Scarborough: Off Record, 'All' Republican Leaders, Talk Radio Hosts, Agree With My Palin Criticism

By Mark Finkelstein | November 30, 2010 | 08:38

Change font size:  A |  A

Joe Scarborough leveling harsh criticism at Sarah Palin: not news.

Joe Scarborough claiming that—off the record—"all" conservative leaders and talk radio hosts with whom he's spoken agree with his criticism: news.

Scarborough made his astonishing claim on today's Morning Joe in the context of commenting on his latest anti-Palin piece in today's Politico. This is far from the first time that Joe has taken shots at Palin.  As I've reported, he has blamed the former Alaska governor for the GOP's failure to win the Senate, and claimed that Palin knows she can't win the presidency but is in it for the money.

Today's Politico piece takes Scarborough’s swipes a quantum leap further [see examples after jump].  But what makes this morning’s diatribe truly remarkable is Joe's repeated claim that "all" Republican leaders and conservative talk radio hosts with whom he's spoken have—off the record—agreed with his criticism of Palin.

Watch Joe's unequivocal assertion—vouched for by Mika Brzezinski—that every Republican leader or talk radio host with whom he's spoken shares his criticism of Palin: but is afraid to say so on the air.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: We're going to start with Joe's [item] out of Politico.  And this is a fairly blistering piece about Sarah Palin.  I'm going to read a little bit from it and then --

JOE SCARBOROUGH: A humdinger.

BRZEZINSKI: Well, the bottom line is, you know, we talk off-set with a lot of major Republican figures, and they say all this.  They refuse to say it on the record.

SCARBOROUGH: They will not say it on camera, but they all say it, all say it, all say it off set.

BRZEZINSKI: All of them.

SCARBOROUGH: All of them say it off-set. All of your talk radio hosts that will defend Sarah Palin for three hours every day, all off-set quietly say this.  All of your leading conservative figures, all, when off the record, will say all of this about Sarah Palin. But, they want ratings, they want book sales, so they don't want to upset the 18% of Americans who like Sarah Palin.

From Scarborough's Politico piece:

  • Palin's resume "makes the political biography of Barack Obama look more like Winston Churchill’s."
  • Palin's presidential ambitions are a "dopey dream."
  • Palin "does know how to make millions of dollars, even if she embarrasses herself while doing it."
  • Palin's activities amount to a "gaudy circus sideshow."
  • Scarborough calls on Republican leaders to "man up," saying "it’s time that Republican leaders started standing up and speaking the truth to Palin."

Why would they like her?  She comes off like a complete hick and frankly is.  I know peeps in here like her cause she riles the heck out of libs, but have you listened to her speak about issues?  One talking point after another, in that goofy accent.  No imagination in this person.   Can't articulate a message.  Frankly, I hope the heck she stays in Alaska also.

The last thing I want to see in the White House is that red neck family of hers...  Joe maybe a RINO, but I would never call him a liar.

Romney.......

Submitted by dirtydan64 on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 9:46am.

you can't be serious ??? he's our next worst nightmare !!!! why the he'll should he be deserving of a 2nd or 3rd chance to run for POTUS...... I know cause it's the old establishment mentality that the old rank & file are deserving regardless of there record good, bad or indifferent, LMAO !!!!! Everyone inside &outside the DC beltway are scared to death of Palin, look at her record for all the candidates she supported or backed finically thru fund raiser's where I think she ended up with something like a 75%-80% win record and she's not afraid to stick her neck out as opposed to most currently in Congress who can't make a prediction on the weather in fear of retribution by there fellow members of Congress !!!!! The fact's remain the same, there all so freaking jealous of her success it's not even funny anymore, especially the women's rights advocates and women within the Democratic rank& file are jealous of her for being able to hold a job, raise a family and be successful in her own state as Governor, as head of her PTO in Wasilla, Ak and now having a TV reality show, writing a book and being asked to.give her Political opinions where most of the time she disagree's with the establishment on both sides of the isle !!!!! One of my favorite saying's, and it very much is deserving and fitting for this comment as well as this discussion in general and it goes like this ......... "Jealousy Will Get You No Where" How it applies Ehhhhhh !!!

A Mittwit

Submitted by BW222 on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 11:09am.

That makes sense. Mitt lacks the courage to attack Palin so he does it through surrogates.

In fact, Mittens doesn't have the courage to speak out on much of anything (unless he has time to take a poll to determine what the voters want to hear him say that day).

The next President must be a man or woman of courage. It may or may not be Palin, but it certainly isn't Romney.

Yeah Rubber, why would we want someone in the White House who understands more than 70% of the country and has real values?  By all means lets pick another career politician or academic who has never held a real job or even has connections with the rest fo the country?  This is sarcasm of course in case you missed it.

Submitted by Cactus Kurt on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 10:06am.

It's folks like rubberbrain that define the Democratic party... the "party of tolerance".  The fact that Sarah Palin is a "hick" with a "goofy accent" is what makes her appealing to "redneck America".  Most Americans don't relate to our Harvard law professor/community organizer President and his out-of-touch Supreme Court elitist snob nominees (that have never ventured outside New York City).  America is longing for a working-class "redneck" with common sense to run the country.  Someone who has actually run a business.

Joe's Not a Liar?

Submitted by BW222 on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 11:03am.

Joe Scarborough's political philosophy is whatever puts money in his pocket. He ran for Congress as a conservative because that was what would get him elected in the Florida panhandle.

A dead young female staffer is found in one of his offices and he suddenly resigns from Congress to avoid questions.

Now he's posing as the "house conservative" for a liberal propaganda channel, which is a good paying gig. Joe knows exactly how long his leash is and what he must do to please his liberal masters. Scarborough is a fraud with a capital "F."

Joe wouldn't lie? Scarborough would sell his mother's soul to the devil and not lose a moment's sleep. Wake up and smell the coffee.

like a chameleon, Scarborough can look like a Republican or a Democrat, a conservative or a liberal or none of the above.  He will do and say whatever is necessary to stay in the good graces of his bosses at MESSNBC. As you indicated, "whatever puts money in his pocket" is his number one goal and is ingrained in his inferior size character.

From calling conservatives just plain stupid, to airing a segment on his show titled "IS BUSH AN ‘IDIOT’?, Scarborough's lack of  honesty, integrity and trust are on display everyday at MESSNBC.

Oh spare me your complaints

Submitted by Van Halen on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 11:07am.

Oh spare me your complaints about her accent and her talking points. Let's admit it, you're either a Liberal troll or a GOP hack. Scarborough is about as Right wing as you are. Want to know why Palin is white hot? Because:

1) She supports God, guns, American oil, strong defense, no illegal immigration, less government, less taxes, less abortion.

2) She backs up what she says by endorsing Conservative candidates - mostly with the same principles.

3) She COMES THROUGH, bringing in huge amounts of money and votes, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for the GOP establishment or that ass Scarborough - when has Morning Joe, the (gag!) 'Conservative host' ever brought support or a win for our side?

4) She lists Democrats to send home and GETS THEM SENT HOME.

5) And she's a general pain in the ass to the Left, which is worth it's weight in gold.

Palin is doing what the rest of you so-called Republicans said you'd do but then jumped right into bed with the Left as soon as the opportunity allowed.

That's all these clowns are trying to do and it's going to be there top talking points between now and When, if Palin does decide to run. As for Scarborough, he's nothing more than a has been and the world can only hope that when Comcast takes full reins of MSNBC and starts to clean house he'll be cleaning out his desk and following O'Donnell, Special Ed, Mathews & Maddow out the back door when the time comes to fruition and or reality however you wish to perceive this event happening !!!

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 9:28am.

If (!) what he says is true, Palin has reached Rush Limbaugh status in "all republicans' and conservatives'" minds!!!!

That makes her the de facto leader (or co-leader, depending on Rush's mood) of the Republican Party.

Joe's sorry attempt at knocking Palin to boost his own standing (as if!) does nothing but further increase prestige.  It really is rather funny if you think about it....compare and contrast the number of "Palin's Alaska" viewers with "Morning Joe" and please tell me with a straight face it's not the green eyed monster talking.

I see this as one very sorry defense of the old guard republicans...but I'll save it for another post once the transcript is up.  Also, if you could, post the transcript (on Fox) of the interview he's talking about in re: Palin "mocking Reagan"...in fact, she was mocking the media's depiction of him....so he's totally twisted what she actually said about Reagan180 degrees!

<Edit>  When I google Palin / Reagan / Fox ....  I get a bunch of Salon and Huffpo pieces!!!!  No bias there.

BTW, all you need to know about Joe and his Conservative cred is that up until election day he thought Charlie Crist was the perfect candidate and Joe and his gang didn't even mention the other guy most of the time, as if their ignoring Marco Rubio's existence would doom his candidacy.

Another liberal incredibly jealous of Sarah Palin. How would you know what she is saying in her speeches. You have to know what the issues are. And you have to have a brain to understand the issues. It amazes me how idiot liberals just want to torture themselves attacking everyone else in the country all day. It just drives you crazy seeing someone who is way smarter than your god Barack the one, doesn't it. If you want to listen to someone who doesn't understand the issues you need to have someone read and try to explain what Obama says in one of his speeches. Your only problem with that is there is no one that has the slightest idea what he is saying including himself.

Joe's green eyed monster

Submitted by Marsh on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 12:06pm.

This morning Pat Buchanan exposed  Joe's  truth twisting about Palin. She never insulted Ronald Regan by saying he was a stupid third rate actor. She was reminding everyone how the press dismissed him as a stupid third rate actor. And Buchanan correctly surmised that she did not offhandedly insult the Bushes as blue bloods but was  responsing to Barbara Bush's passive aggressive snide remark that Palin should stay in Alaska.

What really irks Joe is that Palin has accomplished everything that Joe set out to do but failed at. She left halfway through her elected term of office,as Joe did, to become a best selling author ( while Joe's political tome currently sits at #62,480 on Amazon ). She has become a major political force in her party ( which Joe aspired to but once again: failure. Has any Republican candidate for office ever ask Joe to endorse them?). She has a successful highly rated television show (as Joe sits on his sad little morning show).

He claims Palin left office to make money. Well look in the mirror Joe. The only difference is that she is making money while all of your endeavors are money losers. Just ask your former radio syndicate and your publisher.

Never Seen Anything Like This

Submitted by Redrowan2000 on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 10:36am.

In all my years I have never seen a public figure attacked this relentlessly by opponents and the media.  There is not a day that goes by that she is not bashed but viciously bashed by the MSNB'cs, the CBS's ,NBC not to mention newspapers and left leaning websites and let's not forget the Hollywood elite.  She must be scarin the crap out of someone.   Joe's comment came because some RINO would not state definitively whether Palin was qualified to be president.  Hope he goes down next time too.  Guess what when she was mayor of Wasilla she already had more executive and administrative cred than what we have now.  If She runs I would consider her a credible contender.  She has stirred the nation and now needs a platform on which to run.

Tell me do you enjoy the cadence which BO uses to speak.  Kind of like Rev. Wright, don't you think (or do you)?

And regarding experience,  Palin was governor of Alaska, and a mayor.  What creds did BO come into office with?  Voting present?  I bet even you could accomplish that.  Or perhaps it was his stellar grades (oh I forgot HIS academic records are locked - must be really impressive for that).

During a power failure and without his teleprompters the TOTUS is a moron as can be heard when he does attempt to speak without them.  uuuuh,  uhhhh,  uhhhh,.   Yup that sounds much better.  An airhead running the country going ummmmm.

This Really Is A Pro-Palin Crowd

Submitted by FAR52 on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 11:20am.

What I look for in a President is someone who is highly intellegent (both inherently and through life experiences) and is a natural leader.  He/She also needs to be a republican.  I'm sorry, but I have never thought that Palin fit the bill.  Certainly even her most ardent supporters see that her speeches and interviews are nothing more than talking points.  When I listen to Palin, I do not sense a natural intellectual curiousity one would expect in an effective leader.  She can give a good speech, but so can our current President.  It takes more in my humble opinion.  I don't know who the best candidate is these days, but Mitch Daniels said something that I admire.  He said that we should take a break from the social issues and focus on the fiscal issues facing our country.  I couldn't agree more.  While I am whole heartedly pro-life, I don't believe the greatest threat facing our country is abortion.  It is our deficit and debt.  And if we get a nominee that understands this, and focuses on this, then it is possible that the grown ups, from both sides of the aisle, will come together and dramatically reform our entitlement programs.  Because that is the only way to secure our financial well being.  Wishful thinking?  Perhaps.  But focusing on social issues has gotten us nowhere.

Really?

Submitted by txradioguy on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 11:43am.

"But focusing on social issues has gotten us nowhere."

What do you think has led to the majority of our fiscal problems in this coutry?  It's been the Liberal focus on shoving "social justice" and every other social-ism down out throats and taking our tax dollars to fund their ponzi schemes.

Social issues ARE entitlement programs to the Liberals.  They go hand in glove.  It's what skyrockets our deficit...robs hard working people of more and more of their tax dollars every year and makes lazy Government teat sucking dependents out of generations of people in this country.

If you are serious about fiscal reform then you'd be an abject moron to ignore the "social issues" that are at the heart of fiscal reform

And it's what Rockerfeller Republicans like yourself can't seem to grasp.

Instead of trying to help and recognizing what the PEOPLE who elected a politican are telling them to do when they get to D.C. they take the usual tin ear approach and go about their merry way.

For all of your talking points in your post...you could have saved a lot of space and a lot of typing and just told the people that support Palin or any other TEA Party candidate for that matter...that they are a bunch of ignorant fear mongering idiots like the RINO's cousin the Liberal Democrat does on a daily basis.

Then perhaps you should read the stuff Sarah Palin writes on her Facebook page. Stuff about overspending and why we need a stable US Dollar. For that matter, you seem unaware of what she did as AK governor, vetoing 13% of the capital budget her 1st year. She is fantastic on budget/money issues if you bother to look at her record.

Who cares what these two crack heads Mika & Joe think or say on their joke of a show every morning.

Despite of how some people feel about Sarah Palin it should not be news right now. There are more important present matters these two hacks can discuss on their show, but it probably requires for them to use the brain cells they normally don't use in the morning.

Then again, maybe Joe has the hots for Sarah (secretly) and Mika probably wishes she looked like Sarah...

Yes, Really!

Submitted by FAR52 on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 12:25pm.

The social issues Governor Daniels referred to were topics like abortion, gay marriage, stem cell research, etc.  I agree with him that these topics, while important, pale in comparison to the challenges we face in getting our fiscal house in order.

As for Palin, I like her personally and I think she has done a load of good by helping give the Tea Party movement a national voice.  And I don't doubt her sincerity in wanting to limit the size of government.  I'm sure you do too, but that doesn't mean you have the credentials to sit in the most powerful chair in the world.  I think she says a lot of things that people tell her to say.  I think the same thing of Obama.  We need a heavy weight going into the 2012 election.  She's not the one in my opinion.  I wish I knew who the one was, but I don't think he/she has emerged yet.

Submitted by doug1950 on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 1:00pm.

These two haven't accomplished half of what Sarah Palin has between the two of them. Joe is a failure at every job he has ever had. He doesn't stick to anything for long because eventually it is discovered he doesn;t know what he is doing or talking about. This gig is perfect for him because that is not one of the job requirements. They put Mika on there for one reason..to be his cheerleader and to fill in his sentences when he gets a salient thought. You will get more interesting and accurate political discussion at any McDonalds in the mornings where retired adults gather for a cup of coffee.

Every effort at success that Joe has attempted ran along for while then either ran out of gas or money because no one wants to hear him talk. He was a failure as a lawyer, a Congressman, a newspaper publisher, as a writer and now as a "news" talking head. Still no one wants to hear what he says. JOE, saved some of the money, you are gonna need it~!

Ted Vs Palin

Submitted by Agnostic on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 8:54pm.

Ted,

I think the same thing of the defense of Palin that I do of the defense of President Bush.  If the media and other members of the left were not so constantly attacking her then you would see the criticism of faults that you do not get now.  The right is always put in a position of defense because of the steady stream of attacks from the left warranted and unwarranted that there is only time for defense.   No one defended Bush on spending but you rarely heard the complaint because those on the right that would have called him on it were too busy countering poorly supported attacks about WMD, FISA, Patriot Act, GETMO, Abu Garib, New Orleans, Blood for Oil, etc....

But see, Palin is...special.

She's a politician without an official job.  She can say whatever she wants about whomever she wants, and doesn't have to answer for herself.  She campaigns and attacks the left and the president, but only speaks with right wing media who are her primary supporters.

In other words, she's got a free pass from the right, so it's up to the left to question her.

She may get a pass from the right but not from the Republican Party.  Also, when you and your family are being "questioned"/attacked by ABC,CBS,NBC,MSNBC, NYT, LAT, Chi Trib, Wash Post,NPR and PBS it is safe to say that you need an extraordinary amount of defense.

The point is that she gets a pass from the right because of the amount of "questioning" she gets from the left.  If you could stick her in a media vacuum many more from the right would question her just like they would have Bush given the opportunity.

Which criticism do you think would have more effect on a politician, criticism from their political opponents or from their base?

Submitted by Guttermouth's Return on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 9:16pm.

And how does that make for a good president?  One side refuses to question her, while the other side can't get any answers.

See, most politicians seeking office are normally employed, whether it be a congressional seat, governorship, etc.  Palin is not.  She doesn't have to answer to anyone.  And because of this she has complete freedom to say what she wants, and rarely has to answer to critics.

So then the excuse is that the media attack her so often.  Well, she's putting herself out there at any and every occasion possible.  Always to attack the left, never to answer to them.  This game isn't going to end.  She can't run a national campaign while hiding under the umbrella protection of right wing media.  You can still disagree about the Couric interview, but it didn't go well.  And that's the impression many American's are left with.
