Cramer Verklempt Over Spitzer

Jim Cramer is known for wearing his heart on his sleeve. But the host of CNBC's "Mad Money" normally lets his emotions show over matters financial. In August, for example, he went ballistic at Ben Bernanke, pleading with the Fed chairman to lower interest rates in the face of widespread home foreclosures.

This morning, however, Cramer got verklempt not over the discount rate but at the falling fortunes of his friend Eliot Spitzer. Cramer went to Harvard Law with the embattled governor and his wife Silda, and over the years has defended Spitzer against the torrent of criticism directed at the so-called sheriff of Wall Street for his high-handed tactics.

Cramer appeared on this morning's Today to discuss with Meredith Vieira
yesterday's dramatic Fed move. But at the end of the interview, Vieira
raised the Spitzer situation, and that sent Cramer to the verge of
tears. The transcript below doesn't do justice to just how emotional
Cramer became, so readers might want to view the video.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓

MEREDITH VIEIRA: You've had a couple of very rough days on a personal level; I know that you're good friends with Governor Spitzer and his wife Silda, you all went to Harvard Law School together. When news of this scandal first broke, what went through your mind?

CRAMER [fighting back a sob]: Well, first, it's not tough for me. But I was on air, and, um, I was denying it, cuz it was inconceivable to me. This is, he's a friend of mine. And it's inconceivable! But it happened. He's a great guy. And, you know, I love him and I really love his wife, and it's just very sad. It's just very sad.

VIEIRA: Meanwhile, you have so many people on Wall Street who are celebrating what happened.

CRAMER: I know. Because they hate him.

VIEIRA: He made a lot of enemies when he was Attorney General. They were cheering on the stock exchange when the news broke. How do you deal with their reaction? These are your colleagues. He is your friend.

CRAMER: I've had great ammo to shut 'em up. I don't have any ammo. I don't have anything I can say. Um, yeah, I've defended him for years because he's my friend for a long time and he'll still always be my friend, and so will Silda. But I didn't have anything to tell them to shut up. They have the edge, cuz Eliot screwed up, and I've always defended him because I think what he was doing was right. But now I just have to listen like everybody else to all the bad things that they say about him. And he is a hated figure, but I don't want to come on and say he's a good man, cuz no one like him now. But he's done a lot of good things, and it's just a sad thing. It's just very sad.

VIEIRA: You know, everybody's heart is going out to Silda, and the daughters. You know her very well. Today the New York Times is reporting aides to the governor claim she is the one saying to him "don't leave, don't step down, I want you to stay on as governor." Knowing her as well as you do, would that surprise you, for her to say something like that?

CRAMER: She loves, well, I think she loves Eliot. Uh, I know that he always worshipped her, so it's hard. I mean I don't want to make any excuses for what he did. I can't believe it! But she loved him; I don't know. It's awkward for me; this is different from the market. Um, you know, I just feel really bad for them, I feel bad for the girls and I really feel bad for Sil-- that's what I said to him, I said "let me speak to Silda," because I feel bad for you, but it's silly that you feel bad for him.

VIEIRA: It's a personal tragedy on a lot of levels.

CRAMER: It's for them. It's not, look, I've just known him for a long time. I obviously didn't know him as well as I thought.

I saw this when it aired...

I was so shocked I laughed and then I immediately felt bad for laughing.

At least Cramer didn't make excuses for Eliot Mess.

I can understand it.

These are his friends and classmates. To me, this Cramer rant is more relevant to media-bias and even corruption. This antibusiness merger delay is being strangely ignored, both here and on the left, IMO due to a lot of bought politicians. And Cramer's right, buying them wasn't even very expensive -- especially now that I know what a good call girl gets.
JMR

A corruption-story the TV media will-not cover.

Obviously, Harvard isn’t all it’s cracked up to be

Harvard doesn't seem to produce very good leaders and if you followed Cramer’s stock picks you would be at least 15% lower than the S&P, if not completely broke.

1984

Viera must have got the memo, "VIEIRA: It's a personal tragedy on a lot of levels.". I just love how all the left wing media people say the same damn thing.

When its a republican, its all about how it effects the party and what a disgrace that politician is. When its a democrat, they downplay part as much as they can and turn the offender in to a vicitim. Its disgusting and just more proof that the US media has become a propaganda machine.

Saw it live as well - - -

Cute act by the Wall Street Whacko. Hey Kramer, your friend Elliot is a gigantic, ego-driven a-hole. And he is going down (don't read anything into that last comment). Funny how Kramer really likes this guy and is such great friends with him when the ole' spitz was so hated by Wall Street.

Why isn’t the question: “Should Eliot Spitzer resign?”  I’m surprised CNN didn’t phrase their question as follows:  “Low-life NY Republicans are threatening impeachment against Gov. Eliot Spitzer who has been a wonderful man over the years.  Do you agree with these bastards?”

I like your version.  It

I like your version.  It would make a good NB Poll.  Put me down as a "yes".

3/12 10:00AM UPDATE From Albany, NY

The local radio stations here in Albany are saying that Spitzer may hand in his resignation letter within the hour.

Cramer is a manic

Cramer is a manic depressant.  He is either on a high of some kind or in the dumps.  If you watch his show, you know what I mean.  This interview is just another example.  I expect that is how he runs his life.

Regards to spitzer - good riddance - the sooner the better.  In part because of him and the ensuing Sarbanes/Oakley legistlation, there were more IPOs done outside the US last year for the first time.  Couple the above with the second highest corporate taxes in the world (only Japan's are highter) and its no wonder that NY is losing its title of the financial capitol of the world.

Regards to Cramer - unlike his counterparts on Fast Money, he just can't say stay on the sidelines or short the stock, the market, etc.  No matter what the market is doing, he is recommending some long position in a stock.  When the market was at a bottom, day before yesterday, he was finally saying "be cautious!"  If you listened to him and followed his advice since late October of last year, you are most likely broke by now.

Call me cynical, but...

Did anyone else see this as a possible attempt by the MSM to make people feel sorry for Spitzer? I mean seriously, can you remember anyone coming on the Today show and almost crying because they were such a good friend of say Larry Craig (who's only crime was being a moron) and they couldn't believe this could happen?  And if somone did do this, were they themselves a member of the MSM

Maybe I've gotten over cynical, but this just seems like a big setup by the MSM to try and connect this ordeal on a personal, emotional level, therefore making us feel sorry for him and actually getting people on his side.

Your right on tnculp!

You're right on tnculp! I remember when JFK jr. died and everyone cried out "What a tragedy". I simply do not view it that way; it was a completely avoidable event.Tragedy to me is unavoidable. Both events were STUPIDITY. JFK jr. knew he was not qualified to fly by gauges and he did so anyways. Spitzer knew prostitution is illegal but par took in it anyway. NOT A TRAGEDY.

I remember when JFK jr. died and the MSM ran down a list of Kennedy Family tragedies. It was a joke almost every instance it was situation in which they’re own arrogant stupid decisions caught up with them. Ski patrol tells people to stay off a mountain the conditions are to dangerous; a group of them go out skiing and one is skiing backwards trying to catch a football slams into a tree and dies. That is not a tragedy, Nor is this. Just a stupid decision by another arrogant ahole and now the MSM wants to gin up sympathy. What a joke.

the mountain lion kid

How bout the today show going  all over the  details of how prostitution works, while those 2 little kid were listening on standby, waiting to tell there story about being attacked by a rabid mountain lion. Those people have no consideration at all

"MEREDITH VIEIRA: It's a

"MEREDITH VIEIRA: It's a personal tragedy on a lot of levels."

Translation: For leftist fundamentalists, like Viera, it's disappointing that their darling leftist kook (i.e., Spitzer) will no longer be around to advance their leftist agenda.

Cramer is pitiful

I feel sorry for Cramer.

He looks like he's 'one more disappointment' away from an MSNBC bulletin showing a live shot of a news helicopter following his white Bronco down the FDR drive.

"I have Cramer in the Bronco, and he's o-k, but . . ."

Waaaa......

My friend who was given everything in life and has lived a life of luxury and was Governor of NY for God's sake, was just caught being a common criminial....waaaaaa, I just can't believe it and I'm gonna cry every time I'm interviewed...

Please, enough...be a man, tell him what a piece of trash he is.You want to shed some tears shed them for his wife and daughters....he's trash!
