David Shuster, arbiter of journalistic standards? The MSM didn't bother to pursue the Edwards story, yet Shuster, he of "pimped out" fame, had the chutzpah to look down his nose not once but twice on the National Enquirer during an interview this afternoon with Barry Levine, its Executive Editor. Levine, speaking with Shuster on MSNBC this afternoon at 4:20 PM EDT, laid out a number of open issues, including paternity and the source of funding for Rielle Hunter's living arrangements.
BARRY LEVINE: I think this story is far from over in that regard.DAVID SHUSTER: And finally I mean, I mean, as a newsman, and I sort of, take that term, sort of liberally for some of your critics, in terms of how they would describe the National Enquirer, but nonetheless, you did get the story right. In your estimation, where is the next aspect to this story for the National Enquirer?
View video here.
LEVINE: Well, we're continuing to follow the money trail on this. We think there's still questions that need to be asked of John Edwards. And certainly the biggest thing is he saying that the affair ended at a certain date and so he couldn't be the father. He's admitted that he's lied about so much of the affair. Why should we believe him at this point that that information's incorrect? I really think we need to determine the paternity of this child for the sake of the child, for Rielle Hunter and also for the sake of his own family, so we can finally put this story to rest.
Shuster couldn't resist taking a parting slap at Levine and his paper.
SHUSTER: Well, there's certainly a reason why a lot of people have very strong feelings about the National Enquirer and I think that Barry Levine has just underscored that.
Nice. So the lords of the MSM look down on the tabloid-trashy National Enquirer. But in the symbiotic world of the media, MSNBC also needs and wants Levine. And let's remember that the Enquirer first broke the story of the affair last year, while Edwards was very much an active candidate for president, and the MSM was sitting on its high-and-mighty derriere.

August 8, 2008 - 16:32 ET by P.J. GladnickIs this the same David Shuster who "scooped" the Karl Rove indictment story in May 2006? And has he ever admitted that he used that font of journalistic integrity, Jason Leopold, as a source for this story?

Isn't this the same crummy cable network that dried-up husk Andrea Mitchell claimed was supremely important to keeping alive the NBC News brand? They may want to re-think their staffing and give Shuster a job selling t-shirts in the gift shop.

August 9, 2008 - 10:14 ET by dscottThat's just really cold. ROFL
The standards of the MSM have dropped below that of the NE and he has the nerve to look down his nose? Now had the MSM refused to cover the sleazy stories regarding Mark Foley, Craig, and many many others for political gain, he could rightfully take such a position. The manner in which they covered the Hurricane Katrina was absolutely disgraceful and totally partisan. Why did the MSM withhold information from the public regarding Nagin's incompetence in not following the city's disaster plan stranding thousands of poor people, the MSM withheld statements by the LADHS they blocked emergency supplies to the superdome, the MSM withheld info from the public regarding the LA Governor Blanco comments saying she didn't know she had to declare a disaster. The MSM broadcast the blatant lie of a Parish President accusing President Bush of drowning his mother by FEMA's lack of response. The MSM was protecting their favorite political party, plain and simple. The MSM is not about unbiased positions.
The truly sad state of journalism is that the standards of the MSM have dropped so low that the NE in effect is now a higher standard and therefore more credible. People are tired of this foolishness and the MSM should realize that they can no longer foist the lie that they are unbiased. If they want to get back to that place where the public can actually trust what they say or not feel they are being snookered due to an agenda by omission of the facts.
Here's a challenge to MSNBC, if you want to pull ahead of FNC in the ratings do the following:
1. Apologize to the public for your crappy biased reporting and displaying poor judgement by editors allowing agenda based reporting of the news.
2. Pledge to report the facts, all the facts on a story.
3. Do not report a story unless you have more than one side of it, if it exists, represented fairly and reasonably.
4. Appoint an Omnibudsman editor to review all stories before they are published, including any stories you purchase from the AP, Reuters, UPI, etc. the Omnibudsman will have the responsibility to cancel any story that in their opinion does not meet the standard of journalism cited in #2 & 3 or any other standards. And demand said information be added before the story is released.
5. You will attribute properly immediately after the name of any politician what their party affiliation is, without exception.
6. You will promptly make corrections of factual errors when they are pointed out and then rerun the story with the correction in it's entirety in order to counteract the false or misleading conclusions due to said factual errors whether intentional or not.
7. You will give equal coverage of all candidates running for office during an election. No more excuses of popularity as determined by your arbitrary standards. You may chose not to cover any and that's fine but you will not show favoritism to any candidate using air time or political party. Your job is not to chose our candidates overtly or via deselection.
8. As more standards are articulated you will adopt them and pledge to the public your job is to report the news, not make the news, not spin the news, period.

MSM
August 8, 2008 - 21:42 ET by iveseenitallThe MSM has proved, time and again, that it has lost all its integrity and credibility. Adolescent, shoddy reporting, not worthy of a sophomore English class, combined with dishonesty and corruption have left it with almost no public trust. It has made itself an object of derision, rather than an object of respect. Most "journalists" in America are unworthy of the name. They are chosen by major media outlets, not for their intellects, hard work, or professionalism, but for a myriad of other dubious reasons. The MSM now exists, in most cases, solely for the entertainment of the masses. "Journalism", as is the case with education, is an abject failure in our country. What a shame and how frightening for our future.

They are just as complicit as Johnny&Liz in keeping the cover-up for them all this time, they very well knew about this from the beginning, they think we are all stupid out here and just don't understand why they chose to do this, let alone not bother to investigate and get the top story out there...but if this had been a repub candidate they would of talked to anyone and everyone that they could that even knew the candidate or any of his family, friends, pets, ect.
The biggest tabloid trash we have anymore starts with the likes of msnbc.

Investigating the MSNBC

How about investigating MSNBC for refusing to cover this story until Mr. Edwards actually admitted his extra-marital affair?
