CORRECTION: This item originally cited Ace of Spades as having uncovered that Obama's mentor was Frank Marshall Davis, a man with Communist roots. It was in fact Cliff Kincaid at Accuracy in Media. I regret the error.
Religion is the opiate of the masses. -- Karl Marx, 1843
It's not surprising that they get bitter, they cling to . . . religion . . . as a way to explain their frustrations. -- Barack Obama, 2008
Has anyone else pointed out the striking similarity between Barack Obama's recent statement about tough economic times driving people to religion and that of another person who preached change: Karl Marx?
Obama added guns and xenophobia to his list of proletarian elixirs for bitterness. But the fundamental point remains: Barack apparently doesn't take religion, his own or anyone else's, too seriously. It's not a search for truth or an attempt to live in accordance with God's word. It's just a way to get by, a stupefacient that helps proles endure the pain of living in an economy unfairly dominated by the "haves." Karl would concur.
This morning's Today did take up the controversy that Obama's remark has kicked up. View video here.
Of course there was no suggestion at Today that Obama might have been channeling Marx. But is the notion outlandish? Consider what Cliff Kincaid at Accuracy in Media has uncovered about Frank Marshall Davis, the mentor Obama almost surely describes in his book Dreams from My Father:
[T]hrough Frank Marshall Davis, Obama had an admitted relationship with someone who was publicly identified as a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). The record shows that Obama was in Hawaii from 1971-1979, where, at some point in time, he developed a close relationship, almost like a son, with Davis, listening to his "poetry" and getting advice on his career path. But Obama, in his book, Dreams From My Father, refers to him repeatedly as just "Frank."
The reason is apparent: Davis was a known communist who belonged to a party subservient to the Soviet Union. In fact, the 1951 report of the Commission on Subversive Activities to the Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii identified him as a CPUSA member. What's more, anti-communist congressional committees, including the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), accused Davis of involvement in several communist-front organizations.
Trevor Loudon, a New Zealand-based libertarian activist, researcher and blogger, noted evidence that "Frank" was Frank Marshall Davis in a posting in March of 2007.
Will the MSM get around to exploring Obama's radical roots and abiding ideology? A few more candid statements from the candidate along the lines of his "clinging to religion" remark, might just force the media's hand.

Yes

Wonderful, now he is saying small town America passes on a tradition of bitterness. What a guy.
I know none of us here will forget this demeaning statement, but the failing media will let it go by the beginning of next week.

PS Did anyone else hear the speech he gave in (I think) Indiana where he said the right to bear arms was a "tradation"...sure later in the speech he mentioned the Second Amendment, but we can see where he is really coming from in his beliefs.

Imploding Dem party
Sat, 04/12/2008 - 08:02 ET by Mr. TerryObama is so far left that he's making Hillary look like a moderate. Even though people can't stand her royal deceitfulness these kinds of comments might keep her in the race a little longer...Dems are imploding because of all this. Obama just insulted 3/4's of the country with his elitist arrogance.
This is the time for McCain to make a stand for middle America and conservative values. He could have a landslide if he would.

Sat, 04/12/2008 - 08:44 ET by NL207The Dems are imploding? I think not!
While I think the Dem chance to gain the Whitehouse this year are slim to none, at the same time, they will extend their conttrol over both houses of Congress. The Schumer/Emmanuel strategy is working to perfection. The massive smear campaign they have been waging with Media complicity has born bountiful fruits. In our region, the Republicans are having great difficulty recruiting quality candidates for the House and Senate. No one wants to run on the Republican Party line because they all know full well they will be subjected to harassment, invasion of privacy, false charges an even burglary in the quest for dirt.
The thing I find most amazing about all of this is Schumer himself. This is a man who clearly violated the Hatch Act as a Congressman. He was censured by his own party for this corruption but was never prosecuted. Now he is an influential Senator pedaling his filth wherever and whenever. He belongs in jail.

Sat, 04/12/2008 - 09:23 ET by ahusserThere is a lot of animosity against McCain among conservatives, warranted or not. If he is elected (and I think he will be) it will be a hard Presidency. He will be up against a democratic congress. His only defense will be the bully pulpit and the veto. He only will be able to hold the line. There will be no advancing any GOP (read conservative) initiatives. He will be attacked from within his party and overwhelmingly from the dims and the media. He will be marginalized like President Bush was. I blame the present Administration and GOP congress for this. It was their's to lose and they did, through a combination of lack of foresight, insight, ignorance and arrogance.

Tue, 04/15/2008 - 08:40 ET by mbuelNo way in hell. Look at how HRC is using this speech in San Fran against him, and how BHO, is responding to her. There is simply no way. Plus given how repulsive BHO is making himself to moderates, such a ticket would probably hurt the both of them more.
The facts:
In polls dems indicate that if Obama was picked 26% would vote for McCain. If it was vice versa 16% would vote for McCain over Hillary.
HRC has gained 20 points in polls over BHO in Pennsylvania. That's a huge gain in such a short amount of time, and it's only going to increase as BHO steps in it every time he opens his mouth.
If Obama is the nominee,
Sat, 04/12/2008 - 14:30 ET by NL207If Obama is the nominee, and barring a miracle comeback by Clinton, he will be, the national election campaign will focus in on all this radical left philosophy of Obama. Quite frankly, if everyday Americans knew exactly where he stood on every issue instead of this rhetorical pablum he broadcasts, he could not even be re-elected Senator from Illinois, much less President. He may as well be a card-carrying Communist. I personally regard the man as a public enemy.
Gray Davis found out what happens even amongst the bluest voters when the toilets don't flush and the lights don't come on. Obama's policies are the essence of these kinds of problems.

The people that think McCain will take this quite easily are in a for a rude awakening

How many voted against the housing boondogle that gave money to dem groups like ACORN?
How many voted against the welfare check for every American, even if they didn't pay taxes?
Let me put it another way, regardless of which party wins big in November, the Americans will still be hurting... it's simply a matter of degrees, and I frankly would like to keep the oven turned down as low as possible and rally behind a solid Conservative for 2012.

While I like seeing optimists out there, this is a still wishcast. Be sure to vote (and pray) that neither Democrat gets elected. So, I think it will be relative close, but I give McCain the edge--as long as he continues to be a "voice of sanity, reason, and moderation, while Obama and the Clintons destroy each other. anti-republican sentiment
Mon, 04/14/2008 - 08:04 ET by mbuelI think most of the "anti-republican" sentiment came from republican voters... some of it warranted (like the war on our borders, language and culture that the republicans refuse to defend) some of it not, (like the constant war against conservatism by the media that paints any conservative action as a bad one.)
IMO, the voters that were feeling this antipathy towards the party, WERE going to vote for Obama. In fact some of them did vote for Obama in the primaries. (you can see this in early polling), but Obama's continual self destruction, by insulting the very people that he should be trying to attract will ensure that those voters do not vote for him.
And that doesn't even include the pro-union dems that are currently backing HRC.

Contrast Hillary's method of deceit with Obama's method
Sat, 04/12/2008 - 08:08 ET by jrichThe contrast between Hillary Clinton's method of deceit and Barack Obama's method of deceit is very instructive, and frightening. Hillary Clinton (and Bill) are straightforward liars. They lie. And when they get caught (happening more and more) they use some lame excuse like "I misspoke".
Obama on the other hand, and his enablers, use the "out of context" excuse. Insulting. They attempt to make YOU believe that if you were more thoughtful or more careful, you would understand and agree with what Obama said. In other words, you're stupid for misunderstanding what Obama meant.
Hillary Clinton's brand of deceit, straightforward lying, relies on enablers and the media to give her a pass.
Barack Obama's brand of deceit, you didn't understand the entire context, relies on the belief that his listeners are stupid.
Both methods of deceit are unacceptable for a wannabe President; however, Obama's brand of deceit is far more insulting.

Sat, 04/12/2008 - 09:54 ET by QueenMumjrich: A very provocative analysis. You're absolutely right. Obama's rhetoric is designed to confuse in such a way that the average listener is made to think that the only reason they can't understand what he's trying to say is because his rhetoric is so lofty. All you have to do is look at Obama's interview with CNBC's Maria Bartiromo. Link: http://www.cnbc.com/id/23835435Obama Obama continuously uses thinly veiled language like "creating a tax code that is more equitable"or "those of us in the upper brackets have benefited disproportionately from a globalized economy."
It's all there. He is at the very least, a far left Democrat. Unfortunately I feel that based on his mentors and relationships with his church he is more of a socialist that feels that the only solution is wealth redistribution and government controll through taxation of assetts as to create some artificial equality.
Hopefully someone out there will "Swift-Commie" Obama since McCain seems hell bent on some "Play nice" campain.

Gator -- I have to disagree
Sat, 04/12/2008 - 09:37 ET by Jack BauerGator -- I have to disagree with you on McCain's campaign strategy here.
While I don't like many of his "liberal" positions, McCain (or his team) has correctly sussed out how to combat the saintly Barack Obama. Something the Clintons have never done, except briefly about two months ago.
Obama is a passive-aggressive counter-puncher. The Clintons have been made for him. They have been throwing heavier and heavier punches for a year, and he has just side-stepped and punched them in the face.
You'll note that McCain ain't playing that game. He and his team are just waiting for Obama to say or do something, and then they have been counter-punching back.
It's working too. McCain has got a very fast reaction team working for him. I have to kudos him on that, especially when you consider that McCain is naturally a hyper-hyper aggressive.
Obama's not that bright.
Sat, 04/12/2008 - 09:55 ET by pbthinkerI don't believe Obama's that bright. I do believe he has some really good people in his campaign. He has good people that were disenchanted with the Clintons and, during the primary, their focus has been to put the Clintons in their place. He's had the advantage of a fawning press not asking him the tough questions, ones that he has to answer on the spot, especially during the debates. Somehow, you have to believe this will end, during the general election, and the Democrats better do some serious vetting, before then.
IMHO, since they've avoided vetting their candidates, they have the 2 worst candidates left for the general election, but that's just my opinion. For Obama to be elected, the media is going to have to invent experience for him he doesn't have which, for the American media, shouldn't be a problem.

Trying to be a white, black, muslim, religious, socialist, Christian with a socialist fascist wife must take a huge toll on one's psyche. The main problem with all those influences on him and his character what kind of person is he in reality. I don't think he or anyone else knows. Totally unprepared and unpredictable and without character or integrity or courage would be my guess. The perfect democratic presidential candidate.

In the case of the word "nuclear"
Mon, 04/14/2008 - 06:27 ET by sarcasmoThere's no "now and then." Bush would have needed to pronounce the word correctly at least once, and AFAIK he has yet to manage that linguistic feat.

Mon, 04/14/2008 - 06:49 ET by PeskyDaneThe comparison is disingenous since our president does not put himself out there as a great speaker. I have been speaking in public for 20 years as part of my job and as an invited guest and I still dread it to this day. I am the fist person to admit that I need to write it down for myself.
Obama, on the other hand is supposed to have this great reputation for public speaking and yet can't seem to string a two thoughts together much less get it past his teeth without intense rehearsal or an ear piece.
BTW, I don't believe you that you've never seen any footage of the president correctly pronouncing that word. The fact that you even assert such an obvious falshood says way too much about you.
What's more, your whole "a plauge on both your houses" libertarian B.S. that you throw around on this site has worn thin.
Nope. I've told the truth, as usual.
Mon, 04/14/2008 - 06:52 ET by sarcasmoI have yet to see Bush pronounce that word correctly. I'd welcome video that proves he can, but my words remain the truth. They'll stay true no matter how you try to slant them or slam me as a liar. I'm not. You may not like what I say, but I tell you people the truth daily. Mon, 04/14/2008 - 07:07 ET by PeskyDaneLet's try this special test, since you insist on parsing: Using the standard of perponderance, is it more likely that the president has pronounced the word correctly, or less likely?
Frankly?
Mon, 04/14/2008 - 07:16 ET by sarcasmoI'd put the chances of anyone finding & posting video/audio of Bush pronouncing it correctly at about 50/50.
It remains a 100%-wrong "nukular" from every instance I've ever heard out of his mouth, just as I said, with 0% correct. But I'm not a big fan of political speeches from Presidents, so if a correct pronunciation instance can be found, it's not too likely that I heard it.

My point is that Obama is a manufactured fraud with a ersatz black church preacher style of rhetoric that collapses outside specific controlled environments.
He is also very very boring. Not that young (48), and not that good looking (he looks like a big eared peanut).
And what that has to do with a two term President who is leaving office still beats me. Though you seem to find that relevant.

I always though him an empty spacesuit floating in the vacuum of space -- but, so what? It's all about the perception of articute versus the reality of glib.
But I didn't understand that his whole persona was so paper-thin that he can be punctured quite so easily, when confronted by anything uh,,,, resembling uh... an--- uh... unscripted... uh... questions.
To recycle a cliche -- he's not ready for prime time and that will be painfully exposed during one to one debates. IMHO... and no matter what another fellow Harva Mater thinks.

Sat, 04/12/2008 - 10:09 ET by QueenMumExactly, pb. The reason Obama keeps getting tripped up is that he's "reading" from a script. I think he believes in the message. But he's either not taking the time to analyze his speeches in broad political terms, or he's indeed dumber than the media would have us believe. And that's why I believe there is a movement of some sort - under the radar - that has crafted Obama's image, is funding his campaign, and dictating his purported policies. And it ain't the DNC. Does this make me a member in good standing of the "Tin Foil Hat Society"? Or am I on to something?

The "pie" needs to be reconstructed in such a manner that all the pieces are equal. Not that all the people are created equal. But that all the people have an equal piece of the pie, whether they've contributed to the ingredients or not. Any person of average intelligence can see that this means more taxes for those who produce the wealth and no accountability for those who choose to wait for others to take care of them. And that such "changes" clearly fly in the face of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and everything that makes America great.

The irony is that BO, possesing this unhealthy obsession 'to belong' to a particular ethnic group, is his greatest limitation to belonging in the position of CIC of a country that was built on the ability of individuals (most) eager to assimilate into one group simply called Americans. BO's limitation is not based on the supposed racist society bogeyman but because of BO's own racist attitude. For more on that see identity politics -- Victor David Hanson has a great piece here.
As an aside -- I find it breathtakingly hypocritical when libs/leftists and other assorted moonbats lambast Iraqis for their various sects inability to get along. The argument is something along the line of Iraq can never be stable due to the many years of ethnic hatred between different religious factions, yada, yada. Yet these same moonbats that deplore Iraqis supposed inability to unite as one are the very people that propogate, promote and otherwise thrive on the very devisive practice of identity politics here in America. Projection?
I see BO as a conflicted person that is arrogant while pretending to be humble, elitist while trying desperately to portray himself as one with 'the people' and never capable of being comfortable with his roots. (CNN) — Which Democrat is winning the battle for religious voters? God only knows.
Sen. Hillary Clinton has maintained an edge among Roman Catholics.
So far this year, Hillary Clinton has maintained an edge among Roman Catholics, many of them the Hispanic and working-class white voters who have been among the most loyal members of her base.
Thanks in large part to that support, many surveys had also given her a
slight edge over Barack Obama among white Democratic voters who
attended church of any kind regularly.
But in exit polls, the category of regular church-goers — those who
attend services once a month or more — were more likely to choose
Obama. That category in many states was dominated by African-Americans,
who have overwhelmingly backed the Illinois senator’s candidacy.
For years, the evangelical community has largely supported Republican presidential candidates……..
CRAWFISH NOTE: Let’s see… the party of unrestricted
abortion, homosexual marriage, faith-bashing movie stars and
Mass-invading kooks has (significant?) Catholic supporters? I can’t

There is none so blind as they that won’t see. Jonathan Swift 1667-1745
Cliff Kincaid and his
Tue, 06/17/2008 - 12:11 ET by KaleokualohaCliff Kincaid and his colleagues have accused Frank Marshall Davis (1905-1987) of being a Stalinist, a lifetime member of the Communist Party, and “Obama’s Communist Mentor.” Kincaid heads “Accuracy In Media” (A.I.M.), an organization dedicated to “fairness, balance and accuracy in news reporting.” Kincaid and his colleagues are all honorable men.
Having asked Kincaid to substantiate some of his accusations, and having received no reply, one can only conclude that Kincaid must be preoccupied with more important questions, because Kincaid is an honorable man.
Although the ironically named “Accuracy In Media” has yet to substantiate that Davis actually mentored Obama (among other claims), such a relationship could have provided a bi-racial teenager with the key to success in mainstream America. To minimize criticism and maximize their potential, bi-racial African-Americans must walk a narrow identity path between group expectations. Davis was uniquely qualified to show the way. He may have significantly facilitated Obama’s vision of an inclusive society.
Davis may have advised Obama that to succeed in mainstream America, African-Americans must consider worst-case scenarios without wearing a chip on their shoulders, even though this normally requires judgment borne through actual experience. They must learn to give others (such as Cliff Kincaid) the benefit of the doubt. Success within mainstream America requires that abusive behavior should be attributed to bias only when there is no other plausible explanation.
Davis’ crusty radicalism may have perfectly counterbalanced Hawaii’s laid-back lifestyle for an African-American teenager destined for greatness. He provided coherent insight on African-American history, politics, and culture vis-à-vis mainstream America. Obama’s grandfather may not have recognized the true value of his gift.
Davis recognized the folly of cultural nationalism, including Black Separatist movements, long before meeting Obama. He supported a fully integrated mixed economy, because neither laissez–faire capitalism nor Marxist authoritarianism enable the greatest benefit for the greatest number. He also had a libertarian streak that may have made Ron Paul proud.
As an honorable man, Kincaid must be unaware that by the 1970’s, the twin forces of Hawaiian and hippie cultures had mellowed Davis to the point that “Stalinist” charges are especially absurd. By the early 1970’s, Davis had become a virtual teddy bear, a permanent fixture of the Koa Cottages in the “Waikiki Jungle,” noted for its counterculture residents. Davis was known as a kindly old man, usually sitting on his porch a few steps from Kuhio Avenue, waving at all that passed. Although he had little money, he was always willing to share with those in deeper need.
While he was justifiably bitter over the Jim Crow racism of his youth, recent decades made Davis quite optimistic regarding race relations. He strongly supported the nonviolent strategy of Dr. King, and believed that all mankind should be judged by the content of their character. He rejected militant African-American groups as counterproductive.
Kincaid and his honorable colleagues must also be unaware that although Davis shared King’s opposition to American intervention in Vietnam, he did not oppose his son’s decision to join the Air Force in 1968. His son eventually retired as an Air Force Intelligence Officer after 24 years of service, with full TS/SCI (SI/TK/G/B) access. As an honorable man, this fact alone should mitigate any concerns about “Obama’s Marxist Mentor.”
As an honorable man, Cliff Kincaid must also be unaware that his portrayal of a raving Stalinist could not be further from the truth. Davis deeply loved the United States, despite his occasional flirtation with radical ideology. He recognized, perhaps belatedly, that the United States offers a unique combination of economic opportunity and personal freedom, thus providing sufficient strength and moral authority to champion human rights worldwide. If he HAD been so lucky, Barack Obama could not have found a finer mentor anywhere.

is just one of several that was published in Broowaha Reno by a writer calling herself Morgana out of Reno, NV.
Did you know that proletarianized means propertyless? In college, I was taught a story about a young writer that was impatiently speaking with T.S. Eliot . The writer was annoyingly full of himself. He resentfully complained to Eliot that “it is so pointless to study the thinkers of the past because we know so much more than they.” Eliot, recognizing the arrogance of ignorance, replied with dry banter, “Yes, they are what we know.” Karl Marx was born in 1818 and died in 1883. He was a passionate democrat as his life was lived during a bleak industrial period. That period forged intolerance in Marx. He grew to feel that he was a spokesman for that time’s victims. Marx evolved his economic philosophy of the struggle among economic classes. The rich versus the poor. Marx believed that the ruling economic class always clashes with the ruled economic class. That was, and remains, enough of a belief to alarm “conservatives,” as * hostility by the ruling and anxiety by the ruled is the consequence of economic struggle. In Marx’s view, with capitalism there is a constant conflict over wages and profits. Marx diagnosed capitalism as disorderly with an eventual demise. So what is capitalism? According to Marx, it is an evolving economic system. It is an evolving economic system that legally accords the right of ownership to all persons. It is an evolving economic system that legally accords the right of ownership to all persons via a market. It is an evolving economic system that legally accords the right of ownership to all persons via a market with the right to enter into legal contracts. The result is that a capitalist worker has the legal right to work how, when and where they choose. That is a radical and very young sentiment in the history of mankind. It brought quarrels often escalating into wars, two of them world-wide, uncertainty, individual suffering, rapid development, freedom, accomplishment, and a continuing tension between the economic drive of laissez-faire and the political orientation of intervention. In a market system, people freely respond to the opportunities and discouragement of economic activities; that is business affairs, financial etc. Capitalism means that there is a market with a regular flow of wealth into production. Charging or paying interest, which used to be a sin in some societies, and remains so in the Muslim religion, suddenly pumped immense wealth into production. Land, labor and capital are the factors of production. Before capitalism, land, labor and capital were not commodities for sale in a command economic system. Land was once only the basis for military or civil administration’s power. Labor was once only the unpaid social duty of serfs and slaves. Capital was once only a craftsman’s tools. Capitalism developed out of the holes in the medieval system. Land became real estate with its bundle of rights. Labor was divorced from social standing. Capital transformed treasure. A market is a powerful force for the vast accumulation of capital and wealth. Marx saw that force had an exigency or a collapse everywhere in it. A market is an inefficient system for supplying goods and services with no price tag, such as public health, public education, public law enforcement, public defense, public infrastructure, public recreation, and government. The reason is that a market society underallocates resources to them because there is no means of bidding funds into them. Markets promote inequities. A market is a devoted servant of the wealthy. It is indifferent to the poor. There is no justice or fairness in a market. Marx believed that economic instability just kept increasing once the middle economic class was gone. Time proved Marx correct in that theory. In the United States, the 1980s were the crucial economic turnabout of wealth. At an intense pace, the deliberate war on labor erupted. Unpaid labor grew as labor lost most of its income. The economist Wallace Peterson has called it a “silent depression .” Marx saw surplus value, also known as unpaid labor, as the source of profit. According to Marx, unpaid labor is the built-in instability of capitalism as it results in two economic classes with the rich versus the poor. Did you know that proletarianized means propertyless? Marx believed that proletarianized people become embittered people. Because crisis is the norm of capitalism according to Marx, little businesses do not survive the crisis so the trend is to ever increasing big ** corporations. Time proved Marx correct also in that theory. So exactly, how do these opinions of Karl Marx make Obama a Marxist? Economics is just another tool for us to intelligently make our way through life. It helps us to be better citizens, workers, investors, and voters. It’s not about one particular point of view. It is about teaching rather than preaching to arrive at an informed opinion to better shape our private and public destinies. Economics is many opinions. They are controversial opinions at best, always evolving at worst. Economic opinions are not put forth as The One and Only Truth though. Although I do not agree with nor support the monetarist views of Milton Friedman , I do find a statement of his to be true: “We are all Keynesians now.” John Maynard Keynes made an even severer diagnosis of capitalism than Marx ever did. Keynes predicted something that I believe we are today living in – stagflation , a subject in itself for another article, supporting again the argument for using government to represent the interests of the future to the present. * Witness Dick Cheney’s “Fuck You” retort .** I believe that the concept of a corporation is questionable at best.
