NYT Wants You To Know: Percentage-wise, Hasan Was Hardly Ever Homicidal

Check out the headline from on the front page of the hard-copy New York City edition of today's New York Times:

After Years of Growing Tension, 7 Minutes of Bloodshed

The article reports that Nidal Malik Hasan began feeling disgruntled with the Army as far back as 2004.

Let's see, there are 525,948 minutes in a year. If Hasan's been feeling "tension" for about five years, that makes about 2,629,740 tension-filled minutes.  And during that entire period, he only engaged in a homicidal rampage for seven minutes.  I mean, come on, he was only a murderer for some tiny, tiny fraction of 1% of the time!

To put things in better perspective, Nidal Malik Hasan only murdered one person per roughly 202,287 minutes of disgruntlement endured.

Before we add, by prosecuting him for murder, to the anti-Muslim harrassment poor Nidal has suffered, perhaps the Times will nominate him for some kind of medal for the admirable restraint he manifested.

Note: the online edition of the same article is headlined "Fort Hood Gunman Gave Signals Before His Rampage."  Perhaps an editor realized just how grotesque the hard-copy headline was. But by then, it had hit the streets.

I interpreted  the headline

I interpreted  the headline a different way: that years of tension building up like a pressure cooker finally exploded in seven minutes of rage.

Yes.  But I think it was

Yes.  But I think it was also the Times' way of putting things in "perspective."

Look out for blame-shifting spin

I'm sure the Times would tell you it's a dramatic headline that makes you want to read further. People are curious: what pushed him to this heinous seven minutes? But it can lead to people focusing on the "tensions" -- alleged harassment of Muslims, Defense Department failures to recognize he was a psycho or a jihadist -- and ignoring the crimes.

Tim, I agree that the focus

Tim, I agree that the focus will be, and in fact already is on "what led to this?" That is always the case in a shooting spree.

And I have no doubt that his Muslim beliefs will be minimized, if not downright ignored, as a cause, complete with repeated calls to not condemn all Muslims (after all, it's just a coincidence).

However, just as in the case of the school shooter who was tormented by his classmates for years, the "buildup" is portrayed as just that.

If a headline about a high school shooting said  "Senion snapped; Years of harrassment, Ten Minutes of Violence" would you think they were implying  that he only committed one shooting spree  in his whole high school career? Or would you see it as tension building up for years and finally exploding?

Much as I dislike the NYT  most of the time, I see this as the usual "what caused this guy to do this?"  I just don't see the headline as an attempt to portray proportionality.

"Hardly" ever homicidal????

What the Hell does that mean?   Is that like being a "little" bit pregnant?   Idiots....we are surrounded by them...!!  This dirtbag said "infidels should have their heads cut off and hot oil poured down their necks"  guess thats doesn't sound homicidal either.....rather peaceful when you say it slow......maggots!!!

That's not what I said.

That's not what I said.

Who are you replying to?

Here's Something To Straighten Out Your Thoughts

WHO CARES why the evil and insane do what they do??

They've lived amongst us for all history and they always will where there is nothing that can stop them but equal or higher levels of force when and where they commit their crimes.

 Wake up!

"Alleged Shooter" This is

"Alleged Shooter" This is the way the Fort Hood terrorist is described by the MSM. The police woman was not "Alleged" to have shot HIM! No alleging here....she just pulled out her gun and dropped the bastard. When this gets to court, and we all know it will, the term "alleged" wil come into play. Guess who'll get the short end of the stick?

Got you on the

Got you on the "Alleged."

on a related note, I just can't wait to see what the "Conspiro Class" does with this story.  I bet we will see all sorts of interesting hogwash like:

  • Hasan did not act alone (even some who will say "George Bush was there.)
  • THe NEO-CONs set him up...
  • and that he was being sent to Afghanistan to die...

I so tire of the Conspiro's....

Gee, I bet the New York

Gee, I bet the New York Times gave William J Calley the same treatment right?

After all, he only led an atrocity at Mai Lai once in his military career, right?

Ralph Peters had it right, Islamic Terrorists are not "Well People."  That does not absolve them of being Islamic Terrorists.

I used to work with a guy

I used to work with a guy who claimed to be faithful to his wife "almost all the time". Apparently that wasn't enough for her, as things didn't last between them.

Perspective

I'm sure knowing that will be great comfort to the victim's families.

What do you expect?

The press calls O a "former smoker" because he smokes only rarely.

How Perfect Is That?

Ya wanna know something funny? I read an AP story that said Barry smokes Marlboro REDS!

We are already seeing the

We are already seeing the MSM and lefty commentators shaping this story, bit by bit, to what they want it to be.

This is the MSM goal: to peddle a story that "proves" Hasan killed because the US is such a lousy, terrible place to live, filled with evil conservatives, that Hasan couldn't help himself and was, in fact, driven to kill by the rest of us.

The MSM won't rest until everyone believes that.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

TREASON

I think the headline was simply trying to convey that there was a history of problems, so the attack didn't come out of nowhere. And I'll give the NYT credit for publishing pictures of the terrorist in his Muslim outfit.

I hope he recovers so he can be prosecuted for murder and treason! It seems like a textbook case, doesn't it?

Man made disaster

Latest news is that Hasan was trying to contact the radical imam from his former mosque who has a jihadi website based out of Yemen, a man with Al-Q ties.  Nice, huh?

Janet Reno's going to have a hard time spinning this one.  She's going to need a shovel for this cover-up of the failure of HER Homeland security agency dragging its feet.  Watch, though, as this administration tries to pin the tail on the DoD for Hasan's murderous rampage.

Disgusting.  Congress will have hearings, while retiring a couple of good generals, for the failures of the government's incessant political correctness policies in the military.  Do you think anyone in this terrorist's chain of command wanted to get involved in a "racial" imbroglio of reporting his demented behaviour?  Which officer would put his career on the line, knowing the pre-ordained outcome of reporting Hasan?  His OER's should have been enough to get him tossed, but he is a special minority.....no criticism desired or entertained (is that the correct phrase, BD?).

Political correctness may just kill us all.

I hope he fails, too.

Janet Reno????

I thought she was Attorney General under Clinton!  And we didn't HAVE a department of Homeland Security then.  Eric Holder is the current Attorney General.  Sorry, can't blame Reno anymore.

Re Janet Scourge

There's a theory out there that Janet Reno and Janet Napolitano are one and the same.

Slick

"There's a theory out there that Janet Reno and Janet Napolitano are one and the same."

LMBO, Slick2001, shoulda been one of them thar spew alerts.!!~~!!

If an unborn child cannot trust you, why should I,??

Blonde, Sadly you are

Blonde, Sadly you are correct. We will find that he was so protected that the only way for the Walter Reed Senior leadership to get him away from patients was to endorse his RFO requesting orders somewhere else.

Rather than takin gon all of the physical pain in doin the equivalent of chaptering him which likely would have made the news and had all sorts of leftist civil rights groups up in arms.

The Army was in a no win situation with him.  Chapter him - your career is over.  Leave him alone - your career is over.

Political Correctness Kills.

Ahhhh.  The NYT does it

Ahhhh.  The NYT does it again!

That building needs to be vacated, right after they get sued by the families, and our country for lying constantly.

"Years of Tension"  Well yeah they DID declare war on us years ago.  THAT MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT!

Would it be too much to ask for meteor to smash that building to smithereens?

A Pattern?

Major Jihadist Hit the Strip Joints First: http://blogs.dailymail.com/donsurber

"Major Nidal Malik Hasan came into the Starz strip club not far from the base at least three times in the past month, the club’s general manager, Matthew Jones, told FoxNews.com. Army investigators building their case against Hasan plan to interview Jones soon,” reported Fox News.

I heard this morning on Fox News that the Major has come out of coma and is speaking. I wonder if his first words were "where are my 40 black-eyed virgins?"

<Soup Nazi Voice>  No

<Soup Nazi Voice>  No virgins for you!!

Another WTF moment brought

Another WTF moment brought to you by the New York Times

This is typical upside-down,

This is typical upside-down, morally inverted, Timesian logic. Why of course he shouldn't be held accountable for what he did -- it only took seven minutes! It's not what he did, it's what he does most of the time. Rapists aren't CONSTANTLY raping, are they? Thieves aren't CONSTANTLY stealing, right?

The NYTimes may not be a criminal empire in a strictly legal sense, but they are certainly an evil empire.
