Dispatch from the Department of Pot-Meet-Kettle . . .
Katie Couric has demanded "humility" from Wall Streeters making seven-figure incomes. This from a woman pulling down . . . eight figures [an estimated $15 million/year] from CBS while cementing the Evening News' caboose status.
Couric made her hypocritical plea in her "Notebook" segment yesterday, commenting on Pres. Obama's pay czar's plan to cut compensation for employees of financial firms that have received bail-out bucks [emphasis added]:
Critics of the proposed cuts say the big salaries attract the best talent - and that capitalism keeps the government out of private sector pay.But Wall Street's seven figure svengalis got us into this mess in the first place. And taxpayers kept them afloat. Now isn't the time to pat themselves on the back. A little humility, not hubris, is in order.
We can debate the merits of the Obama admin plan. And it's true that, as far as I know, neither CBS nor its corporate parents received bailout funds [in contrast with, say, Keith Olbermann's corporate parent GE, whose GE Finance arm got a $139 billion government loan guarantee].
Even so, is it really Couric's place to preach humility to others for what she sees as their inflated salaries?

Thank you Machiavelli
October 23, 2009 - 08:42 ET by legacyrepublicanThank you Machiavelli, I see your logical inference about how we got into this mess is without fault.
The government had nothing to do with it, you are right.

October 23, 2009 - 08:43 ET by Blondereally rich!
I think Katie should have her salary cut by 90%.....no, better yet, give her a pink slip. If her salary were related to her ratings....oh yeah, baby, pay for performance.
Que'lle hypocrite.
I hope he fails, too.

Yes, NEWS ANCHORS, CONGRESSMEN, and the POTUS are royalty and not to be questioned. The sooner we all learn this the less tension and conflict we will have./sarc
How about O'Reilly
October 23, 2009 - 08:51 ET by NoMoreChangeO'Reilly seems to have a problem with big salaries as well. I think he should cut his first.
Re BOR
October 23, 2009 - 09:09 ET by slickwillie2001Agreed, 'fatcat' is one of BOR's favorite words. Of course, I'm sure he will point to his ratings and claim that he deserves his.
O'Reilly use things called
October 23, 2009 - 09:44 ET by Six String SpiffO'Reilly use things called FACTS though, which have eluded the left for decades. So yes, HIS salary is justified. Not to mention all of his success is due to his achievements. Couric on the other hand is just a stupid pretty (sometimes) face. Big difference.
Did it hurt?
October 23, 2009 - 10:48 ET by JWFThat THUNK when irony smacked you in the skull.
The point of the article was this - GE took bailout money from the U.S Government. The U.S. Government is capping pay for companies that took bailout money. Katie Couric works for GE and should have her pay capped. Yet, irony of ironies, she is whining about the overpaid people that worked at companies that took bailout money.
Put a band-aid on that.
O'Reilly works for Fox which is as our President reminds us, not a news organization, and did not get any bailout money.
Hey, you are getting blood on the carpet. Put a band-aid on that.
Whuh?
October 23, 2009 - 14:00 ET by Corny_McPooCouric is a twit; I agree. But doesn't she work for CBS? CBS and GE are exclusive entities. Now NBC and GE...not so much...

October 23, 2009 - 09:13 ET by Six String SpiffEIGHT FIGURES?!
This 'news' teleprompter reader gets EIGHT FIGURES?! Are you kidding me?
This superficial piece of trash gets eight figures for misinforming the public while my wife and I struggle to survive in Owebamas America? I am beyond disgusted.
Hey Katie, put your money where your pie hole is, and demand a salary decrease for ALL news people. This includes an and all cable talk show people as well. If things are THAT bad, then you people should learn an actual SKILL that contributes something useful and tangible to the American Public.

October 23, 2009 - 09:27 ET by BKeyserSurely it wouldn't be a hard sell to convince folks during this economic climate that large salaries for poor performance doesn't make a whole lot of sense. What would stop the democrats from trying to impliment this in other industries besides the banking and car business? With, or without taxpayer bailout money? After all, it's the taxpayer who (or is it whom? I never learned this rule during my public education...) is the consumer, right? It's the taxpayer who uses cellphones- why should the Verizon guy make so much money? Can you hear them now? How about now? Computer manufacturers? Software? Hear that Lawrence J. Ellison of Oracle? How about doing your civic duty and kicking back about 90% of your $84M salary in the way of hig h e r t a x e s? Uh oh...

The American Way
October 23, 2009 - 09:39 ET by KC Mulville"National" ≠ "Federal government"
The federal government is not authorized to stick its nose into every national issue.
Frankly, I agree that executive pay is out of balance. But if the company is profitable and they don't do anything about it, that's their own business. That's a function of the market, and that's what boards of trustees and stockholders are supposed to fix.
You will hear congressmen argue (I read one yesterday) that the "general welfare" clause authorizes Congress to do whatever it wants. My friends, the general welfare clause is purely hortatory, meaning it simply expresses a general wish -- it wasn't intended to confer any actual power. The whole Constitution is built on the principle of enumerated powers, meaning Congress only has the specific powers we spell out. To throw all that out and say that a phrase in the preamble trumps all that enumeration and that congress has no restrictions on its power is simply a comment made in ignorance.
More and more, I'm convinced that liberal Democrats and ignorant Republicans (i.e., moderates, not conservatives) either don't know how the constitution works, or don't feel bound by it. They don't understand The American Way.
Couric
October 23, 2009 - 09:45 ET by jessieHCouric is either stupid or lying through her teeth, like the white house is. What got us in this mess is Acorn's B.S.. Fannie & Freddy, combined with Barney Frank's lies in 2003(?), are also to blame. I do think the ones that have taken the bailout money should have their salaries cut till they pay it back, but they aren't the reason we are in this mess. The white house is to blame, too. They had no authority to give OUR money to anyone.

Funny air traffic control anecdote that is relevant
October 23, 2009 - 13:42 ET by CO2MakerThere is a rather well-known anecdote about radio traffic on open channels to ATC. At an Air Force Base, a fighter pilot asked for expedited landing because his single jet engine was active very erratic. The air controller said he was in line behind a B-52 that had suffered a shutdown in one of its engines. The fighter pilot remarked, "Oh, the dreaded seven-engine landing."
Seems like that's somehow appropriate here. "Oh, the dreaded seven-digit paycheck." But it's spoken by an eight-digit employee.
10% of Katie C**TUS's salary
October 23, 2009 - 13:45 ET by CO2Makeris still $1,500,000 a year. That ain't chump change.
100% - 90% = 10%
October 23, 2009 - 13:47 ET by CO2MakerSo, if the payczar reduces the salaries by 90%, that leaves, what? 10% for the employee. That's a tithe, folks. The gummint is now in the business of tithing?Isn't there a First Amendment issue here?
