Helen Thomas Seizes on Photo of Dying Baby to Accuse US

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Q. Is there any level to which Helen Thomas won't stoop?

A. Apparently not.

That's my conclusion, based on Thomas's exchange during today's press gaggle with White House Press Secretary Dana Perino. Here is the front page of today's Washington Post to which Thomas refers [warning: graphic image]. A slide-show from WaPo's web edition contains another photo of what appears to be the same child, with this legend:

Two-year-old Ali Hussein is pulled from the rubble of his family's home in the Shiite stronghold of Sadr City in Baghdad, Iraq on Tuesday, April 29, 2008. The child, who later died in hospital, was in one of four homes allegedly destroyed by U.S. missiles. More than two dozen people were killed when Shiite militants ambushed a U.S. patrol in Baghdad's embattled Sadr City district, bringing the death toll in area on Tuesday to more than 30, a U.S. military spokesman and Iraqi officials said. (AP Photo/Karim Kadim)

Here's the exchange between Thomas and Perino.

HELEN THOMAS: Do you think it's worth a million Iraqi deaths, to continue to bomb the Iraqis who did nothing to us?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

DANA PERINO: Helen, our soldiers work extremely hard to make sure that any time they're carrying out an operation, they do not --

THOMAS: I'm not saying that. Are they bombing people -- did you see the front page of the Post today, a baby?

PERINO: -- that they do not -- they do everything they possibly can to make sure that no innocent civilians are killed.

THOMAS: Oh, come on. How can you say that?

PERINO: Helen, if you want to denigrate our military, many of whom are in this room today, you can do that.

THOMAS: I'm not denigrating our military.

MS. PERINO: Yes, you are.

THOMAS: I'm saying we're bombing Iraqis for no --

PERINO: And who is bombing them? You're absolutely talking about -- our military goes to great lengths to make sure that people are protected, and this President stands behind them 100 percent.

THOMAS: Are they dying or not?

PERINO: It is extremely tragic that a young child died. I understand that that is a young mother's child, and that woman is probably grieving, unlike anything I will ever feel.

Helen Thomas- should be in the Guiness Book of World Records for the person whacked longest, hardest, and most often, with the ugly stick. And that's just talking about her MIND.

She can't help but stoop

Q. Is there any level to which Helen Thomas won't stoop?

No Mark, as short as this woman is, the real question is "Is there any level to which Helen Thomas could rise"

I guess in Helen's world, when our troops are fired on, they can only fire back if and only if, they are sure there is zero chance of any innocents getting hurt.  Think our enemies know this fact?  Think they use this fact?  Think they remember us leaving huge, clearly visible weapons stockpiles completely untouched in Vietnam because a school or hospital was nearby?

We've killed a million

We've killed a million Iraqis now? I thought it was 600,000?

600,000

Roger, 600,000 is, like, sooo last year. It absolutely HAS to be near a million by now. Has to.

If I had Dana Perino's job, I wouldn't have it for long, as I doubt that I could suffer the idiocy of Helen Thomas.

I would be so tempted to scream at her..."We don't kill civilians on purpose.  They are willing to blow up their own children to kill us.

Can you see the difference?"

Why is that hag permitted

in the press corp? Aren't there reporters waiting who actually want to ask questions rather than bait an argument?

Helen Thomas has been given

Helen Thomas has been given double privilege: She is allowed to attend press briefings even though she is not a reporter covering the White House any more; and she is allowed to keep her seat in the front row.

She now has gone far past abusing those privileges. They should be revoked.

Revoke her press

Revoke her press privileges? Heck, I want her tried for treason. "Do you think it's worth a million Iraqi deaths, to continue to bomb the Iraqis who did nothing to us?" To make a patently false statement which serves no purpose but to encourage our enemies is treason in my book. It's bad enough that they ignore the good events and report the bad ones to death, but lying about is way too far.

One of my favorite comics does an excellent job of mocking the media idiots today.

Typhoid Mary

Why hasn't this Typhoid Mary been banned from the White House press briefings?

And I bet she's got a breath you "could trot a mouse on."

I'm guessing she's waiting

I'm guessing she's waiting for a spot to open up on "The View."

Perfect

Why didn't I think of that? "The View", a perfect place for her to honk!

Helen Thomas is a disgusting

Helen Thomas is a disgusting human being.  I applaud Dana for calling Helen out for denigrating our brave military, I only wish Dana had made the point that it is the terrorists that hide behind women and children and draw them into the line of fire and thus Helen should go ask them if it is worth killing innocent people for their evil desires.

I can just hear that

I can just hear that screech of a voice when she is making her usual accusations during these things...the woman cannot retire soon enough, in fact it should of been years and years ago...she should of left when her secret love Clinton left...

Good job Dana...fighting with that enemy within all the time must get old...you deserve an award.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Questions for Hell- en:

Do you think the terrorists and insurgents should stop using women and children as human shields?

Do you think the Iraqis should govern themselves or return to dictatorship?

Do you think the terrorists would show the same level of restraint the coalition has shown if they had similar military power?

And one more: ever think about retirement?

Hell-ish

Yeah, maybe just maybe 'insurgents' should fight us on the battlefield, instead of out of their homes. Of course, that question would never cross the Hag's mind.

Not to diminish the death oa

Not to diminish the death oa a child, regardless od the curcumstances, but the name Ali Hussein appears quite often in stories of Iraq (go Google it). I hope this is not another "Green Helmet Guy" situation...

THOMAS: I'm saying we're

THOMAS: I'm saying we're bombing Iraqis for no --

Dana: Then your an idiot.

THOMAS: Are they dying or not?

Dana: I thought that was the idea. We bomb and Terrorists die. We can not see, from the air, what or who, they are hiding behind. If they would be a man about it, then we would not have these problems. But we all know they are cowards, and hide behind women and children.

The irony of it all... her

The irony of it all... her sitting there mooning about the death of one innocent child, while ignoring (or even applauding) the deaths of hundreds, thousands, millions of innocent unborn children in abortion mills across this country. What's the difference between the two children- other than location and food/oxygen supply? Frackin hypocrite.

Helen Thomas is from

Helen Thomas is from Lebanese ancestry, and so am I. I am ashamed to say that. She must think that a woman of Arab descent must "defend" all Arabs, and that's just not true. This is war, and in war, some people get hurt and killed. She's a troublemaker and I wish she would just go away. What an embarrassment to my culture.

Is that Helen, or is it just

Is that Helen, or is it just her cadaver? Inquiring minds want to know....

The troll speaks

Why is this senile, disgusting old windbag still allowed in the White House press room?  She never has anything rational to say, just sound bites to inflame and provoke.  Does she keep her seat out of respect, considering she's been in the White House press corps since the Lincoln administration?

"If a man does his best, what else is there"?

General George S. Patton Jr.

Ambushing the White House

"Are they dying or not?"

That's what happens when militants ambush our patrols and then hide in civilian structures and use little children as shields when we retaliate. We don‘t do that. We face our enemys in the open, face to face if possible.

Helen is living under a delusion. It's the militants that are killing, maiming, and destroying everything in Iraq, not out military. We're doing everything in our power to stop people from indiscriminately killing men, women, and children. But I guess that concept is a bit too much for her to understand.

"Do you think it's worth a million Iraqi deaths, to continue to bomb the Iraqis who did nothing to us?"

Helen is reliving WWII when allied bombing runs were leveling entire cities. The main reason that this war is taking so long is because we no longer indiscriminately destroy entire cities and countries to gain victory. We do it the hard way now, house by house and room by room if necessary. This is to eliminate civilian casualties as much as humanly possible. It's the terrorists that are using civilian houses and public building in which to launch attacks against out troops and those of the ligitimate Iraqi government.

I'm saying we're bombing Iraqis for no --“ for no what, apparent reason?

Hay Helen, wake up and face reality, will ya? We're the good guys here, not the militants. We’re trying to protect the Iraqi’s so that they may finally live in peace and find a way to make a better life for themselves and their children. That makes us the good guys.

The militants don't want that. They kill everyone who gets in their way simply because they want total control of everyone and their lives. That makes them the bad guys.

Helen is too blinded by her own hatred of the Bush administration to
see this clearly. In her mind, every death in Iraq is caused by our
military and if we leave, all will be grins and giggles in the Middle
East. She’s crazy, though. The historical evidence points to a complete breakdown
of civilian authority and control when we leave a country too soon.
Millions of lives are dependent upon us and our continuing support of
Iraq and it’s people. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

HELEN THOMAS: Do you think

HELEN THOMAS: Do you think it's worth a million Iraqi deaths, to continue to bomb the Iraqis who did nothing to us?

Helen shows the lack of "Being Historically Minded" that my instructors used to rail against.

She imputes malice to the US Military actions towards the civilian populous in Iraq "Who did nothing to us."

Does she similarly impute malice from the US military towards the Civilian residents of Caen France who were killed by US bombs in June 1944?

Does she similarly impute malice from the US military towards the Civilian residents of Brest RFrance killed when US bombers attempted to clear the Germans from the port area in the summer of 1944?

Does she similarly impute malice from the US military towards the Civilian residents of San Pietro who were killed by US bombers attempting to clean the Germans out of occuppied Italy?

I doubt it, as these actions occured when liberal saint FDR was in power.

Short answer, there is no malice and US targeteers take every effort to minimize civilian casualties to the point of actually canceling missions if necessary.  But we shan't hear of the from Helen..

The old drunk that lived under the overpass near our house began to rant like Helen when he was near the end. He even looked something like her, only better. When he really got going and started following us home from school we'd throw him something like a Mars bar to shut him up. He'd eat it paper and all and would smack his lips and look pensive (or dazed) for a while. We got to where we would stop and sit in the grass and wait for the fog to lift and see if he would continue where he left off. More often than not, he would....kind of like Helen, as dependable as the old drunk (except he was more fun).

"I'm not denigrating our

"I'm not denigrating our military. " Oh really Helen?????  Let's look at your Daily Kos like question in context and please tell me how in the world you aren't denigrating the military?

DANA PERINO: Helen, our soldiers work extremely hard to make sure that any time they're carrying out an operation, they do not --

THOMAS: I'm not saying that. Are they bombing people -- did you see the front page of the Post today, a baby?

THOMAS: I'm not denigrating our military.

MS. PERINO: Yes, you are.

So there you have it.  The extremely hot and conservative Dana Perino says that our military do everything they can to avoid things like this and you say "Oh come on!  How can you say that?"  You are saying by that question you think the extremely hot and conservative Dana Perino's answer about the military trying to avoid this type of thing isn't true.

HELEN'S HEAD EXPLODES

HELEN THOMAS: Do you think it's worth a million Iraqi deaths, to continue to bomb the Iraqis who did nothing to us?

DANA PERINO: Helen, our soldiers work extremely hard to make sure that any time they're carrying out an operation, they do not --

THOMAS: Why is the Bush administration authorizing the killing and torture of civilians?

PERINO: Helen, they do everything they possibly can to make sure that no innocent civilians are killed.

THOMAS: How can you defend Bush and his policies? He is worse than Hitler and Al Queda combined.

PERINO: Helen.....

THOMAS: When will Bush be tried and impeached for war crimes?

MS. PERINO: Helen, one more nutjob question out of you and.....

THOMAS: An illegal war, the slaughter of innocent civilians worldwide, the destruction of the environment and our constitution, wiretapping of all civilians, racism of blacks, taxing the poor and filling the pockets of the rich. Shouldn't we go right past due-process and line up Bush, Cheney and Condi against the firing wall? Or, another option, have a public hanging outside the Capitol building?

Hey, yeah, I know.... it's unreal.

She sits in that front-row chair of hers, running off questions that are blatantly left wing-driven and solely designed to denigrate any and all things Bush-related. It IS despicable.

Helen's hero, Bill Clinton

Helen, just for the record, more civilians (notabaly children) died in Iraq during the Clinton years from sanctions and war than have died during President Bush's administration.

Sec. Madeleine Albright: "I think this ['that a half million children have died (as a result of sanctions against Iraq). ..more children than died  in Hiroshima'] is a very hard choice, but the price, we think the price is worth it."

Helen's hero, Bill Clinton:

...The "leader of the free world [Pres. Bill Clinton]" waxing oh so eloquently: "'We're not inflicting pain on these fuckers,' Then, with his face reddening, his voice rising, and his fist pounding into his thigh, he leaned into Tony [Lake], as if it was his fault. 'I believe in killing people who try to hurt you.  And I can't believe we're being pushed around by these two-bit pricks.'" --George Stephanopoulos quoting President Clinton in "All Too Human."

-- Jimmy Carter – On Kosovo, NYT, May 27, 1999

"..our destruction of civilian life has now become senseless and excessively brutal... The American-led force has expanded targets to inhabited areas and resorted to the use of anti-personnel cluster bombs. The result has been damage to hospitals, offices and residences of a half-dozen ambassadors, and the killing of innocent civilians... [Our] insistence on the use of cluster bombs, designed to kill or maim humans, is condemned almost universally and brings discredit to our nation."
