Guess Who Sees MSM Double-Standard on Biden's Latest Gaffe?

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Guess who said the following this morning about Joe Biden's latest gaffe—his statement that America would be faced with a major international crisis within the first six months of an Obama administration as foreign forces seek to test the young new president: "certainly if Sarah Palin had said this, it would be above the fold in most newspapers today."

1. Brent Bozell
2. Rush Limbaugh
3. McCain adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer
4. Dan Rather

If you guessed 1, 2 or 3, you'd be a rational NewsBusters reader . . . but wrong.  Yes, the answer is 4, Dan Rather.  In true man-bites-MSM mode, Rather made the remark on today's Morning Joe.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The show led with a discussion of Biden's vainglorious gaffe.

WILLIE GEIST: Let's listen to Joe Biden in his own words, and then we can discuss it.

Cut to audio clip of Biden in Seattle, Washington yesterday.

JOE BIDEN: The whole world is waiting, folks. The whole world is waiting.  I know almost every one of those major leaders by their first name, not because I'm important, because they were young parliamentarians when I was coming up and we've been hanging around a long time.  I'll tell you what, mark my words, within the next, first six months of this administration if we win, you're gonna face a major international challenge, because they are going to want to test him just like they did young John Kennedy. They're going to want to test him, and they are going to find out this guy has got steel in his spine.

After Joe Scarborough reported that the Obama campaign is furious with Biden, Mika Brzezinski noted that there was only spotty coverage of Biden's remarks in the morning's papers.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Well you know it's interesting, because I'm going through the papers. I figure there's got to be, just as you analyzed, Joe, political ramifications to that comment, gaffe, however you want to make it—two in a row, though—but I'm seeing spotty media coverage.  I feel like half the media covered this.  I'm just going through the papers and seeing if it plays highly, and I'm not finding it in the [Washington] Post so far.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Well, let us just say it's surprising, and I would just throw it back to you-all and tell you what the McCain campaign is saying this morning, and what a lot of Republicans, they're asking really a question: what if Sarah Palin had said electing John McCain would create an international crisis because of his age. Would that be above the fold on the front page of the New York Times, the Washington Post?  Would that be a lead story? We've got somebody who's an expert in the media who I think, Mika, knows a lot better than we do, Dan Rather.  Dan, talk about the double standard.  Are there times that you would cover this story differently if Sarah Palin said it rather than Joe Biden? Not you, but the media.

DAN RATHER: Well I think the point is well taken, Joe, that certainly if Sarah Palin had said this it would be above the fold in most newspapers today.

Rather expanded on his comment, and while he was putting it in the mouths of "what happens on the internet," he clearly seemed to be adopting it as his own opinion.

RATHER: But let me point out that what happens on the internet may be as important or more important than what's happening in the newspapers.  And I'll be surprised, and you know, Joe, I'm frequently surprised, but I'll be surprised if this doesn't have a run on the internet, with among the points two that you raised.  Number one, if Sarah Palin had said this, the newspapers would have jumped all over it and so would have the major television outlets. And number two, they can't be happy inside the Obama campaign about this, and let me emphasize I've not spoken with them this morning.

SCARBOROUGH [who clearly had been in touch with the Obama campaign]: They are not.

You live long enough, you see everything.  Let me write words I never imagined I would: I'll let Dan Rather's statement speak for me.

Note: I just heard from the McCain campaign that Biden is off the campaign trail, with no scheduled events today.  Now why would that be?

Aside: If only Dan would have spiced up his commentary with some of his classic down-home shtick, perhaps something along the lines: "gosh knows if I were still at the Evening News desk, I'd of buried this story deeper than a large-mouthed bass on a Ju-ly afternoon."

Did Dan get the internet lesson the hard way?

But let me point out that what what happens on the internet may be as important or more important than what's happening in the newspapers

Hmmm. He has taken that lesson to heart. I hope he is right.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

If Sarah

Had said something this dumb, it's all the drive by media would be talking about 24.7 until election day. But since it was just the Naive One's side kick who said it, no big deal.

But it is true, for once OBiden speaks the truth.

BTW, we know Joe the Plumber has a tax lien, do we know who Obama's drug dealer was -- My guess it was him.

If Sarah

Rhino_itall

So true. Plus she would have been accused of being a racist. For what you ask? That's what i've been asking every time. They don't need a reason.

You know Mark Levin has been calling Joe Biden the dumbest man in the senate for years, and it's ironic that the one time he's actually right might be the best example of how dumb he really is.

Not only that, but when he

Not only that, but when he talked about his vast foreign policy experience (he's forgotten more than these other guys ever knew), what I got from it was that Obama is inexperienced, but don't worry, I'll be there to guide him.

If I were the Obama campaign, that's the part I would be having a big problem with!

Oh, and do you think we will be seeing assertions that Obama is really just a figurehead and Biden is running things, like we had with Bush and Cheney?

His judgment

Let's ask Obama the questions they're asking McCain: "What does it say about your judgment when your first major decision is to trust a man who can't keep his mouth shut?"

The sad part is that Biden is probably right, but what he said is a disaster, both politically and diplomatically. Any diplomat will tell you that you don't say such things because it accelerates the motive of our enemies to do exactly what Biden suggests.

By the way, so many people (Colin Powell, for example) have declared that Obama must be extremely intelligent because he can speak well. The fact that he speaks utter nonsense (we're who we're waiting for, we'll stop the oceans from rising) is ignored. Biden spits out these gaffes almost every day. So ... by that same measure ... what does it say about Biden's intelligence? Pssst - he's really not that bright. If you didn't already assume that Biden's many years on various committees and many appearances on TV proves that he's wise (which they certainly don't prove), Biden's performance at any given time would lead you to believe that he's a blowhard and a fool.

Is this really a case of

Is this really a case of stupid is as stupid does or is Biden intentionally sabotaging Obama's campaign?  When Biden was talking with this group in Seattle did he not know what he said would go beyond the room?  Is this a case where Biden may have thought this was an insiders discussion where he could cater to the loons of the party and not be concerned what he said?

When you look at all the gaffes in their totality, either Biden is thee most stupid politician in the country OR Biden is thee shrewdest on the order of Clinton.  Think about it, all the campaigning Clinton has done, it's been less than convincing and more of a Clinton adoration society meeting.  Even SNL has made a parody of it.

Here is my conspiracy theory of the week, what if the DNC decided that nominating Hillary would have lost them the Black vote permanently and they figured, heck, we have control of Congress and therefore the purse so what if lose the Presidency.  On the off chance Obama wins, at worst we will have a figurehead in the whitehouse since Obama being the empty suit that he is will take orders from us in any event, just like he did when we told him to vote against the Fannie and Freddie mortgage reforms in 2005 and 2006.  On the other hand if Obama loses, we still have the Black vote and have a compromiser in McCain which basically means most of our agenda will pass in any event.  We can't lose!

With Biden on the ticket, Obama, the order taker, can at worst be a possible loose cannon IF he decides to fill the suit.  Biden seeing that Obama may just fill that suit after all after overhearing Obama spout off in private decides you know what, I may be partisan but I'm not willing to sacrifice my safety.  The Iraq issue is essentially settled so the anti-war fringe of the Dem Party have nothing more to say and therefore can't pressure us anymore.  We have their money and their votes in any event, so the safest bet for my vested interests is to sabotage Obama and let McCain win.  McCain being the overly gracious person he is, will even seriously contemplate allowing Biden a role in his Administration.  Obama goes back to being a feckless Senator and promptly shuffled off into obscurity like Geraldine Ferraro. Democrats have a habit of not nominating the same guy twice, so any attempted repeat performance by Obama is not an issue.  He will be there to trot out as the token minority to placate the victim group in order to keep them on the Dem plantation.

This election is getting better and better by the day.

I just saw a segment on the Today Show...

...that asked if Gov. Palin is good for the McCain campaign!  The MSM is doing everything they can to cover up Sen. Biden's obvious mistakes and weaknesses while trying to create the opposite with Sarah Palin.  Wherever she goes she draws huge crowds and generates excitement and enthusiasm but, because  inside the beltway "conservative" columnists like Peggy Noonan can't stand her "doncha know" Northern accent, they report how she's a drag on the ticket?  The whole world is bass-ackwards.

"Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain." Official Motto of the State of Iowa

They keep trying,

But they can't stop her!

Palin 2012

Palin-Jindal 2012

How sweet would that be?

"Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain." Official Motto of the State of Iowa

That would be awesome

But it's not going to happen if Obama wins.

The democrats will be able to run against the "failed Bush policies" for decades.  The country will go in the crapper, and they will be able to blame Bush.

Palin has accomplished great things, while Obama has continued to make empty promises that the world owes you a living.

Agreed...

But they can only push "failed Bush policies" and such if they control the media completely.

Step 1) First year - Fairness doctrine:  implemented for radio public airwaves only (not television, which will be construed to have "no fairness problems" of it's own).

Step 2) Third year - Satellite:  while cable travels through privately owned lines, the satellite world also uses leased bandwidth.  Apply the fairness doctrine and FCC rules, but in line with radio, because of the high bandwidth available.

Step 3) Shortly thereafter - Cable: Cable and phone utilities will go through some "anti-trust battles," and the government will take ownership of the infrastructure, making it public and equating it to the interstate highway system and calling it necessary for "commerce."  Apply the fairness doctrine.

Step 4) Mid-Obama second term - Internet:  Because the gov will have taken ownsership of major communications infrastructure (they'll say "it's like the interstate highway system, it's the responsibility of the federal governement to build it out and maintain it for 'everyone.'")  now they will come up with the modified fairness doctrine for the "next decade."

You'll be able to say whatever you want, as long as you provide what the government approves as adequate balance.  There will be public news websites, those deemed to be "neutral" that will distribute official news from the governement.  We know what will happen then, and it's not pretty.  Gov going after minor infractions, eliminating web sites for "hate-speech" etc.

Orwell saw this coming, he just didn't know the media nor the means.  It's finally becoming visible.

good grief

We're screwed if he gets elected... bottom line.

Palin has accomplished great things, while Obama has continued to make empty promises that the world owes you a living.

I was going to guess Biden

I was going to guess Biden said it.

I thought Neil Kinnock said

I thought Neil Kinnock said it.

The Frequency of Bias, Kenneth

I'm glad to see that Kenneth sees some bias. I love how they forgive Biden on these things because he's a gaffe machine, but if Sarah Palin makes a mistake they rip her from the top of Denali to the Everglades.

Here's what everyone should consider while thinking about Biden's remarks. When the Russians invaded Georgia Barry Hussein Obama Sautero first issued a statement that urged the Georgians to lay down their arms in the face of being invaded. Senator Obama-Sautero tried two more times to get it right, and he never did.

Is that someone who has a steel spine?

For The Obama's sakes, I hope the McCain campaign is wise enough to put these two things together.

One question: Is

One question: Is there anywhere during this exchange where Rather says that this bias is a bad thing?

Excellent Question

No. He doesn't say it is a bad thing. Great point.

He has a steel spine.  He

He has a steel spine.  He kept it in his sock drawer.  Michelle found it and now she's is using it and won't give it back.  You won't see her bending on any of her positions or beliefs.

Very funny, Mr. Finkelstein..

Thanks for the rimsky

Thanks for the rimsky rim-shot!

yikes

You know it's getting bad when even Dan Rather points it out. I feel like I stepped into the Twilight Zone.

Change is what you're left with when you've spent all your dollars.

Yes, yes, yes, Biden stuck

Yes, yes, yes, Biden stuck his foot in his mouth yet again, nothing new here but that really isn't the story.  Think about what he said in context of Biden's and Obama's other remarks and connect the dots.

Obama - won't acknowledge the surge worked in Iraq

Biden - the surge won't work in Afghanistan (misquoted a general)

Biden - we have spent more in 3 weeks in Iraq than we have in 6 years in Afghanistan

Obama - people ask where I would get the money for all the programs I want to invest in, we would have money to spend IF we weren't in Iraq...

Biden - Obama will be tested within six months of his ascention to POTUS.

It takes lots of money to fight a counter insurgency program. Why? Because to do so you must rebuild the infrastructure of society that the terrorists destroyed and will continue to destroy again after you build it.  Only after the terrorists destroy something you have just built do people get fed up and say enough is enough because at that point they identify the terrorist as taking something away while we are the ones viewed as giving.   Do you do think it will be any cheaper when we ramp up for Afghanistan??  That is why Biden planted the seed that the surge will not work in Afghanistan by misquoting a general. (btw-misquoting like Barack Obama did with Kissinger) This is the double talk of the Obama/Biden ticket, they claim Afghanistan is the place where we should be concentrating our efforts, yet on the other side of their mouths they are already telling us they will not put forth the effort to defeat terrorism there.  Why? We have too many domestic needs.

Ask yourselves the question, where will Obama get all the money he wants to spend on his vote buying scams when taxing the rich and oil companies doesn't pan out?  Just where Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton found them, the military budget.  Out of a $3 trillion budget, Obama has implied he will go into the $607 billion national defense budget to get his money.  http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/year2008_0.html#usgs30230

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

Agree, with a twist...

You're right on with this post.

But i'll raise you a scenerio.  Not only will they cut military, they will increase "domestic" or "homeland" security funding.  Remember, a socialist government cannot expend itself on defense of it's borders, we proved that by outspending the USSR.

But a socialist government has to spend on "internal security," because socialism raises discontent.  Expect to see increased spending on police, both local and national, under the guise of protecting us from the terrorist threats that will "test" Obama, or even the real threats that Obama/Biden hope for to form their legacy and entrench their security policies.  You'll see increase use and abuse of ATF, the FBI, etc.  You'll see something akin to storm troopers employeed by the IRS, because collecting revenues will become increasingly important to fund the Obama programs.

This is not hypothetical, it happens when any country goes socialist, facist, dictatorial, etc.

Take the guns, expand the taxes, take the infrastructure over, expand the police powers, control the press.  Will make Waco and Ruby Ridge seem like the nostalgic good-ol-days of Clinton and Reno.

What kind of judgment does

What kind of judgment does it show for O-bomb-a to pick this putz as a veep?  Hmmmm?  Are they asking that question in the MSM?

Biden can always get out of this by simply saying he was merely quoting someone else...

Obama let one of the guys

Obama let one of the guys who brought us this current economic meltdown pick for him.  Let a guy who could run a government-subsidized loan company into the ground pick your VP.  What judgement!

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

Yes, but

this guy is a "gaffe" machine.  Is that all it is?

At some point, ie the FDR on TV about the stock market thing, one must start to question if this guy has normal cognitive function.
Reagan's critics got their views aired circa 1987-8, but
I find it so odd that the media wont tread on this delicate
subject:
at what point might the gaffes be more than "gaffes"

If this were a Republican, we would have had the media outcry
for neuropyschometric testing months ago.......

And here I thought Joe the

And here I thought Joe the Plumber was the October surprise! It's actually Joe "Blow" Biden...Imagine that!

Well the good thing about Joe..

See, the good thing about Joe is, he might not be done yet :)

Dan Rather

Who knew he was a racist

Obviously a peyote-induced

Obviously a peyote-induced revelation.

I agree with all of this,

I agree with all of this, that the media would have had a field day with it if Saracuda said it, that it probably torqued Obama big time, that him picking Biden is another example of Barack's questionable judgement and finally....I agree with Biden.  Those that would do us wrong will test Obama should he be elected.  Unfortunately for America, I believe they will find him wanting.

And I can already see the headlines following the attack blaming Bush.

“But maybe you obviously have a better memory about that."- Wolf Blitzer

Right

Those that would do us wrong will test Obama should he be elected.

Right, they probably will, but these guys have no reason to "test" John McCain. They know what he would do.

Let's ask a more prescient

Let's ask a more prescient question.  Would Hillary be making these kind of gaffes if she were VP?  NOT

Where is Obama's judgment?  If Biden is a typical example of Obama's ability to choose important people to be his partners then what about the rest of the people he will choose?  If Obama can't even make a good choice for VP for what is arguably the most important office after the POTUS, then is there any reason why he should do any better with Cabinet Officials heading various government agencies like DOJ, HHS, Defense, etc?

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

Hillary's out. Thank God.

Hillary's out.  There is a God.  We can always hope for another miracle....

Bottom line is, any potential Democrat can be construed as a poor choice for Obama.  Biden is as bad as any other, except perhaps Lieberman, but wait, he's not a Democrat anymore!

And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.   -- Edgar Allan Poe

What I don't understand is

What I don't understand is why Lieberman at this point doesn't affliate with the Repubs to hoist Reid on his own petard?  Lieberman surely sees that the far left loons have it in for him to oust him from the Party?

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

Is this what Dan means by the Internet?

Yes, it's youtube, but CNN isn't exactly the alternative media.  After viewing there's not much doubt that Oprah has a better chance at being Ambassador to Great Britain than Madame Albright.

Joe Biden's dire predictions

paulejb

Joe Biden's comments on an international crisis remind me of a line from Animal House. John Belushi's character, in explaining why a frat brother's father's car was ruined, says "Hey you  f#%ked up .... you trusted us." Can't say that old Joe didn't warn us.

"Hey you  f#%ked up ....

"Hey you  f#%ked up .... you trusted us."

Oh, Lord, I had forgotten that.

The all-purpose excuse.

Like Homer's "It takes two to lie, Marge; one to lie and one to listen."

(h/t to I guess a former NB'er)

MSM threw Rather under the bus....

....faster than you can say "Colin Powell" over the scandal a few years ago.

Sure Dan is a Liberal. He is also a pissed off liberal and his ego reigns supreme in his own mind. CBS should have protected him but they let him die one year before his 25th anniversary as head of CBS news, and, even worse, they gave his job, the same job once held by Walter Cronkite, to a no talent skank who giggled and jiggled her way into the chair.

That would drive even a far more centered professional close to insanity.

I am sure that for Rather a 1,000 year reign of President Palin would be better than having to watch Katie Couric skank up his news chair every night.

Wow I said skank twice! That must mean that Katie Couric is a...

Colin Powell's rationale

Well...this makes Colin Powell's rationale for supporting Obama even more dubious. In fact, let's look at Powell's logic.

He cliams he is supporting Obama because he feels that Biden because of his experience would be better as a VP to be POTUS. What Powell failed to answer is who  has more experience that is actually running for POTUS.

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.

Let's put a nice sharp

Let's put a nice sharp point on this little stick, Sarah Palin is at a campaign rally right now in Reno, NV, she's burning the living hide off of Biden and Obama, and where is Biden?  Sidelined for the duration because he can't open his yap without inserting his foot.  The MSM and old guard Repubs are in a tizzy over Palin saying she is an embarrassment, yet Biden is the one sidelined for having embarrassed Obama.  How did you like that stick in your eye libs?

Colin Powell represents the liberal wing of the Repub Party and they all don't like us uppity blue collar conservatives.  Well here's another stick in your eye, McCain wouldn't even have a chance without Palin, period.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

One Gaffe Over the Line

I'll tell you what, mark my words, within the next, first six
months of this administration if we win, you're gonna face a major
international challenge, because they are going to want to test him
just like they did young John Kennedy.

Duly noted Gaffington

Biden gaffes and why medical records didn't include brain scans

While I am glad Biden is alright healthwise what happens if something puts him out of commision Peolsi would be next in line. How freaking scary is that!!!

Now we know why he gaffes so often brain scans would show a flat line.... LOL.  Just kiddin...  :D
