Beginning? Borderline?
How unbalanced was MSNBC's tag team tonight? When Keith Olbermann felt himself getting verklempt over Michelle Obama's speech, he threw it, for some fair-n-balanced commentary, to . . . Chris Matthews. At the conclusion of Mrs. Obama's appearance, Olbermann almost seemed ready to call the election off and just hand the presidency to Obama by acclamation.
KEITH OLBERMANN: Ye-a-h-h-h. Case closed.
Matthews responded with a very guttural "uh-h-h-h."
OLBERMANN: That could not have done better for them. That could not have done better for them. Right to the point of the little girls taking the mikes away and suddenly turning out to be hams. It's wonderful. It really was terrific. And notice, did you notice throughout that, especially as it built towards its conclusion, the woman in that convention hall--the ones we saw at least--we can't say every one--but there were tears throughout among the women. And it was not a maudlin speech, it was not a salesmanship speech. There was just a -- I know, I'm beginning to sound borderline sycophantic on this. So I'll stop. You start.

As John Podhoretz has observed, the highlight was the adorable interaction of the girls with their father on the video screen. As for Michelle's speech itself, I found it lacking in affect and authenticity. One sensed that the handlers, so concerned about avoiding an "angry" moment, had baked the life of it. But it was enough to move Olbermann into admitting that he's in the tank.

He literally goes bat shit crazy when hearing another opinion or, god forbid, facts that don't allign with his insane world view. Joe handled it really well. He both mocked Keith and then used that 'shovel' line against him later on. Too bad the video cut off early because it missed what happened after Joe stopped talking. There was a loooonnngg uncomfortable tension filled pause and then Matthews says, "Well. Are we done?" and Joe say, "If you want to be done. Would you like me to get another shovel?"
Oh, man, that is CLASSIC.

This is just wrong. It's a complete joke that a "news" organization allows this kind of blatantly partisan cheerleading to happen by someone supposed to be hosting and reporting on a news event. Tim Russert should be rolling over in his grave. I don't want to see that on FNC from the right, and it shouldn't be happening on the left.

Olbermann's commentary is just awful, and one wonders how the management at MSNBC can justify keeping him on. With their poor ratings, and the fact that Olbermann cannot be rescued from his growing status as a laughing stock, they must have given up and gone for the carnival theatrics, hoping to keep the loons tuned in, and maybe developing more fanatics.
This is incredible, just incredible. Keith Olbermann is working himself out of a place in the industry - he will end up like Dan Rather.
