Eight-Figure Couric Demands 'Humility' From Seven-Figure Wall Streeters

Dispatch from the Department of Pot-Meet-Kettle . . .

Katie Couric has demanded "humility" from Wall Streeters making seven-figure incomes.  This from a woman pulling down . . . eight figures [an estimated $15 million/year] from CBS while cementing the Evening News' caboose status.

Couric made her hypocritical plea in her "Notebook" segment yesterday, commenting on Pres. Obama's pay czar's plan to cut compensation for employees of financial firms that have received bail-out bucks [emphasis added]:

Critics of the proposed cuts say the big salaries attract the best talent - and that capitalism keeps the government out of private sector pay.

But Wall Street's seven figure svengalis got us into this mess in the first place. And taxpayers kept them afloat. Now isn't the time to pat themselves on the back. A little humility, not hubris, is in order.

We can debate the merits of the Obama admin plan.  And it's true that, as far as I know, neither CBS nor its corporate parents received bailout funds [in contrast with, say, Keith Olbermann's corporate parent GE, whose GE Finance arm got a $139 billion government loan guarantee].

Even so, is it really Couric's place to preach humility to others for what she sees as their inflated salaries?

up yours!

Boy, the South Park guys sure had it right when they used her name to denote a measurement of crap.

Screw you, lady!

Thank you Machiavelli

Thank you Machiavelli, I see your logical inference about how we got into this mess is without fault.

The government had nothing to do with it, you are right.

You look cute too. /sarc off

what will she say

when Obama puts a cap on her salary? what will Labron James say when his is capped? What will YOU say or me? (ooops mine has already been capped...no raise for 3 yrs. just so Ican keep my health bennies)

Oh, this is.....

really rich!

I think Katie should have her salary cut by 90%.....no, better yet, give her a pink slip.  If her salary were related to her ratings....oh yeah, baby, pay for performance.

Que'lle hypocrite.

I hope he fails, too.

All of you mere peons do not

All of you mere peons do not understand that Couric by the fact that she is a TV News ANCHOR is in a class far above you. Yes,  NEWS ANCHORS, CONGRESSMEN, and the POTUS are royalty and not to be questioned. The sooner we all learn this the less tension and conflict we will have./sarc

How about O'Reilly

O'Reilly seems to have a problem with big salaries as well.  I think he should cut his first.

Re BOR

Agreed, 'fatcat' is one of BOR's favorite words. Of course, I'm sure he will point to his ratings and claim that he deserves his.

O'Reilly use things called

O'Reilly use things called FACTS though, which have eluded the left for decades.  So yes, HIS salary is justified.  Not to mention all of his success is due to his achievements.  Couric on the other hand is just a stupid pretty (sometimes) face.  Big difference.

Did it hurt?

That THUNK when irony smacked you in the skull.

The point of the article was this - GE took bailout money from the U.S Government. The U.S. Government is capping pay for companies that took bailout money. Katie Couric works for GE and should have her pay capped. Yet, irony of ironies, she is whining about the overpaid people that worked at companies that took bailout money.

   Put a band-aid on that.

O'Reilly works for Fox which is as our President reminds us, not a news organization, and did not get any bailout money.

Hey, you are getting blood on the carpet. Put a band-aid on that.

Whuh?

Couric is a twit; I agree.  But doesn't she work for CBS?  CBS and GE are exclusive entities.  Now NBC and GE...not so much...

Do Something Amazing!

Oh poo.

You are correct. And shame on you for knowing where Couric worked. In that light, I guess a gratuitous shot at O'Reilly can stand. My apologies to NoMoreChange. I is skullthwacked.

I don't even know what to say about this

Our elected representatives have failed us.

Let's see...

The bad guys employ education, experience, time, intuition and intelligence to form and implement strategies... and ulcers... to expand the wealth of their shareholders (which includes themselves) and provide products and innovations that benefit their customers.  For this, they get seven figures.

K-K-K-Katie reads a teleprompter and tries to look pretty... for a couple of hours a day... for twice the money.

Ain't capitalism grand?

Katie C**TUS

That's a breathtaking bit of blithering unawareness by Katie C**TUS. And she's proof that the biggest salaries don't necessarily attract the best talent.

Cactus?

She is a little prickly. Oh I get it you wanted her to see you next Tuesday.

EIGHT FIGURES?! This

EIGHT FIGURES?!

This 'news' teleprompter reader gets EIGHT FIGURES?!  Are you kidding me?

This superficial piece of trash gets eight figures for misinforming the public while my wife and I struggle to survive in Owebamas America?  I am beyond disgusted.

Hey Katie, put your money where your pie hole is, and demand a salary decrease for ALL news people.  This includes an and all cable talk show people as well.  If things are THAT bad, then you people should learn an actual SKILL that contributes something useful and tangible to the American Public.

Hey six string...

I was gonna post...but you said it better than I woulda/coulda. If I were Obamaone, I'd be pissed, He only gets a million a year for reading off the teleprompter....

I thought Owebamas salary

I thought Owebamas salary was 400K a year?  Or did MEchelle have something to say about that?

If I sound a bit up tight this week it's because I am.  I live in Sudbury, MA where that piece of garbage Muslim was arrested Wednesday.  There are only 2 malls in our vicinity that he would have shot up, and my wife and I frequent them.  I damn near drove off the road when I heard it on the radio.

Hey six...

I was being nice.    He's prob got over 10 mil in an off shore account in only 10 months   lol   ....not lol

Do you think he will get

Do you think he will get taxed on his offshore account.......I doubt it.

Why Not GE?

With this new fascist dictate from the Bamster, why is no one asking why this round doesn't affect GE, one of the recipients of a huge chunk of TARP cash? Are some TARP recipients more equal than others?

Why is GE Exempt From Government-Ordered Pay Cuts? http://jammiewearingfool.blogspot.com

Let's say this gains popular support.

Surely it wouldn't be a hard sell to convince folks during this economic climate that large salaries for poor performance doesn't make a whole lot of sense. What would stop the democrats from trying to impliment this in other industries besides the banking and car business? With, or without taxpayer bailout money? After all, it's the taxpayer who (or is it whom? I never learned this rule during my public education...) is the consumer, right? It's the taxpayer who uses cellphones- why should the Verizon guy make so much money? Can you hear them now? How about now? Computer manufacturers? Software? Hear that Lawrence J. Ellison of Oracle? How about doing your civic duty and kicking back about 90% of your $84M salary in the way of hig h e r   t  a   x    e     s?         Uh oh...

P.S. NFLPA, maybe you got some splainin' to do...

Katie "I'm going to bring

Katie "I'm going to bring you a new kind of news" Couric gets $15 million a year for reading off a teleprompter 20 minutes a day, five days a week. That's quite a gig she's got.

She's worth about $8 an hour, tops. Maybe  $8.25 on a good day.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

The American Way

"National" ≠ "Federal government"

The federal government is not authorized to stick its nose into every national issue.

  • The other day, in a relatively harmless example, Orrin Hatch wanted to pass legislation about college football. He described it as a national problem, and by that, he just assumed that gave the federal government authority to intrude.
  • Here, the inequity of executive pay is a national issue, on which there is dispute. That fact that it's a national issue doesn't mean that Congress has any authority to decide the issue. Stick their nose out of it.

Frankly, I agree that executive pay is out of balance. But if the company is profitable and they don't do anything about it, that's their own business. That's a function of the market, and that's what boards of trustees and stockholders are supposed to fix.

You will hear congressmen argue (I read one yesterday) that the "general welfare" clause authorizes Congress to do whatever it wants. My friends, the general welfare clause is purely hortatory, meaning it simply expresses a general wish -- it wasn't intended to confer any actual power. The whole Constitution is built on the principle of enumerated powers, meaning Congress only has the specific powers we spell out. To throw all that out and say that a phrase in the preamble trumps all that enumeration and that congress has no restrictions on its power is simply a comment made in ignorance.

More and more, I'm convinced that liberal Democrats and ignorant Republicans (i.e., moderates, not conservatives) either don't know how the constitution works, or don't feel bound by it. They don't understand The American Way.

          Couric

Couric is either stupid or lying through her teeth, like the white house is. What got us in this mess is Acorn's B.S.. Fannie & Freddy, combined with Barney Frank's lies in 2003(?), are also to blame. I do think the ones that have taken the bailout money should have their salaries cut till they pay it back, but they aren't the reason we are in this mess. The white house is to blame, too. They had no authority to give OUR money to anyone.

Don't be too harsh

to the perky one.  Remember her Today Show medical procedure?  She can honestly say she took it up the *** to get where she is now.  The others did too, they just don't have video proof....or do they??

Gun Control - The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.

most of the high rollers-

on wall street-get paid only once a year. and only if they have a good year for the company.now we can debate what is a good year. however the TV and Radio media along with the written going down the tubes not making any money for the stock holders-how does one justify 8 figures for reading a script.

something very wrong if you are not making money for the company. off with her head.

BHO-  THE PROGRESSIVE PIRATE

For the ratings drop that

For the ratings drop that has accompanied Katie's evening news, should she take a pay cut?

Is the White House emailing her while she's on the air to keep her newscasts 'correct'?

Katie, you ignorant slut!

oh no.......ka ka ka ka katie!!

Maybe the bimbo of the airways should practice what she preaches!!!  wadda maroon!

Hows that old saying go

Oh yea, people who live in a glass house should not throw rocks.

The dumbing down of America continues each night, continue to watch the antics of Katie (bimbo) Couric, Rachael Maddow, Chrissy (Mr. Bo Tingles) Matthews, Anderson Cooper and our favorite Obie the bathtub boy.  For people with more discriminating taste, your favorite stations will continue to present quality right wing bashing via HBO and MTV.  Please consult your local listings.

Just a thought, but has anyone ever offered Chrissy some cheese to go with his nightly whine?

Quick! The gene pool needs more chlorine.

Wow, if I had known I could

Wow, if I had known I could earn 8 figures as a professional reader I would have paid more attention to them books in grammar school.

Since her network's ratings have tanked

with her as anchor, perhaps Katie should have some of her excessive salary clawed back.

Katie's ratings not so perky

Maybe her salary should be based on how much audience she draws.

Katie, Katie, Katie

Where's your humility? Give back 90% of your income and I'll believe that you speak with humility, not hubris!!!!!

Funny air traffic control anecdote that is relevant

There is a rather well-known anecdote about radio traffic on open channels to ATC. At an Air Force Base, a fighter pilot asked for expedited landing because his single jet engine was active very erratic. The air controller said he was in line behind a B-52 that had suffered a shutdown in one of its engines. The fighter pilot remarked, "Oh, the dreaded seven-engine landing."

Seems like that's somehow appropriate here. "Oh, the dreaded seven-digit paycheck." But it's spoken by an eight-digit employee.

10% of Katie C**TUS's salary

is still $1,500,000 a year. That ain't chump change.

100% - 90% = 10%

So, if the payczar reduces the salaries by 90%, that leaves, what? 10% for the employee. That's a tithe, folks. The gummint is now in the business of tithing?Isn't there a First Amendment issue here?

more like 4th

Should be the 4th Amendment, protect from unreasonable search and seizure.  Oh the one that protects from cruel and unusual punishments, the 8th Amendment I believe it is.  That one is more appropriate.
