Blago: Morning Shows Dance Around D-Word

If Rod Blagojevich were a Republican, what's the over-under on the number of times the network morning shows would have mentioned that fact in their coverage today?

But Blago is a Democrat.  So how often did Today, Good Morning America and the Early Show explicitly identify him as such during their opening half-hours today?  Not once.  The closest any came were references at Today and Early Show today to "Democratic politics" and one at GMA to "the Democratic Chicago machine."  Speaking of GMA, George Stephanopoulos, appearing there, put in the most embarrassingly sycophantish performance of the morning.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓
Today: In the opening segment, Meredith Vieira simply referred to "Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich."  Nor did the D-word ever cross Matt Lauer's lips. Lee Cowan, reporting from Chicago, never got around to identifying Blago by party.  Nor did Blago's Democrat-hood ever arise when Lauer kicked the criminal case around with Dan Abrams [who could use a Gillette razor for Chanukah.]  Chatting with Meredith Vieira, Chuck Todd came closest to identifying Blago's affiliation, saying "the problem that Obama has is that Chicago Democratic politics has a lot of concentric circles. There's some overlap here. It's possible one of Obama's advisors is going to be on tape."  Let's hope the NBC News political director doesn't get into hot water for violating the network blackout.

The Early Show: Maggie Rodriguez opened the show making reference simply to "the Illinois governor." Julie Chen was also too polite to use the D-word, speaking only of "Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich."  Dean Reynolds, reporting from Chicago, was similarly well-behaved.  In the following segment, Chip Reid did say "Barack Obama and Rod Blagojevich have both been leaders in Illinois Democratic politics for years."  But the CBS correspondent hastened to add "long-time observers say that's about as far as the connection goes."

Oh really?  At ABC's Political Punch, Jake Tapper writes [emphasis added]:

According to Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., Mr. Obama's incoming White House chief of staff, Emanuel, then-state senator Obama, a third Blagojevich aide, and Blagojevich's campaign co-chair, David Wilhelm, were the top strategists of Blagojevich's 2002 gubernatorial victory.
None of the nets mentioned that close connection.

Good Morning America:  None of the anchors breathed the D-word, but reporter Jim Avila did speak of "a president-elect and a governor with roots in the Chicago Democratic machine." George Stephanopoulos went out of his way to downplay the Obama-Blago connection.  Tape was rolled of Obama correcting himself in mid-sentence saying "I had no contact with the governor or his office. And so we, I, was not aware of what was happening." When Diane Sawyer asked about the switch in pronouns, Steph gave the most benign possible explanation for Obama's sleight of tongue:
I think that's because he can't be sure that no one connected to him in any way spoke to Blagojevich or any emissaries of Blagojevich.

Wouldn't another explanation be that Obama is dead sure that someone connected with him did speak with Blago or his minions? But that would have so impolite to suggest. For complete coverage of the Sawyer-Steph exchange, see Scott Whitlock's item here.

Let's summarize: One "Chicago Democratic politics" at Today.  One "Illinois Democratic politics" at the Early Show.  One "Democratic Chicago machine" at GMA.  But not once did we hear, or see in a graphic, the classic formulation "Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich."

I ask: had the political tables been turned, how often and how prominently would the nets have explicitly mentioned the party affiliation of a Republican caught in a comparable mess?

Morning Joe Doesn't Mess Around

It was a different story over at Morning Joe, where throughout today's show Joe Scarborough was all over the media double standard.  In the opening segment he cited Tucker Carlson's description of the sycophantic media having a 9th-grade schoolboy crush on Obama as it proclaims about the Blago matter: "nothing to see here. Move along."

And a bit later:

Here's the deal. If Karl Rove had said George Bush has never talked to 'x' then -- or George Bush talked to 'x' and denies it, people would be screaming and yelling from the top of this building and other every media building in the nation. It's the same thing with Rahm Emanuel, chief of staff, saying Barack Obama ran Rod Blagojevich's campaign along with him in 2002. Then come back and deny it

Update: Is Obama Sure He Never Met With Blago On Senate Seat?

Have a look at this article from November 11, 2008 [emphasis added; h/t reader Ron M.]:

Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.

Obama met with Governor Rod Blagojevich earlier this week to discuss it.

In this case, you would have

In this case, you would have to be brain dead not to realize Blago is a Democrat just by his connection with Obama. Of course, that doesn't excuse the Old Media's lack of party affiliation here or any other time when a Democrat is caught in scandal.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

I think you are right, most

I think you are right, most people know Blago is a dem., but the media is not going to emphasize the point.  I have been listening to some of the morning shows, and they are doing everything possible to  downplay any connection to Obama.  To Joe Scarborough's credit he did suggest that Obama had to know Blago was corrupt when Obama campaigned for him in 2006.

The local (Milwaukee) paper

The local (Milwaukee) paper ran quite a lot of material on the Ill gov - we cheeseheads have enjoyed watching Chicago/Springfield politics ever since the first Mayor Daly got all those dead folks to vote for JFK.  They also ran a story about how many democrats are being dogged by scandals, of course when you went to the story is was placed right next to an update on Sen Craig and his shoe caper.

The Axelrod retraction goes on the "under the bus" list.  Wright, Ayers, Rezco, and now Axelrod.

Milwaukee

Wow - there is still someone reading the Milwaukee Urinal. I switched to the Waukesha Freeman years ago.

I figured out that he was a

I figured out that he was a Democrat by the lack of party affiliation in the stories.  I commented yesterday that the only mention I found in the first 10 stories of my Google search had it in about the 10th paragraph, and then they made sure it was paired with a Republican.

My guess on the over/under is 100%  Not only would it be included, but the stories would be worded so that it would be the first word in every story (just to make sure no one missed it):

Republican governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested...

And regarding the word-switch...one has to remember that sometimes Obama has no idea what his staffers are saying, and they have a "hair trigger"

I Wonder..........

.........when the MSM will come to the conclusion ~ if ever ~ that if they presented the news as it should be (objectively) they might actually be able to attract viewers.

Remember Mark....

It's their job now to help this administration succeed. That includes neutralizing his bad press. The story isn't really about a corrupt Democrat governor being arrested. The real story is about just how much Barack Obama barely knew the guy and in case you didn't get that part Steffie and his gang will be sure to point that out to you.

Hey Mark,I'll do you one better.

Not only did Barack have nothing to do with Blagojevich he actually was responsible for taking him down according to the NYT's

http://www.nytimes.c...

In a sequence of events that neatly captures the contradictions of Barack Obama’s rise through Illinois
politics, a phone call he made three months ago to urge passage of a
state ethics bill indirectly contributed to the downfall of a fellow
Democrat he twice supported, Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich.

It was really Barack Obama who was taking on the corruption of Chicago politics. What a guy huh....?

Wow.  He saw this coming

Wow.  He saw this coming three months ago.  Amazing!!

There is nothing he can't do!!

Yes...

"

Wow.  He saw this coming three months ago.  Amazing!!

There is nothing he can't do!!"

Barack Obama was the one who led the charge against Chicago corruption and I'm sure that tonight the three networks will make sure we all know that.

→ That's not all

Wait for the rumors that Rahm Emanuel started this ball rolling.

Or better yet, a righteously incensed Jesse Jackson Junior spoke up after being approached for a bribe.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

There's a story out there

There's a story out there that Rahm Emmanuel may have been the tipster that fingered Blagojevich.  If that is true, it actually indicates that Obama, or his advisors, were in contact and discussing the appointment with Rod.  Otherwise, how did they know this was going on?  Here's a quote from the FBI affidavit:

"Mr Blagojevich also allegedly suggested that Mr Obama could help to get his wife on to lucrative corporate boards. Concerned that Mr Obama did not want to pay to get his favoured candidate into the Senate, Mr Blagojevich allegedly threatened to keep the Senate seat or give it to someone who could offer him cash up front."

Was Obama acting to ensure justice was done or to remove someone that was too stubborn or greedy to go along with what he wanted?  Does anyone else out there find it kind of unbelieveable that you could vacate an office, but not be curious about who was going to fill your seat when the person who was going to make the appointment was someone that you had campaigned for twice, had endorsed you for your senate bid, etc?  What about the person getting the appointment being someone you would have to work with for the next four years?

And so the spin begins.

And so the spin begins.

All it took was a simple phone call.

Years of investigation couldn't bring the guy down and then the Messiahed One intervened and all was healed.

Like John Kerry

Barack brought him down after he built him up.  Obama supported him in the 2006 election and then hired David Axelrod who worked for Blagojevich, aka, Helmet Head, Blago, Mod Rod.  Everyone in Illinois Machine Politics is dirty.  It is the modern Tammany Hall.

Rod's corruption

Rod's corruption investigation has been going on for five years.  One of the principle figure in the investigation, Tony Rezko, sold Obama the house he now lives or part of the lot it sits on or both, at a loss.  When you look at the greed these people displayed, why would one of them do something that cost him money?  Simple answer, he got something for it that wasn't money, but would become money in the future.  Rezko raised campaign money for both Blago and Obama.  Rahm Emmanuel ran for the seat Rod vacated in the House when he decided to run for governor.  Rahm is now Obama's chief of staff.  One of the players in the corruption scheme that centers around Rod was Stuart Levine.  Levine was indicted, along with another person, a Chicago alderman named Ed Vrdolyak, for a scheme to get kickbacks from land developers.  The kickbacks were to be channelled via Rezko into Rod's campaign funds.  One of the people involved in the deals with the developers was a man named John Singer.  John Singer was Emmanuel's campaign treasurer.  You need a scorecard to keep all these guys straight, but in Chicao politics, they are all connected and they are all playing on the same team.  Obama was a major player.  If there were real reporters digging into this, the story would be very interesting.

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

If there were real

If there were real reporters digging into this, the story would be very interesting.

If he were a republican we'd have that story.  There would be so many journalists in Chicago right now there wouldn't be enough hotel rooms to house them all.

I think they are all

I think they are all terrified that if they flip over the wrong rock. it might fly up and dent the golden child's image, or worse, crack open the whole facade.

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

Yes terrified

They're so terrified of that, that they won't even look!

That's my story and I'm sticking it!

At this point whenever the MSM omits party affiliation I know immediately who's flock ... call it the unspoken truth (or the flock of D-gulls).

When WTF Blitzer claimed that we "hear" more reports of corruption from R's than of D's, it goes to prove that perception by omission is the "real" story.

"A man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with an argument." Hilmar von Campe

What I find remarkable and

What I find remarkable and actually laughable is how many pundits are ready to hold off judgement of Blago.  It's hilarious how many people just on Morning Joe alone were willing to give Blago the benefit of the doubt and kept repeating that he's innocent until proven guilty.

Republicans would have NEVER received such courtesy.

I wonder what would happen

I wonder what would happen if the tapes show he fired a state trooper?

He has most of them po'd at

He has most of them po'd at him.  The Illinois State Police provide the security for Rod.  He put in cuts and increased the hours that officers would have to work without pay or benefits, among other things.  The result was a system where officers sought reduction in grade back to the sergeant level.

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

Ask yourself

The media loves to present themselves as the watchdogs of democracy, eager to expose corruption and scandal. They all want to be Woodward and Bernstein, burrowing past the front doors, finding and revealing evidence. The myth is how they discover something wrong and following its connections, asking "inconvenient" questions along the way.

When I read the descriptions above, I have to ask myself:  do any of these people seem eager to pursue this story? Seriously, when you observe the coverage of this story, are there any reporters of commentators who have any passion at all?

The barking watchdogs have become turtles, desperately trying to get back into their shells. Apparently, when the Obama campaign assures the media that there's "nothing there," that's good enough for the media.

And we can expect Stage Two to begin any day now. Very soon, the media will argue that Republicans do it too, and that scandals aren't restricted to just Democrats. Then they'll try to focus attention as far away from Chicago as they can. (If they can get a story about corruption in New Zealand, they'll do it.) The media will find great passion in showing how Republicans are just as corruptible ... a passion they never display in finding Democrat counterparts when Republicans are accused.

Their method is predictable.

To your point KC

Larry Craig was brought up today on Morning Joe.

Reflex

It's like a doctor tapping the knee, and the reflex causes a kick, isn't it?

Want proof?

Check out Mark's post.

Can you hear the editors screaming at their reporters, "Quick! Find something that can 'balance' this Democrat scandal! Anything! If a republican anywhere knows anyone under investigation, we need to find it immediately!"

So dangerous!

I watched Morning Joe this morning and Fox last night and all the media talent on the shows just repeated what all of us already know from the charging documents and tape transcripts.  It's truly amazing that with the thousands of media reporters, researchers, producers and on-air talent available, I'll bet this event will not spark one single investigative report into the cesspool of Illinois politics.  FOLLOW THE MONEY you lazy, lazy people!

Are there absolutely no "honest brokers" out there anymore? Does everyone in journalism really believe they are just publicists and public relations hacks?

Comparisons

Any Republican scandal immediately results in the MSM connecting dots all the way up to the top.  Any Democratic scandal immediately results in the MSM avoiding mention of the party and trying to prove or give the impression of no other party involvement. Look at what this guy was asking for in return for the favor- a non-profit, an ambassodorship, power, money...these things are never investigated by the press unless it is in the hands of a conservative they dont like but they are clearly tools of the corrupt political community.  Too bad the press only gives a pass to the liberals that employ them.

I'm taking bets on how long

I'm taking bets on how long it's going to take to worm this story into "IT'S BUSH'S FAULT!"....

Bush's fault

some leftist blogs are concerned the wiretaps might have been illegal.  aka.  Its Bush's fault :)

"part of what I'm hoping to introduce as the next president is a new ethic of [government enforced] responsibility" - B. Obama

quick question for libs

How many times have lefties told us here not to get upset about a missing party label for a mayor or city councilman? Now when it comes to politicians with larger influence.....

Let's see, the sitting governor of a large state was using his party connections to illegally auction off a place of power in our federal government, and the newly elected president has given suspicious statements about his own involvement. ABC runs one story about Obama's campaign contradicting him, Obama quickly covers it up, and the rest of the media agree to moveon.org

Are we supposed to forget all about 2000 when the media accused Jeb Bush and Kathleen Harris of stealing the election in the name of party loyalty? Should we forget their musing over how many Republicans secretly knew about Mark Foley? Are now forgetting the hundreds of times they'd talked about the "fallout" within the Republican party and the "tarnish" now put upon the GOP brand because of an isolated sexual misconduct case?

Now we have a scandal with far-reaching implications and evidence coming out that the Democrat party overlooked Blago's corruption for years....and the media half heartedly covers it with zero interest in how many Democrats were involved.

So come on back here lefties and explain how Blago's party is none of our business.

I'm a typical white person.

Funny enough, Hannity

Funny enough, Hannity played Axelrod's interview at ABC, where he said a few weeks ago that Obama was talking with the governor AND his office in reference to filling his now-vacant seat.

Should be politics as usual. However, right when this comes out, Obama states that he has not spoken to the governor or his office at all. Wait a minute, when a senator/legislator vacates the seat for whatever reason, the governor is at least notified as it may ask the governor, the party, and/or requiring a special run-off election. Again, him speaking to the governor is business as usual.

That alone, makes me have a feeling Obama knew about these shennanigans in advance. I can't say so far that he orchestrated it, but I'm sure he "looked the other way." In dirty politics like Chicago, there is no way you would NOT KNOW what your party is doing because everyone is privy to it! Although, I am inclined to think that the Republicans are slightly less nasty than the Dems here, considering IL is a Democrat state and has been for some time.

I'm just suprised that Dick Turban threw Bloggy (my pet name) under the bus and that this story even came out.

“You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.” ~ Winston Churchill

We, I, didn't know what was

In a link at Yahoo home page the AP quotes Obama but they left out the gaff. "We" was not in the quote. Who knew?

Morning Joe

Thank You, Joe.

You are correct and everyone knows it.  Give the media enough rope and they will hang themselves....just as the NYTimes, Chicago Tribune, and others have done - this week alone.  They have lost their credibility...which is their most fundamental asset.  And it was their choice to risk it.

a lot of attention has been put on wall streets choice to layer into their operations lots of Risk (via derivatives).  But the management of all of these papers did the same thing...maybe worse.  They "risked" their fundamental asset - their credibility - to further their political fortunes...and have since lost much of it.  and it shows in both consumer opinion and subsequent financial results.

But unlike the wall street, credibility isnt something that easily regenerates (like a cash infusion can do for wall st)...at the end of the day, they are still full of it.  so their failure to manage reputational and subsequent financial risk may be even more damning than wall street's failures to manage financial risk.

CNN ties Blago to Bush

After discussing the charges against him and painting Blago as a "lone wolf" ...the CNN newsbabe promos the next segment where they will talk about corruption in Chigago politics: not with a picture of Blago and Obama, but with a picture of George Bush and Blago.

There's got to be a screen cap of this somewhere.

not with a picture of Blago

not with a picture of Blago and Obama, but with a picture of George Bush and Blago.

That takes the cake.  Can CNN get any worse?

Found: Photo of Bush and Blago (2003)

I had to search through over 300 images on Google Image Search to find one photo of Bush with Blago.

And here he is the President surrounded by the usual suspects...circa a 2003 visit to Chicago.

http://images.google...

I can see how CNN would make the connection.

Now try the same search for images of Obama and Blago...wow there are 8 on the first page.

CNN...working overtime to find new ways to trash Bush.

In Illinois, you see a

In Illinois, you see a portent of things to come for America.  A government totally controlled by Democrats, with a culture of corruption bred from the arrogance seeded by that control.  Rod was not held in check by the Democrat majority in either the House or Senate.  Will we see the same for Obama in the White House.  The press is already calling for him to assume the mantle of godhood.  Where will his checks and balances come from?  He's arose from the same source that produced Blagojevich.  He's surrounded himself with officials from one of the most corrupt presidencies in modern times.

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

Chicago Tribune and Jesse Jackson Jr.

It appears the Chicago Tribune went public on December 5th with the Blagojevich story to protect someone else. With Candidate Five on the verge of being exposed it would seem necessary to shut down the investigation as soon as possible. From what I’m reading, at least in several papers in south Texas, is that Jesse Jackson, Jr. could be Candidate Five. Given the relationship between the Democrat Party and the Chicago Tribune and the Jackson’s this connection makes sense.

Rush and his music

I was just listening to Rush’s Love Client No. 9 referring to Eliot Spitzer’s prostitution scandal. Surely there is a new tune in the works with the word Jackson(s) included in the title.

Its Sad...

Its a sad sorry state of affairs that the MSM is in. I had to Google/Wiki this clown to definitively nail down his party affiliation, even though I knew it was (D) since it was absent from every news story I read.
