Submitted by Red Jeep on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 12:02am.

Alzheimer's City. Doddering old fool.

"Oh, my, he’s gonzo, I thought. I have to go out on the lawn tonight and tell my countrymen that the president of the United States is a doddering space cadet. My heart began to hammer with the import…I was aware of the delicacy with which I would have to write my script. But I was quite sure of my diagnosis." Leslie Stahl writing about her 1986 meeting with Reagan.

Above from "Reagan’s Alzheimer’s, a Family Feud, and Lesley Stahl"  1-20-2011

This week Reagan's a genius, and the "Tear Down this Wall" speech was made in 1987.

I well remember

Submitted by Tugboat Phil on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 11:59pm.

Reagan making his demand on the Soviet Union.  If Cenk had been on TV back then, he would have derided and ridiculed Reagan as viciously as the rest.  It was only when the mediatrons saw the public display of love and sorrow at Reagan's passing that they realized his name would get them ratings.

Make no mistake, Reagan was hated by the media and "intelligencia" all during his Presidency.

President Obama is a Muslim (from his own lips), Kenyan (read it from his publicist) a homosexual (read it on a news magazine cover) and a Socialist (I'm alive and can see it for myself)

Try this

Submitted by miss911ninja on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 12:43am.

I know how BHO could make Cenk happy by delivering something that might "reverberate." BHO just needs to remember how he was reverberating all over the place when he was trying to sell Obamacare.

Try this on the Egyptians, Barry. Ask them: "ARE YOU FIRED UP AND READY TO GO FOR AN ORDERLY TRANSITION?"

Yeah! That's what I'm talkin' bout!

Don't Praise Cenk

Submitted by Boil It Down on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 3:14am.

Sure, Cenk, shockingly, got a bit of praise in for Reagan, but don't pat him on the back. Like any snarling little lap dog, he'll whip around and nip you with those sharp little teeth if he doesn't like the way he's stroked. I'm assuming he got a stern finger wagging and a "bad dog!" from his master.

Gosh, libs, your favorite

Submitted by johnsonl on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 7:59am.

Gosh, libs, your favorite professor can't really function in the real world? That's why he's a community activist, not a world leader. He doesn't have the stones or the creds. Either would suffice, in a pinch. Obamao needs to STFU. He's not helping.

The White House probably got

Submitted by Hunter12 on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 10:09am.

The White House probably got a study from somewhere that found they could pick up 10% of the nursing home vote by tying Obama to President Reagan.  "Reagan, I remember Reagan!  I liked Ronnie."  Obviously, being new to the job, Cenk hasn't had time yet to go through that stack of memos on his new desk.
