Are liberals less racist and/or more knowledgeable about racism than others? Donny Deutsch evidently thinks so. On MSNBC this afternoon, Deutsch asked a black academic to give him an example of racism he'd encountered because "as liberal as I am, I can't understand because I've never walked in your shoes."
Prof. James Peterson of Bucknell was a guest in MSNBC's 4 PM EDT hour, during which Deutsch served as sidekick/kibitzer to host Tamron Hall. Peterson was in to comment on this evening's impending beer fest among Pres. Obama, Sgt. Crowley and Prof. Gates.
DONNY DEUTSCH: Let's do a little, one of these discussions right now between you and I [sic]. We've never met. You're an African-American man; I'm a white man. Give me an incident that's happened in your life that, as liberal as I am, I can't understand because I've never walked in your shoes.
Prof. Peterson described an incident from grad school in which someone scrawled the n-word on his study cubicle, and how that upset him during his upcoming exams and the year that followed.
I suppose it's refreshing to have an MSNBC personality cop to being a big-tme liberal. But his implicit suggestion that liberals are inherently more tolerant than others is so much malarkey, IMHO.

Malarkey indeed. I am
July 30, 2009 - 15:57 ET by bigtimerMalarkey indeed.
I am getting sick and tired of the constant BS 24/7 for years now.
I do not know how you can watch that network anymore Mark...I did some yesterday, even commented about Tamaron and Donny...along with others regarding them demanding Beck be fired etc...Donny was absolutely atrocious.
msnbc is despicable...all of it.
Don't get me wrong, I check what the enemy is doing now and then, but I can't take it anymore like I used to, I am grateful you do so we do know what is going on.

Lefty democrats graduated from the school of racism...
July 30, 2009 - 16:38 ET by R D Helm...over 150 years ago.
After all, they brought us the Klan and Jim Crow.
In modern times, they have brought us Planned Parenthood, an organization founded by a self-professed, racist NAZI, for the sole purpose of reducing "undesirable" minority births, particularly those of black children.
The democrats tried their level best to stop the Civil Rights Act of 1964 from passing, and had it not been for republicans, it would not have.
They brought us welfare programs specifically designed to drive away the natural fathers of minority and particularly black children, while setting up their single mothers in their own apartments and a monthly income-as long as the father stayed away. That, as you all know, did wonders for the cohesion of the traditional black family, particularly in our inner cities.
The left has spent 60+ years trying to convince us that minority Americans, particularly black Americans, are too racially inferior to make it on their own, and therefore require hordes of government liberal know-it-alls to take care of them.
-It doesn't get more racist than that.
They also have a mechanism in place to publicly disparage any black Americans who escape from their liberal plantation that is designed to shame them into returning, or at least intimidate them into keeping their mouth's shut.
And you can bet that, once they have gotten Hispanic illegal aliens the right to vote in our national elections, they will throw black Americans under the bus, and start working immediately to do the same, wonderful things for their new favored minority that they once did for black Americans, which will ultimately result in their cultural near-destruction as well.
Of course, the democrats have been running our nations education system for over 100 years now, and they have made damn sure none of the above history gets anywhere near our nations students. After all, that just wouldn't do, particularly when you are seeking their votes in order to further increase their dependence on government.
Yeah, I'd say these democrats have the racism angle locked up tight.
But then, they have had over 1.5 centuries to perfect it.

Talk about sh*t hitting the fan if I did that. The raging inferno of beet-red mad libs coming at me -- possibly finding me and doing harm, even -- would probably be overwhelming.
But oh, am I tempted. :p
It's not a humble opinion
July 30, 2009 - 16:27 ET by mattmIt's not a humble opinion at all, Mark. The implicit suggestion that liberals are more tolerant is not only malarkey, it's directly opposite the truth.
This nut also implied that the black man is different than he is, and that the black man's experiences have been more difficult than his own.
That speaks of a prejudice and bigotry liberals own but refuse to acknowledge, because to do so would force them off their pedestal of tolerance from where they pass judgment on all the conservative bigots out there...
I wonder if this putz would have asked Clarence Thomas the same thing using the same words.... I doubt it.
The Other Side of the Coin
July 30, 2009 - 16:28 ET by Utherpend"Prof. Peterson described an incident from grad school in which someone scrawled the n-word on his study cubicle, and how that upset him during his upcoming exams and the year that followed."
I wonder if Prof Peterson ever stopped to consider that perhaps a person of "color" may have scrawled that word on his cubicle? After all we know that 99% of black songs, urban speak and literature contains the N-word. So how is it not a culpret in who wrote that dirty word on his cube?

Silly
July 30, 2009 - 16:51 ET by KC MulvilleThink of why this is a brutally silly statement:
Saying that you can't understand because you haven't walked in someone's shoes is almost always a fraud. It usually means that you're pretending to "open your mind" to someone else's experience. No one really buys that.
Wow . . . .
July 30, 2009 - 16:56 ET by panzerakcSo there actually exists on this planet a man who has never experienced ANY kind of discrimination in his life, and could not, therefore, extend that experience to that of a man discriminated against because of his skin color.
Nobody has ever discriminated against Deutsch because of his last name, or because he didn't come from the right family, or have the proper amount of money, drive the right car, live in the right neighborhood, have the right job, cellphone, wardrobe, or any of the other bazillion or so things that humans use to discriminate against one another.
Wow.
Donny Deutsch is an ad
July 30, 2009 - 17:15 ET by fitzfongDonny Deutsch is an ad man. Having worked primarily in the ad business myself, I am well aware of Deutsch's rhetorical technique here. In an attempt to appear self-aware and repentant, Deutsch deliberately frames his self-flagellation so that it appears that his ideology somehow corners the market on racial sensitivity and tolerance...as if the barrier between a racist and a non-racist is a an endorsement of liberal principles. And he says it casually, matter-of-factly as if he's spouting conventional wisdom or "settled science" that is so well-established that it cannot be disputed. He knows this is dishonest, but it's also effective.

I
July 30, 2009 - 20:30 ET by jessieHI can go one better. I have seen racism most of my life, and I'm an Irish, Scottish, English, Norwegian, American. Yes, I'm white. We got a little lost in East St. Louis, one night. Has anyone been there? I was fine, but my passengers were scared. Really scared. They, my friends, were all black. They told me not to stop for any reason. I didn't listen. I went into a bar to get directions. They thought I wouldn't come out alive. But I met some really cool people in there. They gave me directions to get back on the highway. I saw more racism from my friends than I saw in that bar. Maybe I got lucky, but I think I made a couple of new friends. My point is, everyone is a little racist, if they don't see the person, only the color.
