Given the flap that ensued when he famously told Joe the Plumber that he wanted to "spread the wealth," I figured Barack Obama wouldn't be making such a suggestion again anytime soon. I figured wrong.
Pres.-elect Obama to Tom Brokaw on today's Meet The Press:
I think the important principle, because sometimes when we start talking about taxes, and I say I want a more balanced tax code, people think, well, that's class warfare. No. It turns out that our economy grows best when the benefits of the economy are most widely spread. And that has been true historically.
Got that, you greedy rich guys? Higher taxes are good for you. Paging Joe the Plumber!
Will the MSM pick up on Obama's renewed call to redistribute income via government fiat?

Sun, 12/07/2008 - 11:06 ET by candanceYou didn't actually expect Obama to regret saying what he said to Joe, did you? Joe is an unlicensed plumber whose name is really Sam - it doesn't matter what Obama actually said to him!
From now on when the public hears "spread the wealth" they won't think "gosh they want to tax more of my money" they'll immediately think "wow that Joe the Plumber was a maroon."
The MSM did a real good job of patching that for Obama.

The fact that calls that the important principle is truly frightening.
Anyone who thinks he is not a socialist isn't really listening to him.
And that has been true historically.
Where is the proof of that?

Sun, 12/07/2008 - 11:24 ET by littlemissmuffinHere's a plan:
Let the government take everyone's money up to and including the POTUS. Give each household $50,000 per year to live on. No more welfare, food stamps, etc, etc. No more taxes.
Can you just imagine what the Senators, Representatives, and the Hollywood types would say about this? But, that would truly be "spreading the wealth around."

Sun, 12/07/2008 - 11:14 ET by robert108His statement is just economically untrue. Income discrepancy creates incentive to be more productive; if the govt mandates equal outcomes, there is no incentive to improve oneself. Why get a college education, if it doesn't bring you a higher income? Education is very expensive, for all of us, and the only thing that justifies that cost is the benefit of increased income. If you get the same outcome no matter what your achievements, why strive at all? Just take what the govt gives you and do the minimum required. This is worse than socialism; it's straight out Marxism.

...fortunately, even lefty of lefties, Obama didnt bite....stating that raising taxes in this environment isnt the smart thing to do. (perhaps there is "hope" for him, afterall]

Wow, a flat tax!!
What could be more balanced tax code then.. that. Every one pays the same!!!!
Obama, I sorry I ever questioned you! You are the ONE! You are the force that will put the universe back together again, I feel so bad for ever doubting you. You are change and hope. Look I see a unicorn in my back yard, and he has: I love Obama written on him!!
Whaaa? What do you mean, that is not what he means when he said a balanced tax code?
I go back in my mind to math class..
2+2=4balanced right?
Things weighing the same, and balanced, right??
Obama balance: 0+0+0+4=4..
I think that is that new liberal math… Where nothing adds up.. except somehow we pay more..

Sun, 12/07/2008 - 11:30 ET by c5thenThe US economy grew the most before there was any income tax (prior to 1916). People had an incentive to incrementally and progressiely increase their income because they got to keep it all. Once you institute a "progressive" income tax system, it discourages incremental increases becasue once you shift brackets, you actually get to keep less of your income even though you are doing better. It encourages "under the table" deals and "off book" jobs. The progressive income tax created the black-market job system that is the life-blood of the construction industry, especially the home building segment.

Sun, 12/07/2008 - 11:31 ET by badcleatsThe man has had a Marxist indoctrination his whole life. When he was met on that fatefull day by Joe the plumber, and answered him by saying spread the wealth, it was his natural instincts speaking. Fore warned is forearmed.......you got to know where this guy is coming from, and take to heart to what he says, to be prepared. He has the power now......all the mind numbed adorers voted him to office, and he is what he is. For the sake of our country's future, I hope he will be cutailed by hopefully, cooler heads in the legislaters, but we can't count on that. This grandiose idea of gathering up people and putting them to work building infrastructure.....what's he gonna tell the unions? You gonna move people in blocs to go here and there? Sun, 12/07/2008 - 11:34 ET by Jack BauerOh -- so now taxation is a "benefit"? Funny, but isn't tax usually classed as an involuntary "cost" to your wallet?
Also "balance" now means that some groups pay disproportionately more in percentage terms?
Funny, but in actual usage that would be "unbalanced." You know, like a 300 lb man on one end of a see-saw; and a 150 lb man on the other.
But of course, I'm not a "scholar" like Obama, so what do I know about English usage?
First off, I think this
Sun, 12/07/2008 - 13:07 ET by dmntd1First off, I think this comment of Sen Obama (he's STILL not Pres Elect until the Electoral College meets!) is rather hypocritical:
While saying that, he attempts to steal the benefits of our economy from those that produce, the so-called-rich, and give to those that don't. Effectively punishing success, while rewarding failure.
Secondly, as the pres of a sub-s corp, my clients have been overjoyed that I've been able to LOWER my prices, due to the falling gas prices. This saves them, combined, in excess of $1,000 per year. My prices were geared towards $3/gal, and I ate the cost when it hit $4+/gal. Driving 4000 miles per month, that was costing me quite a bit, but keeping my clients happy was key to keeping my clients.
As usually happens, government interference disrupts the free market. If they artificially raise the prices of gas to $4/gal, my prices will go up. Even though they would only go up to the nearest of my competitors, higher costs result in less work.

This share the wealth stuff scares me. Liberals want to share everyone's wealth but their own, and higher taxes are the most effective way. Most of their voter base doesn't pay taxes so there will be minimal opposition to the increases that will destroy the economy in the long run.
I agree. Never saw a liberal give away his/her own money!

His BS in horticulture isn't doing him any good right now. I cried all day yesterday. Hopefully these wacked out liberals won't be able to screw up the military. I am glad he will be joining/taking the oath before that horrible man desecrates a Bible and the Constitution in January.
BTW, my husband is from Kansas and I always enjoy seeing the huge expanse of the Mississippi on the way to visit his family. Rivers just don't come anywhere NEAR that big around here.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Sun, 12/07/2008 - 19:42 ET by criticalthinking"our economy grows best when the benefits of the economy are most widely spread."
I don't know...this seems to hold water...if more people have money, they will by more stuff, no? and the economy will flow. May be a bit utopian, but it is still definalty capitolistic, and has nothing to do with wealth distribution. remember, the trickle down effect was supposed to accomplish pricesly this statement. only problem was nothing ever trickled down.
Sure it holds water...
Sun, 12/07/2008 - 21:32 ET by JPR1...so does a toilet.
The problem with SociObamas thinking is the inherently unfair distribution of "benefits".
You see a capitalistic economy doesn't promise "benefits". Get an insurance policy of some kind if you want benefits. Capitalism offers one an opportunity to establish ones own security.
Trickle down works just fine as long as the folks at the bottom make wise decisions using what trickles down. Someone sits around all day watching a pos tv, then stops by Wal Mart and sees the 45" plasma and thinks "Damn I should have one of those!" Then stops on the way home and buys $20 worth of beer and $20 worth of lottery tickets. Poor decisions all, tv included.
