If you were a cable TV host whose audience size is obliterated by O'Reilly's, buried by Beck's, hammered by Hannity's and slam-dunked by Susteren's, would you really go around mocking someone else's ratings?
Appparently yes, if you're Ed Schultz. The host of the miniscule MSNBC program went out of his way this evening to belittle the ratings of Dennis Miller's radio show . . .
Schultz's snide comment came during his Psycho Talk segment.
ED SCHULTZ: Psycho Talk tonight, let's see, we're one day away from the scariest night of the year, and we've got our very own fear-mongering Hallo-weenie, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. He must be really feeling threatened these days, because both houses of the Congress have got a health-care reform bill with a public option. He's falling back on the old, discredited lies. He went on the very low-rated Dennis Miller radio show the other day.Actually, Ed, the scariest nights for you are when the TV ratings come out, revealing that not only is your audience a paltry 16% of Bill O'Reilly's, but that you get soundly beaten by the likes of Nancy Grace, Larry King, Anderson Cooper and even Campbell Brown.
Mote, meet beam.

Ratings?
October 30, 2009 - 19:27 ET by richb313Ratings to the uninformed can be very misleading. First Dennis is syndicated on Westwood One. They have pretty good distribution but lack many larger markets. If the ratings were only measured by total listeners it does not take into considerstion how many radio stations carry the show. A better measure would be Market Penatration where the listeners are compared to total Market. The Market is not all Radio listeners but the target market. Then you see how much of that targeted market is actually penetrated or how many of those listeners had a chance to hear the commercials.
Ratings like many things used to measure the performance of any particular show is greatly misunderstood by most people. I wonder how much Market Penatration that Mr. Schultz has compared to Dennis Miller. Since CNN is available in all markets his total numbers may be larger but are meaningless. It is Market Penetration that the people who pay for the ads are concerned about. I tried to get access to data but could not find it, anyone have a link to the actuall numbers?

Scenes from a mauling
October 30, 2009 - 21:24 ET by CO2MakerThis morning, I watched out the kitchen window at a feral cat in my back yard playing with a field mouse for about 10-15 minutes, dropping it, letting it run away, stalking and pouncing on it, until finally it killed the mouse and ate it.
Reminds me of another scene I'd like to watch: Schultz and Miller in a live 20-minute Texas steel-cage talk-radio head-to-head, no rescue verbal beat-down. I'm giving Ed "I hope my face doesn't freeze like this" Schultz about five minutes trying to grok Miller's obscure cultural allusions until he realizes Miller has cut him deep, wide, and continuous. The last fifteen minutes will be like watching the cat have its way with the mouse.

Schultz vs. Miller
October 31, 2009 - 03:07 ET by sarge329Until I had read this article, I had never even heard of this Ed Schultz. However, we have fortunate in that our cable provider has not insulted us with MSNBC, the TV version of Air America. The main difference between those two is that at least MSNBC has funding. Schultz sealed his fate by signing on with MSNBC. Your allusion seems unfair because the mouse had a chance. Schultz, well,..... .
MILLER TIME...
October 31, 2009 - 06:45 ET by danybhoyThis is 1 verbal fight that will be all 1 way traffic. Miller won't even break a sweat in crushing Special Ed, he'll insult Ed with something that will go over Ed's head & he won't understand the joke.
Maybe Ed needs to be told about not getting into a verbal pissing match with an actual comic, & a very good 1 at that.

I Never Thought I'd Say This: I Like Miller Better Than Schultz!
October 30, 2009 - 22:20 ET by The7SticksOr is it "I like Miller Light better than Schlitz"? I just don't know what happened. I actually though for a couple of years that Ed Schultz made sense, but then he went New York on me. It's like he's a completely different personality from when he was still broadcasting from Fargo. He now just sucks. I've also listened to Miller's show for same amount of time (I'm listening to it as I write.) and, every now and then, I get pissed off over something he says or buys into, but for the most part, I find him an amiable bloke. Especially with his gags and his sidekick Sal. I always get a trip out of "Shoot The Antenna!" or "Antwerp! Aha!". Of course, my favorite is Phil Hendrie, so no offense, but Hendrie's the one who rocks most.

Schultz is a schlub
October 31, 2009 - 07:17 ET by CO2MakerSchultz comes across as, well, what he was--a radio sports announcer--who's got the political bug and channels too much televangelist frenzy amped up with caffeine or speed or something.
Rush stands apart from all the others, all of them. What sets him apart--and what no one else has come close to emulating--isn't his encyclopedic knowledge of politics (which he has), or his extremely articulate delivery (which he does better than anyone else), but it's his humor, his sense of the absurd, and his over-the-top self-promotion which is always delivered with a wink that tells us he's kidding, at least just a wee bit about "on loan from God" and "tied behind his back," etc.
By comparison, Ed "I look like a televangelist car saleman" Schultz flops around like a fish on the pier.
I have to agree
October 31, 2009 - 08:30 ET by doug1950Rush's humor is sophisticated and more often than not the left just does not get it and get insulted long before the end of the joke or parody simply because they do not like him or what he stands for. Many times liberal politicians and what passes for comedy from left leaning comedians falls flatter than a flitter but the audience brays like jackasses anyway (Letterman has made a lot of money for just this kind of audience). They don't always get those jokes either but laugh anyway because the rest of the crowd is laughing. They think they are suppose to laugh, so they do. Often they will say something and absolutely NO one gets it and they have to announce, " it was a joke". When you have to say it was a joke, it wasn't a joke or funny.
Back to Schultz. He is a dunce and is desparate for acknowledgement, even if it is negative. Classic bully behavior and tactics. The fat, sweaty, red faced blivet who craves attention because something is lacking in their own lives.
It is really kind of a pathetic. Schuster is basically the same only I find him to just be a snotty like weasel on top of everything else. Neither are very smart or articulate so they substitute brains with BS and false bravado..
Sgt Schultz..

October 31, 2009 - 14:13 ET by CO2MakerBut they wash up on the beach and don't really flop. And I just couldn't imagine any fisherman hauling one up onto the pier!
Here's a really gross thought: Schultzy on the pier, flopping around like a fish, in a Speedo.
