Frank Rich's Palin Paranoia

A beautiful woman, at once a scheming, ambitious right-wing ideologue, and the powerful, evil forces behind her, plot to seize the presidency from the man—foolish enough to have made her his running-mate—who may be concealing just how seriously sick he is, both physically and mentally!

As the stuff of straight-to-video filmmaking, not bad, perhaps. But as the theory of an ostensibly serious column in America's newspaper of record? And yet, that is the paranoid picture Frank Rich paints today in Pitbull Palin Mauls McCain.

Annotated excerpts:

[T]he 2008 election is now an Obama-Palin race . . . and the only person who doesn’t seem to know it is Mr. Past, poor old John McCain.

Watch in horror, as the scheming woman plots behind the muddled McCain's back!

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

  • [S]till-unanswered questions about McCain’s health.
  • [I]nformation too “unclear” to determine McCain’s cancer prognosis.
  • [H]ardly any information on McCain’s mental health.
  • McCain is looking increasingly shaky . . . McCain’s “dismaying temperament,” as George Will labeled it, only thickens the concerns. His kamikaze mission into Washington during the bailout crisis seemed crazed. His seething, hostile debate countenance.

McCain looking increasingly shaky? I'd say the consensus was that in the debate he was impressively in control of his facts and his temperament. If he perhaps erred on the side of being too aggressive, it's hard to see that as a symptom of a man in decline, particularly in a man who's had a decades-long rep as someone unafraid to rub others the wrong way.

It’s against this backdrop that Palin’s public pronouncements, culminating with her debate performance, have been so striking. . . . [T]here’s a steady unnerving undertone to Palin’s utterances, a consistent message of hubristic self-confidence and hyper-ambition. She wants to be president, she thinks she can be president, she thinks she will be president. And perhaps soon. She often sounds like someone who sees herself as half-a-heartbeat away from the presidency. Or who is seen that way by her own camp, the hard-right G.O.P. base that never liked McCain anyway and views him as, at best, a White House place holder.

So the columnist is unnerved by the hockey mom, claiming to detect a lean and hungry look in Sarah. Scary!

This was first apparent when Palin extolled a “small town” vice president as a hero in her convention speech — and cited not one of the many Republican vice presidents who fit that bill but, bizarrely, Harry Truman, a Democrat who succeeded a president who died in office. A few weeks later came Charlie Gibson’s question about whether she thought she was “experienced enough” and “ready” when McCain invited her to join his ticket. Palin replied that she didn’t “hesitate” and didn’t “even blink.”

Please. Harry Truman is everybody's favorite to cite in these situations. A good Dem with a conservative streak, he's the perfect pick for Republicans trying to appeal to voters across party lines. To see in that evidence of an inchoate coup is nothing short of silly. As to Palin expressing to Charlie Gibson confidence in her abilities, can you imagine the MSM field day had she copped to the smallest of doubts?

So how can a desperate G.O.P. save itself? . . . [T]he debate reminded Republicans once again that it’s Palin, not McCain, who is their last hope for victory. You have to wonder how long it will be before they plead with him to think of his health, get out of the way and pull the ultimate stunt of flipping the ticket. Palin, we can be certain, wouldn’t even blink.

PDS reaches its apotheosis as Frank fantasizes about the Forces of Palin forcing McCain from the ticket. Richard Hofstadter would nod: this is the paranoid style in American politics writ large.

I Love the Smell of FEAR in the Morning

Ah..........Frank Rich and his ILK are Terrorfied of our Miss Sarah. He was a Moron as a Theatre critic and has just gotten crankier and meaner as he aged. I think the man may have an accident in his pants if he listens To Another Speach by our Bright New Star........Hope he keeps the "Depends" on hand LOL

"If your 20 and not a Liberal, You have no Heart. If you are 40 and not a Conservative, You have no Brain" Sir Winston Churchhill

The funny part of watching

The funny part of watching the panic among the propagandists like Rich and the other boys and girls at the NYT, is that Gov. Palin makes them look like fools, and she doesn't have to lift a finger. She is absolutely bulletproof.

The MSM cannot for the life of them figure out why she is still standing and, indeed, thriving after the last five weeks of them dropping bunker busters on Gov. Palin, her family, her career, her accomplishments. They haven't made a dent, and I think they are truly puzzled.

And the rest of the country is laughing their butts off at the MSM. Watch the stock of the NYT continue to slip into the quicksand.

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

More than meaner and crankier....

It is obvious from his demeanor and his words and from his own mouth that Rich has spent the better part of his life under the care of some type of mental health professional. The man is troubled by what he is and projects it forthwith with his very powerful but false pen.

Like lil' Pinchie Sulzburger he has accomplished little and done less in his very meaningless life...the life of a critic and commentator on the ACTIONS of others. He has neither dared nor ventured and detests those who have done. I know the type !!!! in this very small world we are divided by less than six degrees of separation so I know of what I speak...

Paarl of Rhodesia

In the first place, if this

In the first place, if this is now an Obama vs. Palin election, it's because the Democrats have made it one, with their almost fanatical obsession with her!

Rich has really gone off the rails on this one. He is creating a scenario in his own mind, and claiming it to be real,to justify his irrational hatred of Palin.

Now that's Rich!

The ever changing meme on Sarah Palin is breathtaking. Last week, pre-debate, she was a stupid rube ill-equiped to be Vice President. This week, post-debate, she's an evil genius plotting a hostile takeover of a McCain Presidency. Frank Rich should seriously consider going back to being a theatre critic where he can pound his keyboard weekly about artifice and fantasy without having to weave fiction on his own.

Frank Rich turns a deaf ear...

Since Rich is making it a Palin-Obama race, let's slightly edit this statement:

"[T]here’s a steady unnerving undertone to Palin’s utterances, a consistent message of hubristic self-confidence and hyper-ambition. She wants to be president, she thinks she can be president, she thinks she will be president. And perhaps soon."

so that it reads like this:

"OBAMA wants to be president, he thinks he can be president, he thinks he will be president. And perhaps soon."

Do you think Rich would precede that with the sentence:

"[T]here’s a steady unnerving undertone to OBAMA’s utterances, a consistent message of hubristic self-confidence and hyper-ambition."

Doubtful. I wonder why?

Frank Rich should listen to the kids in my VERY liberal town's high-school who are studying "Civics and Government". THEY are saying that Obama's talk is empty and that he's got nothing to offer! The kids are learning, and it isn't what teachers are expecting! Maybe Rich should go back to school and learn something from our teenagers.

Lots of us have no problem with Palin's confidence - she's a smart woman with something substantial to offer!

I can't stop

I
can't stop laughing. Is it more clear now, how leftist loons and the msm at
large see this woman? They see her as a treat to all things progressive, they
see her as Ronald Reagan deux, and ultimately they see her as the force that
will wake-up Americans so they can see who the real enemy is and that is the
far-left. Just like Ronald Reagan stopped the progressive movement of the late
70s and 80s, Sarah Palin could do the same and they are trying whatever they
can to stop her, but in the end Americans know better. Also it’s not a secret
that many conservatives don’t like McCain and the only reason they are behind
this ticket is Sarah Palin but that doesn’t mean there is an effort to take
McCain off the ticket, nor imply that he’ll die in office, the only people
concern with McCain dying in office are far-left loons like Frank Rich.

Well, it looks as if Frank

Well, it looks as if Frank Rich is not going to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket.

Yea, looked like he was leaning that way, but changed his mind at the last minute..;+}

Alaska Independence Party founder, Joe Vogler, Sara Palin's mentor. If this election wasn't so important, I'd swear McCain is intentionally throwing this thing

Independence Party

Sarah
Palin has nothing to do with the Alaska Independence Party. She has always been
a Republican and even better a Conservative.

Palin as Governor spoke at

Palin as Governor spoke at the Alaska Independence Party 2006 convention, not to mention the "first dude" Todd palin was a member from 1992 till 2002.

LINK

Looks like a connection to me, McCain has thrown this whole thing down the drain. I'm really wondering if McCain really wants to be president or did this "maverick" really defect to the democratic party 3 years ago Link and is now letting the dumbocrats win

»→ No blingaling

Where's your link that she spoke at the convention?

Looks to me like she welcomed a convention to Fairbanks from a broadcast setup in her office.

So, are you saying that because Cynthia McKinney is nuts, ALL Green Party members are nuts? And anyone who would speak to a gatherine of Green Party members must be in total lockstep with the nuts and therefore cannot possibly be mainstream?

OK, now that you've agreed about the Green Party, let's move to the Democrats. So, because Nancy Pelosi and all of her lib buddies in San Fran are nuts, ALL Dems are nuts, etc.....? Wait a minute, Cynthia McKinney used to be a Dem, so I guess they ARE all nuts!!! Which means BHO is nuts!

Are you a squirrel?

You have a significant list of nuts there.

Sorry, my bad

;>)

Bling, You're full of it!

Todd Palin has never been a member of the AIP as confirmed by the party leadership and neither has Governor Palin. That lie has been recycled about 3 or 4 times.

Then Mayor Palin welcomed the AIP convention to Wasilla but has never been a member.

When you have verified facts this blog is willing to listen, but this is total bull excrement and I'm guessing you know it!

Either that or you're just another libtard.

blingbling, are you spamming?

This is the 2nd place I've seen where you have posted the identical post.

Sorry to repeat myself but I also replied to your other post. Please explain your use of the word, mentor. I am also curious if you have a personal connection to Alaska politics.

Please come up with new material. This comment was just as boring and irrelevant as the first time you posted it on another thread.

Turn out the lights, Frank

So Frank Rich is still at the Old Lady. He must be the guy they designated to turn out the lights when they finally close for good.

the only part of your post that i agree with is the last sentence.mccain has passed up too many easy shots that 'he was given' to blast 0bama. it's like he's" taken a fall"

It's like they've never met a self-confident man...

What always amazes me about these pieces is the cavalier assumption that if McCain isn't horrified at how Palin has become the campaign's celebrity, he must be a drooling, senile idiot or the dupe of a vast right-wing conspiracy.

I can imagine there are a great many men who would be horrified, and would be trying to undermine a protege who showed the potential to overshadow him. Perhaps most men in the news media are like this.

It's a part of John McCain's strength of character that he chose her knowing that she would overshadow him in this way.

Frankie,

You need a reward from the Obama campaign for working overtime to get the guy elected.
The idea of trying to split the GOP with some Palin conspiracy is just a little to far out there though, for even you and that rag you work for.
I would tighten up that verbal sphincter if I was you.
