Oprah Abandoned 'The Hot-Flash Cohort'

Look for NOW to be setting up picket lines outside Rush's Southern Command, protesting the way Limbaugh has demeaned mature women, writing them off as the "hot-flash cohort."

Outrageous! When will these right-wing men realize we will no longer tolerate their misogynist --

What? It wasn't Rush? It was that avatar of elite liberal thought Tina Brown, writing in Newsweek?

Never mind.

Here's how Brown put it in Hillary and the Invisible Women [emphasis added]:

All over the country there are vigorous, independent, self-liberated boomer women—women who possess all the management skills that come from raising families while holding down demanding jobs, women who have experience, enterprise and, among the empty nesters, a little financial independence, yet still find themselves steadfastly dissed and ignored. Advertisers don't want them. TV networks dump their older anchorwomen off the air. Hollywood studios refuse to write parts for them. Employers make it clear they'd prefer a "fresh (cheaper) face."

Even Oprah abandoned them when she opted for Obama. Am I alone in suspecting that TV's most powerful 54-year-old woman just might have endorsed him so fast for reasons of desirable viewer demographics as much as personal inspiration? Certainly, no TV diva in her 50s who values her ratings wants to be defined by the hot-flash cohort.

So not only did Oprah abandon her sisters, she did so for crass commercial reasons?

To use the phrase that's become popular in conservative circles as we observe liberal internecine warfare: pass the popcorn!

  When the Obama

When the Obama campaign collapses, so will Ms. Winfrey's support.  Maybe she can attract studio audiences with free cars and tear jerking discussion, but in the real world, Winfrey falls flat.

Limousine liberals are prone to that sort of thing.  She should spend more time having Tom Cruise dance a jig on her furniture and less time working the gloryhole of political discourse.

I disagree...Oprah's 18-30

I disagree...Oprah's 18-30 demographic won't desert her. They are star-struck, and Oprah can do no wrong.

You may be right about mass

You may be right about mass desertions by the weepy demographic that is Winfrey's audience, but her forthcoming "apologies" for being so "misled" by Obama's potential should have legitimate Americans tuning out in droves.

Mrrowwww!!! Hell hath no

Mrrowwww!!! Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Even it's by another woman!  But Brown shouldn't be surprised.  It's not about women, it's about Oprah.  Period.

Oprah doesn't want to be identified with the older women..she wants to be identified with the young and the hip.

They are the ones who are so star-sturck they run out to buy and read any book she recommends (Come on, Pillars of the Earth was written 20 years ago!! She's just getting around to recommending it NOW?) They are the ones hanging on her every word. Boomer women have been around long enough to recognize a snake-oil saleswoman when they see one.

She knows where her market is. And she knows how to play an audience.

And teh Oprah Audience IS . .

People who stay at home in front of the TV at 4 pm everyday.. . uh..and like watching Oprah.

It's certainly not the "get ahead" crowd watching Donald say "you're Fired !".

Or, maybe some already were (fired) ?

  The liberal dems use of

The liberal dems use of identity politics is finally coming home to roost.  Now the blacks, hispanic, women, gays, etc. will be demanding 'their' candidate.  Intra party warfare will be a sight to see.  Democrat women have learned that with nearly all blacks voting as democrats and also voting as a block within the party that this years experience will be repeated if conditions aren't changed.  Hillary is politically the strongest woman to represent women in the democrat party and she is being beat by a slick newcomer.  The democrat party may end up with everything dependent on shifting alliances among various factions within the party.  By promoting Bush Derangement Syndrome the dems are able to keep some sort of unity among the competing factions but if they win the Whitehouse and Congress all heck could break out as each group turns on the other.

Now the blacks, hispanic,

Now the blacks, hispanic, women, gays, etc. will be demanding 'their' candidate.

Maybe they can find a half black, half Hispanic, transgendered lesbian to run next time.

Maybe they can find a half

Maybe they can find a half black, half Hispanic, transgendered lesbian to run next time.

...and residents of San Francisco are going "I know lots of people like that".

Except for that 'half black

Except for that 'half black and half hispanic' thingy I think they might already have

Say it ain't so, Oprah!

What a hoot!

From the heart of the Ohio Blizzard of 2008, Columbus, OH where 20 inches of snow fell:

Courage!

I guess Tina Brown has a

I guess Tina Brown has a "not so fresh" feeling for Oprah.

Limbaugh

Well, Rush himself said that he liked following the womens movement.

Yes, wesen

 . . from behind.
