We now know the official Obama talking point on Lipstick-gate.
In the course of her Morning Joe appearance today, Obama spokeswoman Linda Douglass used the word "ridiculous" no fewer than six times to dismiss the controversy that has arisen since Obama said yesterday that you can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig.

Douglass was an ostensibly objective reporter at the National Journal before jumping ship for Obama in the midst of this campaign season.
Low marks to Linda on originality, but A+ in parroting the party line!

Obama is hiding behind 'ridiculous' and other denials
September 10, 2008 - 09:59 ET by c5thenAll they have to do is say that contextually he was referring to their new 'change' campaign as the pig, not any individual.
The fact that they are not making this assertion is proof that Obama was in-fact referring to Sarah Palin in his comments.
And this is supposed to be the 'high road' that Obama is taking? I'd hate to see what his version of the 'low road' is.

Come on, let's pick our battles better, this one isn't worth the breath of air taken to complain about it. There are plenty of other faults about Obama, let's focus on those and drop this particular attack.

gutter politics
September 11, 2008 - 08:12 ET by ChuckM from PAOne of the things that turns off so many people to politics is just this kind of thing, the petty, silly, gutter bickering that goes on between two persons every four years. Most Americans are sick of it and wish that they would just stop, BOTH of them. I don't care about Obama, but if McCain is a man of integrity, he should get out of the gutter and stop this stupid, childish play that drags everyone and everything down.
So if I repeat myself in various forums, I'm just trying to stop the madness.

If it wasn't intended, to be a backhanded/sly cut it wouldn't have been chosen for the speach.
Does the campaign think we're really that stupid or did they just make a critical Macaca like error?

September 10, 2008 - 10:08 ET by TuariEven by some miracle it was a mistake that Obama said that line, it has to be one of the largest gaffes in history. Did the teleprompter make him do it? He could of chosen countless other adages and phrases to use, but no, he chose that one. I find it extremely hard to belive it was not deliberate and some "ridiculous" mistake.

McCain Campaign Needs to be CAREFUL
September 10, 2008 - 10:47 ET by CaringwhiteguyThe difference between Sarah Palin and other "feminists" is that Palin has never taken the role as "VICTIM". That's what Alaskans like. That's what all of America likes about her. Hillary Clinton was always a "victim" of the meanies on the right and of the Obama campaign. The McCain campaign needs to back off of any strategy that begins to portray Palin as a "victim". She's a leader and a tough gal. Giving her "victim" status is could well be the same rope-a-dope strategy from the Obama campaign that McCain used to trap Obama on the "experience" issue.
Palin can take care of herself.

It's amazing to watch this
September 10, 2008 - 10:43 ET by Captain RepusIt's amazing to watch this mornings display of an entire herd of Obammy shills in total panic mode. In particular, Joe Scabborogh even let his fake Republican mask fall off and endlessly try to find excuses for BKO's moronic behavior. He repeatedly interrupted and talked over Buchannan as he discussed the idiotic tactics being used by the Obammy camp to try to cover for BHO.
The only thing missing from this situation is that Obammy forgot to put on his tank commander's helmet when he made his remarks.
P.S. Andrea, you are still an example of exactly what is wrong with journalism today.
Lakoff Framing
September 10, 2008 - 10:44 ET by redherkeyLet's not forget that Obama's campaign is one being guided by the careful framing of messages, as directed by Dr. George Lakoff.
When we hear both candidates introduce a meme in the daily dose of carefully parsed media bite, followed up by media kits with the same phrase and message, the message is not accidental. For the media to infer that Barry merely misspoke, or used an innocent expression many have used before, is an insult to our intelligence. This is one of the most highly coordinated campaigns on the daily selective framing of messages.
Incidentally, had Barry been an executive in our firm, he'd likely be scheduled for a sexual harassment workshop today, having used inappropriate inferences toward a female subordinate of a peer executive. "Smelly fish" inferences to woman are absolutely inappropriate, and as sexual harassment law goes, it's the use of demeaning language and its capacity to cause the target of the language to feel demeaned in a hostile environment that is of matter, not the alleged intent of the speaker. When in doubt, you simply don't utter such questionable lines. Smelly fish and pig analogies to women might amuse a junior high school boy, but have no place in the office.
Barry's reach-out to women can now be recognized as little more than a reach to pat them on the rear. It's consistent with his status as the campaign that has the most unequal pay for its women employees. As long as the women know their place as pretty little things and are "seen but not heard," they're accepted in Barry's office environment.

September 10, 2008 - 11:06 ET by kevinm13The MSM would be shouting for more than blood if the Republican candidate had said the comments about the lipstick on a pig. "lipstick" was planned as a bait
September 10, 2008 - 11:28 ET by Gary HallYesterday's lipstick on a pig comment was, I suspect, even more planned out, than Obama's "flipping off Hillary" stunt.
Obama knew that he could pull this off. He intended poke fun at Palin, via the skit, but it was planned so that the context was in line with comments about McCain - stabs at the usual targets.
As the moment approached, Obama grinned ear to ear, stuttered, looked around the room making eye contact -- getting the crowd to anticipate what was coming - and then he pulled it out and planted the bait. The crowd knew something was coming - he made sure of that. This is a deliberate effort by the Obama camp to bait the McCain camp, conservative bloggers, and of course, Fox News.
(Warner's catch of the cartoon, indeed might also be a part of this effort)
The Obama finger:
Obama is experienced at this: one might reflect back on the speech, when Sen. Obama flipped off (gave her the infamous finger) Hillary Clinton from the podium. That was thought out, in advance, of the moment. As he got closer and closer to doing it, he started stuttering, making eye contact with a few folks, and grinning ear to ear, and then he did it. He knew it was coming -- perhaps the grin and the hem hawing around was because he wanted to do it - knew he shouldn't, but just couldn't stop it... oh, crap -- here it comes anyway! One can almost hear his inner voice talking.. "Damn.. I shouldn't do this.. Oh oh - here it comes."
And he gets away with it.
This skit was better planned; I suspect as a bait for the right. They sit back and waited - and today? Millions of Obama followers, and members of the left-wing MSM are empowered to believe that it is all about the Right-wing media. He won. The bait was taken. Now, it's up to perhaps NB, and Fox news, to jump on the analysis - and challenge Obama on the stunt.
→ Good call Gary
September 10, 2008 - 11:35 ET by Cool ArrowBut I don't think he flipped off Hillary.
Obama does allow Hillary to do the campaigning Biden can't, and she makes a great cup of coffee. I think they'll let her stay on.

September 10, 2008 - 11:54 ET by Gary HallWell, CArrow.. you made me go back and look at the video again. I think I interjected Obama's lead-up to this effort [lipstick on a pig] with the "finger" episode; however, I think he flipped her off. At least he certainly seems to understand, and revel, in the fact that he understands that his audience thinks he gave Hillary the finger.
This time - this was planned as a trap. That's my guess. (;~> gary
Well, Gary
September 10, 2008 - 14:56 ET by BlondeIt may have been planned, but I think the plan backfired.
It makes him look stupid, either way. Childish and churlish if it was on purpose, stupid and ignorant if he claims he had no idea of the connotation of "lipstick".
And the plan backfired in a second way as well. His statement was arrogant and haughty. It just strips away another layer of the Emporer's clothes. The true Obama is becoming visible.
Either way, it was just plain dumb...go figure...a dumber Odumbo. (Wasn't that a movie?). :)

September 10, 2008 - 15:11 ET by Gary HallHard to know how these little episodes play out in the end, with the voters - but in the moment.. being interested in the MSM's take - and subsequent presentation to the voting public, this is what I see. Here's an excerpt in the LA Times today:
Ohama had hoped to bait the McCain camp on this one -- from looking at the MSM's defense of the Obama view, he did. We'll see (when the facts are in). (;~> gary
He's still hoping, apparently
September 10, 2008 - 15:18 ET by BlondeHope is not a plan.

It will be interesting to see if he tries any further lame/childish jokes. I think you nailed it....his "tell" is so obvious.

September 10, 2008 - 12:53 ET by zachlindWhile Linda Douglass is generally classified as an aging ex-MSM “reporter” I still wonder if Michelle Obama realizes the lady travels daily with her husband on a relative small airplane. I read in the Asia Times that Ms Obama played a major role in Mrs. Hillary Clinton not being part of the Democrat presidential ticket. It begs the question, what is the shelf life of an aging blond “reporter”?
