Matthews: 'Reparations Make Sense'

Does my headline bury the lede?  On the one hand, it's catchy to hear Chris Matthews proclaim his belief that reparations for slavery "make sense."

But in the grand scheme of things, one more liberal pundit coming out for reparations might be small potatoes.  Perhaps the bigger story was the statement on this evening's Hardball by Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC). The former head of the Congressional Black Caucus revealed that he saw nationalized health care as a part of reparations.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Clyburn was a guest along with Steve Cohen, the very liberal Dem congressman from Tennessee.  I see Cohen as something of a pathetic figure.  Representing a majority black district, he seems so blatantly to pander to his constituency, trying to fend off black primary challengers.  Cohen, whose application for membership was rejected by the Black Caucus,  recently sponsored a resolution, unanimously adopted by the House, apologizing for slavery.  On this evening's show he also boasted of being a co-sponsor of Rep. John Conyers call for a commission looking into the possibility of reparations.

JAMES CLYBURN: Well, I think that Congressman Cohen's resolution that was unanimously passed by the House offered an apology, but it went into talking about how we ought to go about rectifying some of the current effects of that past discrimination. And that's what we're doing today as we roll out this working draft of our health care bill.

. . .  .

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Yeah, I think reparations make sense. I just wonder if we're ever going to figure out how to do it.  Mr. Clyburn, do you have a clear sense of what's the appropriate, if you were the president right now and had the congress 100% behind you, what would you do?

CLYBURN: What I would do is exactly what we're attempting to do with this legislation, energy legislation, health legislation. I would look at ways that we can programatically and with new policy, address these inequities and make concerted efforts to do things that would make up for them and eliminate the disparities.  That's what I would do. We're talking about addressing inequities, disparities that exist in the health care in our communities.  That's the kind of thing that we ought to be doing.

Nice of Rep. Clyburn to so frankly lay out the real agenda. Wonder if PBO will be pleased that Clyburn let the cat out of the bag?

What has gone on in

What has gone on in Congress the last few days regarding this...and this too is beyond unbelievable to me.

I'm past throwing my hands up anymore.

We issued another apology...for something I have nothing to apologize for...and relatives from the past long dead on both sides during the Civil War in their graves with the fight.

None of us alive had anything to do with slavery, our brothers and sisters gave their lives for that to be abolished decades ago...and this continues on...and on...and on....and on.

Clyburn is a crying shame...and the msm loves him...figures doesn't it...as if he is some brilliant master of the universe.

I am so weary of all of this.

Chris presses the idiot button!

And this right after Chris Tingle accused McCain (and others) of pressing the idiot button!

Impunitas semper ad deteriora invitat.

Yup,

let Soros write a check to cover the reparations.  And Chrissy can piss up his leg too.

These clowns don't realize what they're advocating, they just see it as free money for the folks.  You know, the ones who still won't work, so they need a free ride, free gas, free house and now, free healthcare.

Well I wonder how much each

Well I wonder how much each and every black family owes a white family whose ancestor fought and died for their freedoms.

Correct, I cannot recall

Correct, I cannot recall another instance where members of one race fought so violently to free the members of another race.  You will not find that anywhere else.

ROTFLMAO

Ouch that was/is a good on on yer!! Thanks for the laugh.

Yes to the payoff, uh reparations!

I have changed my mind on this. I say reparations should be paid. The descendants of those responsible have sufficient wealth to aid those other descendants that suffered under the yoke while receiving the lash. The Arab slavers and the black tribesmen who captured those poor folks and then sold them into slavery should pay through the nose. The oil rich Arabs can afford it and we can find others in the oil producing countries in Africa. Perhaps we can take 10% of the dollars we pay for oil! It is a good thing we in the American South have already paid our reparations for the deed. The blood lost and fortune wasted during the War Between the States was only a part of our penance. The utter destruction of great swaths of country and the complete and permanent dismantling of a society is payment enough. Especially if that payment was made by those closest to the evils, is it not? Go after the present chief of some African village and Sheik Ali Ali in Dah Bai, not Jubal Early VII, reenactor.

The leftists are never going to go back that far...the truth is the truth...and they cannot handle The Truth....and they sure as heck don't want their black constituents to hear anything close to the truth...they need those votes...they depend on them...along with the illegals....

This is insane.... There is

This is insane.... There is no one alive today that had anything to do with slavery. But hey...great effort on the apology.

Reparations are just pure idiocy. dont we already have public schools, welfare and other social assistance programs to help those who have squandered the "free" education being offered? Once freed I thought we were all equal, with the same opportunities to achieve the American dream. Those demanding and those with their hands out looking for the freebie in the form of reparations for something that (I strongly disagree with and should never have happened) in the end has landed the ancestors of those who were slaves, in the greatest country in the world with more opportunities than ever would have been afforded them had they not been here, are willing to set back race relations decades with their greed.

don't forget Pearl Harbor

"This is insane.... There is no one alive today that had anything to do with slavery."

Absolutely right.  Should we make the Japanese pay reparations for Pearl Harbor, even though this generation had no responsibility for it and nothing to do with it?

I come from a proud line of

I come from a proud line of Cro-Magnons, and I hereby apologize for that Saturday in April of 75,000 BC when my ancestors clubbed the crap out of, and then ate, that annoying Neanderthal troop who lived down by the river.

I am prepared to offer three shell necklaces and one clovis spearpoint to anyone who can prove they are a descendant of that unlucky troop. (Except for Al Sharpton).

Global warming? No way. We lit a few fires, and not easily.

According to my ancestors, those friggin' mastodons tasted like crap anyway. And ever try to get a 3-foot hair out of your teeth?

Good riddens.

PS: Gloria Allred would probably take your reparations case if you're interested in proceeding.

I just clubbed her up 'side the head and dragged her back to my cave, where I drew suggestive pictoglyphs until she agreed to take my case.

P.S.  How old is her daughter?  I've got a troglodyte friend in New York who makes jokes about them if they're young enough.

I'm all for reparations

Let me know when Egypt has paid the Jewish People.

The Roman descendents pay nearly all of Europe.

The Arabs for all the black slaves in ALL countries.

The American blacks for the death of some of my ancestors for dying to free them from slavery.

And finally, I want the 19 trillion already paid through various government agencies to "improve" the lives of inner city folks,  returned to the taxpayers of this nation.

I would also like some reparations from the elected 'representatives' for being over paid for the amount of "representation" they provide.

Does anyone seriously think

Does anyone seriously think that if we end up with nationalized health care, Clyburn will shut up about reparations?

A new energy policy?  What the H does that have to do with discrimination and reparations?

You know, I think a whole bunch of Americans would be OK with "reparations" if they thought it would be the end of all this  B as in B, S as in S, from Clyburn and his ilk.

But nothing will ever be enough for them.

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.  -Bart Simpson

They won't shut up. Kinda

They won't shut up. Kinda like B Boxer. Being a Senator simply isn't good enough for a liberal woman. She's gotta use her position to bash men. Does anyone think she would have attacked a woman General who called her ma'am? No, I don't think so. But it's ok for her to attack a man because of all the personal repression that particular General heaped upon poor Boxer over her, and her ancestors' lifetimes.

already absolved, i think

Obama has already absolved us of the need to pay reparations.  He did then when he spoke after Daniel Ortega and said that he was “...grateful that President Ortega did not blame me for things that happened when I was three months old.”

It should be pointed out to

It should be pointed out to Blacks (and white liberal Democrats) that:

1) The only ethnic group that abolished slavery was white Europeans and their descendants...

2) Every other major ethnic group practices some sort of slavery to this day...

3) The Constitution's ''blacks count as 3/5ths of a person'' article was actually good for their race. The South wanted blacks to count as one person, the North as zero in the census. Counting them as a whole person (but of course without voting rights) would have granted even more congressmen to the slave-holding South. If they were counted as zero slavery probably would have ended sooner via legislation.

 4) The political party responsible for freeing ther slaves and giving them full citizenship was the Republicans...

5) The party responsible for 100 years of segregation, Jim Crow laws and lynchings were Southern Democrats...

6) Until FDR's New Deal giveaway programs and social engineering blacks voted 80% or more Republican...

7) Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington (both Republicans) AND Martin Luther King Jr. would be appalled at the buffonish and larcenous caliber of today's black Democratic leadership.

In three words . . .

Ridiculous and assinine

Next up: gay reparations

A movement Tingles could really "get behind."

Just curious: has the Congressional White Caucus weighed in on this yet?

And I'll say it again!!!

I am a direct descendent of the French Hugenots, I want my reparations and I want them now!  No way did I want to leave my homeland.  I was forced to leave.  I want to be paid for my persecution.  I have waited a lot longer than many others. OMG I just realized I would be French!  No Way!

Call it even

Can you imagine how long it would take to interview an individual, examine their evidence, and investigate their ancestry to determine if their family was here pre-1865, and did in fact have members that lived as slaves South of Mason-Dixon? What if only one side of your family met the qualifications?  Only one quarter, or one eighth? How many people, er, unionized civil servants would that much clerical work take? Maybe ACORN can just take care of that for us?

On the other hand, why doesn't someone calculate the value of goods and services, wages, salaries and degrees, and political offices and appointments awarded as a function of Affirmative Action programs, and call it even?

How about the fact the I

How about the fact the I can prove that my ancestors came over post Civil War and never had slaves.  Can we determine who owned slaves and only those people have to fund reparations?

Also, maybe we can investigate the Africans who sold their people into slavery and they can fund some of this.  Remember the movie "Amistaad"?  What the movie forgot to show was that the leader of the rebellion aboard the ship went back to Africa and became a slave trader.  Let's hold them accountable as well.

→ Sure can Radical

And as it turns out, Barack Obama's family definitely owned slaves.  I think it was just two, but that's two more than any of my generations owned.

Which side of the family

Which side of the family owned slaves, his mother's or father's?  I wouldn't be at all surprised if his father's side owned plenty.

That makes it American slavery on American soil.

I guess that means Reverend Wright wants God to damn Obama.

REPARATIONS can there be anything more RACIST?

Is this the 'redistribution. Obama had in mind?

Talk like this is not good

Talk like this is not good for harmony in America.  When you have politicians in Washington giving apologies for slavery (even though 600,000 of our relatives fought and died to STOP slavery), advocating reparations for slavery, granting amnesty to illegal aliens, affirmative action (reverse racism) etc. it is only going to create more racial tension.  How can it not?

"I would look at ways that

"I would look at ways that we can programatically and with new
policy, address these inequities and make concerted efforts to do
things that would make up for them and eliminate the disparities.
"

You want to address inequities and disparities?  Shoot Affirmative Action, cremate the body, and quit telling minorities they don't have to work as hard as whites.  Then we'll be headed in the right track.

I, oddly enough, agree with chrissy.........

Reparations do make sense. At least the economy will come out ahead. Instead of having all "people of color" in any position of power from Duh1 on down stealing the US blind with their payback criminal enterprises, just give them all a percentage of the economy. If the corruption stops, the United States will come out on the plus side of the ledger.

Edit: FO

Why do i have to pay?

Seeing that I had no blood or kin in this country until after slavery was abolished, why do I have to pay?

How about those african chiefs who sold blacks into slavery to europeans? Can we get them to pay up, too?

Some of my ancestors were slaves of the Moors. Can I get some muslims to pay me?

Everyone conquered everyone, let it go!

Agree.  All my ancestors

Agree.  All my ancestors arrived post Civil War.  Why should my taxes be used?

Heard an interesting

Heard an interesting statistic yesterday: over half of the blacks in this country are descended from folks who came here AFTER slavery ended, have no ties to slavery. Will these folks get reparations too?

Reparations make sense to

Reparations make sense to people that do not have any sense.  The American slaves were already slaves in Africa (with black owners).  Of course no one wants to talk about this origin of the problem because there is no money in Africa to shake down.  The truth is that their being brought to America afforded their ancestors a better life today.

No one wants to talk about the origin of any of our problems (READ: the Federal Government -- e.g. the housing bubble, health care, etc., etc.)

Reparations for slavery? Sweet, we'll all cash in!

"Yeah, I think reparations make sense."

Does that mean the Egyptians should give reparations to the Jews for their centuries of slavery?  Should the Italians (Rome wasn't built in a day, you know) give reparations to the Northern Europeans for their centuries of slavery as well?  Should the Africans give reparations to their fellow Africans for their slavery too? Should the Asians, South Americans, Hawaiians, Polynesians, and every other nationality and/or race know to man (with the possible exception of the Inuit.  I never heard of them keeping slaves) give reparations to the peoples they enslaved over the majority of Mankind's history, or is that something only Americans must do?

Make sense? Make what kind

Make sense? Make what kind of sense? Is there ONE alive, today, who was a slave in America? I think NOT.

All this is beside the point, would ANY black person in Ameria voluntarily choose to be "repatriated" to some socialist african shi'ite-hole? I'll personally pay for the first 100's plane tickets and will be willing to bet long odds that I can find funding for a lot of others, especially if we start with the obambis.

The whole idea of "reparations" sticks in my throat. I had an ancestor on my Father's side who jumped ship, where he was an indentured servant. Also ancestors on my Mother's side who were captured American Indians who were kept as slaves for many years. You'll never see me or mine crying out for 'reparations" this is totally anathema to our honor and ethics.

The ONLY "person" who would demand "rapeournations" from the country that has given their race so much would have no idea how to even spell either honor OR ethics.

Want to watch me stop

Want to watch me stop paying taxes?  Impose reparations.

Most(*) of the common arguments against reparations have been thrown out in this thread:

- Several hundred thousand whites died to abolish slavery (apparently white lives don't amount to much money)

- Arabs and black tribes in Africa captured most slaves initially

- Not all blacks are descended from slaves

- Not all whites are descended from slaveowners

- No one should be held responsible for the actions of their ancestors

*About the only one I see missing is that the vast majority of southern whites didn't even own slaves.

- Several hundred thousand whites died to abolish slavery (apparently white lives don't amount to much money)

My great-great grandfather fought for the Union in the Civil War and although he didn't die, he was held in Andersonville Prison for over a year.  Think I could at least get a partial discount for that?

Worse than reparations

Rep. Clyburn: "I would look at ways that we can programatically and with new policy, address these inequities and make concerted efforts to do things that would make up for them and eliminate the disparities."

This instantly reminded me of Robert Reich's words before a congressional panel.
"It seems to me that infrastructure spending is a very important and good way of stimulating the economy. The challenge will be to do it quickly, to find projects that can be done that will have a high social return, that also can be done with the greatest speed possible."

Economic redistribution is just too good for us - let' s make it race based to boot. This can't happen without serious damage to the nation but for liberals, consequences are just something you pass to the next generation.

Another Bill I Get Stuck Paying

Not only will I get stuck paying, but so will my children and grand children that aren't even born yet. Sure slavery was an atrocity nobody denies that, but I didnt own slaves, my kids dont own slaves and my grandchildren wont own slaves. Why should we have to pay for something we had nothing to do with? Obama was supposed to unite the people, hes doing just the opposite and this will only add to the divide. My question is because we know reparations are coming, I ask, when they are paid does that make us all even steven?

Most Roman slaves were

Most Roman slaves were European...wonder how many of us in this country are descended from those slaves?  Any way they can sue Italy for reparations?

Matter of fact, what about the millions of those whose ethnic classification is 'Slavic'?  Sounds like enough proof right there.

Perhaps they can be paid off in Fiat stock shares?

Another possibility is that African-Americans can sue those tribes in Africa that put them into slavery in the first place. Alex Haley was able to trace that back a few hundred years-shouldn't be too difficult.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

For redistributionists and hate mongers reparations make...

For redistributionists and hate mongers, reparations make perfect sense. What comes after reparations? Do you believe that that's the end of it? It will never end. Representative Clyburn's attempts at elimination of disparities should prove to be interesting and endless.

As usual, the Democrats

As usual, the Democrats never seem to know when enough is enough. Already they're wearing out their welcome by rasing taxes and spending that will negatively impact people a generation from now - many of which aren't even born yet.  Now the brazen liberal fools are  proposing to racially punish the majority of the white electorate for having had the sensitivity to see beyond race and  vote a black man to the highest office in the land. Oh pleeeeease let them try to push a reparations bill through congress!  Pretty please, Democrats? The GOP walks to victory and regains the majority again in 2010 amid the usual bitter, childish cries of racism by the left.  Not saying that the GOP majority in its current makeup will be the greatest thing we could hope for, but it's a helluva lot better than the cancerous tumor these Democrats are becoming on the American body politic.
