Whoopi Decries Decline Of Civility--But Told Mosque Protesters 'Kiss My Butt'

By Mark Finkelstein | October 12, 2010 | 08:56

A  A

When I think of people well-suited to lead a crusade against declining public civility, somehow Whoopi Goldberg doesn't spring to mind.  Yet there was The View co-host on Morning Joe today, promoting what Amazon describes as: "her new book of observations [that] takes a funny and excruciatingly honest look at how a loss of civility is messing with the quality of life for all of us."

And sure enough, Whoopi engaged in a [seemingly endless] discussion with the MJ folks on the subject.  Mika read a passage from the book in which Goldberg bemoaned the rise of "political incivility."  Added Whoopi "it's not just the politicians. It's also just human beings interacting."

You mean, human beings like . . . Whoopi Goldberg?  Just last month, while the debate over the Ground Zero mosque was raging, our Lachlan Markay caught Whoopi in a blatant breach of civility.

Said Whoopi, of the Ground Zero mosque protesters: "kiss my butt, get out of here."

As a number of our readers have pointed out, speaking at a Kerry-Edwards fundraiser during the 2004 campaign, Goldberg engaged in a yet worse breach of civility, making crude "bush" double-entendre references at George W.'s expense.

Doctor of civility, heal thyself!

PS: How did Whoopi figure that her book's goal of elevating the cultural tone would be promoted by the cover she chose for it, which shows her sitting on a porcelain throne?

How it should be read

"her new book of observations [that] takes a funny and excruciatingly honest look at how a loss of civility is messing with the quality of life for all of us."

About the only correct part in this statement is "excruciatingly."  Funny and honest doesn't apply.  So it should read "her new book of observations [that] takes an excruciating look at how a loss of civility is messing with the quality of life for all of us."

I'm so sick of her I can't even watch the episodes of TNG with her in it.

Whoppi made excellent points

Submitted by vaboxrboy on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 9:09am.

The majority of her complaints were about things such as families texting when in restaurants or folks wearing too much cologne. It had nothing to do with politics. And even her comment about the mosque protestors, although not the best choice of words, was relevant. She didn't mind folks protesting, but to do it on 9/11 this year when family and friends were having somber rememberances was, yes, uncivil.  She also touched on the book cover relating how people were miffed when she refused autographs while using the restroom. I personally have no issue with what she said this morning as I see it even in my own family and it drives me nuts.

Cheers, Chuck

In other words, she disapproves of others' behavior

Submitted by Galvanic on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 9:15am.

There are certainly enough behaviors that irritate each of us that we could all write books about them.  So, what's her point?  Is this just another celebrity sellng a book?

Regarding civility, maybe she could start with her own show, and co-hostess Joy Behar.

Uhhhh, nice try,

Submitted by mattm on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 9:45am.

Uhhhh, nice try, but:

  1. She doesn't deserve credit for stating the obvious.
  2. 'Choice of words' is part of civility, so in defending her, you're admitting that criticism is warranted.
  3. 9/11 is the perfect day to protest the jihadist victory shrine - that's the point!   The uncivil thing is to support it- which Goldberg does.

Whoopi Goldberg talking about civility is quite the pot-meet-kettle moment.  If you can't see that, then, sad to say, there's not much that can be done for you.

Civility?

Submitted by ML Stovall on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 9:27am.

Ha! The only thing that Ms. Goldberg really laments is the decline of conservative acquiescence to liberal whiners such as herself. Alas, its not like the 'good old days' when  all a militant liberal had to do to shout down a conservative was to merely shout at all. Whoopeee surely misses those days when a poor, black, corn-rowed, clabber-headed Jewish girl didn't have to raise her voice to such a level to put a skinny, blonde, WASP girl back into her proper place.

Sits Next to Joy Behar

Submitted by libBuster on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 9:31am.

How can anyone who sits next to Joy Behar whine about the decline of "civility".  Goldberg herself made crude jokes about  a "Bush".

Leftists emote a dirge of sorrow when the rough and tumble of a campaign gets too tough. Yet apparently its great sport to call Sarah Palin and "idiot", Tea Partiers, "racists" and Christine O'Donnell a "witch".

She's right, but....

Submitted by tampamom25 on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 9:32am.

I haven't read the book, and it pains me greatly, but I agree with the premise of the book.  Civility and common courtesy are disappearing.  Pay closer attention next time you're out at the Mall on a Friday night.  Kids have no respect for their elders, filthy language is becoming the "norm", people let doors slam in your face instead of helping if you're carrying packages. You can't make a trip through WalMart without hearing the "f" word at least once.  No one watches where they're walking, the middle of the aisle is a place to gather and talk and never mind if someone might want to get through.  You say "excuse me" and get a look that says you should find another way around.  Even in parking lots, people pay no attention to anything but their own little space.  They walk down the middle of the car lane as if it was a pedestrian walk-way and they owned it.  People are becoming so self-absorbed that it's as if they are the only important ones in the world.  The Bible says that in the End Times people will become lovers of self, boastful, proud and arrogant.  Those things are reaching epic proportion.  All of that said, is the best she can do for a cover to be sitting on a toilet???

Whoopi preaching about

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 9:47am.

Whoopi preaching about civility is like the Democrats preaching about bipartisanship.

They sit smugly  in their glass houses and  command that others not throw their stones back at them.
