Friedman: Put 'Government Master' In Charge of Automakers

It's not like Barack Obama is a socialist or anything. It's just that Thomas Friedman wants him to put a "government master" in charge of the country's biggest manufacturing sector. Friedman made his modest proposal in his New York Times column of today, and expanded on it during a Morning Joe appearance. [H/t reader Tom.]

Video also available here.

I've got three easy reasons why Friedman's idea won't work.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

JOE SCARBOROUGH: They can't fail, right? Is that true? Detroit: we can't allow GM, Ford, Chrysler to fail?

THOMAS FRIEDMAN: But can we make them succeed?

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Exactly.

FRIEDMAN: I think that's the question.  And I think the only way to do this is by basically saying to the leadership of all these companies: you're gone, the boards are gone, the equity's gone.  We're going to name a government master to come in here, and we're going to set certain standards: 4% mileage improvement per year for the next ten years.  Whatever standards you want to set.  But you're going to get this money not to be bailed out, but to be transformed.

In his column, Friedman provides more detail of what he has in mind, approvingly quoting a column in the Wall Street Journal on Monday by Paul Ingrassia, a former WSJ Detroit bureau chief [emphasis added]:

In return for any direct government aid, the board and the management [of G.M.] should go. Shareholders should lose their paltry remaining equity. And a government-appointed receiver — someone hard-nosed and nonpolitical — should have broad power to revamp G.M. with a viable business plan and return it to a private operation as soon as possible. That will mean tearing up existing contracts with unions, dealers and suppliers, closing some operations and selling others and downsizing the company ... Giving G.M. a blank check — which the company and the United Auto Workers union badly want, and which Washington will be tempted to grant — would be an enormous mistake.

To Ingrassia's proposal, Friedman writes that he:

would add other conditions: Any car company that gets taxpayer money must demonstrate a plan for transforming every vehicle in its fleet to a hybrid-electric engine with flex-fuel capability, so its entire fleet can also run on next generation cellulosic ethanol.

The notion of a receivership is well known in bankruptcy and has its merits.  The ability to nullify union contracts would be welcome. Those contracts have dragged Detroit down with health care obligations adding hundreds to the cost of every car compared to its non-union foreign car competitors with manufacturing operations in the US.

Even so, here's my starter list of reasons why the Friedman/Ingrassia proposal wouldn't work:

  • Friedman would force manufacturers to drastically increase mileage and make every car a hybrid.  The larger, more powerful vehicles have traditionally been the most profitable.  But Detroit would be denied the ability to even compete in that sector.  Say thank you, BMW, Toyota, et. al.
  • Friedman's master would be "non-political."  Good luck with that.  Friedman spent much of his time today lambasting the politicians who have "helped" Detroit so much over the decades that they've now nearly killed it. With billions of dollars and millions of jobs and votes at stake, does anyone really imagine the pols won't put their paws in?
  • The master would "revamp G.M. with a viable business plan."  You mean that viable business plan that's been sitting there quietly on the shelf all these years that the automakers have willfully ignored?  If there was a business genius out there with a plan in his back pocket that could save the industry, surely GM would have found him and paid him millions to work his magic.
Friedman's faith in a government bureaucrat, subject to the pressures of his political masters, doing what the free market couldn't, is touching but a bit naive.

I really wanted to see and hear that leaping liberal illogic for myself.

Well, if the "master" is the government, under the supremely wise leadership of "The One", I suppose next up on the agenda is huge import tariff's, woooooweee, down the slippery slope we go!

What, you want a bank loan from that government bank to buy a new vehicle?  The master says you must buy a GM hybrid.  Else the master won't provide you with your own tax dollars to buy new wheels with which to contribute your share of the wealth to the collective.

It's never going to end.

P.S.  I really like the way you imbed your videos so that they hit my media player, rather than playing in the NB blog post.

'Government Master'

Thats racits !

Just out of curiosity....

Why does anyone care what this guy thinks? He has yet to write or say a single thing that makes any sense. He is a creation of The Times, and actually thinks his opinions matter.

Just another leftist limousine loudmouth liberal, who has never held a real job.

The unions are the reason for the collapse of the American Auto Industry. They have finally manages to choke the goose that has been laying golden eggs.

And what is Friedman's

And what is Friedman's proposal for his own company's survival?

Great point, d1carter!

Great point, d1carter!  Shouldn't the Times hire the brilliant business savior before GM gets their hands on him?

I wonder

What this guy drives and flies in.

I have a fourth

I have a fourth reason:

Everything the federal government touches it screws up. We'll be re-tooling the Gremlin as the new "People's Car."

"People's Car?" Most

"People's Car?"

Most approprate,  Friedman would have Obama create a 'People's Car'.  Friedman needs a history lesson.  That has already been done by a like minded leader.  The result is called "Volkswagen".

CAFE regulations

It would be better for the government to remove CAFE regulations and let the manufactures build whatever they want. The market determines what will sell. If people what high gas mileage the manufacturers should make it. If they want big trucks fine.

Government is the problem not the solution.

On a similar note, another site brought up Obama's intention of bankrupting our carbon-based power-plants and another possibility came to mind.  The plan might just be typical AGWBS and utter stupidity with horrendous consequences, but what if bankrupting the vast majority of our power grid is the goal?  After all, what's the latest craze in dealing with failing businesses?  See where I'm going?

With the government in charge, I wonder where the R&D money for a 40% increase in fuel efficiency over 10 years is going to come from... and how are they supposed to make cars compatible with 'next-generation' fuels that don't even exist?

Every libtard has a plan for government intervention that will not work.

After years of making assertions, one finally panned out - Latin debt crisis.  He is really good at convincing people with his image of financial authority that he actually does know something.  In other words he is just like the MSM, a bunch of talking heads mindlessly prattling.  This is another spin on the theory of evolution, like the probability of it happening by chance is equivalent to that of an unabridged dictionary coming into existence from a monkey randomly pressing the keys on a typewriter or computer keyboard, but in his case they only had to come up with a sentence.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

And I suppose all this

And I suppose all this glorious talk of government bureaucrats running GM is due to GM's (and their subsidiaries) management's staff incompetence? I wonder what Obama's contributors who gave $102k to his campaign from GM think about being called incompetent?  Or the people at Ford who gave $112k to Obama?

So what's the thinking here with Dem supporters in the auto company management, "I'm too stupid to realize Obama is going to put me out of a job and vilify me as a moron" or "I want a vacation from being responsible and would rather be a mindless uncreative drone taking orders from a government bureaucrat?"  Which is it?

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

This is not an auto industry bailout-it is a UNION bailout.

Neither Pelosi, Reid, nor that Friedman idiot are really all that bothered by the possible collapse of the auto industry. All they are really concerned about is their precious union members, who are automatic votes for the democrat party.

I doubt seriously that if GM, Ford and Chrysler were non-union operations, we wouldn't even be discussing bailouts.

BTW-GM alone spends $17 mil/year on Viagra, and your tax dollars are going to be paying for next year's supply.

I am So Sick of hearing

this shiny happy people "climate change" sheister wax poetic about socialism's (by a half-dozen synonyms) being the answer to all of our problems!

_UCK OFF TOM!

What I find amazing is this

What I find amazing is this PC fixation on hybrid vehicles and flex fuel.  Last time I checked a diesel engine is more efficient than either of them without the expense or starving the poor.  If they really were interested in fuel economy, then why aren't they following the European example?  I guess the only thing they want to copy from the Europeans is the high gasoline tax so people pay $9/gallon.  IMO, when it comes to alternative fuels, biodiesel is probably much more environmentally friendly and easier to substitute economically but then I guess that would miss the point the Dems are shooting for as it would cut into their tax revenue when people use french fry oil or other home grown thing to run their vehicles.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

Hybrid Electric Flex Fuel Car?!

I especially like the part about the hybrid electric flex fuel car requirement.  While you CAN make engines run on either gasoline (10% ethanol usually) or E85, you sacrifice effenciency and emissions in the process.  Through in diesel and bio diesel and you have pretty much an unworkable system (diesel uses no plugs for example, but gasoline and ethanol require them).  Much better to pick a fuel, and tune the engine and controls to run on just that fuel, like most cars today, which cannot take E85 (thankfully).  Now, on top of the losses with multiple fuels, we need to put huge batteries and a generator in these cars to push them around for 150 miles.  Great idea (not!).  Unless something miraculous happens in battery technology, this is not going to work for the masses that drive out of town (like me!).

Get out of my wallet, get out of my life

Enough with these bailouts and other assorted 'rescues'.

Look at how these large firms that are dying from the mortgage securities are handling their rescues - they're preparing to pay bonuses! Taxpayers are hanging on by a thread, many may lose their jobs or take pay cuts, and the stupidity of the last 10-15 years is being rewarded!

I say enough. There is this thing called bankruptcy court. Do it now or the whole country will go belly up in the next couple years {if that long}.

And when the country does fail, let's give a heartfelt thanks to the democrats for giving us lousy mortgages, and to the compassionate conservatives for being such eunuchs that they let those same democrats roll right over them.

Let me say it again.

Get out of my wallet, get out of my life!

The man is a communist. I

The man is a communist. I guess that's ok now.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

A brilliant idea!

Friedman has already expressed his desire to see the federal government impose laws as to what kind of houses we should be allowed to buy via the takeover of Freddie & Fannie.  So it's little suprise to see him advocate similar for the auto industry.

I say let the federal government run the auto industry for 4 years.  What will we get?  Probably something like this designed by Al Gore:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trabant  Except that ours will be smaller and more expensive.

Force American consumers to buy this garbage and in a few years they will be begging for real "change".

What gets me about this in

What gets me about this in vogue thing of government bailouts at the taxpayer expense is there is already a legal means on the books to save your business.  It's called Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, the auto companies could use this to buy some time and force a change in the union contract as well.  Airlines have done this frequently due to their sensitivity to the cyclical nature of their business.  This whole discussion over bailouts is a sick ridiculous joke.

The whole bailout of the home owner is similarly absurd since for individuals Chapter 13 Bankruptcy exists for this very purpose.  What's the problem here? Does anyone really think after negotiating with a bank like Citibank (in the news) or accept a government bailout to save your house that you won't have a mark on your credit record for the next 10 years?  This is totally absurd.

I really don't understand why Paulson didn't just tell the President and Congress to change the accounting rules on mark to market, this would have changed the amount banks needed to keep in reserve and therefore wouldn't become insolvent.  The current rules are an arbitrary line in any event used as a rule of thumb to cover everything.  There was no need for the $750 billion bailout because the whole premise was to pump up the REQUIRED amount of reserve under the Law.  We can now hear Dems whining that no loans are occuring, well DUH! Why in blazes would you make a loan to a borrower who will go belly up and put you right back in the same situation?  Jees, Louise how stupid can you Dems be?

Even the AIG situation really didn't require a bailout, they could have declared chapter 7 bankruptcy and made an orderly liquidation of the assets.  Everyone with the Credit Default Swaps would have been told tough cookies and thus the pain would have been SHARED by all involved engaging in this risky transaction, instead of dropped on the backs of the taxpayers.  Everyone insured by AIG would have had their policies bought by competing companies, problem solved.

The more I think about this the more I think this was a plot by Henry Paulson and some others to influence the election.  Novak fingered him as a lib in 2007. Libs (RINO) prefer libs (Dems) not conservatives.  I smell a rat.  This is just one more case of bipartisanship run amuck.  Crap on John McCain and his my friends, you guys screwed the country in the name of bipartisanship.  This just BS.

Agree and Disagree

FRIEDMAN: I think that's the question.  And I think the only way to do this is by basically saying to the leadership of all these companies: you're gone, the boards are gone, the equity's gone.

Up to this point I agree. But after that I disagree. It's called bankruptcy and the court determines people to better manage the business - not some government czar.

We're going to name a government master to come in here . . .

Here I disagree. What Friedman is calling a government master is socialism but I think he is too caught up in his own self-flagillation to recognize that.

The union deals with the big three car firms are not workable and if the unions are unwilling to renegotiate to a more realistic level then they should see what they get coming out of bankruptcy court.

In addition, I would like to see all three companies then taken over by one of the asian car companies who understand how to better operate in this industry.

TN Mom...

To add to what I wrote yesterday on the same subject... The big 3 are paying their assembly workers around $70 dollars an hour because of Unions. The other auto manufacturers pay around $40-$45 dollars an hour without Unions. Add in the rediculous benefits that Unions force on the auto companies and you see why the big 3 are in deep doo-doo.

A quick Union story. When I was 19 (loooong time ago) and very stupid, I had a job as a cook at a large Resort that was a Union shop. I got into an argument with the Executive Chef one day and I ended up throwing an ashtray at him. He immediately fired me, but by the next morning he was forced to call me back to work. The Union had stepped in on my behalf and told the EC that I could not be fired for such a minimal act. I went back to work that day, but sure was stunned at what happened. I kept thinking to myself... are these people nuts? I should have been fired. Even at the time, I knew what I did was wrong and SHOULD have been fired.

Some necessary Obama Bailout Questions

As
the Obama orgasm spasms throughout all except the economy in making it
feel good, someone besides Rep. John Boehner of the GOP asking about
ghost loans of 2 trillion dollars to who knows where and what that the
taxpayer is being stuck with in asking the real questions of just how
much of this government bailout money and financial disaster flowed
directly into Barack Obama's campaign funding orgy of 800 million
dollars.

We know for a fact today that the Democratic Party
BORROWED 15 million dollars for Barack Obama in the last weeks of the
election. Which banks did this come from and as homeowners were in dire
straits at the very least banks were giving Obama loans for steak
dinners and jet trips while poor people were being squeezed to pay
their mortgage.
At the worst, Barack Obama took money directly
flowing from previous bailouts or the 700 million dollar bailout
Congress voted for.

David Plouffe of the Obama campaign has been
emailing people like a vampire demanding blood from a turnip for donors
to pay even more money into paying off this Obama debt.
Howard Dean
has fled the scene and Donna Brazil if she takes the job is going to
inherit a vast pool of funding that demands criminal investigation.

For
all the complaining about CEO's getting bonuses from bailout money, let
us ask just what money flowed into Barack Obama's campaign from
troubled banks that taxpayers backed instead of having things like
school tuition to medical care.

I broke the story that the
funding of the Obama overseas campaign was coming in from counterfeit
money flowing into Middle Eastern banks, who then were using stolen
"dead" credit cards to flow that money into Obama's campaign.
We
know this happened, because one woman found thousands of dollars being
charged to her credit card donated to Obama which she never donated.

The
reason this matters is what I reported on in there is as the British
were warning serveral years ago huge doors opened to embezzlement,
money fraud and money laundering using credit cards moving money around.
Currently
American Express is reporting billions in losses due to repackaged
debt. I have maintained all along that the credit card companies and
American banks were being swindled to billions of dollars a year in the
counterfeit money flow.

To make this literal, let us look at Obama.

Obama
receives 300 million dollars from the Middle East. The said Middle East
bank has in it counterfeit money from Lebanon deposited knowing it is
bogus.
Said Obama operatives in the Middle East take stolen American
credit card numbers which if one recalls were all over the news just
before the Obama campaign decided it was going to raise money via
credit cards.
The operatives phone Obama's Penny Pritzker and donate
whatever amounts that showed up on their books which amount to 300
million dollars.

American credit card companies pay it thinking
they are being paid with real money from these banks. The operatives
pay by electronic transfers the credit card bill so no physical bill is
sent and the owner whether living or dead has no idea their account is
active as most accounts do not show year end statements.

The
money then goes into the Obama accounts in America banks and is paid
out to willing Obama sucklings all squealing like pigs for the Obama in
being funded by him.
For all the nonsense of Shep Smith not
believing the MSM is in the tank for Obama and made a difference, no
one has asked grinning Shep just how much 800 million dollars buys in
loyalty from the media.

In this money fraud, there is a gaping
hole just like if you paid for a car with bogus bills. Eventually all
of that debt hole starts showing up and that is something no one has
been daring to even write of except here.

I actually warned the
European and American financiers that their illegal credit card cash
cow was in jeopardy of being exposed due to what Obama's operatives
were flowing into his campaign. 300 million dollars for Obama now
exposing billions being laundered flowing into trillions of illegal
funds of human traffic, drugs, diamonds, weapons and whatever else is a
commodity for black market profit.

At the very least Barack
Obama is on record for taking 15 million dollars from a strapped
population in need of every cent to make house payments. At the mid
ground, Barack Obama owes 300 million dollars in money which should be
seized by the Treasury as it was fraudlent coming out of the Middle
East. At the maximum, Barack Obama is knowingly guilty of criminal
money fraud in taking a part in funding his campaign in the economic
rape of the United States.

Americans banks, American credit card
companies and America all in extreme trouble and the one person
profiting from it politically is Barack Hussein Obama and the one
person whose finance must be searched out in just how much bailout
funding was flowing to Barack Obama.

An audit John Boehner, audit Barack Hussein Obama.

Is there a reason why foreign car makers don't buy out Americans

I would think this would be a great opportunity for foreign auto companies to buy up their US competitors, keep their brand names and popular models, and shut down the rest.  So does anyone here know why we don't hear about this possibility?  Is there some legal barrier to that?  Would a buyer inherit onerous union obligations?  I'd really like to know.

As an employee fo the US government, I gotta say that the only thing we do well is killing people and breaking things.
Perhaps the latter is what Friedman wants?

Good luck to GM, Ford, and Chrysler. You knuckled under to the unions to gain a bit of peace and now are about to become dinosaurs.

Thank God Toyota relocated to the US in right to work states, otherwise we would not have an industrial base when Detroit becomes Beirut.
