Todd Bursts Matthews' Balloon on Casey's 'Spiritual' Endorsement of Obama

He calls it Hardball, but again tonight Chris Matthews showed he's a softy when it comes to Barack Obama. Chris was crestfallen when NBC News political director Chuck Todd laid out the case, chapter and verse, that political payback, even revenge, explained Sen. Bob Casey's endorsement of Obama as much or more than the "spiritual" reasons Chris so wanted to believe in.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Chuck, I didn’t expect this guy. He’s a very cautious U.S. senator in his first year, his first term, and what did he do? Almost a spiritual announcement he made today: I’ve got to be for Barack.

Todd tossed Matthews a bone, but the pragmatic political director quickly reverted to form, drawing upon his encyclopedic knowledge of modern political history to demonstrate that not-so-exalted emotions lay behind the endorsement.

CHUCK TODD: He did and in fact Obama emphasized that he actually didn’t work Casey over. If you knew the intricacies of Pennsylvania politics, you knew that Obama would have a shot at it. Wherever Rendell [a Clinton supporter] is, you would assume the Caseys are on the other side.

MATTHEWS: Why? Explain that?

TODD: Well, they had their, they ran against each other for governor in 2002, a very nasty primary fight, one that I think the Caseys as a family haven’t gotten over. Ed Rendell ran against Casey’s father in a race for governor 20 years earlier in a campaign that Casey, Sr. won, so it was a little bit of Rendell payback. But then we forget also the late Bob Casey, the Clintons kept him off of the ’92 convention [because of Casey’s pro-life position], then he protested and didn’t go to the ’96 convention. So there’s certainly enough reason for Casey not to be for Clinton. [Obama] needed something. He hadn’t gotten one major endorsement.

The deflated Chris complained.

MATTHEWS: You are so political. Well anyway, Gene [Robinson of WaPo], the more spiritual aspect of this – and you [Todd] go into the political analysis.

Chuck reminded Matthews of what the show is ostensibly about.

TODD: Aw, geez. Where are we? Are we on Hardball? Or are we on –

MATTHEWS: Like we heard this before like Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri said my kids talked me into it. You know, we heard this from Caroline Kennedy her kids talked her into it [shades of Chris’ old boss Jimmy Carter whose daughter Amy told him nuclear weapons were the most important issue]. Could this be another generational, somewhat of a spiritual arising here, encouraging a guy to do something that's not necessarily in the area of political revenge, as you describe it?

Even the genial Gene Robinson couldn’t help teasing Matthews for going soft.

EUGENE ROBINSON: It could be. And we've seen the phenomenon of young people who have a different experience of race and less baggage about race and who are really energized by Obama's message. But what I want to talk about is Chris Matthews getting spiritual about Pennsylvania politics!

At the end of the video clip I’ve included for your delectation a bit more of Casey’s endorsement remarks. Have a listen and see if it doesn’t sound like one of Rush Limbaugh’s parody Obama commercials. Gauzy fluff about "change," “hope,” “new politics” and “healing” that is certified, guaranteed, 100% substance-free.

It seems only fitting that

It seems only fitting that one empty suit senator would endorse another one.

Hardball or Something just went up my leg again?

Shouldn't Matthews just come out with an open endorsement of Hussein?

Or for that matter the whole broken MSNBC machine?

God, this pissant actually tries to pass himself off as a journalist?

Well three questions but we all know the answers

"Don't let the bastards grind you down"

Red

OMG @ Chrissy

Has he given up on reporting the news altogether and is now just devoting all his resources to helping Obama? Spiritual reasons for endorsing someone? A Senator?

Pravda would blush at Chrissy's propaganda.

Gauzy fluff about "change,"

Gauzy fluff about "change," “hope,” “new politics” and “healing” that is certified, guaranteed, 100% substance-free.

Oh, you mean kind of like the campaign Bob Casey used to get elected to the Senate in 2006?  This clown got elected without ever having to explain a specific policy position.  He's the poster boy for the Empty Suit Society.  That steaming pile of human waste Chuckie Schumer and his goons used their influence to target Rick Santorum, Fast Eddie and the Goonions did their part and the anti-war creeps did the rest.  By the end of that embarrassing race, a corrugated cardboard cutout of Bob Casey could have cruised to the Senate.  I'd say that I'm embarrassed for Pennsylvania, but I live in California and have suffered through the humiliation of Barbara Boxer being one of our two Senators since 1993.

But that does bring up an interesting question...who will Boxer endorse?  After all her former son-in-law is the Pantsuit's brother...and he's a deadbeat dad to her grandchildren.

Fitz: Got ya beat.  My

Fitz:

Got ya beat.  My congresscritter is Stephanie Tubbs Jones.

There is no joy in being first at being last!

RRAM Tough!

Yeah, that's pretty

Yeah, that's pretty disgusting.  I used to live in Henry Waxman's district.  I need a shower just thinking about it.

We may have hit the

We may have hit the trifecta:  Boxer-Tubbs Jones-Waxman.  I'm afraid of what we may have won.

Still, not exactly the unholy trinity, since the three Greek sea hags Helen Thomas, Hillary Clinton and Joy Behar were not involved, so at least there's no worry of spontaneous combustion.

RRAM Tough!

There are too many

There are too many qualified candidates to make the choice for the unholy trinity easy.  Suffice it to say, Schmuckie Schumer is definitely one of the three.

i live in pennsylvania and

i live in pennsylvania and its a lost cause..its an entitlement utopia..we have a dense (apply both definitions) population of greedy blue hairs who are crushing their gen x and y grandchildren with free bus rides, rent rebates, 2 dollar medication, free scooters, etc. the list keeps growing with rendell , casey and specter all to happy to provide...

anyway rendell is a very smart politician and knows obama has no shot and figures the clintons can help him with his 2012 run for the white house of which he will trounce a one term mcain easily..

I hadn't even considered

I hadn't even considered that that sleazebag Fast Eddie Rendell would have Presidential ambitions.  But then again, why wouldn't he?  I remember Gray Davis thinking he'd make a great future President when he waltzed to reelection in 2002.  That didn't turn out so hot for him.  I suppose if McCain wins in November, Fast Eddie (or Slick Eddie, not sure which is more appropriate) will emerge as a potential opposition front runner.  But he comes off like such an unadulterated sleazy Northeastern thug that I can't see him having such great appeal nationwide.  Nevertheless, that's a pretty astute, if frightening, prediction you're making.

Penn climate?

I am curious about the economic's of PA. In a national report I read that jobs have gone up and unemployment is down in many sectors. That did not include some industrial jobs but said that retraining had brought new productivity and changed the labor landscape? I can not find the article anyone have it?
Also, Rendells wife ,Midge, was given her judgeship as a clinton appointee.
I heard Specter on C Rose say that hclinton in the Senate is called a 'quadulator' - you never know which way she is going or what her point is. This was a strange statement but Rose did not follow up.
I have friends in Philly and they say there is a underground movement toward Obama because of the exposure of the continous clinton lies and racial slurs...What is the general opinion?

Chris Matthews - Chapter and Verse

Jude 1:16

These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts [their own bizarre political longings]; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words [they have a long history of misusing and overusing strange metaphors], having men's persons in admiration because of advantage [they admire certain men because it suits their political aganda].

Matthews is a murmurer and complainer who walks after his odd political desires (all the while he's getting this feeling up his leg). He's all too prone to let loose with his off-the-wall metaphors. And he damn sure has Obama in admiration because of the political advantage he thinks he gains from him.

He needs to learn to respect God and His Word more than men.

Acts 5:29

Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, "We ought to obey God rather than men."

Proverbs 1:7

The fear [respect] of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Psalms 119:9

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy Word.

Hebrews 4:12

For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit [it seperates what comes from the old man nature and what comes from the new man nature - the inner man - the gift of holy spirit in a born-again man or woman], and of the joints and marrow [which are impossible to seperate except at the molecular level], and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Rumpswab

Matthews probably had "The Thrill" going up both legs as he apparently has dropped even the illusion that he is "reporting" news. I know he is a "commentator".  But seriously,  when will the Obama Campaign announce that he will be Barry's Press Secretary, Man Servant or some other position more appropiate.

Now...

We can find out what Chris Matthew's Leg is REALLY thinking! It has it's own blog!

The fact is, it Chris Matthews’ left leg that “hearts”
Obama. His right leg has a libertarian streak and often feels
“restless” when Ron Paul says the words “gold standard.”

This site is honored to have been designated the official oracle and
chronicle of the thoughts, actions and, most importantly “sensations”
of Chris Matthews’ Leg.

(This blog has no connection whatsoever to Chris Matthews the
person and the thoughts expressed herein are those of the leg only and
do not necessarily reflect those of Chris Matthews’ head.)

This is sickening, Chrissy

This is sickening, Chrissy swooning all over Obama. Talk about media bias.

Matthews really has lost it

Matthews really has lost it completely anymore when it comes to Obama...he needs to take a vacation until after the election is over...out of this country and away from any mikes....or airwaves.

I didn't think he could become much more of a looney leftist la-la-land guy...but I saw this yesterday and he was just plain pathetic...and to think he calls his show Hard-Ball...not anymore, he even needs to be reminded of this fact by others.

He is embarrassing himself...in a big way.
