Greenfield: Obama Failed By Not Disassociating From 'Crackpot'

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Like so many of his colleagues, Jeff Greenfield comes to the MSM from a background in Dem politics, having served as a speechwriter for RFK. But more than most, the CBS senior political correspondent demonstrates an ability to put partisanship aside in his analyses.

Witness Greenfields's comments on this morning's Early Show regarding Barack Obama's speech on race on this morning's Early Show. The show's intro referred to the speech as "a defining cultural moment in America" and a "moving moment." Greenfield was considerably more restrained in his praise, suggesting that Obama failed by declining to disassociate himself from a "crackpot."

Co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez spoke with Greenfield and pollster Frank Luntz.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

MAGGIE RODRIGUEZ: Do you think [the speech] accomplished his task, which was to defuse the Reverend Wright situation?

JEFF GREENFIELD: No. I think absent the controversy with Reverend Wright this would have gone down as a terrific speech, uncommonly blunt, kind of a Nixon-goes-to-China, maybe only an African-American can talk this bluntly about race. But what to me, the comments of Reverend Wright will leave in some people's minds a notion that Obama, who is still an unformed candidate, not nearly as well known as, say, Hillary Clinton or other candidates have been in the past, a question who is this guy, what does he really believe?
How do you sit in church for 20 years, become aware of some of these comments, and not say "I'm sorry, this isn't for me"? Disowning your grandmother's a little different from disowning your pastor. So while the talk about race was I thought exemplary, the lingering problems left by the Wright comments I think will remain, as a low-level fever at least.
Luntz was not quite as critical, but did fault Obama for going on too long, spending too much time on Wright rather than the broader themes, and looking into the teleprompters instead of right at the viewers. Then it was back to Greenfield for a knockout blow.
RODRIGUEZ: Do we give him credit for dismissing the words but not disowing the man, or do you think that that's not enough?

GREENFIELD: The question here for me, actually, and this may seem odd given the context, is really not race. Some of the things that Reverend Wright said--that AIDS was a government conspiracy against black people--these are the words of a crackpot, and the question is, if this is a spiritual mentor, this is a guy who is part of your life, at what point do you look up and say this guy is too much off the rails for me to be associated with him?

Man, Greenfield just nails

Man, Greenfield just nails it!

I find it interesting that Obama hasn't thrown in the towel. He's certainly smart enough to know that he is done. (Isn't he?)

Man, Greenfield just nails

Man, Greenfield just nails it!

Yes, he does.

I don't know that anything else needs to be, or can be, added to what he said.

The speech was just that.....a SPEECH

Reverend Wright is entitled to his own opinion and can say what he want. What I find disturbing is that a man who wants to preside over this country has sat for close to TWENTY YEARS under this preacher.

Obama has inhaled the racist rhetoric of this man of the cloth and he has absorbed the anti-American propoganda spewed from his mouth.

Obama is STRAIGHT UP lying when he says he has never heard the man who is like an 'uncle' to him say these things.

I do not trust Obama. Never have; never will.

His speech was filled with the usual stuff he spouts: HOT AIR.

You'll note Obama never said...

Never in the speech did BHO ever state "GOD BLESS AMERICA" and I wonder why?

Isn't BHO the same ONE that dishonored the flag

Was it not BHO that refused to participate in a Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag?

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.

You are correct and no lapel pin, etc!

Well of course not. If he were to show love for the USA, he would durely be drummed out of his church, his party, and his marriage.

Because he's secretly an Al

Because he's secretly an Al Quaeda operative?

Obama missed a huge

Obama missed a huge opportunity in the speech he had to give yesterday and Greenfield nailed it.  After seeing the msm coverage you would have thought that it was the greatest speech ever.  If anything it furthered the notion that noone knows who Obama really is and was disappointing to here the candidate for the dem nomination make excuses for Wright's anti-American hateful views rather than completely admonish those views and speak as the so called uniter he says he wants to be.  Obama was exposed yesterday and this had to hurt his chances.  The question now is who are the dems left with - Hillary or Obama will be weak in a general election especially against a moderate like McCain that will appeal to both parties.

I would be willing to bet

I would be willing to bet that the MSM will not let Obama back out of the race even if he wanted to, which he doesn't. He gave the MSM all the ammo they need for any fall out of this BS he talked of yesterday.

Built in.."it's just white conservatives who want to continue this race baiting...we want to move on to other issues".. crap. He's a fraud. McCain needs to exploit this at every chance. The question is, is McCain up for it? We'll see. Apparently Obama will be able to say the most outrageous BS and not get called on it. This is getting ridiculous.

Frank Luntz's remarks on

Frank Luntz's remarks on Hannity and Combes last night were more compelling.

I didn't see that last

I didn't see that last night. What did he say? (I checked the Fox site...nothing up there yet).

He was disappointed in many

He was disappointed in many sections of the speech. Especially where Obama threw his grandmother under the bus.

marpel, You got that

marpel,

You got that right: throw white granny at the bus. That tells me everything I need to know about the man's character ..

The bottom line is this:

The bottom line is this: Obama's actions of staying in that church for twenty years speak far louder than any pretty words he may speak today.

I want to be like Obama so...

as far as his speech goes....I vote "present"

docb, you are, as per usual, way off base here.

Surely you do remember when a person who had helped you through a difficult time and inspired you to be a better person.

So, Obama being mentored by a hate-filled, bitter, flaming racist/hatemonger and 1960's throwback has somehow made Obama a better person? How can a man who claims to be a minister of the gospel, yet twists and perverts that wonderful story into something completely un-Biblical, make anyone a better person?

Personally, I think Barack Obama would be far better off today had he never met this heretical preacher of hate.

This Appears not to be the case in many cultures around the World and
in the Black communities in the USA. One reason other nations find the
USA not to be admired.

You mean the cultures that still exist in the world whose members stand around urinating in their own drinking water? Just perhaps it is long past time these cultures cast aside their mentors and found for themselves a different path.

The United States of America has reached the highest standard of living in recorded history. We have done more to advance that standard to more areas of the world than any other nation in history. I challenge you to find another country that has been anywhere near as generous with sharing its resources as we have.

I suppose we have people from all over the world waiting for years, and in many cases risking their own lives, to immigrate to this country because it is, as you imply, the armpit of the planet.

Barack Obama has now been exposed for what and who he really is; A man who essentially represents the Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton race pimp/race hustler brigade, who owe their rather extravagent livings to keeping black Americans in their place (as in eternally dependent) on their white liberal masters for the last forty-plus years.

Oh sure, Obama sounded different at first, but at the end of the day, when the false veneer was finally peeled away, all he really turned out to be is a better educated and more suave version of Jesse and Al, albeit one with a much expanded vocabulary.

_____________________________

The cold hard truth about Barack Obama is that he is socialist to the core, as he has absolutely no understanding of a free market economy. He, just like the rest of his ilk, is only interested in putting all of us on the same level so that his twisted idea of "equality" might finally be realized.

Too bad, really, as our free market economy has done much for the black Americans who have managed to escape the liberal plantation.

Worse still, and not just a little puzzling, is that a wealthy black American such as Barack Obama, who benefitted greatly from a free market economy, and who managed to fool enough people to get within two steps of the presidency, is working so hard to deny other black Americans the very opportunities he himself took advantage of.

Sadder still that people like you are either too ignorant, too stupid, or so filled with hatred toward this country that you are unable to recognize this.

Meritless screed

R.D.- Hatred is oozing out of your long speel. Low verbal skills present themselves in name calling and attempts at character assasination. I will address only a couple of points--the remainder of you screed is meritless.

There was not one attack on this country in my post or in the oratory of Mr. Obama. What was presented in both cases was a perspective informed through life experiences and the compassion and courage to present them without rancor or prejudice.

Lambasting/negating other cultures, without the experience of being there, is the same as making judgements about a life in this USA you have not lived. A culture you have not taken the opportunity to learn about.

You present hatred and anger and fear in your post which is exactly what contributes to the continuing schism of racial strife in this country.

docb,

What you refer to as hatred, I refer too as truth. Funny how so many of the leftist persuasion in this country are incapable of differentiating between the two. Then again, to those on the left, anything put forth by anyone with which they do not agree is promptly labeled as hate speech. Beats the hell out of actually debating the point, does it not?

...name calling and attempts at character assasination.

Name calling? Wow, some impact that accusation packs coming from someone who came on this site yesterday and accused one of the most respected contributors here of being a bigot.

As for your alleged "character assassination," you have essentially accomplished that all by yourself. What is more, I will always reserve the right to question the character of anyone who will blindly defend, and apparently support, someone as clearly dishonest and fraudulent as Barack Obama.

There was not one attack on this country in my post or in the oratory of Mr. Obama.

So, I take it that, "One reason other nations find the USA not to be admired." was improperly interpreted on my end, as you apparently meant it as a ringing endorsement of the U.S.A. Right.

As to your contention that Barack Obama refrained from attacking this country, that is demonstrably false. The bulk of his speech was nothing but an attack on this country.

For one of many examples I could cite, Barack Obama stood before us yesterday and essentially accused all who voted for Ronald Reagan to have done so for what were either directly, or indirectly, racial reasons.

Given the high percentage of Americans who voted for Mr. Reagan in 1980 and 1984, his attack was aimed at a huge majority of Americans. This, in my mind, constituted an attack on the American people, and as such, this country. This man did not just play the race card, he hurled the entire deck our way.

Lambasting/negating other cultures, without the experience of being
there, is the same as making judgements about a life in this USA you
have not lived. A culture you have not taken the opportunity to learn
about.

First of all, I am not a cultural relativist. I consider Western, and particularly American, culture as the current superior model. That opinion was not formed out of ignorance, but from first hand knowledge and extensive study.

I have traveled all over Europe and North America, and I have family members who have worked as missionaries in Africa, South America and Europe.

I have, since my earliest middle school years, read volumes of World, European and American history, far more than probably 97% of the population of this country. I hardly consider myself to be uninformed. Not even close.

You present hatred and anger and fear in your post which is exactly
what contributes to the continuing schism of racial strife in this
country.

I expressed neither hatred, anger, nor fear. I did, however, express my disdain for a form of government that is the most murderous and oppressive the world has yet seen. Marxism, or its freedom-destroying derivatives, was directly or indirectly responsible for the deaths of well over 100 million people in the century just past.

As a devout libertarian, I believe steadfastly in the primacy of the individual over that of any government. Socialism and ultimate freedom are the oil and vinegar of the political spectrum. They do not mix, even in the minutest of amounts.

As for your contention that my attitude, and others like mine, are what is contributing to the "continuing schism of racial strife" in this country, I say nonsense. Unlike liberals such as yourself, I view people as individuals, not as members of groups.

The liberals have been dividing people into groups based on race, gender, sexuality, geography and what have you, for well over four decades now. They derive their power from affording more "rights" to some groups than to others. They then kick back and wait for the carnage to unfold, then, once the howls of discontent have acquired a sufficient volume, they step in and redistribute the "rights," then start the process all over again.

Thankfully, many of their selected groups are beginning to catch on to this little game, especially now that many black Americans are starting to rightfully sense that the liberals are about to throw them to the lions in favor of our invaders currently swarming over our southern border.

It appears the liberal democrat's 40 year-plus mass deception is about to turn around and bite them squarely in the ass.

This is going to be great fun to watch.

As for your reluctance to address the balance of my comments, I can only assume that my assertions were right on the mark.

R D, great post

What did his speech explain, other than "I'm a politician and want to be powerful and President, so I'm going to appease everyone in a short speech!"  Overlooked in the whole thing is he did not say GOD BLESS AMERICA!  Here's more on my take:  Yesterday's speech did more to set back race than anything in the last 14 years-only OJ did close to the same.  We now know that churches are spewing hatred of America, hatred of the white man, hatred of corp America, etc.  The candidate of UNITY has now shattered the fragile layer of race relations by never totally distancing himself from words of pure hatred.  His statement of not agreeing is too simple.  If you stay in a room full of fleas, you are not able to keep all the fleas off!  When you continue in an environment that does not change, it changes you, you do not change it.  Really what he said just reiterates some of what Repubs have said for years-programs to make things better do not work.  We the people believe it is people that make things work, not government!  He spouts about how the blacks and lower class whites have been put down by the rich-this is hatred speech.  Some blacks and whites have rose to monetary status because they did not believe they were to be kept by the government, but that they could, with the will of GOD and their own hard work, succeed!  He talked of lines in the emergency rooms of hospitals of people without insurance.  They don't have it because they won't pay for it!  Not because it isn't available!  He brings up Dr King, well, to borrow from someone else, BHO you are no MLK!  And what did the ASHLEY story have to do with anything.  14 years ago, let's see, Bill Clinton in WH.  Poor Ashley's mother had cancer[I'm sorry for her and her family], and he says she lost her job because she missed work and lost her health care.  Well if she had health care, it would continue under Cobra for a certain period of time.  Ashley ate relish and mustard sandwiches.  Did not any church know of Ashley and her mom's fate.  My church helps those in need.  It's supposed to be a story to inspire, but I read a sign recently that said, "Aspire to inspire before you expire!".  Good words to go by.  The Ashley story has too many missing components.  I've love to know more, know why no one helped in her neighborhood, church, etc.  To finish his story he says the elderly black man says only "I'm here because of Ashley", but never really explains it-was it because she went to his home and said come out, or was it because she related the story to him, or just what?  The speech was void of any real substance.  Lost in it all was his use of the church to talk politics-thought DIMs wanted no "church and state"!  He constantly threw in GIVEAWAY programs while saying welfare state has harmed us-total contradiction in own statements.  If Rev Wright's statements weren't so bad, why did the website of the church take off some of their mission statement, etc.-again total contradiction.  He stated all churches get into talk like this-never been to a church in my life that does and if they did I'd leave!  Says he could have just moved on and not addressed this-he knew that was politicial suicide-again total contradiction.  He says stagnant wages-where, didn't we increase minimum wage, because of unions, etc, people get raises every year.  He says jobs shipped overseas, well how about the reason why-UNIONS.  Didn't talk about overseas jobs that come here-take Toyota, & others for example-total contradiction.  He spewed hate talk himself about conservatives and Reagan Coalition, etc.-total contradiction to his supposed message.  Why say "a candidacy as imperfect as my own."  Looking for sympathy vote!  Then again went in bad welfare state then straight into govt giveaway programs-total contradiction.  Said Rev Wright had CONSERVATIVE ideas-wow, where did that come from-TOTAL CONTRADICTION!  When he said "We have a choice in this country", he went into listing OJ trail, Katarina, etc., all statements to inflame, racial statements-total contradiction to his message!  He spoke of shuttered businesses-but failed to note reason they're shuttered is because they did not keep up with technology, not becuase of anything bad-TOTAL CONTRADICTION.  He talked of HOMES taken away-they were taken away because the people tried to live over theimeans!-total contradiction.  His perfecting the USA statement lost the fact that we will not be perfected till we put the past behind us, learn from it and go on-the Old Testament is history, we learn from it-the NEW TESTAMENT gave us JESUS CHRIST and how to live.  He ended on some story that had no beginning and no end-no story.  And never a GOD BLESS AMERICA!    That's one man's opinion!

Thanks, PawpawN

Heck, I do manage to nail it every so often. :-)

RD...

Excellent, excellent post!! Although it appears obvious your words were lost on docb...Hang in there!!!

docb: So the likes of Bin

docb: So the likes of Bin Laden hate us because we can't find it in our hearts to forgive a relative who might kill an unmarried daughter for being seen with a man who is not a member of her family? There's such a thing as being civilized. I don't think we need to accept the mores of cultures which do not honor our own ideals in the name of being inclusive.

And keep your white American guilt to yourself. When one decides to run for office, one better be certain that what one has to say reflects how one lives their life. It's not merely a matter of a family disagreement.

I am Queen Mum and I approved this message.

Mum and RD

Every religion has a FRINGE group of zealots that screech and more- at anyone that looks, talks, believes, or lives their life differently than we do. These people do not know from civilized as they are filled with hate, fear and ignorance. In order for our culture to be honored we must do the same for them. That means to educate and to honor the tenents of our faith- for me that means to do unto others... I am a white, female Democrat raised in the south in the Southern Baptist church in a segregated city...I have seen this spew up close and when I go home nothing has changed much.. Oh and I have my JD/MD.

To the other salient points:

Ok, what about white evangelical hate?

Every week, white evangelicals sit in pews and listen in rapt attention about anti-Catholic, anti-homosexual hatred spewing forth from the mouths of white ministers. Bush and Cheney and McCain can huddle with their spirtual advisors, the worst excess of white evangelism, who have spewed hateful things like "gays caused 9-11." Nary a peep heard from conservatives. No conservative has "stood up" heroically, alone against the vast sea of bigotry in WHITE churches. To them, such bigotry is justified. However, you can't justify bigotry in BLACK churches!! Hate is hate is hate, after all, and we must all condemn hate, especially among the blacks.

Because Obama attended a black church where hateful speeches are said, he is now guilty by association in a way no white politician has ever been. Don't give me false hypothetical comparisons to the KKK or whatnot. Let's think who white evangelicals hate. Maybe abortion doctors? Muslims? Catholics? Gays and lesbians? C'mon, if HATE is HATE is HATE, then we should condemn that HATE as well, right? If anyone listens to someone who preaches that hate, then that too, calls into their judgemnet. George W Bush met the Pope, a religious leader who believes all non-Catholics go to hell for eternal damnation. Does George Bush believe the same things as the Pope? Who can say?

No on will EVER find a quote of Obama using hate speech or pandering to anti-Jewish or anti-White or anti-American sentiment. But Obama's done, he's toast, stick a fork in him because he listened to hate. McCain? Well, he obiviously doesn't believe in what Hagee says, or Falwell. No guilt by association there. No media feeding frenzy. No gleeful conservatives finally free, momentarily, to crow about "reverse racism."

PLEASE, spare me the self righteousness. PLEASE stop trying equate "black racism" to "white racism." They are not equal, I'm sorry, the world is unfair to conservatives, boo hoo. History is on the side of African Americans. But first, try condemning your own side first before you sneer at Obama.

Y'know, Charles Murray and Mike Huckabee agreed with Obama. They must HATE as well.

You hated Obama before. You just did not know why. Now, THERE'S an excuse for your hate.

»→ Thanks docb

But Obama's not engaging in "reverse racism".  It's just racism.

He made donations to the cause of Rev. Wright.  Call it support if you like, but it an act of agreement with Rev. Wright.

Obama took his young girls to the same church.  Very clearly a show of support for Rev. Wright's message.

But it's not me you need to convince, it's the voters who now flee Obama in droves, rejecting his ludicrously contrived "post racial" candidacy.

If you give him a pass for failing to stand up like a man for his beliefs when doing so might make a difference, you'll give him a pass on any number of issues.

Can't take that chance with the next President.  Our current President spent like a drunken sailor, and most of us trusted he wouldn't.

And while you're at it, how dare you equate homosexual behavior with being Black.  Shows your deep understanding, I guess.

♣ a seal

Idiot!!!

Ooops, I mean DOCB. How dare you chance to tell me how I believe? I am an Evangelical, and I have never heard anything ant-Catholic in any of the churches I have attended. This seems to be a typical liberal tactic. Make a bunch of assumptions, state them as if they are incontrivertible facts, and point the finger of superiority at any who don't agree.

As far as fags, Err, gays go, I don't hate gays. I don't believe their behavior is equalivant to heterosexuality. I have seen no proof that they are born that way, or, that if they are, then homosexuality can't be treated. Cool made a good comment above, how dare you equate being gay with being Black? Their struggles deserve no comparison whatsever. Gays were never enslaved, or denied basic rights. They can do everything the rest of us can, albeit possibly not with the partner of their CHOICE.

As far as the racism charge goes, what is it with you democratics? Why do you see a difference between "black racism" and "white racism"? Is not everybody equal in your world? All people are afforded equal oppurnity. That is why conservatives are so against a government run nanny state. Liberals are the ones who see everything through the prism of race. You see a black person, and see someone who is not as capable as you, so they must need a handout from somewhere. You make yourself feel all warm and fuzzy by supporting a party of thieves, secure in the knowlege that you are helping those inferior to you. I see a black person, and I see a person whose family tree may have much strife in it's past. I also see a person who has been afforded the oppurnities this great nation offers. He needs not my help, just the oppurnity to soar, absent the colossal wieght that is big government.

So take your air of superiority, and your fake compassion, and shove it.

Pathetic, juvenile and

Pathetic, juvenile and race-baiting garbage. Did you cut and paste this juvenilia, or did the voice in your head dictate it?

And seeing you know so much about...

Bush and Cheney and McCain can huddle with their spirtual advisors, the worst excess of white evangelism,

Do tell, what is the name of this person who rants this in the Presidents ear? C'mon know-all, who is it? Name names.

And why do you hate Obama so much?

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

docb...

I also am white and am also from and grew up in the south...And I have news for you...I don't know where you get your information about what Catholics and the Pope believe, but it seems clear to me that some of the erroneous nonsense that some Southern Baptists are taught about Catholics obviously took hold in you. The Pope does not believe that all non-Catholics are going "..to hell for eternal damnation." What anti-Catholic biased garbage is that? You have gone on and on and on about what you perceive as others' hatred and bias, when you can't see that you are guilty of a form of it yourself. As far as the rest of your rantings, they are your opinions...liberal and leftist as they are.

....will remain a low level

....will remain a low level fever...

Greenfield has that right....I'd say a little higher than that...more like a simmering moderate temp.
