Sharpton For Censoring Rush: 'Imagine The Arrogance Of Allowing People To Say What They Want!'

By Mark Finkelstein | December 22, 2010 | 19:46

Change font size:  A |  A

Welcome to Al Sharpton's Brave New Radio World. A world in which the FCC would take a hard look at the licenses of stations that carry Rush Limbaugh. Al is outraged at the prospect that the FCC would "allow people to say what they want."

Ed Schultz has, as I've noted, been offering Sharpton a serial stage to trumpet his censoring threats, and there was Al at it again tonight.  According to the Reverend, the FCC should clamp down not merely on "explicit" racism, sexism or homophobia, but also on any of those isms or phobias in their "implicit" forms.  Got that?  Against the repeal of DADT?  Implicit homophobia!  Off with your license!

View video after the jump.

Watch Al, with Schultz's tacit approval, send a very chilling threat to those who would exercise their First Amendment freedoms in a manner unfriendly to the current administration or its friends.

ED SCHULTZ: Rev. Al Sharpton is fed up with Rush Limbaugh's blatant on-air racist remarks over the years.  Last week he met with the FCC and asked them to take action, take a stand on Limbaugh.  There will be public meetings.

. . .

AL SHARPTON: Well, first of all, we're not talking about censorship.  We're talking about standards. [R-i-i-i-g-h-t.] And there are already standards in place.  We're saying those standards ought to include those that in an explicit or even an implicit way practice racism or sexism or homophobia on the airwaves. And can you imagine the arrogance of saying federally-regulated airwaves should not be subjected to federal public hearings, so they should just grant licenses, allow people to say what they want?

Imagine the arrogance of allowing Rev's Wright, Pfleger, Jackson, and Fat Albert to say what they want; replete with anti-semitic, racist rhetoric.  Someone needs to do something...for the children!

Rev. Al's Rap Sheet

Submitted by Red Jeep on Wed, 12/22/2010 - 8:36pm.

"TAX EVASION: In a 1988 interview, Sharpton said he saw no reason why blacks should pay taxes. “If we do not have a justice system that protects us, what are we paying for?”"

1987 Twana Brawly hoax

1989 "CENTRAL PARK JOGGER: In 1989 “the jogger,” a young white woman, was monstrously raped and nearly beaten to death in Central Park. Sharpton insisted—despite the defendants’ confessions—that her black attackers were innocent, modern-day Scottsboro Boys trapped in “a fit of racial hysteria.” Sharpton charged that the jogger’s boyfriend did it, and organized protests outside the courthouse, chanting, “The boyfriend did it!” and denouncing the victim as “Whore!” (bold mine)

1991 Crown Heights riots. One Jewish student stabbed to death. “If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house.”

1995 Freddy's Fashion Mart Fire.

Million Man March Sharpton declared, “O.J. is home, but Mumia Abu Jamal ain’t home. And we won’t stop till all of our people that need a chance in an awkward and unbalanced criminal justice system can come home.”

2002 19 year old surveillance tapes of an FBI sting involving Sharpton and a cocaine deal are made public. Sharpton made the claim that this tape was made public because he was going to run for president in 2004.

2003. Sharpton raising money for his presidential run. "The FBI secretly videotaped Sharpton on May 9, 2003, pocketing campaign donations from two “shady fund-raisers” in a NY City hotel room, and then demanding $25,000 more."

Why anyone gives this man any credibility is a mystery to me.

God, I hate to complain, but I have to point out some basics.

Submitted by acaiguana on Wed, 12/22/2010 - 9:10pm.

Their is not there.

Their is not they are.

Your is not You are.  You're is correct.

That is not which.

Which is not that.

If we are going to make a bunch of mistakes - let's make them typos or inane, for example, I use dunno, I don't see none and such language frequently, as sarcasim mostly and I make my share of grammatical and typo errors and even misuse a word once in a while - but lately I've been struck by how sloppy my blog buddies (NB is not the only one) have become with basic thingys.

Note the use of thingy which is a perfectly decent late 1990's slang term used by adolescent girls to their dads as in:  "I can't find my thingy, have you seen it?"

I like the use of Youse Guys occasionally.  Even the well turned phrase of  "I ain't got none."

Just a quick note from the grammer Nazi member of the club.

Never mind holding a job, first as a person with no marketable skills Al would have to find a minimum wage job.  I bet the moron now regrets supporting the increase in the minimum wage which killed off millions of entry level jobs.  Wait, never mind, Al would first have to have the mental capacity to grasp the concept of the zero sum paradigm, where increasing wages significantly for the few means less money available to employ others.

Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 12/23/2010 - 12:44pm.

"And can you imagine the arrogance of saying federally-regulated airwaves should not be subjected to federal public hearings, so they should just grant licenses, allow people to say what they want?"

Al, you're such an idiot!  The FCC doesn't grant licenses for what people say. They grant licenses for which FREQUENCIES they can broadcast over! What you're suggesting is the direct control over what is being said, not how's it's being heard by the general public! That is a DIRECT violation of the First Amendment!

Hay, Al, if you don't like what's being said over "public airwaves," then I suggest you exercise your "public" right to not listen and change the channel!

You can complain as loudly and as often as you like about what other people say, and I will fully support your right to do so, but don't you DARE tell me that it takes a "federal  public hearing" to decide what I can hear and what others can say! THAT'S call totalitarianism and I will not abide by it.
