'Dimwitted' and In Need of a 'Chaperone': Palin Has Press at Point of Panic

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

"I’ve gotten the scary feeling, for the first time in my life, that dimwittedness is not just on the march in the U.S., but that it might actually prevail." -- Bob Herbert, NYT, 9-13-08
Bob Herbert's item in today's New York Times, She's Not Ready, is not so much political analysis as a howl of MSM shock and outrage. No-o-o-o-o!, Herbert seems to cry. I can't believe this is happening to us!  Meanwhile, with condescension worthy of his ABC stablemate Charlie Gibson, certified Obama fan David Wright suggests that Palin has been in need of a "chaperone" on the campaign trail.

Annotated excerpts from Herbert's "She's Not Ready':
How is it that so much of the mainstream media has dropped all pretense of seriousness to hop aboard the bandwagon and go along for the giddy ride?
The MSM has hopped aboard the Palin bandwagon? PDS has obviously affected Herbert's faculties.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Ms. Palin looked like an unprepared student who wanted nothing so much as to escape this encounter with the school principal.
Could Bob be a little more condescending?
[I]t staggers the imagination that we could have someone no further than a whisper away from the White House who doesn’t even know what [the Bush Doctrine] is.
Wouldn't you have loved to have lined up a cross-section of 10 MSMers, including Herbert, before the Gibson pop quiz, and asked them to define the Bush Doctrine?
[S]he told the audience of soldiers that they would be fighting “the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.” Was she deliberately falsifying history, or does she still not know that Iraq and Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with the Sept. 11 attacks?
No; she was telling the truth.  Our soldiers in Iraq are fighting al-Qaeda, “the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.”
[T]here is a profound double standard in this country. The likes of John McCain and George W. Bush can do the craziest, most irresponsible things imaginable, and it only seems to help them politically.
The MSM complaint, the thing driving them around the bend, in a nutshell.  Yes, how crazy and irresponsible to choose a good, smart, principled woman instead of someone with the profound maturity and wisdom of a  . . . Joe Biden. They thought this election was theirs, and are now going through the stages of pre-emptive mourning.  For the time  being, they seem stuck on rage.

Meanwhile check out certified Obama-fan David Wright of ABC, reporting on GMA today. After airing the Obama slur about McCain being unable to send email, without providing the explanation, Wright continues.
DAVID WRIGHT: Sarah Palin will be out on the campaign trail herself today, for the first time without her running-mate as a chaperone.
A sitting governor, wife and mother of five, in need of a "chaperone"? Imagine the howls of outrage from MSM/feminist circles if such had been said of a Dem woman VP nominee.

The smell of MSM desperation in the morning.

Bonus Coverage: Don't miss the beginning of the video clip, where Barack Obama wanly attempts to reassure the crowd that "we are going to be hitting back." Scary!

Yeah, two weeks ago the local paper published a story indicating that in Cochise Counties US Representative race, Tim Bee who would normally be considered an outstanding conservative candidate was facing an uphill battle to replace Gabrial Giffords.

Giffords, who replaced Jim Kolbe upon his retirement from the house of Representatives last term is a liberal running in an overwhlemingly conservative county and likely only won last time due to the anger towards the Republican Parties abdication of responsibility.

Now, I cannot wait to see what the polls do in this race based on the Palin Effect.

The medium is the message

I think the media pulled a fast one here. Not about Palin herself … she did fine. It’s what they told us about themselves. They’re selling us a bill of goods.

The media certifies everything for us. We must trust them to protect us. (Anyone feel comfortable about that?)

Gibson absolutely proved McLuhan’s famous dictum: the medium is the message. The media wanted the country to know that they were going to vet/interrogate Palin and certify her as ready for public service. Forget all those campaign appearances, debates, speeches, and direct interaction with the public – don’t worry, the media is on the case. They'll make the decision for us.

Herbert has confidently asserted that Palin is not ready for the presidency, based on … what, exactly? An edited TV interview? Because Palin stumbled on Gibson’s reference to the “Bush doctrine,” which was a media-created moniker for a set of Bush policies? And that, THAT, disqualified Palin?

I think we’ve gotten carried away by catchphrases here. In the primaries, Hillary Clinton was trying to denigrate Obama, and she came up with the “ready on day one” quote. Now, just a few months later, the media is huffingly snorting about the Ready on Day One test, as if that was written into Article Two.

I’d be a lot more willing to listen to the media talk about Palin’s qualifications on Day One if they also examined Obama’s qualifications on Day One.

Lastly, Herbert is the classic liberal narcissist. Palin doesn’t represent his values. Therefore, he promotes to everyone else that she isn’t qualified. That’s as logical as saying that she doesn’t deserve to be vice president because she isn’t a Democrat. Or that she isn’t qualified to be president because she isn’t pro-choice. Or that she isn’t qualified to be president because she isn’t … she isn’t … well, Bob Herbert.

  • To make the proper logical distinction: You have the right to say that you won’t vote for her because she doesn’t represent your values. That’s different from saying that no one should vote for her because she isn’t qualified.

Do these people

really believe we would be better off with "Crazy Uncle Joe" one heartbeat from the big chair? He seems to me to be the kind to hide under the desk at the first sign of trouble. Uncle Joe is a dim witted underachiever who just might float to the top of the bowl.

That doesn't scare anyone on the left?

Crazy Uncle Joe???

Forget Uncle Joe, do they really think we'd be better off with Mr. Hope and Change?  Bob Herbert is in the tank for Obama because he's liberal and black.  He's opposed to Palin because she's conservative and white.  But WE'RE the ones who are racist.

And why are all these libs so convinced that John McCain is going to die immediately after taking the oath of office?  Do they have something planned?

The ego and condescension

The ego and condescension of Herbert and the rest of the MSM are just palpable.

The media seem to have adopted their own definition of  the "Bush Doctrine."

To quote Inigo Montoya, "I do not think it means what you think it means."

Charles Krauthammer, who actuall coined the phrase, explains it, along with how the MSM distorted it into something that it's not.

The really amusing thing is to switch "Palin" with "Obama" and "she/her" with "he/him", and "Vice-President" with "President", and for the most part, it is an indictment on Obama's inexperience and lack of leadership for PRESIDENT.

Bob - it's been prevailing in the main stream media for 50 years.  Where have you been?

And yes, Bob, I got the same impression - Ol' Charlie looked like a high school principal who caught a student at something and was in "break out the paddle" mode.  He was not an interviewer he was an interrogator.  His purpose and job was to denigrate and discredit Palin as much as possible before the country.  That wasnt an interview it was a inquisition.  And Charlie lost - big time.

ABC should be ashamed of itself for this putred coverage and spin.  She's a sitting Governor and has every bit as much, if not more experience than Obama....leaving only her gender to require a "chaperone".

I think you my drift...ABC is downright sexist with this comment.  No two ways about it.

What you'll see on MSNBC on Nov. 5 if Obama loses

Yeah, if the media's Chosen One doesn't win, you know we'll get another heaping helping of "the American people are just stupid" thing (just like we got in 2004), along with Olbermann, Matthews and Eugene Robinson concluding that "Sadly, America has shown the world that it is still a very racist country."

And of course, the Republicans will be accused of stealing the election, running a dirty, swift-boating, Karl Rove-style smear campaign, accusations of rampant voter disenfranchisement of minorities (citing an incident where a black man was ticketed for speeding on election day), etc etc etc.

Can't wait to witness the somber demeanor and pouting in the MS-NBC studios come Nov. 5. There won't be a smile in the crowd of Olbermann, Matthews, Mitchell, Maddow, Brokaw etc. The tone will be an unmistakable "What went wrong? What is it that the American people don't get?" (i.e., Why didn't they listen to us?)

The biggest problem I see

The biggest problem I see here is this shock has come early enough for them to try to head it off. In 2000, and again in 2004, the Dems and the MSM thought they had a lock, and didn't realize they were in trouble until the last minute (or later). So now they have a better chance to counter it.

But, at the moment, they don't seem to have a clue as to how to go about that. Their desperate "slings and arrows" are merely extending the damage. Imagine it: the "hope and change" ticket isn't the one with the truly "new" face in national politics on it! How did this happen? If you truly want "change" in Washington, "out with the old, in with the new," the Republicans offer a better example of that.

I just hope they continue to flail, rather than figure out a useful strategy to counter this. I can't really think of anything the MSM can do to redeem themselves in the public's eye. And unless there is a clearly defensible change in the Democrat ticket, I see no way out for the Obama/Biden team. McCain has set it up to make the Dem ticket seem "upside-down." The "apprentice" is leading the ticket, with the "experience" in the back seat. An attack on Palin boomerangs on Obama, and an attack on McCain basically does the same to Biden.

Brilliant!

We all know what the Herbert Doctrine is.

I'm close to NYC, and I'm making plans to be there on November 5 when hopefully at least some of these mediatards hurl themselves out of skyscraper windows ala the Crash of '29.

Palin is right

Apparently Bob Herbert uses Daily Kos as his primary source of information.

He said Palin was wrong when she connected who her son and his fellow troops were going over to fight were the enemy connected with 9/11. Herbert is under the impression that we are still fighting Hussein and Iraq. I guess he did not get the memo that Hussein was overthrown and is dead and that these troops  are going over to protect Iraqis from Al aeda and Iranian backed insurgents - -  and if he read the 9/11 report those people are connected to 9/11.

The only dimwit is Herbert.

Who's Not Ready?

Bob Herbert appears to be the one who doesn't understand.  For one, he quotes Governor Palin as saying that soldiers leaving for Iraq would be "fighting enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans."  Well, soldiers leaving for Iraq are going to fight Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda took credit for the 911 attacks. Senator Obama said in his campaign that one of his first actions as President will be to give the order to the Joint Chiefs of Staff to begin withdrawing from Iraq.  The Joint Chiefs have nothing to do with Iraq policy.  Who's not ready?

The Guy Who Saw Phallic Symbols In McCain's Ads...

Bob Herbert is calling somebody else "Dimwitted?" BOB HERBERT?  How DARE he!

Remember, folks, Bob Herbert is the same idiot who imagined phallic symbols in McCain's "Celeb" ad that featured Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

He told Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski that "The Leaning Tower of Pisa" and the Washington Monument was inserted into the footage of Obama speaking in Berlin alongside white blonde women in the hopes it would make latently racist voters fear that a black man might want to have sex with their daughters.  And of course, Ivy League-educated scholar Keith Olbermann (seriously, Cornell U., Ithaca, NY) just swallowed Herbert's assertion and repeated it on his show.

Doubt that what I just wrote is accurate?  Do what Olbermann and Herbert are too stupid to do: research my assertion.  Don't take my word for it, search this site.  Google it.  Bob Herbert is a racist moron, and I say that as a black man who knows what the Leaning Tower looks like!

I seriously hope that someone is keeping track of the explosion of ignorance, hysteria, and insanity that the Palin selection has caused.  I'm beginning to believe Sean Hannity may be right: This is the end of journalism in America.

"Well, I've got nothing against the press...they wouldn't print it if it wasn't true..." -- Joe Jackson, "Sunday Papers"

No one to blame but themselves

There are things about Palin I don't like, but I find myself defending her incessently because so many of the attacks against her are FALSE.  If old media and liberal (funded?) bloggers would have stuck to the real issues, they might have turned more people around.  Instead, they launched a lot of vicious, often baseless attacks that are causing people like me to side with her simply because we don't like the baseless attacks and misinformation.

"If this is how the left operates, I'm voting right" is what it's coming down to.  You're known by the company you keep and Obama's supporters are a lot of lying nutjobs.  McCain has put out some incorrect ads as well but being online a lot I just get innudated by anti-Palin rumors and I'm sick of it.  I'll vote for her just to spite the people spreading the lies.

This comment clearly works in favor of the Republicans but Barry can do nothing about.

I am really growing tired

I am really growing tired of all the trash from the MSM regarding Sarah Palin. Charlie Gibson's trick question was deceitful and intended to trip her up, and the idiot didn't get the answer right himself. Read Charles Krauthammer's article on this. He is generally acknowledged to have conceived the term "Bush Doctrine" and states that there are actually 4 distinct foreign policy stances that go under the heading of "Bush Doctrine."

Sarah Palin's original answer to the question was actually quite correct. But Charlie was playing Jeopardy or maybe "Name That Doctrine!" Rather than get Sarah Palin's views on the Bush Doctrine (whichever version he had in mind) he chose to fish around to see if she could define this rather obscure phrase. Not very nice and not very useful to the American people, who were hoping to find out Sarah's beliefs. But, naturally, very useful to the O crowd and those on the left.

I truly hope the American People finally get tired of this pettiness and the MSM implodes under it own bias, arrogance, and condescension. But I have little hope when recent fare on TV includes shows like "Hurl!" and networks like MTV and personalities like Charles Gibson.
