CORRECTION: This item originally cited Ace of Spades as having uncovered that Obama's mentor was Frank Marshall Davis, a man with Communist roots. It was in fact Cliff Kincaid at Accuracy in Media. I regret the error.
Religion is the opiate of the masses. -- Karl Marx, 1843
It's not surprising that they get bitter, they cling to . . . religion . . . as a way to explain their frustrations. -- Barack Obama, 2008
Has anyone else pointed out the striking similarity between Barack Obama's recent statement about tough economic times driving people to religion and that of another person who preached change: Karl Marx?
Obama added guns and xenophobia to his list of proletarian elixirs for bitterness. But the fundamental point remains: Barack apparently doesn't take religion, his own or anyone else's, too seriously. It's not a search for truth or an attempt to live in accordance with God's word. It's just a way to get by, a stupefacient that helps proles endure the pain of living in an economy unfairly dominated by the "haves." Karl would concur.
This morning's Today did take up the controversy that Obama's remark has kicked up. View video here.
Of course there was no suggestion at Today that Obama might have been channeling Marx. But is the notion outlandish? Consider what Cliff Kincaid at Accuracy in Media has uncovered about Frank Marshall Davis, the mentor Obama almost surely describes in his book Dreams from My Father:
[T]hrough Frank Marshall Davis, Obama had an admitted relationship with someone who was publicly identified as a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). The record shows that Obama was in Hawaii from 1971-1979, where, at some point in time, he developed a close relationship, almost like a son, with Davis, listening to his "poetry" and getting advice on his career path. But Obama, in his book, Dreams From My Father, refers to him repeatedly as just "Frank."
The reason is apparent: Davis was a known communist who belonged to a party subservient to the Soviet Union. In fact, the 1951 report of the Commission on Subversive Activities to the Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii identified him as a CPUSA member. What's more, anti-communist congressional committees, including the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), accused Davis of involvement in several communist-front organizations.
Trevor Loudon, a New Zealand-based libertarian activist, researcher and blogger, noted evidence that "Frank" was Frank Marshall Davis in a posting in March of 2007.
Will the MSM get around to exploring Obama's radical roots and abiding ideology? A few more candid statements from the candidate along the lines of his "clinging to religion" remark, might just force the media's hand.

Yes
April 12, 2008 - 08:44 ET by OldSailor88This will be ignored and smoothed over just like the Rev. Wright

April 12, 2008 - 12:10 ET by DEVILDOCMOMHere is a recent quote from bho trying to explain what he really meant: "“I didn’t say it as well as I should have,” Obama said in Muncie, Ind. “Because the truth is, these traditions that are passed on from generation to generation, those are important...".
Wonderful, now he is saying small town America passes on a tradition of bitterness. What a guy.
I know none of us here will forget this demeaning statement, but the failing media will let it go by the beginning of next week.
Thank you for your service.
PS Did anyone else hear the speech he gave in (I think) Indiana where he said the right to bear arms was a "tradation"...sure later in the speech he mentioned the Second Amendment, but we can see where he is really coming from in his beliefs.

Imploding Dem party
April 12, 2008 - 09:02 ET by Mr. TerryObama is so far left that he's making Hillary look like a moderate. Even though people can't stand her royal deceitfulness these kinds of comments might keep her in the race a little longer...Dems are imploding because of all this. Obama just insulted 3/4's of the country with his elitist arrogance.
This is the time for McCain to make a stand for middle America and conservative values. He could have a landslide if he would.

April 12, 2008 - 09:44 ET by NL207The Dems are imploding? I think not!
While I think the Dem chance to gain the Whitehouse this year are slim to none, at the same time, they will extend their conttrol over both houses of Congress. The Schumer/Emmanuel strategy is working to perfection. The massive smear campaign they have been waging with Media complicity has born bountiful fruits. In our region, the Republicans are having great difficulty recruiting quality candidates for the House and Senate. No one wants to run on the Republican Party line because they all know full well they will be subjected to harassment, invasion of privacy, false charges an even burglary in the quest for dirt.
The thing I find most amazing about all of this is Schumer himself. This is a man who clearly violated the Hatch Act as a Congressman. He was censured by his own party for this corruption but was never prosecuted. Now he is an influential Senator pedaling his filth wherever and whenever. He belongs in jail.

April 12, 2008 - 10:23 ET by ahusserThere is a lot of animosity against McCain among conservatives, warranted or not. If he is elected (and I think he will be) it will be a hard Presidency. He will be up against a democratic congress. His only defense will be the bully pulpit and the veto. He only will be able to hold the line. There will be no advancing any GOP (read conservative) initiatives. He will be attacked from within his party and overwhelmingly from the dims and the media. He will be marginalized like President Bush was. I blame the present Administration and GOP congress for this. It was their's to lose and they did, through a combination of lack of foresight, insight, ignorance and arrogance.

Dems can still win the White House
April 12, 2008 - 11:33 ET by shawn228Things look grim for the Dems right now, but if Obama and Hillary run on the same ticket, there is a very good chance they can get back the voters they lost.
Even if they don't, the election is 7 months away, anything can happen between now and then.

April 15, 2008 - 09:40 ET by mbuelNo way in hell. Look at how HRC is using this speech in San Fran against him, and how BHO, is responding to her. There is simply no way. Plus given how repulsive BHO is making himself to moderates, such a ticket would probably hurt the both of them more.
The facts:
In polls dems indicate that if Obama was picked 26% would vote for McCain. If it was vice versa 16% would vote for McCain over Hillary.
HRC has gained 20 points in polls over BHO in Pennsylvania. That's a huge gain in such a short amount of time, and it's only going to increase as BHO steps in it every time he opens his mouth.

April 12, 2008 - 15:30 ET by NL207If Obama is the nominee, and barring a miracle comeback by Clinton, he will be, the national election campaign will focus in on all this radical left philosophy of Obama. Quite frankly, if everyday Americans knew exactly where he stood on every issue instead of this rhetorical pablum he broadcasts, he could not even be re-elected Senator from Illinois, much less President. He may as well be a card-carrying Communist. I personally regard the man as a public enemy.
Gray Davis found out what happens even amongst the bluest voters when the toilets don't flush and the lights don't come on. Obama's policies are the essence of these kinds of problems.
Everything is all Bushs fault
April 12, 2008 - 20:05 ET by shawn228That is what many people in America think. Gas prices are high, we are at war, most think we are in a recession including Greenspan.
It is not all Bush's fault, but enough people think it is to make a huge difference
If Obama keeps driving this point home if he is the nominee and brings up Katrina and the war enough times, it could win him the White House.
The people that think McCain will take this quite easily are in a for a rude awakening

How many voted against the welfare check for every American, even if they didn't pay taxes?

While I like seeing optimists out there, this is a still wishcast. Be sure to vote (and pray) that neither Democrat gets elected. anti-republican sentiment
April 14, 2008 - 09:04 ET by mbuelI think most of the "anti-republican" sentiment came from republican voters... some of it warranted (like the war on our borders, language and culture that the republicans refuse to defend) some of it not, (like the constant war against conservatism by the media that paints any conservative action as a bad one.)
IMO, the voters that were feeling this antipathy towards the party, WERE going to vote for Obama. In fact some of them did vote for Obama in the primaries. (you can see this in early polling), but Obama's continual self destruction, by insulting the very people that he should be trying to attract will ensure that those voters do not vote for him.
And that doesn't even include the pro-union dems that are currently backing HRC.

Contrast Hillary's method of deceit with Obama's method
April 12, 2008 - 09:08 ET by jrichThe contrast between Hillary Clinton's method of deceit and Barack Obama's method of deceit is very instructive, and frightening. Hillary Clinton (and Bill) are straightforward liars. They lie. And when they get caught (happening more and more) they use some lame excuse like "I misspoke".
Obama on the other hand, and his enablers, use the "out of context" excuse. Insulting. They attempt to make YOU believe that if you were more thoughtful or more careful, you would understand and agree with what Obama said. In other words, you're stupid for misunderstanding what Obama meant.
Hillary Clinton's brand of deceit, straightforward lying, relies on enablers and the media to give her a pass.
Barack Obama's brand of deceit, you didn't understand the entire context, relies on the belief that his listeners are stupid.
Both methods of deceit are unacceptable for a wannabe President; however, Obama's brand of deceit is far more insulting.
jrich: A very provocative
April 12, 2008 - 10:54 ET by QueenMumjrich: A very provocative analysis. You're absolutely right. Obama's rhetoric is designed to confuse in such a way that the average listener is made to think that the only reason they can't understand what he's trying to say is because his rhetoric is so lofty. All you have to do is look at Obama's interview with CNBC's Maria Bartiromo. Link: http://www.cnbc.com/id/23835435Obama Obama continuously uses thinly veiled language like "creating a tax code that is more equitable"or "those of us in the upper brackets have benefited disproportionately from a globalized economy."
It's all there. He is at the very least, a far left Democrat. Unfortunately I feel that based on his mentors and relationships with his church he is more of a socialist that feels that the only solution is wealth redistribution and government controll through taxation of assetts as to create some artificial equality.
Hopefully someone out there will "Swift-Commie" Obama since McCain seems hell bent on some "Play nice" campain.

Gator -- I have to disagree
April 12, 2008 - 10:37 ET by Jack BauerGator -- I have to disagree with you on McCain's campaign strategy here.
While I don't like many of his "liberal" positions, McCain (or his team) has correctly sussed out how to combat the saintly Barack Obama. Something the Clintons have never done, except briefly about two months ago.
Obama is a passive-aggressive counter-puncher. The Clintons have been made for him. They have been throwing heavier and heavier punches for a year, and he has just side-stepped and punched them in the face.
You'll note that McCain ain't playing that game. He and his team are just waiting for Obama to say or do something, and then they have been counter-punching back.
It's working too. McCain has got a very fast reaction team working for him. I have to kudos him on that, especially when you consider that McCain is naturally a hyper-hyper aggressive.
Obama's not that bright.
April 12, 2008 - 10:55 ET by pbthinkerI don't believe Obama's that bright. I do believe he has some really good people in his campaign. He has good people that were disenchanted with the Clintons and, during the primary, their focus has been to put the Clintons in their place. He's had the advantage of a fawning press not asking him the tough questions, ones that he has to answer on the spot, especially during the debates. Somehow, you have to believe this will end, during the general election, and the Democrats better do some serious vetting, before then.
IMHO, since they've avoided vetting their candidates, they have the 2 worst candidates left for the general election, but that's just my opinion. For Obama to be elected, the media is going to have to invent experience for him he doesn't have which, for the American media, shouldn't be a problem.

yeah uh
April 13, 2008 - 00:54 ET by botgactually he does okay joking with the press and can cogently explain his positions with unrehearsed questions. Does he stumble now and then? yes especially with the word nuclear.
“The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.” -Chief Justice John Roberts
In the case of the word "nuclear"
April 14, 2008 - 07:27 ET by sarcasmoThere's no "now and then." Bush would have needed to pronounce the word correctly at least once, and AFAIK he has yet to manage that linguistic feat.

The comparison is
April 14, 2008 - 07:49 ET by PeskyDaneThe comparison is disingenous since our president does not put himself out there as a great speaker. I have been speaking in public for 20 years as part of my job and as an invited guest and I still dread it to this day. I am the fist person to admit that I need to write it down for myself.
Obama, on the other hand is supposed to have this great reputation for public speaking and yet can't seem to string a two thoughts together much less get it past his teeth without intense rehearsal or an ear piece.
BTW, I don't believe you that you've never seen any footage of the president correctly pronouncing that word. The fact that you even assert such an obvious falshood says way too much about you.
What's more, your whole "a plauge on both your houses" libertarian B.S. that you throw around on this site has worn thin.
Nope. I've told the truth, as usual.
April 14, 2008 - 07:52 ET by sarcasmoI have yet to see Bush pronounce that word correctly. I'd welcome video that proves he can, but my words remain the truth. They'll stay true no matter how you try to slant them or slam me as a liar. I'm not. You may not like what I say, but I tell you people the truth daily. Deal with it, because I don't feel like either changing or going away.

Let's try this special test,
April 14, 2008 - 08:07 ET by PeskyDaneLet's try this special test, since you insist on parsing: Using the standard of perponderance, is it more likely that the president has pronounced the word correctly, or less likely?
Frankly?
April 14, 2008 - 08:16 ET by sarcasmoI'd put the chances of anyone finding & posting video/audio of Bush pronouncing it correctly at about 50/50.
It remains a 100%-wrong "nukular" from every instance I've ever heard out of his mouth, just as I said, with 0% correct. But I'm not a big fan of political speeches from Presidents, so if a correct pronunciation instance can be found, it's not too likely that I heard it.

Yes.. and he sounds better
April 14, 2008 - 07:16 ET by Jack BauerYes.. and he sounds better than Obama. So what's your point?
My point is that Obama is a manufactured fraud with a ersatz black church preacher style of rhetoric that collapses outside specific controlled environments.
He is also very very boring. Not that young (48), and not that good looking (he looks like a big eared peanut).
And what that has to do with a two term President who is leaving office still beats me. Though you seem to find that relevant.
The boring, big-eared peanut
April 14, 2008 - 08:26 ET by JerIf you truly believe the "big-eared peanut" is a "boring, manufactured fraud" as well as a "smug introvert without a sense of humor"; and tend to agree with others here who suggest Obama is "not too bright", you might be interested in this article appearing at the conservative website, townhall.com, submitted by a conservative classmate of Obama during the latter's term as president of the Harvard Law Review.
It's a quick read. I'll be watching for your reaction.

I never said he wasn't
April 14, 2008 - 08:40 ET by Jack BauerI never said he wasn't "bright." I also don't agree with someone just because they are a fellow conservative.
I think it is becoming gleefully obvious to those of us who were orginally of the mind that Obama would cream McCain (i.e. ME), that this was a false conclusion based on uh -- a mirage.
I always though him an empty spacesuit floating in the vacuum of space -- but, so what? It's all about the perception of articute versus the reality of glib.
But I didn't understand that his whole persona was so paper-thin that he can be punctured quite so easily, when confronted by anything uh,,,, resembling uh... an--- uh... unscripted... uh... questions.
To recycle a cliche -- he's not ready for prime time and that will be painfully exposed during one to one debates. IMHO... and no matter what another fellow Harva Mater thinks.
They do tend to support each other don't they these Ivy Leaguers? No matter the party? Like the Yalees?
I have never bought into
April 14, 2008 - 09:26 ET by JerI have never bought into the Obama "Rock Star" persona, nor am I yet convinced he possesses the "right stuff" to be President--and he has demonstrated that he is not beyond the bewildering, eminently unpolitical, verbal gaffe--but I think you seriously underestimate the man if you consider him just an empty "spacesuit" floating aimlessly in an intellectual vacuum unless reading a canned speech.

April 14, 2008 - 23:44 ET by cleverpigHe's had debates. Twenty, in fact. The general consensus is that while he doesn't have quite the power of a stand alone oratory, he acquits himself just fine.
Exactly, pb. The reason
April 12, 2008 - 11:09 ET by QueenMumExactly, pb. The reason Obama keeps getting tripped up is that he's "reading" from a script. I think he believes in the message. But he's either not taking the time to analyze his speeches in broad political terms, or he's indeed dumber than the media would have us believe. And that's why I believe there is a movement of some sort - under the radar - that has crafted Obama's image, is funding his campaign, and dictating his purported policies. And it ain't the DNC. Does this make me a member in good standing of the "Tin Foil Hat Society"? Or am I on to something?

April 12, 2008 - 11:23 ET by Jack BauerQM -- no, you are on to something big.
He started courting and making cash donations to the Super-Delegates in... 2005!!
And he's outspent Clinto by 4 to 1 in that effort with about $800,000.
This whole campaign has been carefully crafted and funded going back to at least (I'm guessing) his "rapturously received" speech at the 2004 convention.
There are people behind him in the shaows alright. I imagine SOROS is one name.

April 12, 2008 - 11:38 ET by QueenMumJack: So the 2004 Convention was Obama's "Coming Out Party" - so to speak. Someone needs to do some good, old-fashioned journalistic detective work and find out more about who created the media darling that is Barack Hussein Obama. What are the chances that's going to happen, Jack?
And how carefully has his campaign funding been scrutinized? I, for one, don't believe the media story that it's all "grassroots" contributions. And I think that the TUCC would be a good place to start looking.

April 12, 2008 - 14:08 ET by red_dragon311I have said this before, but I don't like how McCain is handling Barack H-word Obama.
he's too afriad to say anything and be looked at like a racist, bottom line.
So saying Obama would be a good president, saying that the saying of his middle name is offensive...

April 12, 2008 - 10:32 ET by ConservativeRexWhat more does this elitist bugger Uhbama have to say or do? This is ridiculous. I don't think the voters in PA will let him get by with this crap. But he just doesn't mean PA, he means EVERY small town all over our country.
This rascal had better not ever get close to the White House. When times get difficult most of us lean a little harder on our religion. For him to denigrate that is low and mean. And this little CS has to say something like this in SF. He doesn't have the guts to say it in PA. Let him say this to someone's face, the little yellowbelly.
Not only will we keep our religion, we'll damn sure keep a strong hold on our guns. Someone as weak as this piss ant is will never take either from us. I am at the point where I hope him and his ilk will try.

April 12, 2008 - 10:45 ET by QueenMumWell done, Mark. I hope you've indeed started the ball rolling on Obama's Marxist ideology. And I hope John McCain's campaign is saving up all of these Obama's "slips" in order to make the case against him for the general election. McCain better take the gloves off by then.

It won't stop
April 12, 2008 - 11:00 ET by HumblepieThe Obama supporters have drank the magic kool-aid. Any anti-religious/government comment made in California is greeted with zeal. While at the same time his tirades lean to the opposite to garner support in the mid-west and Atlantic states. He changes enough words to disguise his platform. Has anyone ever actually heard how he plans on changing things... I don't mean the daily rhetoric that spews from his mouth, I mean the actual nuts and bolts of "HOW" he's going to change it? This man is the best lier we've seen in our lifetime and his wife is not any better.
We need to keep the news services accountable for their action, or lack there of, and publicly chastise them at every opportunity.

Well humble, if Michelle
April 12, 2008 - 11:29 ET by QueenMumWell humble, if Michelle Obama speaks for her husband, then I presume Sen. Obama's changes involve moving the country in the direction of all-out Socialism. The "pie" needs to be reconstructed in such a manner that all the pieces are equal. Not that all the people are created equal. But that all the people have an equal piece of the pie, whether they've contributed to the ingredients or not. Any person of average intelligence can see that this means more taxes for those who produce the wealth and no accountability for those who choose to wait for others to take care of them. And that such "changes" clearly fly in the face of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and everything that makes America great.
No thank you, Mr. Obama! Go back to Chicago and distribute your own wealth among the disadvantaged on the South Side instead of blaming the government and the taxpayers of America.

Communist
April 12, 2008 - 11:42 ET by iveseenitallSome of us have been saying it for a while now. Obama is a Communist. Don't dismiss it. Anyone who has studied this anti-American philosophy to any extent can see it clearly. I am so glad to see the words "communism" and "Marxism" finally being used in connection with this guy, his wife, his "minister", and so many of his associates. And Barry himself is just not smart enough to hide it until he gets elected. He will be exposed in the general election. The McCain people are waging a nice, passive campaign right now. Good.
