Noted free-speech champion Keith Olbermann has declared that we have to "legally stop" Glenn Beck. The Fox News host's crime? Not reacting strongly enough for Olbermann's taste when a guest made an over-the-top remark. [H/t reader JKF.]
On the June 30 editon of Beck's show, former CIA analyst Michael Scheuer said: "the only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to detonate a major weapon in the United States." Apparently Scheuer thinks that's what it would take to shock the country and its leaders back to their senses. Olbermann was infuriated that Beck didn't "scream at him" or otherwise jump down Scheuer's throat, choosing instead to nod gravely while suggesting that would be the last thing OBL would do.

In Olbermann's eyes, nodding in the third degree is a crime warranting legal action to "stop" Beck.
KEITH OLBERMANN: Mr. Scheuer has issued a call for the the head of al Qaeda to detonate a major weapon in the United States. And yet, for some reason, to my knowledge at least, the Department of Homeland Security has not yet been to see him, nor been to see Mr. Beck nor Fox News for having provided him a platform and passive assent, for approving not just a terrorist attack which could kill Americans, but approving of one that might even kill Fox viewers. If we're going to continue to prevent terrorism in this country, international or domestic, we have to legally stop the people who view terrorism as acceptable means of effecting political change in this country. People like Michael Scheuer. And we have to legally stop the people like Glenn Beck, the enablers, who simply nod gravely as if the idea, and the speaker are not treasonous.

Let me give you a little more background that happened while you were doing "save the planet" projects in elementary school. The twin towers were bombed in 1993, and Clinton's solution was to ignore AQ and charge a few guys with some crimes. But oh, a white guy in Oklahoma bombed a building, and suddenly it meant every white gun owner in America was dangerous.
Fast forward to 2000 - under BJ Clinton's watch AQ attacked us again, this time bombing a Navy ship and killing 17 soldiers. Any other nation would have seen this as an act of war. But not BJ. He allowed the men involved to be convicted and imprisoned under the legal system in Yemen. Then the Yemani government didn't really care and let all of them either escape or take early release.
The plain fact is, nobody gave a flying flip about AQ until 9/11. And now with another Democrat in charge, it's back to business as usual. Obama will pretend that AQ is not a threat - just like Clinton - until AQ makes him pay for it.
No one is rooting for this to happen or hoping for it. Just like the Iraq war dissenters were not "hoping" for American losses to embarrass George Bush, right?
It's a very simple concept. Pretend that Bush is still in charge and Sheuer said that on MSNBC. Suddenly you will be nodding in agreement.

Why Osama attacked America to begin with, going back to the gulf war. America (infidels) were on the holy land of Saudi Arabia, Osama's home country. Osama was considered by his people a great soldier for his fighting off the Russians in Afghanistan (when we supplied arms to stop the spread of communism), and Osama wanted to fight off Iraq from continuing his invasion from Kuwait to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia turned him down from for America's help.
Osama, upset with Saudi Arabia and began speaking ill of the royal Saudi family and their regime and they kicked him out of his country. Osama blamed America for this, and blamed America again when he was kicked out of Sudan (I think, this is off the top of my head, but it was a Muslim country in Africa). He went back to Afghanistan in the mountains.
The CIA gave a flying flip because there was a Osama department of the CIA. Bush didn't finish the job in Afghanistan because they were focussed on finding the WMD in Iraq, still looking by the way.

I seem to recall back in the earlier days of NB that chemical weapons were indeed found in Iraq - the MSM and Leftists all dismissed them. "They were inert! They couldn't hurt a flea!", they ALL whined.
But truth be told, I fear persistent chemical agents like mustard gas even more than nukes.
See, plant life was growing again in Hiroshima and Nagasaki the year after the bomb. The cities have been settled again without any ill effects to its citizens (those who were not around for the bombings) that I am aware of. But to this day in France, farmers still occasionally develop mustard blisters from plowing former battlefields. So much for inert, harmless chemical weapons.
P.S. Bush did evict the Taliban and had Karzai installed as president. It is an ongoing process there but you should be aware that many many people have had severe trouble subduing Afghanistan. Alexander the Great, the British Empire or the Soviet Union or others could not do it. Why should you or I expect us to have overnight success there?

Will it actually take a nuclear bomb to wake America up again? That's highly doubtful and Scheuer is simply using theatrical embellishment in his statement (that's making a particular situation sound worse that they really are, in case you don't understand what I mean. It's also called "Fear Mongering" or "Hyperbole" depending upon who's making the statements) so he can impress upon the viewing audience the importance of his assessments.
Is his assessment correct? I don't know about anyone's ability to actually smuggle in and detonate a nuclear device (I think that's rather farfecthed) but I can not discount his statements AND concerns simply because I object to his use of hyperbole in describing the current apathy on display in America in general and the federal government in particular.
