Schultz: NPR 'As Down The Middle As You Can Get'

By Mark Finkelstein | October 22, 2010 | 20:38

A  A

Hey, it's Friday night.  Time to kick back, relax, and have a few chuckles, courtesy Ed Schultz.  On his MSNBC show this evening, Schultz, somehow managing to keep a straight face, claimed that NPR is "as down the middle as you can get."

Schultz served up his side-splitter in condemning Jim DeMint and other Republicans for proposing the federal defunding of NPR.  In the world according to Ed, the Republican suggestion to withdraw NPR's taxpayer subsidies reflects a GOP plan to "shut down any dissenting voices in this country."  Ed, buddy: Dems control the White House and both houses of Congress.  NPR is the voice of pro-government flackery, not dissent.  The rebels are . . . the Republicans!

Check out Schultz at his reality-denying worst.

ED SCHULTZ: DeMint is going to introduce legislation to strip all of NPR's public funding--that's 7% of where they get their money from [NB: give Ed credit for at least getting that number right--in contrast with Norah O'Donnell who grossly understated it].  Cantor says that defunding NPR will be part of the Republicans You-Cut program. This isn't about Juan Williams, folks. This isn't about Williams at all. It's about an opportunity for the right wing to shut down NPR and any dissenting voices in this country. Juan Williams, he's just a tool and an opportunity in this. You see, the Tan Man [John Boehner] put it like this, he said " . . . I think it's reasonable to ask why Congress is spending taxpayers' money to support a left-wing radio network.  And in the wake of Juan Williams' firing, it's clearer than ever that's what NPR is." What?? Folks: NPR is about as down the middle as you can get it. They've said don't go to this rally that Stewart and this other dude, Colbert, are having, right.  I mean, they don't want their correspondents there.

So the only evidence Schultz supplies in support of his assertion that NPR is "as down the middle as you can get" is that the network found it necessary to warn its employees not to attend the Stewart/Colbert rallies.  Ed: why do you think NPR didn't need to send out a similar directive telling its people not to attend Glenn Beck's rally?

Serious question: has Schultz no regard for his own reputation or credibility? It might be one thing to argue that NPR provides some interesting reporting.  But that it is a paragon of objectivity? I honestly don't think even Olbermann would make such a surreal suggestion.

The "objective perspective"

Submitted by neutron on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 10:45pm.

It is hard for humans to be objective, because we are trapped inside our own experience. We tend to attribute our emotions to others, assuming they are like us.

Psychology and philosophy label folks who can't dispace themselves from their own experience enough to perceive and understand others as "immature minds." Eddie and Keithy are two such immature minds. Perhaps the center of their skulls have not closed, even in middle-age?

The only way Eddie, Keithy, et al, are "middle" is in their minds. Their cognitive dissonance is so inharmonious to have isolated them from actual humans, and their only interaction is through TV and computer monitors through which they associate with their antisocial counterparts.

If you start to believe your own press, you are self-deluded. If you believe that you are the center of human experience, without huge polls or audience numbers to back up your claim, you are delusional. If you believe that you are the center of the universe, and everyone is waiting on you for your pleasure and for your prognostications, then you are Eddie, Keithy or one of the other MSNBC hosts.

Why do we even bother to notice or give blogspace to these idiots with less than 1% of America watching them? They are less relevant than "Swamp People" or "Unexplained Mysteries" on some other cable channel.

It's ridicule time!

Submitted by neutron on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 10:57pm.

As Alinsky would recommend, it is time to isolate Eddie, Keithy, Rachel, et al, by mocking them wih laughter and ridicule.

The only thing smaller than Eddie's audience is his manhood. The only thing smaller than Ketihy's ratings is the esteem that others hold him in. The only things smarter than Rachey is every two or more celled being, including carrots and turnips.

We laugh above their heads, because they don't get the joke that they are.

I'd tape a "Kick Me" sign to their backs, but nobody is near enough to them to read it and respond.

I's say they are lower than pond scum, but I don't want to hurt the pond scum's feelings, lest they refuse to debate Eddie, Keithy, and/or Rachey on their shows.

I've changed my mind about NPR and PBS

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 9:32pm.

On purely a Constitutional basis, I've always been against the federal government paying for the production of "public" broadcasting.  But maybe it's time to just throw it back in their faces.  Next time dems are out of power, defund PBS and NPR and have FOX News start up a new "Public Purpose" broadcasting network that plays it "right down the middle" and have it funded entirely by taxpayer dollars.

Strictly expose' stuff, outing communists and George Soros and global warming and all that nonsense.  I'd even buy one of their tote bags from a fundraiser.

When David Brooks said the same thing on Jim Leher's show (people say this as an expresion all the time but), my jaw literally fell open.  And for goodness sake, it is certainly not censorship to take away their public money, let them spend their own money. Nobody said they could not express their opinion.

A caller on Schultz's radio show today defended NPR's federal subsidy by saying, without specifics, that it was only a small portion of NPR's overall funding. Great -- then eliminating it shouldn't be disruptive.

Well, in this continuing era of 're-defining' whatever needs to be re-defined (or re-invented or re-written) by the libs and the MSM - to fit their desired outcome - 'straight down the middle' fits in just as well as the new 'smart' and the new 'fair' and the new anything else. If you lined up 0 through 10 on the table - left to right - then 'straight down the middle' would be between the 2 and the 3 - on a 'fair' day.................

But it's tax money.  Which means part of it mine and I don't want to fund this left wing spin zone with any of that money. -hbnolikeee Have to be careful about that complaint.  Lots of people's tax money is used to support lots of things those people don't support.  No individual can control what his/her own tax money is spent on. The bigger issue is: whey does the government need to subsidize any radio station?  The market is certainly big enough for NPR to get sponsors. Even PBS has sponsors (This program is made possible by a grant from....) We are long past the days when government needed to fund a radio or TV entity because some people might not have access to information otherwise. This government funding is just a once-good principle that has now become a habit.  They don't need the money.  Let them find their own.  Or fail.

Not suprisingly, the NPR Ombudsman agrees with Schultz.

Submitted by Rush Fan on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 2:18am.

Alicia C. Shepard, the NPR Ombudsman, in an article whose title NPR's Firing of Juan Williams Was Poorly Handled doesn't reflect what she has written in defending the Williams firing, wrote:

Ultimately, however, it seems management felt he had become more of a liability than an asset. Unfortunately, I agree [...]

It's not about race. It's also not about free speech, as some have charged. Nor is it about an alleged attempt by NPR to stifle conservative views. NPR offers a broad range of viewpoints on its radio shows and web site.

Instead, this latest incident with Williams centers around a collision of values: NPR's values emphasizing fact-based, objective journalism versus the tendency in some parts of the news media, notably Fox News, to promote only one side of the ideological spectrum.

Shepard goes on to cite the NPR Ethics Code that Juan Williams evidently failed to follow by not being "thoughtful and measured,"

Just another fair and balanced opinion from a dishonorable lefty NPR Ombudsman.

Shultz needs to take another, close look at what NPR just did when they fired Juan: "shut down a dissenting voice on their network".

What's the difference, Ed? If one is ok (NPR firing Juan), then why is the other (defunding NPR) not ok?

Because, TnT, in the case of NPR being defunded, it would be his ox getting gored, and that just isn't fair.

Besides, if NPR gets only 7% of its funding from taxes, how would withholding that 7% shut them down?  They would still have 93% of their funding.  Of course, with Williams' firing, their contributions from individuals (and maybe some corporations and trusts) may just dry up.  NPR could end up going the way of Air America.
