Did Michelle Obama Suggest Sarah Not Smart?

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Check out this [emphasis added] excerpt from an LA Weekly report on Michelle Obama's appearance at a private fundraiser last Wednesday in the ritzy LA neighborhood of Holmby Hills.  Mrs. Obama was addressing a crowd that reporter Patrick Range McDonald described "heavily entertainment-industry."

Obama then moved on to politics, where she first brought up her husband’s vice-presidential choice. “I think it was a really good pick—Senator Joe Biden,” she said, and later added, “People say they have amazing chemistry, and it’s true.”

Obama continued with talk about Biden when she said, “What you learn about Barack from his choice is that he’s not afraid of smart people.” The crowd softly chuckled.

Why would the crowd have chuckled, unless they sensed Michelle was making a little jibe at Sarah Palin's expense?  Calling on the MSM to ask Mrs. Obama just what she was implying.

Note: The article mentioned that the "minimum contribution for a guest was $1,000 to get through the door. Supporters who raised $25,000 were given access to a VIP room."  What, no Champagne Room? Thankfully, no report of any NFL players being injured in a skirmish in the parking lot after the event ;-)

I don't know, Mark, there

I don't know, Mark, there isn't a lot to go on this one. I'd have to say "Who knows" and not try to make any more of it than that. Especially when we have so many other obvious and blatent bias examples to choose from these days.

Perhaps. But let's not

Perhaps. But let's not forget the timing.  Mrs. Obama made the remark on the very night that Sarah Palin was to be giving her RNC speech.  There's no audio of which I'm aware, but imagine the sentence with an italicized "he's not afraid."

He's not afraid. But he

He's not afraid.

But he should be, if he's even thinking of matching wits with Sarah Palin.  That would be a debate I'd pay real money to see.  Like they say, don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

Uh, uh, oh, uh...um....well like I said, um.

vs.

Lipstick on a pitbull.

The thing about Sarah Palin is she doesn't need to be overly sensitive about Barack's race.  She can take him on in the arena of ideas, while ignoring the race card.  She doesn't ever need to play it.  She's younger, smarter, and female.  Trumps the race card.

This is really getting to be too rich.

As the young people often say, I wouldn't go there...

As the young people often say, I wouldn't go there and neither should Michelle.

LOL

Mrs. "O" Dumby.

Now theres one smart Chick.  NOT!

Shes just another one sucking of our tax dollars for doing nothing.

How can she be doing her job in Cal?

$300,000.00 A year? We only pay the Pres. 4 and some.

Oh, but she works in a

$300,000 a year?

Oh, but she works in a "helping" industry!!

I noticed that when she did that spiel, she didn't suggest to the audience that they get on the board at a hospital...only that they become nurses or social workers.

You could

hire 6 Nurses for $300,000.

Just saying.

Affirmative Action

BigSpoon65

First off, I know that Sarah Palin didn't need "affirmative actions" lowered standards to enter her college.  Michelle did.  Secondly, Michelle mysteriously got a $200,000 salary bump after Obama secured a bit of pork ($1,000,000) dollars worth for the hospital Michelle works for.  You can probably guess which happened first.  This woman has zero room to knock anyone elses intelligence.

Conservative.....Because we can't all be on welfare!

Matthews

On MSNBC just now Matthews was trying to associate Palin with the worst he could. The words he used will tell you all: white, ethnic, troublemaker, inner city, Al Sharpton. He was trying to say the Republicans were putting her forth as appealing to racists, pure and simple. I am sure NB will pick up on this later. It was a pretty nasty hatchet job, and he hadn't got to "The Bridge" yet.

Jay: caught that and might

Jay: caught that and might blog on it later.

Aaaah the memories of Sanford & Son...those were the days.

Biden?

I'd like proof that she actually meant Joseph Robinette Biden is smart. That's what's hard to believe.

I'm a lawyer--I know a dig when I hear one

Okay missie Michelle,

Cut the digs, okay?

I'm a smartie pants female attorney and I'll take you on any day. Cut the crapola, okay?

Ms. Palin is quite smart, thank you very much. Smart enough to take on the Republican establishment in her own state and win.  Yes, I said, win.

Smart enough to save the taxpayers in Alaska millions of dollars in wasteful government spending.

Smart enough to manage an entire state.  Have you ever done this?  Has your husband?  Has Biden?  The answer is "no."

So stop the digs.

Go back to corporate America where you belong.  And P.S., it's not a crime to make money. You've been doing it.

Hey now, Attorneygirl, that

Hey now, Attorneygirl, that sounds like blasphemy, to suggest that the lovely and gracious Shelly O is making money! You know she's above all that, and all about helping. Hell, you've heard her talk about how she and Barry have had the scrape by with her crummy little salary, all while suggesting young people forget about a crummy little salary like hers and work at helping -- just like she does. They put their designer clothes on just like we do and I'm sure they cut coupons from one of the many fine nonpartisan newspapers in Chicago and stock up on bulk items at Sam's Club or Costco.

No, ma'am, not Lord and Lady Obama.

And please forgive me for getting sarcasm all over you :-)

If BO wants folks to lay

If BO wants folks to lay off criticizing his wife, then perhaps she should lay off criticizing other candidates (though we don't know for sure that she was doing that in this instance). Nevertheless, when she steps into the political arena to attack the other side (which she is wont to do), then she should expect to receive some replies that may be less than complimentary.

She appeared at a campaign

She appeared at a campaign fundraiser, and talked about the campaign. Doesn't matter if it was a shot or not, it was political.

As far as I'm concerned, she's in the ring. She's placed herself in the ring.

I was going to comment....

along these lines at the end but if you all don't mind, I will interject here. Ohhbama says his wife and family are "out of bounds"? Then put them on the sideline and tell them to be quiet or face the retort from conservatives who do not quite believe what you believe.

Well, Mrs. O...Smart people, REALLY smart people are deathly afraid of you and your man... because we know what you are capable of.

On the subject of Biden, she

On the subject of Biden, she confuses "windbag" with "wisdom".

Nice hit, Michelle, but how does this help your children?

'Holmby Hills?' You gotta be kidding.

Only chuckles are permitted at such low-rent Obama affairs as this measly $1000/person event. Guffaws and belly-laughs are reserved for the big-ticket events.

On the Obama-Biden 'chemistry' - I'm reminded of the classic high school chemistry stinkbomb/hydrogen sulfide experiment = H2SO4 mixed with iron sulphide = get the hell out of the room!

You hit the nail on the head...

I could not believe she said the chemistry was great between the two...

Mrs. Grievance was here

Mrs. Grievance was here back in may at a private home fundraiser that was also 1,000 a plate I think.

It's events like these where we get "bitter clingers of guns and religion" type quotes.

Smart?

These peoples' fall is going to be horrific. THUD!

The transcriber dropped a word.

She is not afraid of smarta$$ people.

Our reply, I don't see your butt doing any tricks.

Probably. Did Palin suggest

Probably. Did Palin suggest that Obama was an idiot for being involved in the community?

I believe she just said he

I believe she just said he had no clearly defined responsibilities.

Free this is a big pet peeve of mine because the media isn't

addressing it.

Palin didn't demean community organizers.  She demeaned OBAMA because he demeaned her experience as a small town Mayor.   I can't believe the media has let him turn it around.  She's not allowed to defend herself against his petty attacks?

Right after she was announced his campaign belittled her Mayoral experience and acted as if that was the only thing she had ever done.  They completely ignored the fact that she was a Governor.

Dee

The MSM turns everything around.

It's Okay though.  Sarah just seems more-and-more Presidential as she transcends their massive pile-on smear attacks.

Dee, Free & BT

Sorry about that that rhyme....but it is what it is.  :)

Greta Van Sustern is in Wasilla tonite doing a great piece (I think it must be live, it's still light out) on Sarah Palin.

The Governor couldn't buy better publicity.  Greta has interviewed several of her friends, parents of her high school friends, the new mayor.

Plus, she played the tape of Sarah Palin that Fox did last spring, right before the baby was born.

Sarah Palin is the real deal.

Check tonite's Greta out....or tape it later.  It's one of her better efforts.  When Greta gets off the dead people thing, she really is a great interviewer, gets people to really open up.

Yeah B... I plan on

Yeah B...

I plan on catching it later...my husband has control of the remote...he is listening to Olbie while his ears are burning with rage...hehehe...I kid you not, he is listening to the Worst Person in the World segment and just muted the volume and asked me what is wrong with that man, with their ratings in the tank, why do they keep this simpleton on there?

I told him, just a minute, I am writing about this right now....

Please folks, be laughing with me here...

Btw...I have liked Greta's show for a long time, dead people or not...just depends on the subject she may have on at the time, but I'm a true crime buff...until it goes over-board, which doesn't take the msm long with that...now does it.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Guess I'm just saying

Guess I'm just saying there's equal snarkiness. Michelle probably meant to imply that McCain didn't pick the strongest intellect that he could have. Not that Palin's dumb, but I think she's inferring that Palin was more of a gimmick.

boa.... Palin didn't

boa....

Palin didn't suggest it...but I'm glad you did with your question...he is.

ACORN will get you every time.

Hey by the way, did you catch Obama on with Olbie tonight....man where did his over-blown arrogance go...it was like a changed person..

I mentioned it earlier in some other posts, if you heard him today he is scared, you can tell it in his voice and demeanor....boy he just proved it too.

Once again..Palin Power!

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Sorry, don't watch Olberman,

Sorry, don't watch Olberman, but I don't remember Palin mentioning ACORN in her speech.

Mrs SOBama is

a ROYAL BITCH !

Just sayin

My take on her is that she

My take on her is that she is what our British friends would call "bloody minded".

Obama might not be afraid of

Obama might not be afraid of smart people, but I'm afraid of Obama.  I don't know why he agreed to be on O'Reilly.  I thought he looked like a stuttering, stammering fool.  Talk about smart people.  Obama's not one of them.
