Letterman's Airball: Shoe Hurler Offered Fox News Show

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

It's said that to work, humor must contain a kernel of truth. No wonder David Letterman's effort to wring humor out of the shoe-throwing incident fell so flat. The Late Show host joked that Muntadhar al-Zeidi had been offered a show on . . . Fox News.  Letterman was playing off the report that al-Zeidi is reported to be hot-tempered and possess poor journalistic skills.

How lame was Letterman? After airing the "joke" on Morning Joe today, Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist gave it a double thumbs-down.

View video here.

DAVID LETTERMAN: How about that guy who heaved his shoes at the president? Turns out this guy was described as a hothead, he's a hothead.  And he's a guy, an Iraqi journalist, and they say he's a hothead with poor, poor journalistic.  Hothead. Poor journalistic skills.  Well, no surprise, today he was offered his own show on Fox News.

Back in the Morning Joe studio, Mika and Willie wanted their two-drink minimum refunded.

WILLIE GEIST: Eh-h-h-h.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Oh, come on.

WILLIE GEIST: Long way to go for that one.
Our readers can surely imagine much more appropriate gigs for the Hush Puppy Hurler . . .

Now if chuckles said...

he (this moron journalist) was offered a job at the New York Times or the Huffington Post (since they hate Bush and America) Letterman might have received some laughs because the joke would have been more appropriate.

But to say that some idiot who threw a shoe at our STILL commander and chief was offered a job at a cable station that leans mostly right is just plain stupid.

That joke died on arrival.

Dave hasn't been funny for several years. His schtick is getting old, as is he. Time to move on, Dave.

I agree; he has been

I agree; he has been sounding bitter for some time.

And as Rush always says, for a joke to be funny, there has to be a kernel of truth in it...this lame attempt lacks that.

But they just had to get in a swipe at Fox; wouldn't do to make fun of their "own" networks.

Ever notice

My wife watches Ellen (ugh). Ever notice how her entire act is a Letterman (from the old days) rip-off?

I know it's not right to do violence, but I am someone who has a lot of hatred for the left, especially D-list "comedians" like gaptooth Letterman.

What does the NY state government have to do with Bush, shoes or the free-market?

re: your tag

Cool tag--I suggest the opening should be "An educated" or "An intelligent" person... You just can't change the mind of a simpleton.

First, that's supposed to be

First, that's supposed to be a different paragraph, but the system was acting up.

As to your question. In an economic "downturn" (what is shaping into a crash), a tax increase is the last thing one would do ... that is if New York practiced sound economic principals to begin with. Bush has thrown his reasoning in with the Democrats and Rino's who caused the crash; via unsound principal, policy, law, what have you.

Now, if I'm supposed to keep my comments limited to silly jokes told by silly men, here it goes. There's nothing wrong with venting. Nor, is there anything wrong with Letterman calling himself a comedian. In all likelihood Letterman was making a joke about Fox's O'reilly. Who is known for getting angry and blowing steam.

correct...

One of the myths the gub-ment funded public education is preaching that business caused the Great Depression. Actually, it was the gub-ment who increased taxes by a factor of four and simoultaneously cut the money supply in half. NY is apparently in line for the tax hike. We'll see what meltdown he causes with that.

Separate paragraph; now it

Separate paragraph; now it makes sense, thanks.

Have you noticed many have come out with a statement about how capitalism isn't working but if you listen closely there is usually some type of disclaimer? They range from 'as it is being practiced now' to 'under the current leadership'. Capitalism works as long as government knows its place. Unfortunately the government is made up of flawed people with the same ego and comprehension problems that the Founding Fathers try to protect us from in the Constitution. It just took a couple hundred years, several wars, a massive decrease in education (of civilly important items) and media bent on socialism to bring us to the point where the population as a whole is smiling dumbly as we fall down into a socialistic hole.

ooooooooooo a TINGLE

That loser matthews is in the basement... what a joke.

Letterman is lame

I can't wait to see somebody (hopefully an American) chuck a shoe a BHO. I would enjoy the MSM's spin on that! BHO himself would probably call for a national day of mourning and require all states to lower the flag.

Hang it Letterman = liberal = loser.

Letterman does not approach being a comedian

He's not funny. He's not smart. He's not hip or cool or whatever the fad term is these days. He's a complete boor and bore. He's overpaid. Just compare him to Carson. Not even close. Or Jack Benny as a standup. Not even remotely in the same league. Just to name two. Of course there aren't many of today's so-called entertainers that measure up to the standards set by the many who have preceded them

Anyone who wastes his or her time watching this drivel needs to evaluate their priorities, IMO.

They say he's a hothead

They say he's a hothead with poor, poor journalistic.  Hothead. Poor journalistic skills. Well, no surprise, today he was offered his own show on Fox News.

This was obviously a shot at O'Reilly, whom Lettermann detests.

But as Geist said, "Eh-h-h...."

I can't help but think of a

I can't help but think of a time in my life when I actually found Letterman to be hilarious.  Of course, I was much younger, and fairly immature, and that probably explains most of it.   He was amusing before he got into the political realm, where he clearly does not belong.  I know high school kids who have a better political acumen than does Letterman.  I think it's time for this guy to ride quickly off into the sunset.

I never thought Letterman was funny

Can you imagine the late, great Johnny Carson doing bitter?

It happens.

When entertainers stray from, well, being entertaining, bad things happen.

As one example, let's all admit it: Keith Olbermann was must-see TV when he was on SportsCenter.  Tremendous talent.  Then, he got the urge to get all political without having the substance to do it right, and look at the travesty that resulted.  (I dread the day Kenny Mayne makes that same bad decision; let's hope he never does.)

Reaching back a few years: Remember Joe Piscopo?  Killer Sinatra impression, versatile sketch comic on SNL, and a seriously talented stand-up comedian.  Until he discovered the joys of over-the-top bodybuilding.  At that point, he put his interest far more into being buff than into being funny.  Hated that.  Killed his career.

The same thing's happening to Letterman.  He's become enamored with politics, and doesn't have the substance to properly navigate those waters.  He used to be funny; now, he's diverted all that talent away from being funny and mutated it into hubris.  Remember this quote?  "John, here's how it works: You don't come to see me, you don't come to see me, well, we might not see you on Inauguration Day."

Blonde, he used to be Carson's heir.  I mean, when Johnny actually writes jokes for your show, he must think highly of you, wouldn't you agree?

Unfortunately, Letterman showed us just how far 'round the bend he's gone.

To coin a phrase: Dave, here's how it works.  You don't abandon the politics, we might start seeing CSI reruns in your time slot.

In Addition

It's been my observation that once the comedians start believing their own hype, they cease to be funny.  I, too, am old enough to remember when Letterman was first breaking onto the national scene, and I remember he was funny. Then he became more and more successful - and began to believe that the world revolved around Dave - and he ceased to be funny.

Of course, I also realize that it is extremely difficult to be funny day after day - but he has a whole team of people who write jokes for him.  So I am chalking it up to Dave not being able to see beyond his own ego.  Sort of like AlGore.  Not funny!

Leftist comedians lose

Leftist comedians lose their "funny" when they venture into politics. Why?  Because leftist "thought" is totally devoid of any education or sense of humor.  It is ignorant, mean, base, and vengeful.

I think the only thing more pathetic than a leftist trying to do political humor is an AGING leftist trying to do political humor.  As Churchill said, "...a man over 40 who is not conservative has no brain."

In related news, Barack Obama reportedly drafted his first Executive Order, to be issued January 20th.  It calls for members of the press corps to remove their shoes at the door.

"Beauty is only skin deep, but liberal's to the bone." - me

Letterman

Letterman is a dip**** who was only mildly humorous in his "yoot" but hasn't been even worthy of a snicker for decades. He may not be the most bitter dink on Tv but he is keeping Chevy Chase up nights. In fact the whole late night talk show line up sux. Leno, Letterman and Conehead O'Brian all suck. Carson could work circles around all three on his worst night. Carson had "it" and none since have even come close on their best night. O'Brian may possibly be the silliest man on any network.

Switch the channel

Craig Ferguson can be hilarious. He hasn't delved into politics too often, but when he does he's as boring as the rest of them. Only comedians with the acumen of a Mort Sahl [until he got all caught up in the Kennedy assassination conspiracy theory] or a Will Durst can really do political humor
