Chris, 40% Dem 'No' Vote Isn't 'Overwhelming' Support

Like an MSM version of Nancy Pelosi, whose hyper-partisan floor speech reportedly angered many GOP members, Chris Matthews wasted no time in trying to pin the blame for the defeat of the bailout plan on John McCain.  Appearing during MSNBC's 2 PM hour, the key to Matthews' argument was his assertion that Dems "overwhelmingly" supported the measure, whereas McCain failed to rally a sufficient number of Republicans.

Love the bailout or hate it.  Decry its defeat or rejoice in it. But one thing is clear: Matthews grossly misstated the facts.  Far from supporting the plan "overwhelmingly," fully 40% of House Dems voted against it: a margin of 141-94.  Republicans, the more free-market oriented of the two parties, were always more wary of the plan.  It was clear that passage was largely going to depend on massive Dem support.  If McCain failed to deliver, surely Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama failed as much or more.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Two-thirds of the Republicans voted against the measure that [McCain] said was essential. He said let's do it, they said, no, we're not going to do it.  I think that's the hard thing for him to explain. You'll notice that Barack Obama just a moment ago made clear he wants this bill to pass: his party voted for it overwhelmingly.

Matthews is entitled to his opinion but not to his facts.  40% "no" votes is anything but "overwhelming" Dem support.  To the contrary, it's stunning evidence of how unpopular this plan was even in many Dem districts.

Update: Appearing during MSNBC's 3 PM hour, NBC News political director Chuck Todd offered a much more fair-'n-balanced take. He pointed out that virtually every member in a tough re-election race, on both sides of the aisle, voted against the bill. He added that there was a lack of leadership on both sides, describing Nancy Pelosi and GOP leader John Boehner as being unable to deliver the necessary votes. Concluded Todd: "this was a bi-partisan killing of this thing." Even Norah O'Donnell pointed out that nearly 100 Dems voted against the bill.  Matthews is left looking like a hard-core member of MSNBC's Olbermann wing.

What a dumbass

Chrissy, the Dems control the House. If all their member would have voted for it, it would have passed. McCain had nothing to do with the failure, It was folks like us here that got on the phone or the e-mail and told their reps, whether Dem or Rep, that it sucked.

If pro is the opposite of con what is the opposite of progress? Congress!

Need Your Links

Hey, can you pass me some links? I couldn't find any wording on the bill prior to the vote, so I didn't want to make the call to my Rep. if I didn't know if it was good or not. All I heard were people screaming and saw them pointing fingers at each other. "Gives money to ACORN!"  "A bailout for the rich!"

You obviously managed to read it if you called to say it sucked. Can you pass me the link?

Prediction

Nothing is getting done today.

A compromise will be done and it will have McCain and Hillary's names on it, while Obama waits by the phone.

This is clear evidence of the horrific leadership (or lack of)  by Pelosi and Reid.

The more Pelose and Barney Frank speak and spew their hate the more the market tanks.

Also doesn't Barney Frank remind you of Otis the town drunk in Andy of Mayberry?

Amazing!

If the Republicans don't grow a spine and start demanding televised congressional hearings to get the truth out about how the Democrats failure with Fannie & Freddie are the major cause behind this, they deserve to lose the election. Every time any Republican congressman or Senator is interviewed, the first words out their mouths should be "Where are the hearings? We need to get to the bottom of this, why haven't the Democrats called hearings on this yet?" McCain has to be as agressive as possible on this as well. What are they all so scared of?????

"When a well-packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the masses

speaker a raving lunatic." - Dresden James

"What are they all so

"What are they all so scared of?????"

Probably the same thing the democratics are afraid of.

If the Repblicans and McCain DID kill this thing, that's another feather in their caps as far as I am concerned.

Chrissy

I saw the jerk's diatribe against the evil Republicans. He said the Republicans failed to deliver their half of the votes. You know, even Steven. Not once in the segment I saw did he mention the 94 nay democrat votes. To his credit for accuracy he said "the republicans acted like the opposition party." My God! Wow. He was also accurate in one other regard. He predicted tomorrow the media "will blame the Republicans and John McCain for this failure." My dog could've consulted his crystal ball and predicted that.

Bailout Vote

Despite my most stern warning, my Republican Congresscreature voted for this monster. What should be contained in my next note to him?

Hey Mark

Perhaps you could post a link to the roll call for this vote? I would, but I am at work and far too lazy. :>)

Hey Mark, thanks for that

Hey Mark, thanks for that great link, I've never seen that address before, it immediately answered what I was wondering about my rep. here.

When I called his office early this morning they said he didn't know how he was going to vote yet....

I made a few suggestions... I see he listened...lol.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

The Title?

Mark, the title of this bill was "BILL TITLE: To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide earnings assistance and tax relief to members of the uniformed services, volunteer firefighters, and Peace Corps volunteers, and for other purposes"

HUH? Our Congress is on drugs, isn't it?

Meh

Democrats, being Democrats, they hoped that if people read only the Title, and ignored the text, members would vote for it, rather then against it. They expect that if the Title is deceptive, or if the entirety of the bill is bad, except for two lines that the Title is then derived from, then members will be forced to vote for it, so as to not be seen as "bad" for voting for such a noteworthy bill... In other words, Democrats were playing politics, again, with members of the US military, police, firefighters and the like. They don't care about any of them... they just want to use them...

More of that liberal math, Mark.

How typical of Matthews.

The net nays, dems cancelled out by rep yeas, was almost thirty votes.

For Pelosi to blame this on the republicans is absurd.  She killed it with her big mouth on the floor this morning.

I agree Blonde but Obama and Reid deserve blame also

they ridiculed and chased McCain out of town saying he wasn't needed and was making it worse after first saying he was needed.  They have been so hyper partisan about this and that's why it didn't pass.
From the start - they left Republicans out of it. When they finally agreed to some Republican changes, they still had to demonized Republicans. Why would conservatives want to go along with it?

I don't think the Sheriff got chased out of town.

Obama was the one who looked around in a state of utter confusion and tucked tail, afraid somebody might ask his opinion.

"I've got a bracelet too" - Barack Obama

DOHHH-BAMA...

CA, Obama sort reminded me of Col.Blake on M*A*S*H when a (CIA) bomb landed in camp a did'nt go off. When Hawkeye & Trapper went to disarm the bomb, Henry was hiding behind a mattress with his helmet on. That's the image I have of Barry here, looking totally out of his element.

Obama ain't the empty suit some think he is, he is a hardline Chicago machine politician, he will use thug tactics when needed. He has gotten where he is by getting people thrown off the ballet, he has worked with very shady people who do their thing in the shaddows, & he does a great job of looking above the fray.

Pelosi, Reed, Dodd, Schumer, Frank, Biden, Hoyer, Murtha, Kerry, Boxer, & Feinstien to name a few, are not very impressive at working out deals that really help Americans who play by the rules & work for a living. The MSM tries to cover for them, & it's not working. That's shown by the fact that the MSM is losing viewers/readers/listeners, & that congress( run by the MSM's favorite libs) have about a 10% approval rating. The ratings for FoxNews & talk radio are strong & getting stronger, compaired to the MSM & congress, it speaks volumes.

"...it's still We The People, Right?"  Megadeth

Dee

I posted this morning that I thought the dems might bolt.  Which they did.  So much for Pelosi's inspired "leadership".  I think the outcry was much louder than what we heard from the Hill.

The politics that have been played with this is just incredible.  People are furious, the elections are going to be crazy, I think.  I don't know what McCain can do about it at this point.

Rough waters ahead.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

I agree with both of you - Obama bolted first

and McCain did make a difference in getting Republicans heard and some of their concerns addressed he was able to get it from 4 votes to 61.  Obama did nothing, Pelosi did nothing and Reid did nothing to increase support.  They all gave hyper partisan speeches.  McCain and Bush had not criticized or blamed anyone.  Only today did McCain finally place blame after it already failed.

I agree that it's going to be crazy and unpredictable.  There isn't a whole lot McCain can do because the media strongly spins everything against him and Republicans and refuse to report how this problem happened in the first place.

I read a blog today where a guy (and he had the screen caps to prove it) posted that youtube video (Burning down the House) that explained the crisis at an ABC blog and they deleted it.  He also saw another similar comment deleted.  They are not only keeping it out of their reports, they are scrubbing any mention of it from comments.  It's unbelievable.

It is the surreal season, for sure, Dee.

I've been watching Fox....the financial talking heads are all atwitter.

I don't know if you saw that "Where did the $700B number come from" post.  But I believe it.

I know someone who worked on the staff at the Fed.  The stories I've heard are frightening.  Alan Greenspan & Ben Bernake act like they know everything...in reality they know nothing other than "reality is perception".    The $700B number was based on nothing other than perception....make it big enough to make the "crisis" real.  Has my antennae twitching like a rabbit's nose.

For that reason, I'm loathe to put all of our eggs in one basket based on the advice of one man.  The collective wisdom of "the market" will get us where we need to be.  It might be painful, but the housing run-up was arbitrary.  Yeah, I'll take a "hit"....but it's a paper hit.

You ought to send your observation about ABC scrubbing their site to Noel, Mark, or one of the other bloggers here.  That is a prime example of media bias.  Great observation, Dee.

I know Matt doesn't read all of our comments on this site, but I'd really like to know what kind of traffic we get here every day.  Alot, I'd bet.  And we know we get some important readers, too.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Blonde - this bias is so crazy and out of control that there

aren't enough hours in the day to report all the outrageous things happening.

I thought about sending this to one of them, but they are probably swamped with stuff.  Here it is for anyone who wants to see the proof this guy has (screen caps) of ABC deleting comments that blame dems for the financial crisis

ABC deleting anti-dem (non offensive) comments on their blog

Send it anyway, Dee.

Even if just to the "generic" e-mail box.

It's good.  Trust me.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Gawd...and to think

Gawd...and to think Matthews want to be a Senator when he grows up...

He can't even add and subtract.

Why he'll fit right in with the majority of the dems...

....and the propaganda continues from the left...

Shuster is doing a great fill-in job as usual.

<edit> I stand corrected here, Shuster didn't fill in today, I guess it was his regular spot, if it is now a regular spot for him, for some reason I thought it was an hour later and he was filling in for Chris.

Barack Obama just a moment

Barack Obama just a moment ago made clear he wants this bill to pass: his party voted for it overwhelmingly.

Well what do expect?  Liberals think that Bill Clinton's winning with 47% of the vote was a "mandate."

While you all at NB are

While you all at NB are sitting around pointing fingers at somebody or anybody, I have a number for you $800 billion.

The above number is $100 billion more than the bail out may cost all of
us.  That is what Americans, you know us fat cats, lost in the stock
market in a single day - today.

I presume that you all at NB make money from the advertisements that
you sell on this web site.  If you look at Google's stock today, that's
how they make a living as well, you will see what your future receipts
are going to look like as reflected in their stock price.

At some point, you all at NB have to educate your readership.  The
Congress needs encouragement to act not who did what to whom and when.
Unlike the great depression, where they didn't act until there was
great harm on main street, we have a chance to get ahead of this.

Time is of the essence.  I urge all of you on this web site to
write, e-mail, or call your representatives and tell them to get behind
this bail out and get it passed.

Oh, by the way, even if this passes, we still have a recession to
get through.  Yeah, a recession, but not a depression.  There's a
difference.

Chrissy has become...

such an embarrassment! Matthews is such a perfect example of what I just posted on another thread...Liberals...all they do is talk, talk, talk...and they never let a little thing like the FACTS get in the way...Geez...

"...peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever." President Ronald Reagan, January 20, 1981

NBC Must Retire Matthews

Let's get real.  Even the most basic reporting class most certainly emphasizes using language that accurately reflects the facts of the story you are reporting.  Even a 5th grader would know that "60%" and "overwhelming" do not belong together.  His age is not that advanced, but something could be setting in or there could be some aspect of his lifestyle that clouds his journalistic judgment.  It really doesn't matter why, it only matters that NBC is a major news network and they need reporters and analysts with the competence to work at the highest of standards.  Let him go, now.

Yes Na... ....Free

Yes Na...

....Free Matthews Now....Free Matthews Now!

Great Points Everyone

These are all great points.  So, get Gov. Palin ready to castigate Sen. Biden and the Democrats on Thursday night.  This is the perfect opportunity to destroy them in front of the American public.
