Bernard: So What if Michelle Obama Were a Black Panther?

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Not that she is, but if Michelle Obama were in fact a Black Panther, what's the big deal?  So seems to think Michelle Bernard.

Anyone who imagines that Bernard brings conservative balance to the MSNBC panels on which she regularly appears should think again.  Yes, Bernard is head of the Independent Women's Forum, an organization with strong conservative roots.  And true, Bernard served on the 2000 Bush-Cheney Presidential Inaugural Committee.  But as the Daily Howler has documented [see 1/3 down page], her pronouncements on Hardball have often been supportive of Barack Obama.

More evidence of that was on display tonight when Bernard condemned the New Yorker cover in harsh terms and then, incredibly, seemed to say that there would be nothing wrong if the cover's caricature of Michelle Obama as a Black Panther were grounded in reality!

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

MICHELLE BERNARD: Chris, I think the cover of the magazine is absolutely revolting. The only thing that could have been much worse for them to do would have been to depict Barack Obama as Sambo and his wife as Aunt Jemima.  I don't understand it, particularly given what happened in New York on 9-11, the fact that so many questions have been raised about their patriotism, whether or not he's a Muslim.  It all fits into this caricature and stereotype that we have seen that I really think borders on racism, it borders on being prejudicial religiously, I don't see the satire in it, I don't think that the rest of the country that looks at it will see any sort of satire, and I don't think there's anything funny about it at all.

When John Heilemann, of the New Yorker's rival magazine, New York, praised the cover, Bernard took strong issue, suggesting Heilemann's race was an impediment to his understanding of the matter.

JOHN HEILEMANN: I think it's brilliant, and it's right down the middle of the plate for the New Yorker's audience. I think everybody who looks at that magazine and reads it understands that it is in fact satire.  I think the only way in which these kind of cartoons work is when they play to an existing perception that's out there in the world. That is in fact as the New Yorker has been arguing all day long, that's what they're making fun of.  I can't possibly see the racism in this whatsoever, and I think Michelle's just completely wrong that there's any kind of racist overtones in this.  I think it's the kind of political commentary and satire that the magazine has long done really well. Of course it's provocative and it's going to sell magazines, and I think it works on all those levels.

BERNARD: But it only works when people get it, and you seem to be one of the only people I've heard all day long that actually gets it and sees the satire in it.  And maybe, if you were in a different skin, you could see the problem with being depicted as Aunt, you know--as this woman with this huge afro and AK-47 doing the fist pump and wearing this Muslim garb. There is a problem when you depict people in that type of a fashion. And also sort of saying, in a, I guess, as they say in a satorical [sic] way that there's something wrong with being a Muslim if he were to be a Muslim. Or his wife were a Black Panther.

Deconstructing, Bernard seems to be saying that just as "there is a problem," in saying "there's something wrong" if Barack Obama were in fact a Muslim, so it would be a problem to suggest there's something wrong if "his wife were a Black Panther."  Can Bernard possibly believe that?  Surely Bernard is aware of the organization's history of violence and other criminal activity, as described here, for example

In any case, Bernard's presence on MSNBC panels hardly provides conservative balance.  It is part of an MSNBC pattern of peopling its panels with unorthodox Republicans/conservatives such as frequent Bush antagonist Pat Buchanan, and Michael Smerconish, who not long ago proclaimed that he. . . might vote for Obama!

Note: And to think, just last week I was writing that Bernard "rarely seems to say anything controversial"!

MSNBC shills for Obama, liberals have no shame

Liberals often are opposed to anything that judges or restrains people's behavior. Of course they don't see the irony, that good judgment and self restraint offers us the most freedom. I have seen the most bizarre and negative behavior condoned by liberals. Celebrating the gangster culture and hip-hop music is a good example. Celebrating and embracing a former black panther is not a far cry from celebrating and embracing today's gangster culture and hip-hop music, which is considered hip and cool on most of today's college campuses. Today's popular culture embraces most things that are negative, wrong, and counterculture. At the same time many of the more extreme liberals mock God, the traditional family and even our country.

MSNBC should be seen as entertainment, not serious news or even serious commentary. Lately, most of what they broadcast is done with the ulterior motive of helping the Obama campaign. If Obama didn't opt out of public financing, this could have been seen as a huge problem.

How have we come to the point where a cable TV station can campaign for a candidate, without disclosing the truth about what they are doing. I thought that this behavior was not supposed to happen in a democratic republic. I thought that this behavior only existed in communist or totalitarian regimes like Cuba, the former Soviet Union and Venezuela.

Was she outraged about Condi Rice being portrayed as Aunt Jemima?

I just have to hope that

I just have to hope that she misspoke. I can't believe she would actually think it shouldn't be considered a big deal if the First Lady was a former Black Panther.

But you know, I do have to agree with this Muslim nonsense. I mean, I must have missed the memo that said all Muslims were eeeeeevil. Are there dangerous and fanatic Muslims? Hell yeah. But I certainly don't believe they make up the majority.

If I were a good and peaceful Muslim citizen in this country, I would be a little offended by everybody saying at every turn "Oh God no! He's not a Muslim! Not now. Not ever! Trust me when I tell you he's not a Muslim. Please remember that!!"

I hope she misspoke too.

but if she didn't she needs to pick one side of the fence (conservative or liberal) and stay there.

Beavis and Butthead.....

hehheh..heheh...she said BLACK ...hehehh

I thought Michelle was off limits, but the MSM and NY'er can't keep their mouths shut.

Pretty soon Obama will just be a Senator in his first Term, instead of a messiah.  WWJD ?

For the majority of blacks

there is NOTHING that a liberal black person can do that is beyond the pale.  Look how many of them fell all over themselves defending Rev. Wright.  And OJ Simpson when they knew damn well that he was guilty.  The reason?  They wanted to get back at whitey.  I can still remember the celebrations when the verdict was announced.

Criticizing a conservative black is another question.  Ask Clarence Thomas.

Michelle has been grating on me for a very long time now....she is about as conservative as Smerc is..and the leftist msm know it, and use them gladly as if they represent our side of the aisle...

Why is it that Successful Blacks are attacked ?

Clarence Thomas succeeds and he's attacked...?  Jesse Jackson and company demand "Victims", or their Baloney turns into Salami.

If Obama is elected President, NO ONE will be more Proud than his White Mamma.

Jesse Jackson has already expressed a Black Opinion....and If JJ wants to cut off his lower abdominal tubes, then anything else the White folks wanna do has to be somewhat more friendly.  Heck, all I'm gonna do to B-HO is withold a vote....a painless operation compared to what JJ wants to do.

leftie MSNBC

MSNBC is so far left, it left the planet, no the solar system, no the Milky Way, no the Universe, a long time ago. If the Devil himself came up and said, "Hey, I am here to slaughter a few million people," some of MSNBC staff would say, "What's the big deal?"

I wholeheartedly agree that

I wholeheartedly agree that it’s becoming more difficult to identify valid representatives for the right side of the aisle. A perfect example of this unorthodox Republicans/conservatives misrepresentation is the selection of our presumptive nominee John McCain. Let’s very briefly look at his Republican credentials:

Economy- “every deserving American family or homeowner will be afforded the opportunity to trade a burdensome mortgage for a manageable loan that reflects their home's market value.”  I bought a home I could afford, understood the mortgage contract I signed, and make my payments on time. Yet John McCain wants to give some of my tax dollars(and yours) to those who foolishly made the decision to obtain a ‘burdensome’ mortgage. This is a Republican?

Energy – John McCain wants to expand domestic oil and gas but refuses to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). This is a Republican?

Global Warming, or as they are now calling it Climate Change, since they can blame CO2 emissions whether the climate gets hotter or colder: John McCain proposes a Market-Based Cap And Trade System. and Greenhouse Gas Emission Targets And Timetables. This is a Republican?

Immigration: John McCain spoke to La Raza the Race’s open-borders organization. Michelle Malkin’s analysis is dead on. This is a Republican?

I believe I’ve made my point.  MSNBC has deliberately stacked the deck with Psedo-Republicans, but so have those who voted for John McCain in the primaries.

Thank you for the kink of Malkins, I wondered what she thought of McCains RINO BS at The Race today...I heard a lot of it, not all, enough to get semi-steam coming to the top of my head again when it comes to his flip-flopping...I cannot hold my nose for this man...my friend...

You are welcome (for the Malkin link). As for being your friend - As we continue to blog together here at NewsBusters at all hours of the day and night,  I'm certain that in the future I will be able to mimic Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie when at the end of the story he says:

"The hard parts over, you know?

We were already...

Conservatives for Obama

What many people posting here don't realize is that many conservatives are going to vote for Obama. Just read the recent columns from Robert Novak and Thomas Sowell. Both of them have met plenty.

goldwaterfan

Barack Obama has moved to the right of where he was on many important issues. I understand why he is doing it, and I respect his political acumen. As soon as he indicates, which I expect him to do in the near future, that he is willing to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) I will vote for him.

-------------------------------------------------

I'm voting for Barack Obama now that an AP poll shows people would rather barbecue burgers with Barack Obama than with John McCain.

Oh he will... So will

Oh he will...

So will McCain...

Both with soooo much boring flip-flopping rhetoric...on and on...

It is going to be interesting...we've got an on-going bet in my home who is going to do it first if prices don't recede before the election....

If he does get

If he does get elected president and you happen to be invited to the inauguration, try to get a seat on the right hand side of the stage, because I can guarantee you he'll be making a hard turn back to the left after he finishes the oath.  Does anyone actually buy into the centrist BS he's spouting right now?  A voting record in the Illinois statehouse and two years in the US Senate show an ultra-liberal, willing to give hard-earned tax dollars to anyone with a promised vote and a hand out.

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

Hard left with a push!

And when he doesn't go far left enough or even hesitates he will have Speaker Pelosi there to give him a shove. Do not forget that once in office he will hear nothing but the far left liberal chorus that will be in control of the Congress.

While at one time I would have never advocated voting for the lesser of two evils I have been spending more time visiting getdrunkandvote4mccain.com more often lately.

A commentator (Bernard) who

A commentator (Bernard) who suggests that an adversary in a debate cannot see “racism” because of his or her skin color….. well, as far as I’m concerned that commentator has lost the debate by default.

This has probably been said on one of the other threads, but I believe Barry Blitt knew exactly what he was doing with that cover. Barack and Michelle are perfect subjects for caricature, and, liberal or not, Blitt allowed himself some fun. The result is a classic cover that will sell a lot of magazines, and Blitt has 15 minutes of fame and glory at the very least. The claim that he (Blitt) and the magazine were satirizing right wing scare tactics reads like a weak justification.

Hi BT, The New Yorker might have a flood of cancelled subscriptions, but it’s been a long, long time since I entertained the idea of buying a copy.

maggie... that is

maggie...

that is funny...that is exactly what my husband said tonight....and we both detest the New Yorker...he used to read it before I met him some thirty years ago...he said he never paid for it, I ad some from the late twenties, long story....nevertheless...

I want it to just frame the cover and put with my political pictures/posters I have...after-all...a picture/caricature speaks volumes...

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Hi BT - If it makes it to print

we should all buy copies and leave them on our coffee tables. Buy two copies and have one copy in the car to take with when ever you have to wait somewhere.

Obama's halo pictures are splattered everywhere. You can't get away from them. I bet if this does make it to the stands, then the New Yorker will make sure to do a Halo cover closer to the election.
