How insulated is the MSM? In how much of a liberal cocoon does it exist? For an answer, consider the vile cartoon displayed here. My guess is that the great majority of NewsBusters readers are familiar with it. But John Harwood—of the New York Times and CNBC—has never seen it.
That became clear on today's Morning Joe. The topic was the TV comedy world's double-standard, in which Republicans are regularly skewered but the laff factory suddenly shuts down when it comes to mocking Barack. A New York Times article on the matter was the jumping off point, and Joe Scarborough had a field day ridiculing lefty comedians' hypocrisy in piously claiming to "speak truth to power." The truth, said Scarborough, is that the comedians lay off Obama not because there's nothing funny about him, but because they're "in the tank" for the Dem candidate.
Towards the end of the segment came this stunning exchange:
View video here.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: Have you seen the political cartoons of Condoleeza Rice as a parrot with huge black lips? Have you seen the racist --
JOHN HARWOOD: There are cartoons of Barack Obama, too!
SCARBOROUGH: Oh really? With lips out to here? Exaggerated lips?
HARWOOD: No, with ears out to here. [Scarborough and Harwood can be seen illustrating their respective points in the screencap.]
SCARBOROUGH: Yeah, exactly. Ears are not seen, racists do not focus on ears when making fun of African-Americans.
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: This is a point.
SCARBOROUGH: I will show you, the next time you're on here, racist cartoons --
HARWOOD: From the left?
SCARBOROUGH: -- of Condoleeza Rice. No, from mainstream people. Where nobody even brought it up. Nobody was even concerned. I'll guarantee you Condoleeza Rice noticed.
HARWOOD: Show me that. I'll be surprised to see that.
Here you go, John. Surprise! Oh, and the cartoon was not from some obscure scribbler. It's the work of none less than Pat Oliphant . . . the most widely syndicated political cartoonist in the world, described by your own New York Times as "the most influential cartoonist now working."
Note: if the Oliphant outrage isn't enough to make Joe's point, this article contains other cartoons in the genre, including a Doonesbury and one from Danziger.
Update: In the same genre, Damian G. of Conservathink blog passes along this cartoon, by Don Wright of the Palm Beach Post, depicting Clarence Thomas as Antonin Scalia's dummy.

July 16, 2008 - 08:31 ET by motherbeltI've seen it because a big deal was made about it by conservatives. The MSM certainly wasn't touting it as an example of liberal racism! But of course, it's OK to make racist jokes and call "House ni**a" (comeon, you know that's what they meant when they said "House slave!") a black who doesn't toe the "correct" political line.
And Danziger's explanation that the depiction of Dr. Rice as Prissy from "Gone With the Wind" only has to do with her pretending to know what she didn't, is just hilarious!
As if he would have portrayed a white Dr. Rice the same way!
You gotta love liberals. They demonstrate blatant racism, and then pretend that it wasn't about race at all!
And Mark, I agree with you. I posted the other day in another thread that liberals think it's OK to make fun of conservatives, or conservative blacks, because they call it "speaking truth to power."

They are supposed to be funny or satiricle but just show the stupidity of the artist or the editorial premise they are working from.
By the way the furor over the New Yorker cover cartoon of the Obamas is hilarious. It strikes closer to the truth than I'm sure the editors intended. It's surely more truthful than satirical otherwise why would the Obamas and their minions be raising such a stink?
The Democrat party is racist. Not the Republican Party
July 16, 2008 - 08:30 ET by kevinm13Dims and their media, cartoonist supporters have always gone way overboard with racist cartoons depicting Republicans in light that they think of themselves. The problem is that Republicans generally don't think that way. We don't try to put people into "classes" or racial groups. We are all Americans. The cartoon with Secretary Rice as a parrot was racist, demeening and could only come from a liberal.
Comedians are definitely in the tank for Obama and are afraid of beign called racist by joking about him. His socialist positions, his BIG problems when he goes off teh teleprompter ("57 states", etc.) and his attempt to paint himself as a centrist should provide plenty of fodder for the jokesters between now and election day. They are just too afraid of appearing to criticize him and be called racist.

You questioned how insulated the MSM is? Many of them must not watch TV. If they did they would quit spouting this BS about how longs it take to get oil flowing. I have been watching Black Gold. It took those guys 2 weeks to sink a well. They moved the rig in one day and was ready to drill another. Granted I know it would take longer in the ocean or under ice but not 10 years.
If you tell the drillers there is a big pot of gold for the job being done early, they are going to bust their guts to get to it.

I don't really believe that Harwood had not seen these rascist cartoons from the recent past. I think he's so in the tank that he has to deny any opinion coming from the right. And Mika had a deer-in-the-headlights look on her face during the conversation. But earlier, Joe was slamming her like there was no tomorrow over the article about how comedians refuse to make jokes about Obama because he's black. It's what started the whole exchange with Harwood, I believe. It made me feel very good about him calling her out as a shill. Even responded to her far left mumblings that it was BS. Loved it. It just doesn't happen often enough.

July 16, 2008 - 09:20 ET by Remixer96The truth, said Scarborough, is that the comedians lay off Obama not because there's nothing funny about him, but because they're "in the tank" for the Dem candidate.
Regardless of the insulated nature of the MSM, I'm not so sure Joe's right on this one. I think Obama is a special case, for reasons I'm not even sure about, because comedians have tried to poke fun at Obama. Remember Jon Stewart making a joke on Obama a few weeks ago and having to tell his audience it was ok to laugh? I think people have some sort of strange mish-mash of feelings towards Obama right now that doesn't lend itself to humor.
I don't even think all those feelings are good. I'm just saying I think it's far more likely that people don't think jokes about Obama are funny right now rather than there being a left-wing comic conspiracy.
Obama's preemptive strike
July 16, 2008 - 09:34 ET by AgnosticThen Senator Obama's preemptive strike against the American public has worked. By telling everyone that people were going to try to scare them because (pick a reason) or by declaring everything off-the-table due to personal and painful reasons he has taken away the ability of Americans to laugh at him. Even if I didn't believe that his true policies resemble Marxist ideas I would be hesitant to vote for him on this issue alone.
I am skeptical of people who are abnormally afraid of beign criticised. Just like I am skeptical of so many RINOs that are afraid of criticism because they know they are only pretending (assuming conservatism is still an applied characteristic of the Republican party)

July 16, 2008 - 09:44 ET by IgnatzJFahrquarI enliken it to "walking on eggshells" when it comes to how people view B Hussein. The ironic thing is that it has been brought on by B and the Dims, themselves.
You are not allowed to comment on his upbringing, his race, his wife, his kids, his flip-flopping, his religion(s), his ears, his bowling skills, etc. Of course, what we would like to comment on are his views on the issues which are basically non-existent or so muddled we can't figure them out. So then you are left with what? Nothing but an "untouchable" shell.
In my opinion, he has been setup as so "untouchable" that he's alienating himself not only from the undecided but also the "just barely a Dim" voters.

July 16, 2008 - 12:29 ET by Hunter12Dude, You have to analyze the conversation:
Harwood doesn't see the cartoons as racist. I don't think he's lying. That's how sad liberal perceptions are. Someone with a PhD, an accomplished pianist, and speaks 5 languages, can be riduculed because she has a conservative mindset. Put Michelle Obama in a cartoon, give her an Afro, and liken her to Anegela Davis. That's racist! Just because Ms Obama wrote her dissertation on how Blacks are put down in the "White" College System, hasn't been proud of American accomplishments unless she benefits directly, or rode affirmative action and her husband's coat tails to a $300K/year job, don't make her appear to be a racist, because that's racist!

July 16, 2008 - 11:25 ET by suzycreamcheeseI saw the Rice caricature when the right focused on it for a while. It wasn't picked up by the MSM, though, and so it died soon after. Maybe I saw it because I'm somewhat of a news junkie, but I don't think I'm more of a news junkie than someone from the New York Times who eats, sleeps, and breathes news! I find it hard to believe Harwood has never seen it.
I saw them as well
July 16, 2008 - 11:55 ET by americaneagleThe thing is that liberals only see what they want to see, and in this case the "satire" was acceptable. After all, there is NOTHING at all racist or even insensitive about caricaturing Ms. Rice as a "mammy" because she has the wrong identifier after her name (R, rather than D). When you are not part of the Democratic cabal nothing that is said about you, written about you, or any caricature of you is out of bounds.
Bush as monkey
July 16, 2008 - 11:55 ET by MobydubidoI've wondered for quite awhile about how seven and a half years of "Bush as monkey" (or bat sometimes) might translate to an Ospama administration. The New Yorker cover of earlier this week, I think, is a good indication.
The President has been cast in the vilest terms by editorial cartoonists in a "business as usual" manner throughout his terms in office. These caricatures have been so over the top and foul as to allow one no need to worry about the health of professionalism in that "trade". The bias is amazingly in the open and direct. That is, I suspect, another example of what makes being "progressive" so special.
Mixer96
July 16, 2008 - 12:02 ET by rocknrobynI don't think it is so much that people are in awe of or uncomfortable laughing at Obama, it is more that they are afraid of being called out as a racist by strict PCers. You cannot laugh, speak, or discuss anything about Obama, Michelle, et al, without someone jumping down your throat or on your back about what "you meant". (As if they knew). That, I truly believe, is why the audience had to be told it was OK to laugh....there might be the PC police sitting right next to you that would love to try to embarrass you in front of the whole place.

A New Book on Clarence ‘The Lawn Jockey’ Thomas
African America - Black Misleadership Class
Wednesday, 09 May 2007
by George E. Curry
The man who depicted Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as a lawn jockey on the cover of Emerge magazine, back in 1993, presents a positive review of a new book on "the supreme prick from Pinpoint, Georgia." The book, Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas, points out that the High Court's most right-wing member constantly whines about being "victimized" - mainly by other Blacks - all the while denouncing African Americans for wallowing in "victimhood." Thomas has amply earned the status of Most Despised Black Man in Black America.
A New Book on Clarence ‘The Lawn Jockey' Thomas
by George E. Curry
"Only one Supreme Court justice during the century was worse than Justice Clarence Thomas: James McReynolds, a white supremacist who referred to blacks as 'niggers.'"
This article originally appeared in the author's newsletter, The Curry Report.
Anyone who has followed my career knows how I feel about Clarence Thomas. In fact, Jack E. White, writing in Time magazine, said, "No matter what George Curry accomplishes during the remainder of his journalistic career, he will be remembered for one thing: he was the editor who slapped a portrait of Clarence Thomas wearing an Aunt Jemima-style handkerchief on a 1993 cover of Emerge magazine."
White continued, "That shocking image outraged Thomas supporters, of course, but it crystallized the disgust that many African-Americans had begun to feel about the ultra-conservative legal philosophy of the U.S. Supreme Court's only black member."
Given my view of Thomas, I never thought I'd want to read a book on the supreme prick from Pinpoint, Georgia. However, I resisted the urge and this week read Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas. The only reason I read the book was because it was written by Kevin Merida and Michael A. Fletcher, two friends who work at the Washington Post. They have done a superb job describing the many contradictions of Clarence Thomas.
"I never thought I'd want to read a book on the supreme prick from Pinpoint, Georgia."
After reading the book, I have one regret about that famous Emerge cover. If I had an opportunity to do it over, I would tie the Aunt Jemima knot tighter. While criticizing African-Americans for embracing "victimhood," the book portrays Thomas as the ultimate professional victim, at every turn claiming that people didn't like him because of his dark skin, his broad lips, or his conservative ideology.
Recounting a 1998 speech before the National Bar Association, the authors note, "In remarks that veered from self-pity to combative, he maintained that the 'principal problem' he faces could be summed up in one succinct sentence: 'I have no right to think the way I do because I am black.'"
As the late Appeals Court Justice A. Leon Higginbotham pointed out at the time, "He's got a right to think whatever he wants to, but he does not have a right to be free of critique."
And a critique of Thomas shows that while professing to oppose special treatment because of his race, every job he has held, including his appointment to the Supreme Court, was obtained, in part, because of his race.
"Every Thomas employer, from Danforth, who gave him his first job, to President George H.W. Bush, who nominated him to the Supreme Court, chose Thomas at least partly because he is black. Race is a central fact of his meteoric rise, and Thomas has alternately denied it and resented it - all the way to the top," the book states.
To get to the top, to the Supreme Court, Thomas allowed his Right-wing handlers to misrepresent his past.
"'The Pin Point strategy,' some advisers dubbed it: file down the sharp ideological edges and keep emphasizing Thomas' personal story of triumph over adversity," the authors wrote. "... What the White House advisers didn't know - or, perhaps, just ignored - was that Thomas' connection to his birthplace was tenuous at best. His family's house had burned down when he was six, and for most of his young life he was raised comfortably in Savannah by his grandfather, Myers Anderson, one of the black community's leading businessmen."
"The books details Thomas' long and deep attraction to pornography."
Although Thomas' affection for pornography was disclosed during his confirmation hearings, the books details Thomas' long and deep attraction to pornography. He told Dan Johnson, a Yale classmate, "My favorite movie of all time is Deep Throat. I've seen that [MF] six times."
In the public arena, Thomas appears only before friendly audiences; he rarely speaks to Black organizations. He saw nothing wrong with officiating the wedding of conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh while sitting on the Supreme Court. The most incredulous assertion made by Thomas was that his actions benefit African-Americans. He told a visitor to the Supreme Court, "It's unfair how black America criticizes me. I'm trying to help black America."
Help us to do what? Return to slavery?
African-Americans are not fooled. According to a study by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, cited in the book, a 1998 poll showed that Thomas had a favorable rating of just 32 percent, the worst numbers of any prominent African-American.
Judge Higginbotham said, "I have often pondered how is it that Justice Thomas, an African-American, could be so insensitive to the plight of the powerless. Why is he no different, or probably worse, than many of the most conservative Supreme Court justices of the century? I can only think of one Supreme Court justice during the century who was worse than Justice Clarence Thomas: James McReynolds, a white supremacist who referred to blacks as 'niggers.'"

Henry Waxman looks like the Rat on "Beakman's World", and I've said so.
Henry Hyde loked like an owl.
John McCain looks like Casper the Ghost. Can you name one African American who could pass for Casper?

July 16, 2008 - 18:28 ET by bigtimerHarwood is full of B.S.on top of that he has to have seen those cartoons...but it was ok with him and his ilk as long as it was a black conservative they were making fun of or attempting to run down...just A-OK indeed....
The msm along with Obama better knock off the bias and hypocrisy when the tables are turned, by one of their own leftist rags to-boot... he is nothing but a sissified candy a$$, I would be embarrassed to have him representing my party...
It would be nice if McCain would fall out of love with Obama anyday now...I am tired of hearing McCain saying he is sorry all the time to Obama, kissing his butt...and throwing some on our side over the rail along his trail to the WH.
