Chris Matthews on this afternoon's Hardball, speaking with Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.).
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Congressman Burton, why do you think Cubans on the island still support the Castro brothers? What is it that allows that lock on those people to continue?
DAN BURTON: I don't think they do support Castro, I don't think they supported Fidel or Raul. That is a Communist regime where they have block captains who watch everybody in each invidual block, and anybody that even speaks out against the government ends up in a gulag. Thousands and thousands of Cubans who want freedom and democracy have been in those Communist gulags for a long, long time, and many of them have been shot. Fidel Castro and Raul have even killed friends of theirs who they thought might want some positive change down there.
Would Chris Matthews have asked a Russian during the 1930s why people continue to support Stalin? Does Chris Matthews really need to have the facts of life in a brutal Communist dictatorship explained to him? Apparently yes.

But here, we do have a choice. It's called Smith & Weston.

February 19, 2008 - 21:56 ET by Lame CherryWhen all the Andy Garcia's are forced out of a nation who would pick up a gun and fight a thug like Castro, all that is left is the sheep with Castro slaughtering a few in public to keep the others bleating passively.
If Europeans had not made them to be sheered, they would not have made them sheep.
Matthews needs to read Spanish memoirs of real Spaniards who lived in the New World. It might help him in explaining why the Castro wolves rule the Cuban sheep pen like all communists do........like all liberals like Clinton do.
It is why Putin rules in sheep pen Russia and why Democrats rule in sheep pen New York.

February 19, 2008 - 22:19 ET by landsharkMatthews was probably baffled by the response. After all, Cubans must support Castro; how else could he get re-elected by such wide margins for so many years?
Gee, Chris, I don't know.
February 19, 2008 - 22:22 ET by R D HelmWhy don't you fly down there and ask them yourself?
What is wrong with these myopic liberals? How can any rational human being look at what has gone on in Cuba since Fidel took power, or any other communist hell-hole that has ever existed in the world, and see anything positive, other than when the governments finally callapse under the weight of their own corruption?
Is this what libs like Matthews want for all of us?

February 19, 2008 - 22:27 ET by pbthinkerIt has been my opinion, for many years, that the only reason Castro is still in power is because of our embargo on Cuba. He's been able to point to that, as the reason for all of Cuba's problems, over the years, and it's worked.
Had we stopped the embargo, years ago, his people would have realized what a joke the communist system is and would have overthrown his government.
