Cool Hand Barack

If one image can illustrate why Barack Obama is on the verge of winning the Dem presidential nomination, this one from last night's debate could be it.

View video here.

Not only does it represent the epitome of good-natured cool, it comes in stark contrast to the patented glare that Hillary aims at those who draw her ire. We've often illustrated the death-ray genre here at NB; you'll find a representative image after the jump from last night's debate.

Obama's gesture speaks largely for itself, but let's don our amateur body-language expert hat:

  • Hillary is saying something with which Obama strongly disagrees and to which he feels the need to respond. But Barack doesn't bother even glancing at her.
  • Far from glaring, he breaks out in a smile that is pleasant, not exaggerated for ironic effect.
  • Like a good student, he politely raises his hand and asks for his turn to speak.
  • But so self-assured is Obama, he doesn't even raise his head to make sure his gesture's being noticed -- Barack's confident people are paying attention.
  • And as for being ready from day one, Obama even manages to demonstrate his multi-tasking ability, jotting notes all the while.

A winner's gesture. Call him Cool Hand Barack.

Note: trying to fall asleep last night, I played the debate over in my mind and had chosen this moment to illustrate how and why Obama had won. I figured the media would overlook it, and had already drafted a headline along the lines "MSM Ignores Obama's Winning Gesture." But up it popped on Today. Score one for NBC.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Early

Ding! Ding! Ding!

Early clubhouse leader for line 'o the day!

If it's cool hand (Luke) raiser Barrack...then

Then Hillary must be the broad they brung in to the Prisoners, that got passed around because no one wanted to capitulate with her....except wild Bill.

I didn't watch the Debates......and I'm amazed that Mark F. can actually watch them, and come away with a designated winner....he obviously is starting to think like the MSM...I'm worried about him.

I appreciate the concern,

I appreciate the concern, Jay, but I wouldn't worry too much about me. My heart and mind remain in the same conservative place. But here at NB we're in the business of watching the MSM. Debates do have winners, and I don't think there's much doubt that Obama won this one.

Obama's Body Language

I think I have a similiar body language as Obama.   I know during business meetings I'm sometimes forced to endured, I feel like I'm going to go nuts because of the uselessnes of them. Anyway.. sometimes someone will say somethign is just totally absurd or untrue, and that face he made..almost like he was holding in a laugh, and then he leans back slow, and puts his hand up... I do the same thing.

When I do that, in my mind I know I just heard total BS... BS so obvious that I actually have pity on the person that said it.  So sure I am that I have just heard BS, I confidently just raise my hand , knowing that I dont have to get emotional or interreupt the person becuase I'm quiet content to let the person bury himself as he keeps talking.

Vince, I've always said NB

Full circle for Hill

Love that picture of Hillary glaring at Barack. She looks like her whole life is flashing before her, realizing it has come full circle:

Bill's wife

Defending Bill's bimbo eruptions as First lady of Arkansas

Defending Bill's bimbo eruptions as First lady of the United States

Running for president as a Senator from New York and trying to keep Bill from ruining her chances

Bill's wife

Mica, I've actually just

Mica, I've actually just changed the picture of Hillary's glare to one I grabbed from last night's debate. Hope you agree it illustrates the genre equally as well, and it has the advantage of coming from the same event.

Much better

It's a better picture of Hillary. I get a better sense of her feeling hopeless than the previous pix. Thanks, Mark

Thanks, Mica; glad you like

Thanks, Mica; glad you like it. Illustrating hopelessness is what we're all about here ;-)

Obama on style Hillary on Substance

There is no doubt that Obama wins hands down on style every time. But in every debate I've seen Hillary has a better command of the facts and frequently talks about details. Obama is always very general and doesn't really say much of anything.

I don't think McCain stands a chance against either of these two. His style is as bad as Hillary's and his substance isn't much better than Obama. McCain definitely has less harmful programs then Obama but McCain is clueless about the conservative message and won't be able to articulate it.

Let's not defeat ourselves...

...before the real race even starts.  McCain clearly shows improvement in his ability to listen to other's views and to adjust his demeanor to the situtation at hand.

I for one am not disillusioned by Barak Obama's talents at public speaking and commanding a crowd.  There are people who have the inate skill set to sell anything to anybody.  Look at the some of the leading tyrannts in the world past and present.  All are captivating public speakers -- Hugo Chavez, Mahmoud Amedinajahd, Vladmir Lenin, Mao Tse-tung, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Josef Stalin to name a few.

What is so sad about American politics is that the debates are not debates.  On every issue, all we hear is how wrong America is, how bad the Republican party is, and how the candidate has a plan.  What plan?  A meaningful debate would first lay out facts with which we can agree (as a stipulation in a legal proceeding).  Once common ground is established, candidates can set forth their plan for solving a problem and why they believe their plan is best.  Let the jury (voters) decide!

Instead, we have a popularity contest built on platitudes of empty promises of a utopian society trying to be all things to all people.  No, we cannot all get along as those seeking to represent us continue to divide us along racial, social, and economic lines.  Government intervention (read "funding") cannot solve all problems and societies that elect those who promise utopia financed through income and wealth redistribution have always found misery, shortages, and hopelessness.

I find Hillary's lack of debate and public speaking skills amusing.  How many times over the past seven years have we heard those suffering from BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) equate the President's intelligence with his speaking style?  Too numerous to count perhaps?  Supporters fawn over Hillary because she's bright, yet she is a horrible public speaker.  More telling about Hillary is that her campaign imploded because she's probably a poor executive and cannot make decisions.  She is calculating, but not disciplined and principled.  Neither is Bill, but he could get away with it.

In all fairness, Obama is not an empty suit.  In fact, he is very bright, which makes him all the more dangerous.  Why is he so shallow on substance in his speeches?  American voters repeatedly and overwhelmingly reject socialism as a solution to our social and economic challenges. If anyone thinks that a majority of Americans believe government should become more involved, why the outcry over the Supreme Court decision in Kelo v. New London, Connecticut?  Americans want to be secure in their property and do not want government to tell them what they can own and how they should spend their money.

Obama is disciplined and principled.  What a surprise it will be for America when they wake up and find out his agenda for change is not what was advertised.  God willing, we will never see that day.

Think about Obama's message and his audience.  Then, consider this quote:

In China, although in the main socialist transformation has been completed with respect to the system of ownership, and although the large-scale and turbulent class struggles of the masses characteristic of the previous revolutionary periods have in the main come to an end, there are still remnants of the overthrown landlord and comprador classes, there is still a bourgeoisie, and the remoulding of the petty bourgeoisie has only just started. The class struggle is by no means over. The class struggle between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie, the class struggle between the different political forces, and the class struggle in the ideological held between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie will continue to be long and tortuous and at times will even become very acute. The proletariat seeks to transform the world according to its own world outlook, and so does the bourgeoisie. In this respect, the question of which will win out, socialism or capitalism, is still not really settled.

On the Correct Handling of Contradictions Among the People  (February 27, 1957), 1st pocket ed., pp. 51-52.

--  Mao Tse-tung

Why is he so shallow on

Why is he so shallow on substance in his speeches?

Because a lot of Americans, (mostly liberals) don't want to hear policy, they don't want to be told "plans"....they want to vote based on emotion...who makes them "feel good."

Obama is exploiting the emotional immaturity of a lot of Americans, to the hilt.

Obama is also more elitist

and that is why he comes off cooler and it's sad that people see it that way. What he does is not pay attention to her because she is beneath him in his eyes just like the rest of us are.

As much as I can't stand Hillary's shrill, she's much less elitist and much less radical in her beliefs on abortion, crime & punishment, & national security.

I really go back and forth about who would be a worse President but with Hillary - the only thing that makes her worse is her personality. Obama is worse on everything else. Hillary represents the center of the Dem Party and Obama is the Far Left.

While some people see

While some people see Obama as "Cool Hand Luke" there, to me (maybe it's because of my age) he just comes off as arrogant.

He's like every hot-shot college kid that thinks he knows all the answers and is just waiting to dazzle everyone. His friends think he's amazingly cool, but a lot of people consider him an arrogant jerk.

VinceP1974 described it very well, but he described it from the vantage point of the "actor" in the situation. Observers see it differently.

Those enamored with Obama see it as a "zinger."

Those who aren't (myself included) see just plain arrogance.

I hear you, MB, but hope

I hear you, MB, but hope you'd agree that for most people tuning in, Cool Hand Barack came off the winner.

I agree with MB on this

I agree with MB on this point.  I thought BO's gestures/mannerisms were smug.  Then again, the alledged leader is able to posture this way and be viewed as strong by our MSM.

I thought Hillary had two negative moments in particular:

  1. Hillary rightfully complaining about being asked first oftentimes, unfortunately followed by the shallow attack on BO needing more pillows.  Fathead Russert seemed to attack Hillary more, with more frequent redirects to the same question, and a more confrontational tone to his voice.  Spanking Russert was fine but throwing in a slam at your opponent that had nothing to do with it was ill conceived and detracting.

  2. Hillary should have held her tongue when she had one of the few moments of being on top:  Fathead Russert (did you see the size of this guy's cranium compared to Brian Williams?) finally asked BO some difficult questions about taking care of business with Islamic terrorists and his ties to Louis Farrankhan and his (bigoted) minister and friend from Trinity Church., to which BO rambled on a great deal with the later question.  Hillary had to open her yapper and take the spotlight off BO instead of letting the final impression of hypocracy and avoidance remain with BO.

I think we perceive the actions of others in these situations through our own rose colored lenses of experience.  I do not refute Mark's position.  I only posit my perception.  As such, we can both be correct.

Exactly as I saw it too

Exactly as I saw it too strat...

By the way I have said for a bit now I think if anything does Obama in it will be his own arrogance, along with his wife and her mouth...it sure won't be McCain.

Agreed.I am glad I

Agreed.

I am glad I wasn't drinking anything when I first heard the MSM compare Michelle O with Jackie O.

Never an unkind word crossed Jackie's lips while campaigning for JFK nor her time in the White House.  Jackie had class, grace and tact, none of which come to mind given my knowledge of Michelle.  To quote/paraphrase Michelle Obama:

  • Barack smells in the morning,
  • First time I'm proud of America in my adult life,
  • Biracial... what's that about?,
  • that's a funny name... who names their kid Barack Obama?.

Sorry.  Nope.  No way.  Never.  Not going to happen.

stratman, the "pillows"

stratman, the "pillows" comment referred to a recent SNL debate spoof, in which the moderator was so enamored of Obama that he aske him if he was comfortable and would he like a pillow.

Anyone who wasn't familiar with the sketch wouldn't know that, so Mrs. Clinton was taking a chance with that.

Yep.  I watched SNL this

Yep.  I watched SNL this past Saturday and roared with laughter at that skit.  Sultan Obama (does that make Michelle a Sultini?), has had it pretty cushy on the campaign trail as of recent.  (No reference intended or insult meant to The Great Santini.)

What I thought would have been more effective is if Hillary had waited to spring the line about pillows until either BO avoided answering a question or when the talking heads (Fathead Russert and Williams) appeared to give BO a demonstrable break.  Both of those situations occured later on.  Hillary fired her payload too early and it backfired/fizzled.

Timing is everything in somethings.

RRAM Tough!

As I've written in previous

As I've written in previous posts, I voted for Hillary here in Texas even though I'm a Republican. This is only to try to help her beat Obama in the State primary. I was surprised to hear Sean Hannity speaking about this tactic on his radio show yesterday. Many GOPs are doing the same thing. Even though it felt creepy to ask for a Dem ballot, Hillary was the only vote I cast, and I left out of there as fast as I could.

This being said, all anyone in this nation has to do is take themselves back to that painful day on 9/11. Imagine Hillary's, Obama's and McCain's reaction as President to this. Who do you think would offer the appropriate short term and long term response? As much as I disagree with McCain and Hillary on issues, I think McCain and Hillary would appropriately "bitch slap" our enemies, while Barack would offer to wine and dine them so they could come to an "Epiphany". That's my barometer for deciding who should lead this nation.

That's all fine and well

That's all fine and well this snake oil salesman is a silver tongued devil.  But I have listened to his "plans" for our country and it ought to bother all of us.

Here is how he will prepare us to confront our enemy's: " I will cut investments in unproven missile systems"..."I will not weaponize space"...." I will slow development of future combat systems"..."I will institute a "Defense Priorities Board" to insure the quadrennial defense review is not used to justify unnecessary spending"...."I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons"...and to seek that goal I will not develop nuclear weapons"...."I will seek a global ban on the development of fissile material"..."and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBM's off hair-trigger alert"...."and to achieve deeper cuts in our nuclear arsenal"...There you have it, Barry's world view, which I guess on the face of it puts us last.

Yep, he sure is a silver tongued devil alright.

did he really say all of

did he really say all of that?

I would like to read that, and sutff it in the face of my friends who are voting for him

"...will seek a global ban on the development of fissile material"

Every time I hear Obama

Every time I hear Obama talking about how change "happens from the bottom up" and that populist tripe about "the people".......I wish someone would stand up and ask "Then what the hell do we need you for?"

All you McCain supporters

All you McCain supporters may get your way...

This morning I had the dis-pleasure of having coffee with some Democrat heavyweight locals. Let me re-prase that a little. These are local people that are only influential here in the mountains of western NC.

Anyway, they were talking about discussions they have had with other southern Democrats that are their peers but in other states. To sum it up, they said "that the dems won't be able to take the south in the presidential race". The reasons given are very eye opening. They said they would have to end up voting for McCain because "there's no way in hell they would vote for either the 'B'-word, or the "N"-word so they will vote for the white guy because he's a lot like a DEMOCRAT".

Ct... Well that sums it

Ct...

Well that sums it up succinctly now doesn't it.

bt... Succinctly sums it

bt...

Succinctly sums it up nicely, but it's not exactly the word I would have used.
