Kondracke Craves Christie Todd as McCain Veep

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Mort Kondracke got one thing right: Rush Limbaugh would go Krakatoa . . .

The resident moderate of The Beltway Boys has counseled John McCain to offer the VP slot to Christie Todd Whitman. Mort made his move during last evening's show-ending "Buzz" segment.
MORTON KONDRACKE: Two new McCain Veep ideas: first, he should offer the Vice-Presidency to Colin Powell, who may well not take it. If not Powell, then Christie Todd Whitman, former governor of New Jersey. Rush Limbaugh would go Krakatoa but independents will like it, women will like it, and so will African-Americans, the whole package.
Conservatives will surely say Christie Todd is "the whole package" of liberal Republicanism that would leave part of the GOP base sitting on its hands come November. During her tenure as head of the Environmental Protection Agency in the current Bush administration, Whitman frequently clashed with its more conservative members over a number of policies. She ultimately resigned and wrote a book, It's My Party, Too which made the case for her brand of Republicanism and criticized the policies of the Bush administration.

So . . . what do readers think? Smart choice or sure to alienate the party's base? There's no denying that Rush's reaction would provide entertainment value for months to come.

Aside: Mort seemed to suggest that offering the VP nomination to Powell would be largely for symbolic value. Would Powell be so sure to decline it, and if by chance he accepted how would people view him in contrast with Christie Todd?

Time to pick the best while Barry and Hillary fight

Not sure if Christine Todd  is the right choice, although a possibility. I think Powell is a good one too. If we could get Condolezza Rice in there it would be the best. Since the democrats are eating their young it provides time to pick the best candidate for the fall run. A strong ticket combined with the democratic freak show show get Republicans in for another four years. I like Rush and he probably will be critical of any candidate that doesn't pass true conservative muster....but we also want a ticket that can win. Whatever that ends up being McCain has a lot of patching to do to get the Republicans unified again.

Miket53   http://mtaricani.blogspot.com/

Politically speaking. . .

Powell is a dirt ball.  He knew for months that Richard Armitage was the source of the Valerie Plame leak and he didn't tell Bush, Cheney or the press.  He essentially let Rove & Libby twist in the wind and Libby was eventually convicted.  Nice job dirt ball, way to show where your loyalty lies.

As for Dr. Rice, I think that anybody that's associated with the Bush administration is damaged goods.  I don't think McCain is a big fan of any of them and I certainly don't think that the party wants this election to be a fight over the intel and lead up to the Iraq War.  Rice is also pro-abortion.

Kondracke is a dyed-in-the-wool liberal, not a moderate.  I would take his suggestions as proof that his proposed candidate is a liberal.

Well put...

Couldn't have said it better. Whatever minimal respect I had for Colin Powell (I was never a huge fan of his), evaporated completely when the Plame mess hit the fan and we found out that he knew that Armitage was the leak source. What a weasel he turned out to be.

Except For Terror War, Kondracke Is Always Left

Kondracke is the "resident moderate" of Beltway Boys?

Does that make Fred Barnes the "resident Conservative?"

I'll remember that the next time Barnes tells me I'm a racist because I want America's immigration laws enforced.

McCain has written off Conservatives.

He knows we have only two choices.

We can let Obama or Clinton win the election.

Or, we can hold a barf bag in one hand and push the McCain button with the other hand.

The only possible pressure Conservatives can bring on McCain is to withhold campaign donations.

There is already a clear undercurrent of concern about money being voiced at many levels of the Republican Party.

If McCain hears about that fear every day, at every venue, from every GOP official, he may have to revise his election strategy.

Condi as Veep

She is a great gal and role model but is really ineffectual as far as presentation. She reminds me of a mild mannered superwoman. Not dynamic enough.

Maybe she can come back to

Maybe she can come back to California in 2010 and finally make mincemeat out of that serial lightweight Barbara Boxer.  That buffoon was simply a passenger on the '92 "Year of the Woman" Express...and only managed to win because her sleazy campaign floated a strip club allegation against her opponent in the final days.  Ever since, she has run virtually unopposed in her reelection bids.  It's humiliating to come from a State that is represented by this smug piece of human excrement...so humiliating that I'd even consider holding my nose to vote for Schwarzenegger should he emerge from his gubenatorial failure to take a shot at the Senate.  Come on Condi, we need you in California...you can sort out that disrespectful little tramp once-and-for-all.

Conservatives Win

Solid conservatives, standing up for their principals and running on a positive "America Can Do" platform win. Whitman comes from a long line of exemplary New Jersey officials; Bob the Torch, Jim McGreevey, Jon Corzine, various crooked mayors and Tony Soprano. These people all know what it takes to get elected in New Jersey.

Tony Soprano? Hey... he'd

Tony Soprano? Hey... he'd get the job done.

Of course, he'd eventually close down Gitmo ... but the inmates would accidently "fall" 15,000 feet from the Hercules transporting them over shark infested water

Oh -- and the Gitmopes would be begging for waterboarding after a session with Paulie 'Walnuts.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

Not this female voter

Why do these political pundits continue to believe that all Americans vote based on identity politics? I won't be voting for a white person because I'm white, a female because I'm female, or an Irish descendent because I'm Irish.

To Kondracke: It's about the issues, Stupid.

Come on, Viv, you know that

Come on, Viv, you know that if somehow Scarlett O'Hara could be brought back, you'd vote for her in a hearbeat ;-)

Frankly Mark, she does give

Frankly Mark, she does give a damn.

By definition, any pol from NJ should be discounted. With the possible exception of Louisiana, NJ is the politically most corrupt state in the union. All Democrats (and even Republicans are Democrats in NJ) there steal and make deals with the Mafia.

Let's see how long Corzine can keep out of prison.

Dems pick Gop VP now?

We let them pick McCain for us and now they think they're putting a bee in the bonnet of the GOP for the VP slot?     They're running their own Operation Chaos but i don't think the conservative base is going to allow this.

WHITMAN'S A WASTE

I live in NJ (unfortunately) and remember when Whitman came onto the political scene. In the backlash against Florio and Clinton she almost knocked off Bill Bradley in his Senate reelection race. Later, in her race for govenor she used the groundswell of anger against Florio and promised to repeal the assault gun ban, lower taxes and push for Initative and Referendum. She got my vote along with other pissed off NJ residents and was elected.

And guess what, 15 years later we still have the most restrictive and arcane gun laws in the nation, the highest taxes in the nation and still no Initiatve and Referendum. NJ is broke and "Christie" had a big role in getting us there. The democrats have done more than their fair share of sending this state down the sewer, but "Christie" got the ball rolling. This state is so corrupt and messed up more than half of the residents want to leave! Can you hear that Mort?

When she ran for reelection, I and a lot others did not vote for her and she was barely got back in aginst McGreevey (the other Jersey Joke). She squandered the opportunity she was given and the citizens of NJ are still paying for it. If McCain wants to loose then he should listen to "ole Mort", because picking a looser like her for a running mate will get him what we now have in NJ!

Better Suggestion

I have a better suggestion for Kondrake. Why don't you suggest McCain pick the loser of the Democratic nomination?  Perhaps in a show of true bi-partisanship, McCain will even stand-down in favor of the Democrat loser.

The Press would laud McCain.

(PS the Dems will accuse Cristie Todd Whitman of exposing 911 workers to toxic materials. There is already a lawsuit underway)

As another Blue Garden Stater,

D A is correct. Ask us "If corruption is normal, NJ can't get any better" folks and we'll let you know about ms rhino, and her "let's mortgage the future" way of thinking.

Yex, taxes "disappeared", into usage fees, which were higher and added onto everything - if you add a ceiling fan in your house, you get taxed, because your' "moving" more air!

As D A says, she was so out of her league, we now want to leave, due to poor management of poorly concieved plans, by a liberal hiding in a republican "pant suit"! Mr. McCain, (and mort), think about that.

resentment

I resent your implication that NJ is the most corrupt state in the Union. I sincerely believe that the State of Chicago (and that's how we downstaters see it...) is the most corrupt. Chicago has one governor in prison (Ryan) another potentially on his way (Blagojevich), and a do-nothing Senator poised for the White House.

Chicago is the home of voter fraud. It's how Mayor Daley I (and maybe II?) got in office. More dead people vote in Cook County than living people in some counties south of I-80.

Home to the Rezko trial, the SOS/CDL fiasco/fraud and an illegal immigrant seeking sanctuary in a store-front church. I say again, I resent your implication that NJ is more corrupt than here.

that said.... sarcasm switch flipped back to off.... have a great day!

Fascism is a religious conception in which man is seen in his imminent relationship with a superior law and with an objective will that transcends the particular individual - Mussolini

NJ PERFECTED CORRUPTION

In NJ office holders can hold more than one elected position. Can Chigago top that?

In NJ they have over 5 million people listed as registered voters. They never take off the names of the dead and people who move out of state. So now, that there is a recall petition being circulated to get rid of the Goldman-Sachs wonder boy, Jon (help Hillary get elected so I can become secretary of the treasury and do for the country what I did for NJ) Corzine they need over 2 million signatures to qualify.

Finally, Hudson County has had the dead voting for dozens of generations and they can give a run to Cook County or any other like it in the country. Remember, this is the "Soprano State" and I suggest if anyone wants to know about it they should read the book with the same name written by Bob Ingle!

Good luck with that

Good luck with that recall.  I'd love to see it happen.  Just hope that you get someone better than Schwarzenegger in the unlikely event that Corzine gets clipped.

Please note that only registered voters can sign the petition and they must sign the one for their county (Yep, that's right-there are 21 county petitions that need to be circulated. You thought I was kidding about nj perfecting corruption?). Also, the petition needs to be notorized. The website has links to people who will notarize it for nothing.

 Good Luck!

Rush

I don't understand why Mort thinks Rush will care what McCain does. I have a feeling he is one of those who doesn't listen to Rush, but forms his ideas about what Rush thinks based upon what other libs say.  Rush has more or less said that he isn't rooting for the Republican. Rush said that he is not a Republican, but a conservative. He says conservatives will fare better if we can get enough Republicans in Congress to oppose a Dem in the White House. His fear is that if McCain gets in the Republicans will go along with his harebrained liberal ideas for the sake of party unity.

Hate That Segment

First let me say that I hate the final segment of the Beltway Boys. Mort always says something like "don't go anywhere, there is lots more to come!" Then they do five minutes of commercials, and when they come back, Fred says one sentence, Mort says maybe two sentences, and then the show ends. This one was typical. Sammon said one sentence, then Mort said your quote, and buh-bye. Sucks.

I'd say Mort was more left-of-moderate than die-hard-liberal.

Whitman is hated by the left because they feel she tried to pave the planet as head of the EPA, even though we conservatives felt she bent over backward for them, and we hate her for that.

Nah, she's a terrible choice. And although I have mixed feelings about Powell, he'd be a really awful vice-president because he would hate the job so much you would see it on his face every time you saw him.

No people, when you think of Vice-President choices, please try to think of it in terms of McCain's age. The choice could very well become President in the next four years. I am not trying to jinx the McCain Presidency, but it is something we must all think about when we think about this choice!

Where is Moderate

Jer, probably because we have differing opinions of where, exactly, we think a "moderate" is in the political spectrum.  <GRIN> We're probably more in agreement than we think.

Thanks for agreeing on Kay Bailey. She rocks!

You're absolutely right, Joel.

You're absolutely right, Joel.

VP

I like the comment by Joel. Kay Baily H. is a terrific Senator in her own right . She has said she would accept a VP draft but was not comfortable campaigning for it . She would bring some genuine gravitas to a feeble Republican ticket.

my pick for VP

I wouldn't mind Romney or Fred Thompson.

Whitman? No way, she's a spineless RINO if I ever saw one. Wait, that's sorta what McCain is too. Maybe they would be perfect together....

 (makes gagging sound)

"independents will like it"

THAT'S THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!

Independents will like it!!!!!!

CAN'T WIN WITHOUT THEM. Finished being obvious :D

   Well it's really quite

Well it's really quite simple.  If obama get's the nomination then MaCain chooses a woman VP to get the dissapointed democrat women's vote. If hillary gets the nomination McCain picks a minority person to pick up some of barry's people.  McCains a shoe-in.

That is a good idea. JC

That is a good idea. JC Watts or Bobby Jindhal if Hillary is nominated, Kay Bailey Hutchinson or Sarah Palin if B. Hussein Obama is nominated.

CTW as a VP candidate? What

CTW as a VP candidate? What the hey! If "Mayday" McCain wants to relive the experience being shot down and then tortured for 5 years, I say go ahead. She's even on board with that whole AGW bullshit. What could possibly go wrong?

Mort Kondracke is a

Mort Kondracke is a self-absorbed jackass without the first clue about what would appeal to anything.  He pretends to be a "moderate" so he can make stupid comments in free range without too many people holding him responsible for the stupidity.  The mere suggestion that either Christie Todd Whitman or Colin Powell would be deemed acceptable running mates for McCain is laughably idiotic and simply highlights Kondracke's typical intellectual deficiency.

Much as I hate to say it, McCain is going to pick Charlie Crist.  This is going to be another one of those 2-4 swing state elections, and McCain's people will likely think that Crist will give McCain a much-needed boost in one of the biggest if not the biggest swing state.

     If McCain chooses

If McCain chooses Crist that could be good for FL. But very bad for the nation...

I hear you, wwsmith.  But I

I hear you, wwsmith.  But I live in California where that incompetent boob Arnold Schwarzenegger has stewarded over an economy that, optimistically, will be budgeted for a $14 Billion deficit.  And he still manages to pull a 60% + approval rating while talking about nothing but funding for public schools and Global Warming initiatives.  It totally baffles me that an utter failure of a Governor who thinks he can balance the budget by increasing spending gets such high approval ratings...but he does.  From what I understand, Crist is enjoying a similar approval rating in Florida while standing for many of the same things Schwarzenegger does.  While it sickens me, I can see McCain selecting Crist as his running mate for just that reason.  Besides, McCain owes the guy for delivering the Florida Primary to him.

fitz...that is exactly why

fitz...that is exactly why I think he will most likely pick Crist too..he owes him...plus he agrees with him on the enviro and Global warming..blah blah blah...I hoped Ahhhnold would be good for my home state that you reside in and I still pay property taxes on ... I hoped he would be good for Calif...I was wrong, along with a lot of my family that reside there and are very angry with him now too...including some issues with illegal aliens....oh well...nothing new with politicians I guess...it is just sad to me to watch Ca. go to hell in a hand basket, it has changed so much over the decades, it saddens me to no end.

That's life.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Yeah, BT, he's been really

Yeah, BT, he's been really disappointing.  If I didn't have family in California, my wife and I would have left here a long time ago...we almost did and I'm sure we will some day.  It's sad because without Arnold, the Recall probably wouldn't have succeeded...and that clueless Gray Davis just had to go.  But ever since he laid down like the coward he is against union opposition before the special election in 2005, Arnold's been an utter sellout.  He gets favorable media treatment now because he's capitulated to the teacher's unions, the state legislature and goons like Antonio Villaraigiosa for the sake of personal popularity.  He's laying a financial time bomb for the State...and he'll be out of the line of fire by the time it explodes.  By then, he'll probably be filling Barbara Boxer's Senate seat...if (perversely) we're lucky.

fitzfong, Hello....Crist

fitzfong,

Hello....Crist would not be a good idea. As a Floridian who voted for him (I wish I could take that vote back), we got duped big time! He has not done one thing he said he would, example: help with the high homeowners insurance and high property taxes. Instead we are getting a "promise" to help stop global warming. What? He is a total RINO, I don't trust him!

msh1973, I don't trust

msh1973,

I don't trust him, either.  My sister-in-law lives in Florida and has said the same things.  I don't believe he would be a good Vice President...why would I believe such a thing when I've got my own Charlie Crist out here in California?  But I believe McCain will see him as a running mate of expedience...he'll be thinking that he can get some leverage in a massive swing state by choosing that state's inexplicably popular Governor to campaign with him.  And it gives Florida the opportunity to replace Crist with a real Republican (if that's possible).

fitzfong, Rush had a

fitzfong,

Rush had a caller today asking the same questions...Rush didn't think that McCain would need Crist to win Florida. Interesting thought....

Mort in left field

I think you could make an argument for General Powell, but not a good one, and there is no explanation for Whitman. Mort is thinking of a strategy for the middle where McCain needs to maintain the base.

The only thing that matters

The only thing that matters is what McCain wants.  If McCain is like most every other president in history, he'll want a VP that won't outshine him.  Most everyone discussed so far would attract too much attention away from the beneficent McCain during his presidency.

McCain will gravitate towards a wallflower, a human snooze machine - think Al Gore, Gerald Ford, Harry Truman.  Since McCain himself is no barnburner, except for his infamous temper tantrums, he'll need someone that makes watching paint dry an Olympic sport.

As an Ohioan, perfect wallflowers for McCain's VP would be Voinovich or Taft.  These two could be on fire and no one would notice.

I don't have a clue who

I don't have a clue who McCain will choose for VP.  He is playing his cards very close to the vest and he may not reveal his choice until after the Dems select their presidential candidate.  In a way, not revealing his VP choice gives less ammo and cover for the Dems at this point,  The last thing he should want is the current narrative of Hillary as liar and Obama as an Anti-American, Anti-Semite follower being replaced by Anti-McCain talk.

I hope McCain selects one of the several excellent people our fellow posters on NB's have suggested.  Maybe McCain will finally surprise pleasantly for a change.

"Kick me"

Women might like Whitman, African-Americans might, and independents might.  But will a Republican president ever be elected without most of the Republican votes?  Not likely.  Either that, or we pin a "kick me" sign on the Republican elephant.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Talk about wishful thinking

Talk about wishful thinking on Mort's part. Republicans are not getting the black vote, I don't care who the VP is. Recommending that McCain choose a VP to attract blacks is just about the dumbest thing I have heard so far this campaign season.
