Noonan: Mischievous Media Wants to Make Palin Face of GOP

Why does Sarah Palin continue to receive so much media coverage?  Peggy Noonan has a theory.  The Wall Street Journal columnist believes the MSM is up to what she considers "mischief": attempting to make Sarah Palin the face of the Republican party.

Noonan propounded her premise during an appearance today on Morning Joe.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

PEGGY NOONAN: Look, I think the headline with Mrs. Palin, let me throw out this idea: she will never not be with us, she will be covered regularly between now and 2012.  There are a number of reasons for this. She is an interesting personality; her story was one that helped to fill the essence of the 2008 campaign.

But also, I happen to think the media is up to a bit of mischief here.  I think the media wants to take Sarah Palin and make her, subliminally, the face of the Republican party. They want to make her: this is what Republicans are, the face of the party, the leader of the party, because it amuses them to do that.

WILLIE GEIST: Isn't that due in part that there's not really another compelling face at the moment to make [the face] of the Republican party?

NOONAN: Well, at the moment, she is at the moment, there are still emanations and tendrils of her fabulous celebrity in 2008, and so of course that's going on.  But I still think the media is playing a little game there.

There are, of course, many Republicans who would be pleased to have Sarah Palin as the face of the party.  But given Noonan's less-than-flattering candid comments about Palin, it's clear the former Reagan speechwriter believes the MSM is doing the GOP no favors by making the former VP candidate its nominal leader.

Note: Some evidence in support of Noonan's theory comes from Keith Olbermann. In this video at Olbermann Watch, the Countdown host tells Martha Stewart "I'm donating as much money as I can to her campaign, just to keep her in my newscast every night."  Bonus: Olbermann Watch catches Keith in an apparent fib as to when he saw the video of Palin's pardon of the Thanksgiving turkey.

Could sure do without her being the face, right Peggy?

I have no use for these Upper East Side Republicans anymore. They are killing us.

Why can't we adopt the Pawlenty approach and have more Sam's Clubbers that country clubbers?

Just what in the world is so wrong with that?

Face-off

Peg=old face

Palin=New face

I like the new face.

Mom

Where's the beef.

Peggy is not always wrong.  It is up to Sarah Palin to stay in the spotlight in a positive way.  I know that will be hard because the press will try to bring her down but Peggy is right, the press thinks Sarah Palin in weak right now.  Plus, whatever keeps her in the news is fine with me.

I know that will be hard

I know that will be hard because the press will try to bring her down but Peggy is right, the press thinks Sarah Palin in weak right now.

More importantly, the Old Media know Palin could be a force in 2012. They saw the much bigger crowds for her than McCain and are very scared. She also won't be marginalized like Romney wrongly was for his religion among Republicans either.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

What I am hoping is that

What I am hoping is that regardless of why the press brings her up, they will make the mistake of giving her conservative principles airtime.

Hopefully they will make the mistake of thinking that speaking of these principles (Life, taxation, defense policy) will make Palin look like a hick and thus reduce her cred with the public.  But in fact these principles will resonate with the public.

THe thing I fear is a series of "Baking shows" on daytime TV (Oprah, GMA, etc) where she is not allowed to showcase these principles but rather just becomes a pretty face..

THe thing I fear is a series of "Baking shows" on daytime TV (Oprah, GMA, etc) where she is not allowed to showcase these principles but rather just becomes a pretty face..

I agree. That would be political stupidity.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

The fact that the MSM hate

The fact that the MSM hate her, and the East Coast resnoblicans disrespect her is exactly why she should be the face of the party - much moreso than losers like McCain and RINOs like Schwartzen-burgermeister or Tim "Smoking Ban" Pawlenty...

I am not sure what Noonan

I am not sure what Noonan has against Palin, possibly a simple hatred for the pretty young girl in school or equally silly an anger of attention for the non-selected by the chattering class of DC.  I have noted in the past that the "Well educated" chattering classes from the beltway take actual offense when someone not of their ilk is presented for leadership positions.  TO them it is a repudiation of THEM as our defacto leaders - regardless of their failed efforts at leadership (Witness John McCain as the nominee).

But the real reason Palin is the focal point is that finally someone has arrived on the scene who espouses the conservative first principals.  After all, the only reason I voted in this past election was because conservative Palin was on the ticket.  And this makes the chattering classes nervous for she is not one of their own in DC social circles.

I would not have voted for just McCain alone, after all he is my states senior senator.  (Sadly, he jsut announced that he is running again for senate.  I guess I will be forced to vote for the liberal who they run against him to just put a silver knife through him.

Hi BD... You can be sure

Hi BD...

You can be sure McC is glad Napolitano is out of the way now.

Btw...Amnesty here we come.

I don't know if you know this, but Sarah agrees with this, I am talking about after the election, I heard three different interviews after the election, she isn't just agreeing with McC now...no matter now, it is going to be a done deal, she won't have to worry about it.

I said all along I wanted to know how she felt about this..never heard until like a few days before, and of course afterwards...which really irked me.

I voted the ticket because of her, wht the msm was doing to her, and my fear of the O.

Well it is what it is...this is one time I think Peggy is making a fair point with what the msm does, and their reasons behind it...we have four years yet, we shall see, all I know is I want a real conservative, I almost voted for Balwin, but the numbers here even in Mt. were to close to not vote for the R ticket.

This is remarkable. Peggy

This is remarkable. Peggy Noonan, a highly respected conservative thinker is critical of Sarah Palin and you conclude that there must be something wrong with Peggy Noonan. I suppose you would say the same of David Brookes, Christopher Buckley, Kathleen Parker, Colin Powell, Scott McClellan, George Will and Ken Dubenstein. Yes, they must all be terribly uninformed and naive. Palin doesn't have politically conservative principles at all. She's a social conservative.

Please God no.  If Palin is

Please God no.  If Palin is the future of the party, then there is no party.  The RINO's lost big time this year and hopefully a new crop of conservatives, like Utah's Caffetz, will lead the party.  Palin is a train wreck.  I respect her values and "down to earth" appeal, but she is too extreme in regards to the religious right for the future of the party.

I respect her values and "down to earth" appeal, but she is too extreme in regards to the religious right for the future of the party.

How is Palin is any more "extreme" than Reagan was publicly?

I'm not a fundamentalist Christian. However, this Roman Catholic has yet to see anything extreme about her religion.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

Concur. As a Roman Catholic

Concur. As a Roman Catholic I see nothing weirder of her religious views than the Catholicism of my youth in church basements on CCD nights.

It seems...

...That whenever someone unashamedly announces their belief in Christianity, that is the "Extreme" trigger.

I am not ashamed of my faith, nor am I ashamed to be fiscally conservative and libertarian in many other areas.  I can be persuaded with intelligent, logical argument and give short shrift to hysteria, sycophancy and the blathering of the MSM.

I watch Sarah with interest, and hope.  A conservative, Christian politician, honestly hewing to smaller government, lower taxes, secure borders and free trade could even get me to contribute when the next election cycle comes around.

Otherwise... Meh!  Go hang, RINOs.

Black liberation theology,

Black liberation theology, with its fusion of black nationalism and Marxism, is extreme. Look what that combination is doing in Zimbabwe.  Sarah is an American Christian.  Nothing extreme about her.

Good morning BD

How right you are. Everyone following the ten commandments and refusing to approve of killing babies are considered to be extreme right-wing religious nuts.

I was born and raised Roman Catholic, then for years attended pentecostal churches. I am now back in the Catholic church. Some man-made doctrines are different but the core beliefs are the same.

We have to be careful because the same divide and conquer strategy of the left-wing extremists is being used against us in religion, race, class, education, and all other aspects of society with some degree of success.

Catholic with a capitol C

what i was really pissed about was the lack of pulpit outrage about not only those (lower case) catholic politicians who vote for abortion and gay rights but also the percentage of 'good' Catholics who voted for nobama and his fellow abortionists .. the politicians who vote pro-abortion should be excommunicated forthwith and all (c)atholics who voted for them should be told to withhold themselves from communion .. we're not talking about missing a Holy Day fast or service here, we're talking about the intentional killing of the innocent unborn .. an abortion 'clinic' is akin to a suicide bomber where the bomber lives free but all the victims die ..

never look a gift skunk in the tail

Confused....

How exactly is she extreme in terms of the "religious right".

Please clarify.

Her views on abortion.

Her views on abortion.  Abortion is a touchy subject and should not be addressed by the party of less government.  The Republican party is going down the Democrat path of larger government and trying to take more control of everything, banks, mortgage lenders, car manufacturers etc.  I want the government out of our lives, and that includes the issue of abortion.  Let the voters decide, by state, what they want on this issue, not the federal government.  It is the same with gay marriage.  Do we need a constitutional definition of marriage or can the states decide?

Abortion is touchy so we

Abortion is touchy so we should not discuss this?

So is murder, I guess we should srping Charlie Manson.....

Your position comes forth from the notion that we must not draw lanes between us and our opposition in bold lines, this is what got us McCain and certain defeat.

I say trumpet conservatism in all forms from the rooftops.  Do not hide the arguments, scream em.

The Righter the Better

& amen, might as well not even go to the dance without a date that counts and for me, the righter the better.

Abortion is not an issue

Abortion is not an issue that needs to be addressed nearly as much as national security, fiscal responsibility, border security, national debt, taxes etc.  it is not the governments place to dictate family values.  Republicans bring up abortion and are losing that battle.  We need to leave that one behind and focus on what the government is supposed to do.  I do not support abortion, but that is my opinion and it is up to the states to decide whether to make laws regarding it.  It needs to be left off of the federal platform.  We bring it up and we, as a party, still do not have a consensus on it.  Should it be banned in all cases or should there be some exceptions.  If there are exceptions, why are those lives deemed less valuable?  If we are pro-life, how can we support the death penalty?  And so on.

What country on this earth

What country on this earth will last long when it accepts ABORTION (the murder of the unborn) as a right? It is God who sets up nations and tears them down. All our efforts at security are worthless if we are not doing God's will. What governments are suppose to do is protect the borders from evil without AND punish evil within. Murdering babies is evil. But I guess my position is extreme, isn't it?

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:31

Right on target, Ben

When we as a nation officially sanction abortion we are giving the Enemy a case against us, so to speak. The cries of 40 million unborn babies make quite a powerful statement. How can 'God bless America' under these circumstances? How can we expect Him to protect us from our enemies when we make ourselves His enemy by sanctioning baby murder?
If anyone ever makes a comparison between infanticide and capital punishment to my face he/she is getting punched, hard.
In order to be pro-choice, one must first be born. Ah, the irony.

Jay, I'm not a 100% against

Jay, I'm not a 100% against every form of abortion person, but I've watched the movement of my children in sonograms well below an age below the legal limit for abortion, ie. the first trimester and I ask anyone to do that and tell me when life begins.  To my point: you said, " If we are pro-life, how can we support the death penalty?  And so on."

If you are pro-choice, how do you oppose the death penalty?  It's allright to kill unborn children, but some pervert who slaughters a whole family should be allowed to live the rest of their life and sometimes go free.

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

Simple solution.

I'm pro-life and I'm against the death penalty.  I'm for killing to defend yourself and your family.  As much as I dislike wars, I do understand that it's a necessary evil sometimes but they should be conducted with some sort of "etiquette".

prolife and the death penalty

abortion is killing the unborn innocent child .. the death penalty is the ultimate STATE sanction for crimes against humanity .. abortion is between the doctor (or whatever) and the mother to (not) be .. 2 hours and a shower and it's all over .. the death penalty requires a trial, a judge, a jury, a conviction and sentencing .. then endless appeals .. now, isn't that pretty simple ? ..

never look a gift skunk in the tail

Death Penalty doesn't work

Death penalty doesn't deter crimes.  It just makes sure that particular criminal can no longer commit crimes.  There is also a chance that someone is innocent of said crime and is put to death.  Personally, I think we should bring back the chain gang or work camps in the middle of the desert for those folks.  Why kill cheap labor?

Nonsense. Last year a study

Nonsense.

Last year a study was released that showed that when a death penalty was speedily carried out, the number of violent crimes in the immediate area concerned did indeed drop measureably.

Of course, this is negatred by the fact that some neighborhoods (Texas Comes to mind) achieves this benefit early and does not gain from a second event per period.

Others, (Massachussetts etc) NEVER benefit from it because it is not imposed.

The death penalty is not designed to keep others from committing crimes, It is designed to punish the criminal and keep him from committing additional crimes. Capital punishment accomplishes that very effectively.

re abortion

nathanb,

I had an abortion 20 years ago when I was in college and I can assure you it wasn't over after 2 hours and a shower. I now have two beautiful children, but to this day I think about it and regret it. And if you believe in God, I'll be punished for what I've done.  I am still pro-choice - people should be able to make that choice, especially since there is no LEGAL definition of when life begins. I am however personally against abortion, and would never advocate for it. In the end, no laws will ever rid our country of the demand for abortions. Ultimately, people who view this as a faith issue need to realize that those who commit murder will face the wrath of God. Those who don't need to realize that we have to live with ourselves and our conscience forever.  No legal penalty can match either.

Very brave

Of you to admit. Your lessons can help a new generation.

Good morning air

All we need to do to be forgiven is to ask for forgiveness. God says that when we repent He "casts our sins away as far as it is from east to west". We can travel west endlessly and never reach it. It's Gods way of telling us that our sins are gone forever after we tell Him we're sorry. Above all know that Jesus loves you. God bless you and yours.

air

I don't mean to belittle your experience, but how can you still be pro-choice given your guilt and regret? You say that there is no "legal" definition of when life begins, but the science puts it earlier and earlier. That the law has not kept up with science in no way makes it less wrong.

I believe in God, and I believe that if you truly repent and feel regret, then God will not punish you. He has blessed you with two more precious children. You CAN forgive yourself. God already has.

God bless and Happy Thanksgiving.

"This

You hit on a vital point.

In the end, no laws will ever rid our country of the demand for abortions.

Here's the way I see it.  The pro-life groups point out that it's sinful and a crime to humanity to murder an innocent and defenseless life.  What they don't do is give any substantial alternatives during the time a woman is in a panicked situation.

OTOH...

The pro-choice crowd use the excuse that it's a right to privacy issue and it's a woman's body...yadda, yadda, yadda argument.  The problem is I feel that they are taking advantage of a woman during the time that she is panicked and is advocating that they make a bad decision that they will one day regret.  We need to stop focusing on the women's right v.s. abortion is murder angle and advocate more alternatives for women.

When you were in college, you must have felt that you were in a serious bind in order to get an abortion.  I bet that Planned Parenthood or whatever place you went to to have the proceedure done was there to counsel you and help you make the decision.  But after you had the proceedure they were done with you.  The pro-life side IMO, doesn't seem to have a network of support to not only convince women to have their babies but to give them options of adoption, help teach them how to support their baby while continuing school, counseling, etc.  Instead you see both groups shouting at each other in front of abortion clinics or during a protest in DC.

Women don't get abortions because it's the cool thing to do, they do it because they're desperate.  We pro-lifers need to be there to counsel pregnant women and girls and help them through that desperate moment AND help them plan for their future and the future of their child.  They need to know that we are out there and are not alone.  They need to know that Planned Parenthood or the local abortion clinic in the yellow pages is NOT the only place they can turn to for help.

That is the failure of the pro-life groups.  They need to be more visible and more understanding to the plight of the woman instead of yelling at her in front of an abortion clinic and calling her disparaging names when she is already scared and desperate.

With all due respect

Maybe you should find a Libertarian candidate that can support your "government: stay out of the abortion issue" stance.

Any conservative worth a snot would hold true to principles of life, unborn innocent life.

If you truly want the states to decide than why not advocte for overturning Roe and giving it back to the states as you say? If that's really what you want, you need people, like Palin, to first say that is not a right to privacy issue or a federal issue.

"Do we need a

It depends on how far the homosexual pressure groups are willing to go to force their lifestyle on us.   There was no need for any legislation at all about marriage until they started trying to hijack it through the courts.  If you don't like govt intrusion, go after them, not normal Americans.

The same applies to human beings. WE have male and female parts. It is normal to match up the female parts with the male parts. That is normal. Matching male to male or female to female is abnormal.

What are her views on abortion?

I don't recall her talking about abortion during the campaign.  The MSM did that and decided what her views were because she dared not abort Trig or take Bristol to Planned Parenthood when she found out she was pregnant.  Choosing not to abort your child is to some considered an extreme view on abortion.

You are correct, she made no comments or pronouncements regarding abortion as far as I can recall.

It was her ACTIONS that spoke so elloquently.  She carried her unborn baby to term and delivered it regardless of the fact it was expected to suffer from Downs Syndrome.  THIS DROVE THE LEfT WILD.

THe classic case of actions speaking louder the words in a positive manner.

You have just stated a

You have just stated a dichotomy in your own argument. Which is it. She is a RINO, or she is an extreme religious conservative?

She is a RINO,If she was

She is a RINO,

If she was a RINO, the Old Media would begin to starting loving her like they are with McCain again (not that McLame is a true RINO like Arlen Specter is, but he has been a pain in the pass for the past ten years).

Gotta tell ya, McCain IS a RINO.  Has been.

He prefers to fight with his comrades rather than the opposition. I think it all boils down to his egocentric approach.  He never got over his being passed over by the party for GWB in 2000 whome he considers inferior to his own massive personality.

He has been making us pay for that ever since.  He long ago ceased championing policies popular in his home state witness McCain/ Finegold and McCain /Kennedy.

He became the Senator from the great state of MSM about eight years ago and needs to go.

A RINO to me is someone who

A RINO to me is someone who votes more with the liberals than with the conservatives. McCain never has done that, though he has been close enough to doing so to annoy me most of the time.

Hey BD

Nice to meet another conservative from Arizona.  With that said  McCain is a RINO I've lived in AZ for over 10 years.  I will not vote for him again for state Senator - I'll vote the Democrat if it comes down to it just for the fact that at least I know what I'll be getting and not lied to.   McCain is just worthless.  His amnesty stance is just deplorable.

"No American would pick lettuce for 25 dollars an hour"  this is an actual  quote from McCain during his amnesty bill that resonated on talk radio down here.  That statement tells you three things:  he has been an elitist for to long AND has no understanding of what the "average Joe" earns AND he's an open border fool with no concept of what it means to be a citizen.

And by the way the ONLY reason I voted McCain was because of PALIN too.  When the MSM would say "she's only a heartbeat away from being the president"  I was thinking to myself "can we pass legislation that if he has a heart attack to NOT shock his heart with those paddles"

okay, I'm off my soap box.

Yeah, we in Cochise County

Yeah, we in Cochise County have been saying for years that if Sedona or Scottsdale were down here on the border and being overrun every evening with illegal aliens McCain and crew would have the 82nd Airborne monitoring the border.

I think we can all agree

I think we can all agree that he was the worst GOP candidate in decades. Dole might have had a better chance against Obama than McLame had.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

Yeah, I just re-read my

Yeah, I just re-read my post.  Please allow me to clarify.  The RINO's lost the Senate and the House seats as well as the Presidency.  Palin is in no way a RINO and she was used by McCain to shore up his credentials for the conservatives.  As for religion, her views on abortion are a deal breaker with many women and goes against the mantra of small government by the Republicans.  If we are to be for small government, then we cannot be proposing more laws to infringe on the choices people make.  I do not support abortion except for in the rare circumstances of rape, incest and the like, but I also do not want to see the federal government making laws regarding when it is or is not ok.  Allow the states to make such laws and let the people vote for them.

small gov

I'm not a huge Palin fan (small fan) but she did advocate State's rights on this issue. Her personal opinion is her own but she didn't make any claims to force that opinion at the federal level.

As for religion, her views

As for religion, her views on abortion are a deal breaker with many women and goes against the mantra of small government by the Republicans.

Why is abortion always viewed as just a religious thing? Is being against murder or theft mean that you have to be extremely religious, too?

I know atheists that are anti-abortion because they feel a fetus can't be anything but human. As a non-atheist, that's where I'm coming from on the issue, too.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

Because it's an age old

Because it's an age old liberal ploy, target a group or person for dicreditation as being stupid, headstrong or obtuse, then anything the discredited group or person is in favor of is automatically discredited.  E.g. Religious people are closed minded boobs, religious people are anti-abortion, therefore being anti-abortion is a religious issue.  It's just another version of circular reasoning which liberals are so famous for doing.

They are doing the exact same thing with Palin as the face of the GOP.  E.g. Palin is a religious nut, Palin is a Republican, therefore Republicans are nuts.  Except in this case since they don't want Palin to be the face of the GOP, there is a slight twist, I call it INNOCULATION.  Libs at this point are trying their best to discredit Palin so she doesn't become the new face of the GOP, therefore they are propagandizing via the MSM that Palin is the face of the GOP and that is bad because she is a religious nut.  They are trying to shame the GOP rank & file into not having her as the face of the GOP.  This is the same idea with AGW skeptics being called "deniers".  Libs have always been good with mind games.

I find it truly amazing that so many people are making so much of Sarah Palin's religious views/ views on abortion.

WHY?

She never forced it on anybody, it is her personal views.  I think that people are feeling threatened by her or maybe convicted and that is why they hate her so much.

I read about a Democrat who supported her in Alaska, he said that he didn't know about her "extreme' religious views, until she became the VP candidate and now he has his doubts about her!!  How come, if she is so radical in her religious views, did these people in Alaska not know about it?!

The truly funny thing is that my own pastor doesn't even believe that she is a Christian!  He prefers Huckabee.

This is so ridiculous.  NOTHING Sarah does ever seems to be enough.

"This is so ridiculous.

"This is so ridiculous. NOTHING Sarah does ever seems to be enough." Which is exactly what the left and the MSM (redundant) perpetrated and desire to perpetuate. This is why they will continue to make her the face of the Republican party, because in their view, they have been successful in her demonization. They are afraid of her because she appeals to conservatives.

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:31

You're Right

I watched Election Edition with Ms. All Bias/All Bull the night Palin was announced as VP choice.

Campbell Brown started the show by tearing into Palin asking, "Do you believe she's qualified," thereby implying she isn't. How many times during the election did you hear of Palin's astronomical approval rating?

I recently read an article stating that Alaska maybe the only state in the union that may not go bankrupt during the next 18 months because Palin was socking $5 billion away when crude prices were at an all-time high and vetoing spending.

The "unqualified, redneck bimbo" I have grown to love may have the last laugh after all.

BW222

Huh?

"her views on abortion are a deal breaker with many women and goes against the mantra of small government by the Republicans"

Huh?  Hay, Jay, how does the "right" to abortion, right now, make for a smaller government?

Let's get real. Banning the murder of unborn children isn't a "small government" issue (how would that increase the size of government, anyways?), but is, instead a HUMAN RIGHTS issue, and one that EVERY Conservative should support and defend., if they are to be true to their Conservative beliefs and ideals.

Contrary to your claims about what Conservatives want, and need, , it's the Libertarians who believes in Small Government at Any Cost, even at the cost of the unborn children being slain on a daily bases.

Obama: My job is above my pay grade

Jay, I think that makes a

Jay, I think that makes a more common sense approach on the issue.  Let the people of the individual states make those decisions.  State by state, there will be a more homogenous blend of common thoughts than looking across the whole nation.  I still disagree with your thoughts on Palin.  I much rather spend the next four years seeing her than Rudy or John.

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

I agree with the others...

that suggest that Sarah Palin is not a religious extremist.  Firm, but not extreme.

She may not be everything "we are looking for", but she is closer than John McCain was, regarding Conservative issues (outside of national defense and lower taxes).

I think Sarah Palin is a "quick learner", regarding issues.  After the Georgia Senate runoff and a few other appearances in the lower 48, she should go back and successfuly complete her first term as Alaska Governor and engage in the dutiful study of issues, in case 2012 is "her time".  Maybe she needs to watch Newt Gingrich's tapes (Renewing America or whatever the name was for the series from the 1990s).  She is every bit as qualified as Barack Obama.

She can connect with the metaphorical "everyman" versus a Marxist-educated Chicago elitist.  I think that can give her an edge, especially if BHO tries to pull the nation to the left during his first/only term.

Jay

Define "extreme."  Palin said publicly that she has her beliefs, and she does not intend to shove them down anyone else's throat.  So she's pro-life.  And she LIVES her beliefs, rather than just talking about them, which is what most politicians do.  But as far as being extreme, she doesn't even belong to a specific church right now.  Huckabee was a Baptist minister.  Do you think HE'S a religious extremist too?

Ms. Noonan

Dear Ms. Noonan,

If there is one Face in the Republican party I am sick of seeing, it is yours. Please go Away. We have no use for you or your kind.

Have a Great Day!

Biased Girl

http://www.withbias.net

Peggy, you have some issues.

Look, I think the headline with Mrs. Palin, let me throw out this idea: she will never not be with us, she will be covered regularly between now and 2012.

Is it so difficult to refer to her as Governor Palin?  Why do people feel the need to marginalize Gov. Palin by just refering to her as Mrs. Palin?

Perfect Demotivator for the Obama Administration

http://www.despair.com/government.html

The Same Thing

They did the same thing to President Bush.  I never heard Clinton referred to as MR. Clinton during his presidency, but I rarely heard G.W. Bush referred to as President Bush, it was always Mr. Bush or just Bush.  Heck, they refer to politicians who aren't even in office anymore by their honorifics (Senator, Governor, President, etc., ) but not politicians they don't like.  It is an effort to marginalize and show disrespect.

Peggy, we get it.  You don't like Palin.  She's not good enough for you.  So shut up about it or you'll end up marginalizing yourself!

The game

This all makes sense if you assume that Palin is "unqualified." The game is that if voters associate Palin as the GOP, the media and the Democrats will wait until the right time, and then pull the rug out from underneath her. The assumption is that it will be easy to pull the rug, because she's such a lightweight. Noonan, who agrees that Palin is a lightweight, agrees with the assumption.

The media created the narrative that Palin is not intelligent enough. How did they do that? They asked her questions that she didn't answer "correctly."

  • The two most famous were about the Bush Doctrine, and what newspapers and magazines formed her worldview.
  • At least for the second question, the media imposed their own prejudices on what "correct" is. After all, why did Katie Couric assume that Palin needed the media to form her worldview?

Palin is a successful and popular governor, but the media claims that it doesn't matter because the state of Alaska is so small. But then again, how big was Arkansas when Clinton was governor there?

noonan

That's GOVENOR Palin, you  elitist bitch. Has our darling Peggy gone the way of msnbc who refer to PRESIDENT Bush, as Mr. Bush. Guess what Peggy darling, our votes count just as much as yours, I suppose you find that a bit annoying.  We need Palin much more than we need the likes of you.  Enjoy your "beltway/corridor status.  Your new "friends" will give you every opportunity to showcase you as the voice of "responsible Republicanism", while they control things for the next 40 odd years.

Absolutely Wrong Conclusion

"...because it amuses them to do that". Peggy, you are absolutely wrong about your conclusion. They do this because they believe they have successfully demonized Sarah Palin and as long as their "demon" is the face of the Republican party they will continue to push her out there in the twisted belief that she "hurts the Republican party". Peggy, do you remember working for a real conservative...a man of genuine character? Remember him? You were once a help to our party and now you've turned into nothing more than a lefty tool, IMHO.

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:31

Why Peggy Hates Sarah

The dark secret is that Peggy went to Farleigh Dickenson University. She worked hard to get into the same social circles as those Barnard girl Democrats in New York.

Peggy will not violate the social contract of the  sorority she worked so hard to join and find herself clucked at for supporting some hick from the Alaska.

We need a NEWnan.

We need a NEWnan.

Wouldn't She "Raaather" be Called Margaret?

Peggy Noonan, whose feces emit no odor (according to Peggy Noonan), is part of a group of "enlightened Republicans" gracing the airwaves of MSNBC.  Of course an "enlightened Republican" is one who takes pleasure in agreeing with leftists who criticize other Republicans, not necessarily one with his/her own ideas.

"Ya might think" (as Sarah Palin would say), or "one might surmise" (as Peggy Noonan would say), that these "enlightened Republicans" would have learned the folly of backstabbing your own from John McCain.  But it seems ego continues to trump reason and intellect.

Let's make it a point from now on to call this "backstabbing b**ch" (as Sarah Palin might say), or "erudite, conniving harlot" (as Peggy Noonan might say) by her true patrician given name, Margaret rather than the friendly informal Peggy.  It's the least we can do to recognize her unique stature.

A basic human emotion--

We all have opinions about ourselves as well as others. Governor Palin came on the scene and in a short while endeared herself to a large number of conservative, (possibly Republican), voters. As in any situation in life, there are  many who feel that their light is diminished when the "new guy on the block" appears and captures all the interest.

Governor Sarah-- (I call my doctor, doctor Jim and my rep, Representative Phil, (Gingrey), that's my style, is ,to their shame. particularly vilified by women. To make matters worse, Republican women are more at fault than others. Decent conservative women like Kathleen Parker have turned their backs on principles to attack Gov Sarah.

My amateur psychological analysis suggests this is a case of mass jealousy. Gov Sarah is no less qualified than Prez Obama. Both of them could be judged to be less qualified than most in Congress based on however the jealous ones want to analyze it. Buit, on a psoitive note, she has not been tainted by DC corruption and self interest. God willing, her arms are too short to "reach across the aisle"" for a back stabbing.

Simply put, I might not have voted for McCain if he had not picked Gov Palin. I most certainly would not have voted for McCain if he chose another party hack RINO.

So, let all those who have a bug in their shorts say what they will. I believe there are millions of conservatives who really feel that Gov Palin is a conservative too.

Maybe McCain should have chosen Sen Martinez. My guess is he would have only gotten 25 million votes, I sure as hell would never have voted for them.

Finally, the fact that she is physically attractive, yet a loving mother was too much for many women to handle,

So to all of you Noonan types, I say, "Get thee to a nunnery",

Peggy Noonan can kiss my

Peggy Noonan can kiss my conservative a$$.  She doesn't speak for me.   She and David Brooks make me sick.  Are they trying to see who will be the next David Gergen???  Big deal, they both win.

Isn't there a way for the republican party to sue these people to stop them from claiming they are republicans.  Isn't it false advertising.

unfortunately, i agree with noonan ...

i think the MSM believes it succeeded in portraying palin as a moronic individual and is doing nothing but piling on ... the most recent being the interview at the turkey farm.

noonan is just being honest here IMHO ... when the majority of the american public gets its news from the MSM, the unflattering portrait they've painted of palin has stuck in the minds of most americans:

1. couric and gibson interviews

2. using tina fey's SNL portrayal of palin as factual

3. the pregnant, unmarried daughter

4. the $150,000 wardrobe expense

these are all things intended to make palin look like a buffoon and the MSM believes they've acheived this.  it makes sense when their effort is to keep dems in power ...  why wouldn't they want to make palin the face of the GOP if they believe they have successfully convinced the public that she is a embarassing dolt.

this is what infuriates me about the left ... they claim to be intellectual, mature and "above-it-all" ... but when you look at their track record ... there is no substance to their strategy ... they make it personal and drop the level of play down to an elementary school playground level ... name calling, rumour spreading and whining ... total immaturity.  they're scared to death of palin and this is the only way they can fight her.

i give credit to noonan for calling it as she sees it ... we need to find a better way to brand our product as conservatives/republicans to appeal to the masses as well as destroy the media's efforts to assassinate our leaders' characters for the sole purpose of fortifying the negative stereotype they've handed the GOP.

Hypocrisy Alert!

I have to say this:

How does anybody in the media get off with making an issue of the $150,000.00 collection of clothes that Governor Palin made temporary use of strictly for the campaign but did not keep, while ignoring Obama's collection $150,000,000.00 of illegal foreign donations that he raked in AND used illegally?

Let’s be clear about this:  Whenever the MSM is making a fuss about something that a conservative is doing or has done, it is a good bet that the MSM is doing this to distract everybody's attention from some major crime and/or problem that concerns liberals.

Impunitas semper ad deteriora invitat.

Needle

AMEN!  You have THAT right!  I started noticing this during the Clinton Administration, and the media play along like a well-conducted symphony.  Whatever the libs and the media are accusing the "vast right-wing conspiracy" of doing, you can bet they're doing that and more themselves. My favorite example is voter fraud.  They INVENTED voter fraud, but they loudly accuse the right of "disenfranchising" and "intimidating" voters, while at the same time they work furiously to prevent voters from even having to show identification at the polls.  A dead person can't vote if they have to have a current driver's license!  The right believes in "one person, one vote."  The left believes in "vote early and vote often, in as many states as you can - as long as you vote for OUR guy!"  Keep in mind, as the left currently whines about the "inaccuracies" of the Diebold voting machines, they are also working hard to get INTERNET voting established.  Oh yeah, no potential for fraud there!

I just wanted to barf

When Mika gave Penny Goonan her pre-break intro. I just knew that Gov Palin would be a topic of discussion when she was on and Mika didn't let me down by slow pitching a Gov Palin feed. Goonan heartily took a swing by first crossing her arms across her chest feigning a choke hold on herself, followed by her favorite denigrating means of refering to Gov Palin as Mrs. Palin.

Goonan is mischievous by her unwillingness to properly address an individual by their earned title, instead she relishes the opportunity to win graces of the liberal elite with her petty mockery of a popularly elected state governer.

Later in the discussion, she had her advice for Mrs. Palin, that she should go back and work hard to govern her state and rack up some accomplishments, later saying that she [Gov Palin] will have a harder time "shaking down" the oil companies. WTF?

With snobs like Goonan, the Republican party will never fully appeal to undecideds, or even conservative minded folk.

Noonan is part of the problem with the GOP

The GOP leadership actively shut out Alan Keyes from any campaign event this election cycle. He was dis-invited to two of the early 'debates'. The GOP leadership was trying to do what the MSM did in the general election, namely decide for the people who their choices would be. As a result Alan Keyes was forced to leave the GOP and find another party that reflected his conservative views. Whether they know it or not, Alan took a fair number with him. McCain winning the nomination alienated many more because of his centrist views and his campaign finance reform stance. McCain only really excited the base of the party and thus had any chance of winning when he picked Palin as his running mate. Now we see that some of the GOP 'leadership' are uncomfortable with Governor Palin as the 'face of the party' becasue she has apparently not been properly instructed and indoctrinated into the party but rather comes to conservative views and holds conservative values all on her own. Imagine their horror to find that Sarah Palin energized the Republican base simply because she is an honest and real conservative, not the fake RINO that so many have become.

The face of the party should be, and will be, whomever can re-energize and revitalize the GOP. Right now that is Sarah Palin. It certaintly isn't Mitt Romney or Governor Pawlenty or Mike Huckabee.

As for the thought of the MSM 'making mischief' by trying to make Sarah Palin the 'face of the GOP'...well, I can only hope that they get what they wish for.

I've read about a Republican from the back-woods of hicksville who energized conservatives and became the 'face of his party. He was reviled by the liberals of his day and the news media poked fun at his unsophisticated and honest speeches. Left to the "intelligentia" and the news media of the day, Abraham Lincoln would never have amounted to anything.

Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!

Alan Keyes / Sarah Palin - 2012

Keep Palin in the news, may grace be her's.

Using the term, “Please God no,”  when you are trying to be contra to other Christians posting on this site, I do not know, what is meant by taking the Lord’s name in vain?  I think it is one thing to quote the Scriptures another to throw around the word God to make a point.  Huckabee attacking Mormonism was against ‘a bill of rights’ commandment, I would not go to a voting booth for him.  If I could not walk I would drag myself there for Palin, she has yet to disappoint me.

Peggy Noonan is the Perfect Definition of a RINO

Peggy Noonan may have been a conservative speechwriter at one time, but she is now more liberal than conservative. Rush Limbaugh has said: "...but you know there are a bunch of people off our reservation in the conservative media and just lately the names being bandied about are Peggy Noonan, David Frum, David Brooks. I don't know to what extent these people ever really were on our side, to tell you the truth."

During the Republican Convention Peggy Noonan was a participant on a CSPAN program titled "Politics and the Republican Convention.." Peggy Noonan was an embarrassment. She seemed to me to be in a state of rambling incoherence most of the time, and when she did speak clearly she said (1) that reporters should be centrist in their reporting like Brian Williams (I kid you not) and (2) She longed for the 'old' days when we had the three powerful networks and Walter Cronkite.

If you are still not convinced that Noonan is a RINO and that she is infatuated with Barack Obama than perhaps her own words will do the trick. In Obama and the Runaway Train she writes:

"The case for Barack Obama, in broad strokes: He has within him the possibility to change the direction and tone of American foreign policy, which need changing; his rise will serve as a practical rebuke to the past five years, which need rebuking; his victory would provide a fresh start in a nation in which a fresh start would come as a national relief. He climbed steep stairs, born off the continent with no father to guide, a dreamy, abandoning mother, mixed race, no connections. He rose with guts and gifts. He is steady, calm, and, in terms of the execution of his political ascent, still the primary and almost only area in which his executive abilities can be discerned, he shows good judgment in terms of whom to hire and consult, what steps to take and moves to make."

In A Thinking Man's Speech Noonan writes: "I thought Barack Obama's speech was strong, thoughtful and important. Rather beautifully, it was a speech to think to, not clap to. It was clear that's what he wanted, and this is rare."

As Mark Finkelstein noted, Peggy Noonan is also not a fan of Gov. Sarah Palin (surprise, surprise). In Palin's Failin' she writes: "But we have seen Mrs. Palin on the national stage for seven weeks now, and there is little sign that she has the tools, the equipment, the knowledge or the philosophical grounding one hopes for, and expects, in a holder of high office."

Noonan further scrawls: "This is not a leader, this is a follower, and she follows what she imagines is the base, which is in fact a vast and broken-hearted thing whose pain she cannot, actually, imagine. She could reinspire and reinspirit; she chooses merely to excite. She doesn't seem to understand the implications of her own thoughts."

Beware of RINOs in Conservative's clothing!

Why the two Americas, the Left and the Right, can never reconcile ~ An excellent article by Dennis Prager

Dennis Miller sez...

...in one of his commentaries leading up to the election that women who disliked Governor Palin were generally jealous of her obviously happy marriage and family life.

This makes more sense as critics like Peggy Noonan (divorced) continue to make their living by knocking someone as accomplished and attractive as Governor Sarah Palin.

Republicans Let Media Choose McCain

Just as a reminder, the liberal media WANTED John McCain to be the Republican candidate for a reason, they knew he would be the weakest candidate. Let's be honest, McCain was soundly trounced in this election just as the liberal media planned. If the liberal media is hoping for a Palin candidacy for President it should cause ears to perk up among Republicans. What the Republican party needs is a true conservative who can open up the party and sell conservatism to minorities. I think Bobby Jindal is the best face for the Republican Party right now. Perhaps a Bobby Jindal - Mitt Romney ticket would be the best sollution.  Two governors with plenty of executive experience and credentials would be tough to beat I think.

No Palin in 2012

She makes a fine governor for the state of Alaska. But listen to her talk for a while. Then listen to Pawlenty, Jindal, or Romney speak. There is no comparison. She is out of her league on the national stage and would be best off serving the fine people of Alaska.

I didn't vote for John McCain because he was the stupid RINO that the media forced into the Republican nomination just in case the Republicans won, they would still have a liberal at the wheel. I refused to vote for the lesser of 2 evils. I threw my vote to Chuck Baldwin because he knows far more what being a conservative means than pro illegal immigrant, pro climate change legislation idiot McCain did. Now they are being more bold by wanting to push Palin into the picture because they know that Palin is unelectable. I actually like her, but not for a president. Senator would be good. Then after a few years of learning more national affairs, she would be ready for a presidential run. Right now, Jindal and Pawlenty are looking MUCH better as the GOP option for 2012.

Agreed Romney in 2012

I tried to tell everyone Palin would not sell and the pregnant teenage daughter sealed the deal with anyone I had tried to convince to vote against Obama. I never liked McCain (amnesty, global warming, bailout) and voted for Barr.

No Romney in 2012

Romney was for abortion before he was against it.  That is an issue that I can not fathom anyone waffling on.  He might be a very talented politician (even if he did give MA socialized medicine) but he's not one I would trust.

Perfect Demotivator for the Obama Administration

http://www.despair.com/government.html

Ronald Reagan Waffled on Abortion

Ronald Reagan waffled on abortion too. And Reagan turned into the best President of the 20th century. In fact, Reagan was even a liberal democrat when he got started who later converted to conservatism. What is the REAL reason that you oppose Romney? I can guess...

Well, PT, Dick Cheney's

Well, PT, Dick Cheney's daughter is a L-E-S-B-I-A-N.  Since when was a child out of wedlock any more of a liability than other alternative lifestyles, especially to liberals????

The idea that you had to convince someone to vote against Obama means you couldn't convince the same person that voting for McCain would give them a better Democrat than Obama.  If a person was seriously considering Obama, they either were already in the tank for Democrats anyway or so gullible that they believed the propaganda ($500 bribe) that incessantly spilled out of the MSM, neither of these would vote Repub in any event.

Like you, I don't like McCain or his pet issues.  Barr was a protest vote with 531,542 who pulled the lever for him, not even 1% of McCain's 59,249,299.  You can take solice that those voting for Barr and Nader combined didn't even come close enough be a spoiler tipping the election one way or the other.  Even the loon Cythina McKinney didn't get a 1/3 of what Barr got.

(Caveat, all these stats were compliments of Wiki so this should be considered a rough estimation, however I notice that Obama's totals vary according website by about 3 million votes)

Too Funny

Dick Cheney's daughter being a lesbian was a non-issue as people can be born gay.

Why not start with someone without all the personal scandals? The older generation and many like me have a problem with Palin's daughter being pregnant, it shows her lack of parenting skills. Sorry that is the truth.

I can take solice in that I voted my conscience and can sleep well at night.

Valid point

I like Pawlenty, Romney, and esp. Jindal as well and want to see them as contenders in 2012.But with that said, the bigger issue is the way she's been treated. And more importantly how that reflects on the people that supported (and continue to support her. When the media mocks her down-to-earth folksy ways, they are mocking a good chunk of Americans that find this appealing and a breath of fresh air. So while we can discuss if she's ready or would ever be a prominent figure on the national stage, I think it's important we show support for her as a figure if only to show support to everyone that's not living in Boston, The Beltway, NYC or San Fran.

Better Sarah's Face than Peggy's

Sarah Palin much more represents what I want the face of our party than the Peggy Noonan types. A natural Sarah Palin is much more attractive than Peggy (face lifts and all).

Elitists, RINOs and neocons (Noonan, Parker, Barnes, Brooks, Frum, etc.) have more to damage the GOP and the conservative movement than liberals ever dreamed possible.

Go Sarah Go! Drag Chambliss' sorry butt over the finish line.

Ms Noonan is part of the Main Stream Media so she "feels" she is more qualified to make these determinations. One only has to watch her during an interview or segment to see she has an overinflated ego and opinion of herself. She will always smile, tilt her head to side, sigh every so lightly, then give a slow deliberate answer the whole time with the look of "You poor ignorant goose" "I must gently correct your empty headed assumptions or the free world will cease to exist." As I said, she is a large part of the problem with the GOP. I got a call this A.M. from the GOP wanting money to help poor old Senator NORM up in Minnesota. I asked the young lady how the hell was my money going to help Norm now that that votes have already been cast. She didn't get it (the money or the concept). As long as there are these "blue-blood" Repubs trying to pull the party to the center they will continue to aid and abet the Left / Liberal agenda and continue to lose elections. You just can't fix Stupid.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

When did she talk about abortion?

I have to ask, when did Palin rail against abortion?  Her comments were that life was precious to her, thus her and her husband's decision to not terminate the life of her child when diagnosed with Downs Syndrome.

No, our 'Unbiased' media, (I'm saying that part while THROWING UP), talked about it.

Almost the same way as those ads the NAACP ran with the chains dragging behind the pickup saying George Bush would bring back 'Seperate but equal'.

The negatives that our press showed against this woman was deplorable.  How many days did they spend on Biden's goofs?  Heck, they HID Biden for the last two weeks!

The Zogby poll where more of the Obama supporters got the questions right about Palin, but WRONG about Obama, (I love the one where 57% of Obama supporters still thought the Republicans were still in charge of congress.), just shows how biased our press is.

The truth is that if Palin wasn't on the ticket, this would have been an even MORE of a blowout.

I live in Washington state, that is now in a $5 billion budget deficit, 20% of our budget.  This was KNOWN, but the Democrat governor still got re-elected.  Why?  Because our press didn't TALK about it.

But I have had a bunch of 'I told you so' rolling out.  And I intend a bunch more to come out for Obammy.

A silly conspiracy theory

I had this crazy thought early this morning or was it late last night while laying in bed.

So,Palin is obviously popular despite the media's purposeful trashing of her and she really does have a good message.  But that message it seems conflicts with McCain's message and I am still kind of scratching my head as to why McCain tapped her for VP and then bascially set her up to fail.   She was put in a box she couldn't fit into and had allot of trouble keeping her facts straight from the McCain "centrist" facts.

Add into the fact that I think McCain never thought he could win nor did he really try to win.  So, by picking Palin he would have a scape-goat for his failed campaign and he accomplished this through surrogates and never once really stood up for her.

So I was thinking, what if McCain and the other GOP elite saw her as a potential threat to take the party to the right in 2012 and upset the usual method of choosing the next in line by seniority.

Had Palin been given a prestigious place at the RNC and allowed to speak her mind, I think she would have got the same reaction she got but would not have been such a target out of the gate.  She then could take a page out of the Obama campaign and set up interviews and such on her own time-table.  Then interest in her could have built and her negatives would be very low, positioning her to come into 2012 and beat Obama.

Her challenge going forward is to obviously attempt to contradict the perception that she can't put a sentence together.  However, going on Oprah, Letterman, and the the like will not help, I don't think, as the two mentioned as well as others still see it as their duty to keep her as a laughing-stock of the nation.  Leno might give her a fair shake,  MSNBC and NBC must be boycotted at all costs.

The only place I agree with Noonan on is that the Media is up to no good, however, I think their goal is to prevent her from rehabilitating her image and becoming the 2012 nominee, let alone a contender.  They are going for the knock out.

Poor Peggy Noonan!

My theory is that the liberal media is keeping Sarah Palin ever present to spook the heck out of Peggy Noonan and drive her bonkers.

Poor Peggy Noonan!  What is to become of this is elitist RINO commentator?  She has a tin ear for family values and culture war issues.  She is probably almost as disdainful towards Christians as the rest of the MSM, but is aware that she had better keep quiet about that.

She is ambivalent about the subversiveness of the media, because she is part of the media and actually thinks that the media is on the whole a positive force in our society.  Yuck!

Her collection of dispositions and predilections have less and less currency in the shifting scene, along with RINOs and their shiftless “principles”.  Maybe she would be at home with a spot on The View.
