Hell's Snowballs on Steroids: Mika Knocks 'Liberal Elite' Palin Critics

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Thanks to Sarah Palin, the culture war has become a civil war—on the left. Mika Brzezinski bravely opened a new front in the conflict during today's "Morning Joe," repeatedly going after two female MSMers for suggesting Palin is taking the working-mom thing too far.

And, mirabile dictu, Mika even admitted to sensing MSM unfairness to Republicans.

"This is an argument Joe and I have about fairness and whether or not there are some sort of underlying unfairness when it comes to Republicans. And I just, you know, I feel it here,"  Brzezinski said referring to a Wall Street Journal op-ed by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman. Full text and commentary after the jump. View video here.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I've got the Wall Street Journal: "Let's talk about Palin's Family Challenges," and this is written by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman, Claire of course from ABC, Katty from the BBC; two women in journalism. This stuns me [emphasis added]:

(Quoting from article) It's important to understand why, then, Mrs. Palin has hit a nerve. It's not because she's a woman with children trying to do a man's job. It's because she's actually pushing the combination of professional and personal ambitions beyond the sensibilities of this generation of working moms. As women, we may be awed by her, but she's not necessarily a role model for so many professional women who now say they want to do it differently, that they don't want to do 150% of everything all of the time.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

So what you are hearing is less condemnation than a collective gasp of amazement -- and exhaustion -- at the thought of juggling five children, one of them an infant, and the most extreme example of a job with little or no flexibility. It would make supermom feel feeble. And we should celebrate the fact that all of this can now be discussed openly.

BRZEZINSKI [sardonically]: Great.

WILLIE GEIST: Aren't they just saying they marvel, that they are in awe, that they thought the lives were complicated?

BRZEZINSKI: What they say in the article is that Women have come so far, that they can be CEOs and we can do anything that a man does but we've decided we don't want to. And I think that's speaking for all of us and that may not be fair.

MIKE BARNICLE: A little editorial opinion there from Mika!

BRZEZINSKI: Well I'm just saying, I think there was a little veiled judgment that I don't appreciate, and I think that was incredible coming from two women that have benefited from the advances we have made and quite frankly the ability to bring our families forward and educate our children in ways that we wouldn't be able to if we didn't better ourselves.

PAT BUCHANAN: This is a surprising attitude from them, isn't it?

BRZEZINSKI: Thank you.

BUCHANAN: Why do you think they said it in this case? Is it because Sarah Palin happens to be one of us [conservatives] rather than one of them?

BRZEZINSKI: This is an argument Joe and I have about fairness and whether or not there are some sort of underlying unfairness when it comes to Republicans. And I just, you know, I feel it here. I'm not sure where this is coming from. It may be a woman thing.

Mika took up the theme again when NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd appeared later in the show. Mika read from the Shipman/Kay column, observed "there is some veiled criticism there, then continued.

BRZEZINSKI: Let me counter this with some thoughts of my own.  Because what I feel I'm reading here is liberal elite women, who can give 150%, who have the opportunity to give 150%, but don't have to.  What about the women out there who work three jobs? The woman who has three children and works the night shift and has to give 150% at work because she has to feed her children?  See, I think the choices are there for many reasons. And we're going to have a small group of ultra-educated, uber-excessive women in terms of judgment, judging her for this choice, as opposed to  applauding her for it.

At one point during the opening segment, Mika said of Palin "I am her."  If Mika can identify with the Palin as she does, and if others in the MSM will take on the Palin critics as she has, it spells deep, deep trouble for Barack Obama.

Looks like...

that olberman/matthews lesson had a great impact.   Temporary only.    I can only imagine the amount of emails, snail mails and calls the alphabet networks are receiving.   They've certainly gotten plenty from me lately.  This is their collective gulp.

Well, actually....

Well, actually it spells "deep, deep trouble for" Mika!

Any day now, be expecting that NBC announcement that Ms. B has been reassigned....to cover green, algae covered polar bears in Tokyo.....

If one really looks carefully at her remarks

It may seem like she's striking a blow for fair coverage, she isn't.  Then she effectively lets her listeners know which side she is on when she questions Governor Palin's alleged extremism in 'having it all.     They are having to twist themselves into knots.

Consternation in the Feminazi Ranks

The liberal elite media (especially the female gender) are on their heels in trying to come up with an explanation for Sarah Palin. Can't find dirt on her, can't condem her for having (all) children, can't, can't, can't and they are in a meltdown. Geraldine Ferarro is lauding Sarah and Hillary is holding back on criticism. The mouths (Olberman and Matthews) have had their hands slapped. B. Hussein Obama is gaffing away and Biden (who admits that life begins at conception) is out there somewhere?!  Of course the NAGS (National Association of Gals) aren't saying anything about how Palin is being treated in the press....not surprising. Double Standards abound. Send your money to McCain/Palin....keep this snowball rolling!

Well, looks like monkeys can

Well, looks like monkeys can indeed fly out of you know where.

Mika also stated that her own husband fielded 'MORE THAN 50% of the household responsibilities to allow her to do this job' (not an exact quote).

Obama to MSM: STOP HELPING ME ALREADY!

Got that right SOL

And McCain/Palin are saying "Please Mr. MSM, don't throw us into that briar patch"

I was thinking while

I was thinking while watching this this morning that McCain and co are geniuses for picking Palin.

Fascinating to watch the supposed advocates for woman's rights calmly saying things like "let's face it. men and woman are different" (some "journalist" on MTP yesterday) when trying to defend the attacks on Palin and the double standards being applied.

McCain/Palin

Just watched McCain and Palin in Missouri

on Fox.   I have never, never seen such

enthusiastic crowds shouting after Sarah

talks, and even John Mc Cain was actually

shouting and getting animated unlike his

previous campaigning.    It was great!!!!

Hope this keeps up.   The enthusiasm from

the crowd was fantastic.    Go McCain/Palin

merlin... I just posted

merlin...

I just posted about that too...I just caught somewhat towards the end of her speech...talk about a crowd being revved up, heck I was in the middle of making a cake and getting revved up too!

McCain needs to just stand by and smile..let her do it all...lol.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Funny how when even a liberal man says....

....that men and women are wired differently (can you say Larry Summers?) he gets his head handed to him, but when a lib woman says it............

It's a crock of

It's a crock of poo...

The fact these two women found a way to hear "less condemnation than a collective gasp of amazement" says it all.

This isn't "veiled judgement": it's only veil is that it isn't rabid dog attacking like most of the other stuff out there.

But it is clearly passing judgement.

And it is stunning hypocrisy.

It is telling all of us that those sensible working women out there are lined up against the craven ambition of this Palin who -- tossed womanhood and motherhood aside --- for the Republican party.

And it is a crock of poo - if you've paid attention to what we've been hearing the last couple of decades from these same groups.

What the [bleep] happened to Murphy Brown?!!?

I thought giving a 150% and eating your cake too was the crowning achievement of womanhood.....???? (without the man too boot....)

Is Palin having to give 150%? She's got a husband, right?

But that's also my point overall:

--- what happened to men these last couple decades of championing Murphy Brown....???....

What happen to the role of the father?

They were systematically buried by these groups and many of these same types in the media.

But a Murphy Brown was the role model: A woman who could do it all - alone --- and when she felt like it - even throw in motherhood too.

----and these very same real-life female reporters would have been spitting blood angry at anyone who dared question that a ---- single mother ----- all alone in the world ---- could NOT have any and every success in the world + raise a healthy, well-adjusted child!!!

I thought it didn't matter if a woman went the Oprah or the Martha Stewart route.

When did the kids become a liability to gaining the support of the feminist establishment?

(I guess when Palin got nominated........)

I guess all those Murphy Browns --- all those single mom's out in the corporate and business world ---- have to be tarred and feathered now.........

And wasn't it .........

vice-president Dan Quayle who started it?

Quayle, aides explained, meant to "stir a debate" over "family values"
and Hollywood's treatment of them. And so he did. A New York Daily News
headline set the tone: QUAYLE TO MURPHY BROWN: YOU TRAMP! Switchboards
at the White House and on TV and radio talk shows lit up with callers,
pro and con. Carl Rowan, a liberal black columnist, sided with Quayle,
while Hillary Clinton, wife of the Democratic presidential contender,
panned him as typical of "an Administration out of touch with America"
and its growing ranks of single mothers.

Bravo Mika...I saw all

Bravo Mika...

I saw all this early this morning here...

Mika spoke volumes for all real women everywhere...volumes.

Katty Kaye and Claire Shipman are such fools...talk about being blatantly obvious...and Katty can't even be Katty with any degree..what elitist snobs who are so in the tank for Obama they would sell their own reputations...such as they ever were to begin with.

Palin Power indeed...

The leftists are running so scared now that this is getting to be fun watching them all devour each other, what is shameful is how fast the women are doing it to themselves on the left side of the aisle.

By the way, what Buchanan said was the truth...it is because she is a woman with an 'R' behind her name...a strong one at that ..who is going to clean their clocks with smiling ease.

If it wasn't for Palin McCain wouldn't of made the 11 point gain in the USA/Gallup poll..he's better keep her very close by his side where-ever he goes....let her do the talking John, you just smile and say a few words here and there and you've got it in the bag.

Once again, it was nice to see Mika be fair and balanced, let alone upset with these two gals who are helping our side of the aisle...I personally hope these kind of people keep up the attempt at smear with BS...no matter how pitiful it is.

Buchanan-Brzezinski Alliance!

Greetings, BT.  I, too, noticed the "nazi sympathizer" Pat Buchanan jumping in to support Mika:

"PAT BUCHANAN: This is a surprising attitude from them, isn't it?

BRZEZINSKI: Thank you."

I commented to Kathleen Irish earlier that this whole destruction of the Palin family operation is really touching an emotional chord in the women of America and two of the big reasons are:

1. The picture of that little girl holding and pasting down her brother's hair.  That had America's men jumping out of their seats, imagine what it did to the hearts of the women???

2.  The tabloid tactics in trying to destroy Palin and her 17 year old daughter.  There are not many of us on either side of the aisle that have not been touched in some way by the emotional trauma that comes with an unplanned and unwed pregnancy.

An emotional chord has been touched in the hearts of women (and many men too) on both counts, liberals as well as conservatives.  While I don't expect many of the card carrying, ivy league type women to actually cross over, many regular hard working, family raising women who see this can't help but notice the unfairness of what is happening and how their supposedly enlightened "sisterhood" leaders are twisting themselves into pretzels trying to destroy this woman.

I'm so glad there are some liberals decent enought to speak out

Mika and Kirsten Powers, and Geraldine Ferraro and a few others are realizing how horribly unfair this is.  Everyone has their light bulb moment with  the lies of liberalism and hopefully these people will start to turn on the flawed philosophy.

I'm sure these people will still vote for Obama but they are starting to see things differently.

Dee

I agree, especially on Kirsten Powers.  It looks like her feminism is more in favor of the advancement of all women rather than just those who check the Pro abortion square.

Rocky & Bullwinkle '08

We'll see, won't we?

When Palin is elected.    Don't look for support.

Mearline - I doubt these people speaking out will attack her

motherhood even if she becomes President in 2012.  They will attack policy sure.

Cool - I have been gaining more respect for Kirsten

I heard her the other day saying that NOW is a sham organization and they should just be honest about what they are about and it's not women.

I used to be pro-choice and contributed to NOW.  It was their propaganda in the mail that started to turn me around.   Once you see one lie, you start wondering what else they are lying about.  It wasn't until I got pregnant (unplanned) and had my son that I realized the extent of all the lies.

Yeah, Dee

I think what she said was they should be dcalled the National Organization of Liberal Women

Rocky & Bullwinkle '08

una mas

Dee, add Susan Estrich to that list.

What's the difference between Barack Obama and Sarah Palin?
One is eye candy while the other kills her own food.

MSM on Defense

Careful though, this could all be a ruse. I predicted on day one that the unfair attacks on Palin would come back to bite the MSM in the butt. Even to the point where they would lose ratings dramatically. There has been a huge backlash and these stations are toning it down considerably. The only way the voters can look at her objectively is if the media does. Until then, women and conservatives will be in defense mode.

Mika has been hot under the collar

About Sarah Palin's treatment by the liberal elites since last week.

I suspect her "change of heart" is the real deal, unlike her cohort Andrea Mitchell.  Mika was truly angry at the double standard (she actually jumped out of her chair last week in total disgust at a panelist's stupid comment), particularly in regard to the unfair reporting around Palin's family situation.

Geraldine Ferraro, somewhat to my surprise, has also been out-spoken in her criticism of the media's treatment of Sarah Palin.

If someone like Mika, who has so obviously been in the tank for Obama, has this kind of reaction to the MsM idiocy, imagine how the "average" female Hillary voter is going to react.

This blatant bias has people really furious.  MSNBC's demotion of Obie & Chris indicate to me that they are finally starting to get it.  Too bad they picked Dick Gregory....I'd have preferred Chuck Todd, but he's not as well know.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Blonde, you're so right

Blonde, you're so right about Mitchell. She is disingenuous at best and is obviously only covering her own ass.

Her most memorable moment in this whole election will be her epic balloon battle at the RNC.

Yep I heard Mika last week

Yep I heard Mika last week too...she wasn't happy then either with the blatant smear tactics against Palin, I was glad to see it.

...as far as Chucky T...I feel different, I think Gregory would do just fine. I've watched Chucky since he has been on segments of the Washington Journal from the Hot line I think it was.. Anyway this morning I heard him twice on different segments, one on Joe's show, the other on with Lauer, more or less just pooh-poohing the USA/Gallup poll numbers..saying they were erratic on with Lauer for one example...

Seems funny, he has always seemed to like them just fine before all these years, as long as sways to the positive for a dem.

Don't get my wrong, he has come a long way, he never makes me as furious as he used to...he will do just fine in the future...I think I've seen him with his own hour spots here and there on msnbc lately.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

I think Mika's scared for

I think Mika's scared for her job, especially in light of the fall of the "darlings" of MSNBC, KO and Chrissy.  If it can happen to them, then it can surely happen to her.  I don't trust that she was sincere...But, I was still glad to hear it just the same.

I heard that Andrea Mitchell, the other day, said that only stupid people will be voting for Palin...oh, really?

Strange Bedfellows

Scarborough must have fainted at home. I'm sure that he wishes that he hadn't been absent. After watching Mika hold nothing back and then Buchanan egging her on, I immediately checked other stations for reports of cats sleeping with dogs.

That said, you could see this rising to the surface last Thursday or Friday. This is a big deal to Mika. She seemed a little put off by the coverage up through Tuesday or Wednesday of last week. But when Sally Quinn and some other writers started trashing Palin about her choices, Mika had seen enough. If the media keeps trashing Palin along these lines, I half expect Mika to show up next week with a McCain-Palin shirt on.

Beyond Mika's unrestrained display of contempt for media elites, it's funny to watch Harold Ford's reaction to events. He's usually pretty even-tempered in his support for Obama. But today, in a later segment in which they were discussing the race going forward, he and Buchanan were getting into it a bit. I think Harold was restrained when he thought Obama could go on cruise control until the election. I'm beginning to wonder whether Harold has more at stake in Obama's election than meets the eye. He's not in office now, and maybe he's eyeing an appointment in an Obama administration. Whatever the case, he seemed a bit strident in both his advice to Obama's campaign and in his defense of the same campaign.

Sam-Oh... I sure agree

Sam-Oh...

I sure agree with you about Harold, I too have always felt he was going to be getting appointed to something in the Obama administration...glad I haven't been alone in my thinking.

Forgive me all...

If I say I don't trust some in the MSM sudden about face. Personally it has more to do with damage control then a sudden change of heart, especially from the female side of the MSM who thought every woman in America was going to be on their side when they started attacking Palin. Their just trying to cover their @$$es that's all nothing more.

I'm with you...

I'm not celebrating at these fake 'turnarounds'.  And defending Palin now on her motherhood does not mean they won't be attacking her on it once she gets into office.   THAT happens all the time.  They aren't capable of hypocrisy because they are ALWAYS right even when their arguments are pure idiocy.   None of this gives me pause to even delight in it....i'm waiting for the other shoe to drop....and you all should be too.    Lieberals RARELY change their spots.    There's something else going on here and it will turn up in another few days.

Making Fun of AGW http://giovanniworld.wordpress.com/

Their bluff has finally been called

For decades the liberal left, NAG and womans' groups have said women could have it all, do anything, be anything, have kids, be a CEO, a publishers, in other words a Professional with a career. Well, John McCain found such a woman in spades who happens to be by all accounts an ultra conservative and the left does not know whether to wind their watches or soil themselves. Their own words are now haunting the hell of them. They find themselves playing a game of politicalTwister, trying to touch all the spots while not falling on their collective ass. Trying to parse the topic without blowing their own covers and it isn't working worth a flip. Everyone sees them for the hypocrites that they are and that annoys the hell out of them too. I thought the day she was announced by McCain as his runnning mate that if you could create a candidate (like in the movie Weird Science) it would be just such a woman as Sarah Palin. Her name came up months ago and I had to go search the internet to learn who she was. I was blown away then but thought never in a thousand years will McCain pick her. Prayer does work!

I think they manuvered Obama to pick some old Washington dead wood by pointing out and hammering on his lack of foreign policy experience. They knew he would not, could not pick Hillary. Him picking Joe Biden was divine intervention. He is practically an incarnation of Foghorn Leghorn when it comes to running his yap and between him and OB they will hang by their own words.

I have just one thing to say further. Never play poker with John McCain.
Obama put all in with a weak hand and Mac called the bluff with a barn
burning hand and he knows it. He played it perfectly, from the choice to the timing of the announcement. Don't mess with old people, they'll kill you. Remember, McCain was an "Attack" pilot and one of their favorite tactic is come at you out of the sun so you can't see them coming till the bomb is already released and on target.

Bubbles, is this YOU?

Bubblicious?  Hello?

Are all the Libs now lurching toward center to show the adults in Fairfield that they are going to play ball - fair and square?

Obama: "this is not the Bubblicious I once knew"

Mica

Last week was bringing up about the double standard. So this is no surprise.Give credit where credit is due.Kirsten Powers has always be pretty straight up.I dont agree with her on issues most of the time but that is the great thing about our republic. We have the right to disagree. There are folks out their like Susan Estrich and Geraldine Ferraro who do have principles. They may not agree with Sara on the issues but they have called the msm on the double standards.

This Palin phenomenon is

This Palin phenomenon is astonishing.  I don't recall ANY of the liberal sisters coming to the defense of Secretary of State Rice....

Rice wasn't attacked for being a woman - she was attacked for

her race.  It is amazing that Black people didn't stand up for some of the Aunt Jemimah and uncle Tom implications but they are much more easily kept down by the scare tactics of the dems than women are. Many liberal women have husbands who are conservative and they don't buy the lie that Sexism is a Republican thing.

There were a couple of comments about her choice not to have a family and implying that she was too ruthless because of that, but they never had the kind of traction that these Palin smears have had.  If they did, I think some of these same women would have spoken up for her.

Good points Dee. It made

It made me angry then, as it does now.

Of course we could all speak up here, but waiting for that to happen elsewhere was useless.

Hi BT

I just really hope that some day people of color wake up to the Dems dirty tricks and demagoguery.  Some have and we've even had a few post here. Some one else we're missing here!

So Mika is leaning right and Andrea is covering her butt and Geraldine Ferraro is pissed because of the way she was treated by the Obamamaniacs but there's someone else we have'nt heard from: Iron Pants Clinton.  She has not adressed this nomination yet.  My guess is she is waiting for an offer from Hussein.  My other guess is that Sarah Palin would make Moose meat of her as well as ol Joe Biden.
